This episode is dedicated to the great Mr. Owain Phyfe, who has inspired me in so many ways since discovering his work now many, many moons ago. The picture below is exactly how I remember him; the day I first plowed dreamy-eyed but determinedly through the VA Renaissance fair, to find out where that -enchanting- music was coming from. And ever since, I have been positively captivated by his incredible voice, his passionate, unique creations, and his lyrical style. To my knowledge, Mr. Phyfe was a self-taught musician, ancient & medieval linguist and surely, a scholar, and for that, he blows me away even more.

Sadly, he passed this year due to pancreatic cancer, but his memory, through his artistry and pure, captivating music, will live on. Thank you for your song, Mr. Phyfe. You were the first and only real bard I think I've ever met, and you inspire me to this day. ♥♥♥

On a brighter note, I'd also like to give a shout-out to Madlenka, Bagoas, Mavi, Nina Amaya, and my other friends who're currently attending the Darbukastani Independence Days celebration this weekend. :D I wish I could be with you all, but my hips are shimmying in time with your music and my spirit is with y'all, wherever we each may be. :) ♥♥♥

This episode baaaarely happened, so I'm SUPER stoked that it's finally HERE! XD (First I was having one HECK of a time w/choosing what songs should be played and where, and then we had three, count 'em, THREE power outages on the day the show was supposed to be done, so I was goin' NUTS! *lol*) But it's alll good now, and I hope you like the results. :) (Which are alll work and kid safe, btw. ^_^)

For those of you who like the more traditional style of bellydance music, this show is for YOU. (Though there should be something for everyone here, thanks to the styles and artists featured. :D So even if you're a Tribal goddess or Fusion fanatic, or if ya just prefer your music to have a more modern twist, there's something in here for you, too. :))

This episode has something of a time-traveling theme, as it takes you from medieval and renaissance-inspired music from around the world, to "classical" Middle Eastern music (created in the mid-to-late 20th century), all the way up to discoteque tunes you might hear in the Middle East today. :) We've got a little Corvus Corax, some of the great Oum Kalthoum, as well as a touch of the stars, courtesy of Googoosh, Hengameh & Haifa Wehbe. :) But no matter WHAT era the music is from, I hope it -all- inspires you, uplifts you, and makes you wanna dance (even if it's just in your mind, in your car, in your office, or in front of the stove while cookin' dinner ;)). ♥

Hi guys! To all of my beautiful, wonderful, kind and truly awesome followers and listeners out there, who once subscribed to Eclectica's former incarnation, I wanted to give you guys a heads-up, as well as some good news! Guess what? ECLECTICA'S BACK, AND BETTER THAN EVER! ^_^

While this blog will no longer be used, Eclectica has a NEW page, at eclectipod.blogspot.com, and will also soon (hopefully, if the iTunes gods are kind), have a renewed listing on iTunes as well. :D There's also a Facebook page, to go with the new times, and the show's first brand new episode is already out, waiting for your ears to explore! :D So if you miss the old Eclectica, or wish that the show would come back 'round again, I warmly and humbly invite you to come join me at the show's new domains, and to check out its new incarnation. ^_^

I truly hope you like the show's new look and feel, and that I'll see your smiling faces soon in our new Subscribers queue & comments sections over on the new page, as well as over on our Facebook page. ^_^

Due to lack of active listenership (aside from my dearest friends family, who've supported me all the way; and to whom I'm tremendously grateful), Eclectica has been put on the proverbial back-burner. The time & involvement each episode requires in direct comparison to the receipt & exposure the show seems to be getting is grossly disproportionate, so the Selchie is gonna take a little break for a while. (In part, to gather better resources for a potential re-release of the show; but also to focus on other things; re-prioritize, pursue other avenues of creativity, and recoop from a variety of situations.)

However, if you do listen and would still like the show to continue, please let me hear from you. :) Folks can still reach me via djselchie@gmail.com, & I will still be looking for music off and on, with the hope of getting Eclectica back into production at some point.
But for now (and perhaps indefinitely), this little waterling needs to delve into her wee bag of tricks, and see if she can't come out with something even better for a potential next time.

Thanks to those of you who showed me-and the podcast-your limitless devotion, boundless enthusiasm and unending support. Mehopes that if the show is to reincarnate, that it returns bigger, better, brighter, (more regularly), and is even more meaningful than its previous incarnations. ;)

Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!

First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):)

Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)

This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians!

Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)

Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia!

Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!

Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)

NOTE: For those of you who may not know, the beginning of the word "Celtic" is pronounced with a hard "c,"making the word sound like "ˈkel-tik."

If you use it beginning with an "s" sound (or what's called "a soft c"), that refers to the pro. basketball team from Boston; not the groups of Indo-European peoples & languages predominantly found in Wales, Ireland & the Scottish Highlands. A Sickly Apology for the St. Pat's Show's Delay

Greetings everyone! Unfortunately I'm sick as crud atm, and that's delayed the production on the Celtic/St. Paddy's Day show. :( Please forgive me for this delay, but know that as soon as I no longer sound as if I've been gargling gravel and can finish a sentence w/o coughing, I'll get back to recording my voiceover portions of the podcast; so it will be live and active and ready to go! Happy harvest season, everybody!

Well, if you haven't already guessed, I imagine you've picked up on the fact that I haven't been able to put out a podcast in a while.

To those of you who have been waiting for such, I humbly apologize.

Up until recently I have been in the midst of a rather traumatic move, not knowing where I was going to be for a bit, and in fact living in a wee hotel room, unsure of pretty much.. everything. But good news! Today's a new day, and I am (very gratefully) landed in a wonderful place with a bunch of amazing people around me. ^_^ Therefore, I am extremely happy to be able to announce to you, that

ECLECTICA IS NOW OFFICIALLY BACK ON AND IN PRODUCTION, AND THERE ISONE HELL OF A SUPERB EPISODE IN THE WORKS AND ON THE WAY- FOR YOU!!! :D:D

All I can say is; if you like Mid. Eastern &/or bellydance music, -you are going to want to listen to Eclectica's next episode!- :D:D (I'm not gonna spoil it all by spilling the beans here, but srsly- trust me! ^_^)

I'm in the process of getting the CDs I need to snag the songs pertinent for E's next (come-back) episode, and as soon as I do, this thing will be ON!! ^_^ Plus I have a lot of -really, really- great names where our next ep's lineup is concerned- (and who want to hear the show when it's all up and published! *squee!*) So keep your ears peeled (ew- I mean, figuratively, please!), do a little bit of imagining, take a guess or two, and if you or anyone you know likes Middle Eastern or belly-danceable, awesome tunes, come and check on in for the next episode of Eclectica! :D:D

Contemplating the Next Eclectica

So what kind of show would all of you listeners out there like to hear from me & Eclectica next? What can I improve? What's been under-covered or over-done? Is there a theme or a style of music you'd like to hear? Is there something you'd like me to focus more or less on? Twahk ta me, twahk ta me! ;D

I've been pondering a few different themes for upcoming shows, n' I'd really love to get some feedback. :) How about a show all about featuring exclusively up-tempo, up-beat, Dance/Techno/Rave/Trance/House and/or EBM music? Or perchance something darker or heavier in style? I know I've got a few friends who really dig harder rock, and I've been looking about n' finding a few pieces that would really fit that Metallica-inspired, Grunge &/or Punk rock theme. ^_^

How about Spring-themed music? Something a little Pagan, w/talk of spring holidays, satyrs & Wiccan, old Celtic, Nature & seasonal inspirations, beliefs and practices? What about a show focused entirely on mythological or Fantasy creatures; like faeries, dragons, merfolk, etc.? (I could probably do a whole show each on the fae in one ep. and merfolk in another... ;D)

So what do you think? So many inspirations, so many potential directions to go! :D:D

Episode 7: Audible Anomalies

Eclectica Episode 7: Audible Anomalies

I've been sitting on this episode for a bit; trying to decide whether or not to publish it as-it was when I first "finished" it, on the night of its creation. Since my microphone woes have not quiiite yet been resolved (though a remedy is fast approaching on the horizon- with the help of UPS ;)), it occurred to me to try something new for a change, and put a little twist in the mix. What exactly? Well, I thought I might let my screen reader speak for me this time, as our temporary show announcer! ^_^ I thought it'd be something neat, new and unique, you know?

But in the end, I decided to go with the advice of a more seasoned podcaster. Therefore, in lieu of letting Jorgan the Electronic Voice Announcer speak up for me (to save you all from having to bear with my cruddy microphone), I chose to re-produce it, w/my own (hopefully pleasing & endearingly oddball) voice. :)

As for the rest of the show's content; a couple of weeks ago I got a "bee in my bonnet" to suddenly make an impromptu, relatively short podcast centered around all of these great bits of music that have not (as yet) fit into any particular show or theme on Eclectica. Therefore, they're the show's "anomalies" as it were. :) -This is NOT so say that these pieces or bands are weird or bizarre or freakish in any negative sense of the words. Not one bit. These artists & their music all rock considerably (otherwise, why the heck would I feature them here??). They are all just so good, their music could go just about anywhere. And thus, mehopes you see my problem. ;)

But I'll let the music speak to you for itself. :)

As always, if you have any thoughts or ideas you might like to relay to me regarding the show, I'd love to hear from you; my rockin' public. :D You can always feel free to contact me (via my new e-mail addy; djselchie@gmail.com) about programming, artists whom you might like to hear featured on Eclectica, etc., or for any other reason if you wish. I've been wondering about what happened to a favorite local DJ whom I no longer hear on the radio anymore, so tonight I decided to go research what was up. Un/Fortunately I found a site that discussed the problem; a station-wide "transition" from one format to another, and it inspired me to write this in response.

..It also reminded me of why Eclectica exists, thus I thought it only right to mention that here, and give proper credit where credit is due. :)

The Slightly Super-Sized, Wuvvy-Duvvy Valentine's Day Show!

Okay, maybe it's not completely lovey-dovey, but upon examination of the songs I've predominantly used in this episode, some might think it's close... I'm a sap, n' it shows. ;)

I tried over and over and over again to make the music I wanted to use in this episode line up to create a storytelling ep. of sorts, but nothing ever quiiite worked out- so I just used a refinement of my first list; where the items have been lined up the way they are because they just sound good that way. :) One could say that they're now in little thematic groupings of things like "love lost," "love gained" and "love sought," but the only two pieces w/real placement meaning are those placed at the very end. ("Where Beauty Moves" and "Breakable.")

Upon final examination (and the nagging feeling that I was missing something- which inspired this realization) I kind of wish I'd put "Where Beauty Moves" before "Strict Machine" (as the feelings of the song would go better together, it'd be a better transition from "Beauty" to "Machine," and it wouldn't be such a jarring change from "Sadeness" to "Beauty.."), but at this point the work is done, and I'm not up for re-doing the whole end of the show again, like I've already done once. ;) (It's a LOT of work! :)) Perhaps you'll decide to buy these tunes online or in your local area somewhere, and you can make your own fantabulous playlist. :):)

This podcast is dedicated to my friend Jeff Watkins, who died recently, but who beat the odds day by day since even before the day of his birth. He was magnificently brilliant, kindhearted, sweet and strong- in mind and spirit, if not so much in body. Jeff, thank you for the time and love you gave me. I am SO proud of this one!:D

I figured a few tricks out w/Audacity, and this ep. doesn't have any major flubs or big issues like other previous ones have. I worked on it all night & into today (as I totally got inspired n' it lit a major fire under my butt- you fellow artists know what that's like), and I'm so glad I did. :D:D
My mic still sucks, but I found a new way to lessen the multi-track-garbling issue, and I'm really, rerally pleased w/Eclectica's latest episode. ^_^
The credits are still forth-coming (another detail oriented, time-consuming thing I need to do when I wake back up), but they will indeed soon appear- so you can find all of the artists' awesome music. :D Edit: They have arrived! See below for where to browse & buy the work of these awesome & unique artists! :D
I hope all of you out there in Listener-Land like it too!

Cleaning Up The Broken Pieces

Download: Eclectica's 1st Hallowe'en Episode, Part Deux

Well,
I finally had the nards to face my jacked up previous episodes, and though they may not sound perfect (I not ezzakly sure why/how my sound files keep gettin' all screwed up), I cleaned up some things and really hope you like the final result. (I realize that the quality loss is probably due to over-compression, n' that I could go back and replace every song file I have in my show to improve the sound quality, but w/the huge amount of man hours that it took to put it all together, frankly I just don't think I have the heart in me to try and do it again.) It took me a long time to try and face the mucky, cruddy, overly-digitized quality of just one of these pieces (a main track which was split between the first and second episodes), but now it's finally done (or, at least that part w/o redoing the whole thing), and I really hope you all like the "finished" product. :)

It'll take some more learning and doing and working w/Audacity to really get multi-track pieces up and running nicely, but I hope you'll bear w/me while I get my tech and software skills up to par, and that you'll at least enjoy your journey along the way. ;)

So saying, enuff w/the chatter! ;D Here's the second part of the long-awaited Hallowe'en episode, and mehopes you all like- whether it's All Hallows Eve, or just any occasion where some spooky music would fit your mood! ^_^

Hallowe'en Still Lives!! :D:D

The next installment of Eclectica is: Happy Hallowe'en!-Part 1

I have been SO EXCITED about my Hallowe'en episode for Ecltectia!!
I've been searching & searching, gathering & re-gathering music for some time now; in anticipation of making a Hallowe'en episode for you, my dear listeners- and all the folks like me who just ADORE the holiday. ^_^

Unfortunately however, my job & my organization of a very large zombie event in DC prevented me from working on it as much as I'd have liked until -after- All Hallow's Eve. :( -But never fear! I will NOT let that stop me from publishing all the fun, fantastic music I've compiled for this illustrious (if now past) occasion!

I've been bustin' my butt nights and weekends trying to put this crazy thing together, and I really hope you like what you hear. ^_^

I had to divide this super-sized episode into two parts, since when the whole thing was finished it ran a whopping hour and a half! (And there were still tracks I ended up omitting! O.O)

First off, as I spend much of each year garnering zombie music to play for the DC Zombie Lurch, we start this episode off with two spiffy songs that're zombie-related! :D Both come from the Podcast Music Network- (as do most of the songs I play here on Eclectica). :)

Next, a few fun tracks I encountered while scoping out the PMN; one which I don't truly think is about witches, and the other from a longtime favorite of mine- who's a master of the unusual, somewhat creepy, darker sound and wicked, wicked lyrics. ^_^

After that, I HAD to play something from a veritable icon in the Goth/spooky community- Voltaire! (I had the pleasure of seeing him live at CBGB's while I was spending some time in NYC, and he was super-nice. -After his performance I waited in line to speak to him, n' when it was my turn I relayed that I'd been having an uber-crappy day, and how much he'd made it better w/his awesome performance. What'd he do? He hugged me n' gave me a few bits of freebie merch to cheer me up. :):) What a good guy! :D:D)

After that comes a terribly appropriately-named band (well, at least where the holiday is concerned- but Hallowe'en or not- ya gotta love it! ;D), w/their even more appropos song "Halloween Girl." ..How could I resist?? ;D

Next up, one of my all-time favorite comedians- and you cannot imagine how elated I was to find he had some of his stuff on IODA! :D:D This guy is insanely funny- as long as you're not easily offended. ;) After that, check out this wicked song in the movie "Dead and Breakfast." If you like silly or fun horror mixed w/a bit of conscious cheese and a liberal dose of humour, you're gonna love this flick- and the super music Zachariah supplies for it all throughout the film! :D

Lastly (for this section of the ep. anyway), we have a seriously spooky tale told by a very talented storyteller, whom I've had the pleasure of seeing on a few occassions. He does lots of pieces inspired by the fae, vampires and such, and this is- aside from perhaps one other, just about the scariest piece I've heard of his. So, it's up- and you'll hear the end of it on Eclectica's next installment! *evil grins*

If You Wanna Get Your Spooky On

While prepping the show's latest episode, I found a little story online to narrate for this demo I wanted to put forth for a particular podcast-series that I'm a big fan of. It's one of the many versions of an oooold campfire/ghost story that I'm extremely fond of; called "Taily Po." This version is written by Veronica Byrd, & I thought some of you might get a kick out of hearing it while you wait for the next ep. of Eclectica to come out. :)

It's not superb sound quality, but it's a fun piece, and I hope you enjoy it, nonetheless. :)

So What's This Name Change Stuff???

Would Not a Rose by any Other Name Smell Just as Sweet..?

..Errrm... no. ;)

I don't know if anyone's noticed (or frankly if anyone truly cares..) but if you have or if you do, some might be asking "so, what the *bleep!*'s up w/this whole 'DJ Selchie' thing??" Well, I've always wanted to spin music, have a DJ name n' be all "professional," and as I've always hated my first name, and am in the process of changing it, I thought it'd be better to publish my podcast (as well as do anything professionally musical unless it's singing my own original songs) under a destinctive, very special and uniquely illustrative pseudonym. (..A pen name, a nome de plume, a "professional name," etc.)

As I'm a HUGE water-baby,as well as a total mermaid & selchie fan, I thought I'd name myself after one of these... Since I've got Scottish and Irish blood, as well as features many have noted as being seal or selchie-like (such as big, dark eyes, long, dark hair, being more awkward on land than I am in the water, etc.), because I love faerie folklore and am a dweller of both land and a lover of the sea, I thought the selchie would be most appropriate. :)

Now, I know most folks will look at my DJ moniker and erroneously pronounce it "sel'-chee," but dernit, slapping a "k" in there where I was tuaght (through admittedly what little Gaelic training I have) a "ch" should be just doesn't look (or feel) right to me. So I stayed in keeping w/one of the older (and one of the many variations of) the original, Gaelic spellings. :) So just turn that "ch" sound into that of a "k," and you've got it right down pat. ^_^

I hope it doesn't throw too many people for a loop, and that you all dig the new name. As I'm a huge fan of the mythic, ethereal & mystical, as well as fantasy & the generally fantabulous, I hope this name will suit me well, as well as the wonderful tunes I hope to spin- and do credit to the beautifyl fae-seal maidens from whom I have gotten this moniker. :)
