Welcome to Tablescape Thursday and thank you for stopping by. Depression glass is memories, but it is also beautiful and useful. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which color do you like better, the ultramarine/teal or pink?

Jeannette made Swirl in a luscious teal color they called ultramarine. It’s a deep sea green that looks great in this tablescape along with Tiffin cut crystal stemware Dolores.

Petal Swirl and Tiffin Dolores Cut Crystal Stemware

Jeannette made the same pattern in transparent pink. Here it is with a simple Libbey goblet and Homespun depression glass bowl.

Petal Swirl & Homespun Pink Depression Glass Place Setting

The pink is harder to photograph so here’s a different view. This time we added contemporary Italian crystal candle holders.

Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass and Rock Aurea Candles

It’s vote time, please. Which do you like better? The Teal? Or the Pink? Leave a comment and let me know.

Now that it’s fall, are you looking forward to making hearty warm soups for supper again? What better way to enjoy your meal and add a surprise than with pink depression glass?

Sharon Cabbage Rose Pink Depression Glass Rimmed Soup Bowl

This soup bowl is one of the harder to find pieces. It’s Sharon from Federal Glass, also called Cabbage Rose for the sprays of open faced happy roses blooming in the center and sides.

Federal made several of the most popular depression patterns, Madrid, Patrician, Georgian, Sharon, but did not use pink nearly as much as did Hocking or MacBeth Evans. In fact the only Federal patterns you often find in pink are Sharon and Diana. Federal made Normandie, Rosemary, Madrid, Patrician and Columbia in pink too, but these are less common.

One fun thing about Sharon is that it came in a lot of pieces so you can have fun collecting it. This same variety works in the opposite way too: If you decide you want only a small set you can choose among several options for plates, bowls and tumblers. Sharon is also quite robust. It’s thicker glass than some patterns and the shapes are smooth; there are no sharp edges that get nicked. You do need to watch rims of course, both the inner edge and the outer edge, but Sharon doesn’t get a lot of inner rim roughness.

We specialize in Sharon and maintain a good selection for you in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass. Shopping with us is like antiquing with your best friend.

Fall is coming and that means red and gold leaves, fires in the fire place and family get togethers, One way to create memories and add sparkle to your fall family tables is with vintage relish trays and what better one than this topaz gold colored Baroque tray from Fostoria Glass?

Fostoria Glass Baroque Topaz Gold Tint Relish Tray

Relish trays have gotten so scarce today and it’s a shame since they are handy little dishes that say “this meal is special”. Back in the day every newly wed couple got at least one relish tray for gifts and each family would use that tray for years. You could tell when it was Sunday or Thanksgiving or Aunt Cecilia was coming because that relish tray came out and the veggies got cut up and passed around.

Relish trays make great gifts today and vintage ones are extra nice. You’ll like one with this rich golden topaz color for fall and Christmas where the color will fit right into your fall decor. Of course it is in excellent condition with no rough spots to catch your hand and virtually no wear; in fact it looks sparkling new. Fostoria made this between 1937 and 1943 so you can tell the original owners took good care with it. The pattern is Baroque.

Our store’s goal is to make shopping with us like antiquing with your best friend. Come see what we mean and take a look at all our vintage glass relish trays. Pick your favorite and have it now in time for that first crisp day of fall!

Welcome to this week’s Tablescape Thursday with a retro table in pink and clear. Isn’t it pretty how the pink depression glass picks up the pink in the vintage bird figurine planter and contrasts with the depression goblets. Here’s the centerpiece – my favorite little bird and the Petalware pink creamer and sugar.

Petalware Pink Depression Glass & Retro Bird Tablescape

Did you notice the lunch plate in the lower left? It looks a little lighter color, doesn’t it. That’s partly because it is a little paler and it’s thinner glass so it looks lighter color. Take a look at the plate close up.

Petalware Pink Depression Glass Lunch Plate

The goblet is depression era but I’m not sure exactly what it is. The cutting is like Lancaster’s Jubilee (and a zillion others) on a classy looking stem.

Floral Cut Depression Glass Crystal Goblet

With the 1930s dinnerware and crystal the little vintage bird planter is a nice accent. (If you read this often you may suspect I’m not a good flower arranger. You are right.) My sister gave me this little bird for my birthday last year that we found at a flea market. We had a fun day and the bird is a happy reminder. I like how he’s peeking out around the goblet.

Depression Goblet and Janet's Bird

Let’s skip back a bit and see the whole table.

Petalware Pink Depression Glass & Cut Goblets

And a close up as we sit down for lunch.

Petalware Pink Depression Glass and Vintage Goblets

Are you confused by Bouquet, Oxford, Chinex, Cremax, Classic, all those patterns with all those decorations? MacBeth Evans made a series of depression glass patterns in cremax translucent glass that are confusing. Let’s go through a few of them.

First one up is Chinex Classic. All Chinex Classic pieces have a pie crust edge and raised scrolls on the rim.

Is it white translucent glass?

Does it have a pie crust edge?

Is there a molded scroll on the rim?

If you answered “Yes” to all three questions then congratulations. You have Chinex Classic.

Next one is Oxford.

Is it white translucent glass?

Does it have a pie crust edge?

Are there thin ribs that radiate outward on the rim?

If you answered “Yes” then you have Oxford.

Chinex Oxford Bouquet Cake Plate Depression Glass

Chinex Oxford Bouquet Saucer Detail

Great. Wonderful. So what’s the difference between Chinex Classic and Chinex Classic Bouquet? And between Oxford and Oxford Bouquet?

The “Bouquet” signifies the decoration in the center. Is there a multi colored decal of flowers? If yes, then it’s Bouquet. Remember, always determine the basic piece first, then look at the decorations.

Besides Bouquet you can find plain solid colored rims, rose decals, castle decals. These are patterns you can have fun with given the variety, durability and low cost.

One last one, plain old Cremax. Cremax has nice scalloped rims with groups of ribs. You can see this on the plate below and how it looks decorated in the green rimmed saucer.

Cremax Windsor Castle Brown Plate

Cremax Green Trim Saucer Detail

There are a few more variations, including one that has S-shaped grooves in the rim. All of these go well together and you can enjoy mixing and matching depression glass pieces and have a harmonious table when you are done.

Tired of depression glass? (I know, that’s heresy. But maybe just a teensy bit ready for something else?) How about some pink elegant glass goblets from Heisey?

Isn’t this an interesting shape with the flared plain stem and nipped in rounded square bowl. The bowl has a diamond optic which adds sparkle and gives this a polished look. The pattern is Gayose from Heisey Glass.

Gayoso is the name of the blank pattern. Heisey used this shape for a few etches and the reason I recognized this is because we had some crystal goblets with the Monticello etch a few years ago. The shape is distinctive once you have seen it.

Heisey was one of the elegant glass companies that went out of business in the 1950s. They were known for high quality glass and formal stemware.

This is a water goblet and we have a small set of them in our online store, Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass. Shopping with us is like antiquing with your best friend.

Here’s an all over crystal table to show how a place setting would have looked for lunch 60 years ago. Contemporary hostesses often combine crystal plates with china, allowing the crystal to add sparkle and style with the china giving a solid backdrop. This was less common when Tiffin Glass made this lovely cut glass pattern; hostesses would combine crystal stemware with china – that has been a perennial style – but combining plates is a newer trend.

As styles have gotten less rigid we’re experimenting more and having fun mixing and matching. This tablescape is all glass. The lunch plate holds a tall sherbet glass ready for a fruit cup; the small stem is for a little cocktail and the goblet is for wine.

This glass is Dolores cut crystal from Tiffin Glass, made about 20 years beginning 1948. It’s pretty like this, all in one pattern together, but the great thing about Dolores is that it’s a blendable pattern. You could put this goblet with a different wine stem or with almost any contemporary china and have a beautiful table. The glass has style and it’s a style that plays well with others. Look for Dolores in future tablescapes paired with other glass and dinnerware.

Shopping Information: If you like this stemware please shop our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass. Shopping with us is like antiquing with your best friend.

Both are Block Optic green depression glass from Hocking but see the difference in the handles? The one on the left is called a pointed handle cup and the one on the right is the plain handle. The differences are subtle and you may be happy with either.

For some reason Hocking went a little overboard with Block Optic cups, creamers and sugars. There are 6 cups shapes. Four of these are like the ones shown, round body with handles being fancy scroll, plain point, fancy point as shown and plain as shown. Another shape is squarish like a mug the last is more triangular.

I’ve seen all of the first four with round body shapes, and have never seen the other two. As long as you don’t particularly care which handle type you get there are a lot of Block Optic cups available. If you prefer only one type then either of the two shown are about the most common, at least here in mid-Michigan.

Hocking made multiple shapes of creamers and sugars and we’ll cover that another time.

Today let’s take a break from pink depression glass and look at your other must-have to set a fine table, elegant china dessert plates from French china maker Tressemann and Vogt. Most of us mix glass and china after all, so let’s look at this high quality Limoges dinnerware.

These rose sprigged plates are marked T&V France and a bit of research shows the mark dates to 1892 to 1907. This is high end dinnerware on par with Haviland, with thin translucent china, lovely scalloped shapes and refined beautiful decoration.

You can see these pretty plates combined with Heisey Gayoso pink goblets in a Tablescape Thursday post. The combination works great since all the pieces have an elegance and graceful vintage charm.

Do you enjoy detective stories? This isn’t a whodunit with dead bodies or great bank heists, but a safe quiet hunt to identify exactly what this goblet is.

My grandma had a set of red tumblers that had honeycombs on the side that I always liked. Years later I found that honeycomb pattern is Georgian.

Many companies produced a Georgian pattern, including Fenton, Cambridge, Paden City, Hocking and Viking. Some of the pieces are different enough you can tell them apart but others require detective work. The book Great American Glass of the Roaring 20s and Depression Era, Book 2 by Measell and Wiggins has an insert that gives good clues for you.

Luckily for me this goblet is easy. See the bulge in the stem and the spots on the foot? That bulge has the honeycomb facets and the foot has raised honeycombs on the underside. Easy peasey. Viking Glass made this shape.

The next step is which goblet? Viking made a lot of pieces, from low footed sherbets to tall iced tea tumblers, goblets, cocktails and juices. It’s hard to tell by eyeballing a goblet, you should measure the height and the capacity. Always fill the goblet right to the rim so it just shy of spilling and give the capacity in ounces. (A helpful tip is that an ounce is two tablespoons and there are eight ounces to a cup.) Armed with dimensions you can look in books or in a reliable website. My favorite book is Elegant Glass: Early, Depression, & Beyond by Debbie and Randy Coe which gives accurate dimensions and great photos. For patterns not in Coe & Coe, try using Replacements.com.

This particular goblet is 6 1/8 inches tall and holds between 12 and 13 ounces. It’s too big for the water and much too big for the wine goblet. It is the iced tea.

Mystery solved!

If you have a detective story to share please leave a comment. It would be fun to hear from you and if you like, you could contribute to a blog post with your detective work.
