Autechre are currently touring following their release of Oversteps. Unfortunately that tour doesn’t look like it’s going to come anywhere close to Cambodia. The nearest they get is Japan on the 4th and 5th of June.

I had hoped they’d get a gig date setup in Singapore, which I could probably have justified going to. No joy unfortunately. Still, now that they have another release in the works, Move of Ten, to be released on July 12th, perhaps they’ll continue do a few more gigs later in the year and I might catch them. It’s been quite a while since I last saw them – back in April 2006 – and it was an awesome gig. So would be nice to catch them again.

A bit of a round-up of news, including upcoming releases and music work, and a little nod to my own last release, Mucilage Biopsy - a free ABCNET EP for you to download.

Whilst it’s been super-quiet on ebauche.net for the past 5 months or so, I can assure you that I have been anything other than quiet.

At the end of last year I got offered work on my first feature-film, titled Five Day Shelter (view info on IMDB). It struck me as quite a dark film and I had to be careful to avoid encouraging acts of self-harm as a result of overly dark musical content!

I had only 9 weeks to compose the score for the entire film, as well as handle the sound design. At the end of those 9 weeks I boarded a plane and headed to Chennai in order to oversee the post-production in a sound studio there. That took another 3 weeks. By the time we finished the film and I said farewell to the rest of the post-production team I was well and truly exhausted, possibly more so than I’ve ever been before (trying to compose a feature length score in that time whilst also trying to balance running a web-design company is not recommended).

I figured that seeing as I had travelled so far I might as well go a little further, and from India I flew to Kuala Lumpur and on to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, where I’ve holed up since. It’s given me a chance to catch up with some friends who’ve been living here for a while, including the proprietor of my first release, Invisible Agent boss Warren Daly.

I took a little time off around Christmas but have now settled into life in Cambodia and am going to be sticking around here for a while. What’s on the cards musically whilst I’m here?

Score and sound design for “As The Light Leaks In”, short film by Stitch Films

Remix of a track from John Dalton’s latest release

Remix of a track from Love Rhino’s last album, Tumatakuru

Brand new Ebauche track on a joint release on Stasis Records

Mastering a new Danseizure release

Most of the above has to be completed in the next month, so I’m going to be a little busy for the next while.

Also, I finally got round to uploading and creating a release page for last years ABCNET EP, Mucilage Biopsy. If you haven’t heard it yet then head over here to download this free music release.

Another free music download release, this time it’s my long-awaited ABCNET EP, Mucilage Biopsy, which carries you through a dark and unusual landscape of sound.

Weird synths build into walls of sound and fall away into a breathtaking panorama of auditory hallucinations; bells chime and disappear into the distance; distorted voices bubble under the surface, before being washed away; and mangled beats, held at arms length, burst into view when they can be restrained no longer.

Listen to the full release online

As is the standard with the ABCNET format, there is only one track. Sort of a cross between a live mix and a release.

You can download a zip of this free Net EP by clicking the link below, and it’s also available over on the Alphabet Set website.

Mp3 Quality: 320kbps!

File Size: 79Mb

Album Artwork: Included

Thanks

Thanks to the Alphabet Set for putting this out there and always being supportive. Thanks to Love Rhino for his kind words and a guest slot at his album launch where I got a chance to test this release out (and the impending nature of said album launch got me to pull my finger out and compose a large part of what’s on this EP).

Love Rhino (aka Jonathan O’Riordan) is having a launch party for his new album “Tumatakuru”. I’m playing support on the night, alongside Halo Darkly. Gig details after a bit of info on the album:

“Tumatakuru” is the long awaited debut album from Love Rhino. Containing 11 tracks and running to 53 minutes the predominantly instrumental album is a blend of electronic and acoustic compositions recorded in New Zealand.

For various reasons the release has been delayed longer than planned but we can now bring it to you in all its glory. The CD will officially be on sale on Saturday June 20th and can be purchased at Road or Spin Dizzy Records and will also be available by mail order through the Love Rhino web site.

Preview tracks from the album here: www.myspace.com/lrhino.
Another free music download for you: a personal favourite of mine, Autechre's 15 minute mix on BBC Radio 3's Mixing it!

Another day, another free music download! For your listening pleasure I’ve uploaded a recording I came across of Autechre’s 15 Minute Mix for Radio 3 Mixing It. This recording was made on 30th March 2003.

It features one of the most densely enjoyable mix sets I’ve heard, with a huge variety of tunes layered on top of each other. I can pick out snippets of things that I recognise, but for the most part I haven’t a notion where one track ends and another begins.

Fast paced

Another thing about this mix is just how much energy it has. It’s bouncy and quick and funny.

According to the radio commentary at the end, there are 30 tracks included in the mix, but unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to find a track listing.

Highly recommended! Download here from this link or click the play button below.
