If you are older then I am (24ish), you will remember a day when the only way to capture the picture on your computer screen was to hold the fn+print screen buttons and then change the dimensions in Photoshop. Not anymore boys and girls. If you know me you know I love to make workflows more efficient. This usually involves reducing steps to save time. Thumblalizr.com is a perfect example of this demonstrated.

Thumblalizr works by simply typing in a url and waiting about a minute or less for it to render a thumbnail of the website. Once the thumbnail is rendered you are offered 150,320,640,800,1024,1280 pixel resolutions to download. You can even input a custom resolution. The picture quality is acceptable but not great and for now you can only download them as jpegs.

This is extremely useful for those who deal in the business of web design because it allows us to quickly grab one of our finished products at their current state and post it to our portfolio site in a matter of minutes. If you use snipshot to edit your pictures then the turnaround time is seconds. I’m really excited about this and will certainly be incorporating it into my workflow.

For the past two years my experience in this field has allowed for me to witness a revolutionary change in how we share information. It’s also offered me the ability to capitalize on being an early adopter (and geek). The only caveat would be encompassing what I do in a few words when discussing it with those who ask. In this classified I was reading the prospective position was looking for a multi-media editor. Some others may say new media or even rich media. I like to say digital media. Still unless you are talking to someone in the industry you never get the response garnered by a doctor or lawyer. So why give it these names, because neither one truly defines what it is. To get down to it let’s start at media. As a noun “media” can generally mean any type of information or even a holder and transmitter of information. Is a cassette tape media? Yes. A painting canvas is too, but do I or your average multi-media enthusiast use these tools. Perhaps not, because they are analogue and we are talking about digital information. So it’s more than that. It’s “rich” as appose to being “cold”. Confused yet? By rich I mean interactive . The user can control how they want to experience it. Television is usually described as being cold because you have no say in when you will be able to watch a show (unless you have a DVR device).

The next thing we’ll agree on is what I do involves computers, since the birth of computers, they have been terminals for controlling and producing information. Computers make things digital and allow for more efficient production techniques. Still this computer generated information that I’m talking about has to be distributed. You can’t just have your audience come over to your house or office to experience the information. Here’s where the internet comes in. It acts as a distribution channel for this type of media. As opposed to traditional media where distribution of major resources($$$) is used to generate distribute major products and reap large profits($$$). This is new – media. With minimal resources you can distribute your content on a major scale. So blogs are the new periodicals and podcasting and vlog casting is the new television, but not quite. This experience is still different than turning channels. Although some are attempted replicated this. So we’ll say they are the new VHS but you can still control how you experience it.

To sum it up, when I say I work in digital media, I’m saying I manage the production of digital content (audio, graphic, text, and video) that will be distributed exclusively through the internet. Thereby making it free to reach the maximum amount of people and allowing it to be experience at their convenience. They can download it to their ipods (or iphones) and take it with them. They can control what section they want to experience and go back through the archives if necessary and they can share this information with a friend. These rules and a few others are make up the canon of internet content until a new philosophy emerges.

picture: random google image result for “video player”

As you can read here facebook has taken down the cherished audio application because of pressure from the RIAA. Well that sucks. That being said the audio player did have it’s faults, technically speaking of course. It worked by simply pointing to a mp3 file already hosted on the internet. I believe the developer was working on a version that allowed you to upload music but otherwise this app demanded some basic knowledge of html linking from the user. Also the player lacked a volume control bar. Usually the developer at least offers a “mute” button. In most instances it seems that volume control is a well desired and useful feature but some developers opt out. This isn’t exclusive to audio either. In between being brilliant and working on being brilliant I may enjoy playing a silly tennis game online while listening to music (becuase the game’s music is some cheesey loop that becomes increasingly annoying with every listen). The problem with this game is that it doesn’t offer any volume options. I make due by boosting my itunes volume while lowering the computer’s volume.

So what should a media player have? It should have a play/pause button. A progress bar that shows when the video is completely downloaded (unless it’s streaming) and a scrubber to allow you to shuttle through the video at you leisure with the total time and time remaining clearly visible. All of these can be located at the bottom of the player and to the bottom right there should be an ADJUSTABLE VOLUME BAR!!! For kicks you can throw in a “fullscreen” button and if you are really interested in getting cool points you might add “share, embed, and podcast” links. Lastly the player must be in Flash. Windows media is restrictive, Quicktime is boring, and Real Player is just archaic. I could go on about why you should use Flash video (flv) but that’s another post.

Well here we ago. Another venture, this time solo. EF Media is short for …….. Eric Foster Media. It is a proactive endeavor to assist the general public in developing a web presence and understanding internet technology and culture. That may entail providing a website with a news page for blogging, picture gallery, biography page, links to your Myspace profile, audio and video, e-commerce and other possible solutions. It may also be as simple recommending using Google’s mail service Gmail rather than any other competitor. Either way EF Media is here to help.

I first started working for a television production company that produced Reading Rainbow. On occasion I was the stand in for Lavar. The same company produced the ill-fated but critically acclaimed “Miracle’s Boys” which garnered me a place in infamy on IMDB. After that I left to start inthelab.biz which won an award for Best Video Blog from the 2006 Black Weblog Awards. From there I realized that creating great content without having the finances to support it was turning me into a starving artist. I partnered to start Paradox New Media and produced a couple of websites. Now solo I’m striving to find a common ground between entrepreneur and idealist.
