Not only this cat of Finiki, but everywhere around Karpathos the cats look so healthy!

Among the many interesting findings unearthed by archaeologists at the Basilica Church of St Fotini at Karpathos, there is a marble, Corinthian style column capital and a marble tomb confirming to estimates that the basilica stood on the site of what had in even older times been a shrine dedicated to the Dioscouri.

The remains of this work of art basilica, dating back to the 5th and 6th century, is one of the jewels of Vrondi bay, at the area known as “Afoti”, next to Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos. The byzantine churches of this period were huge with wooden roofs. Their main body was divided into three parts by two rows of columns and had many marble parts, many mosaics and bas-reliefs on the walls. These churches were abandoned in the 7th century due to the pirates’ raids, natural disasters and internal conflicts.

Before WWII, Finiki port enjoyed a very active trade movement, as many boats and fishing boats were departing from this port for Kasos, Crete and Piraeus.

The area of Lefko, meaning “White” in Greek, at north west Karpathos, is of great historical interest, as many findings prove that the area was inhabited from the prehistoric period.
