How to Add Twitter Usernames with a .CSV or Excel Spreadsheet

If you have a large mailing list or database of people, and you are one of the hip people who uses Twitter, you're in luck. With a bit of magic, Twitter can find out which of those e-mails are on Twitter, and import them to your Follow list.

Here's how:

Save your spreadsheet as a .CSV file - you need to have the following column headers (and only these): First Name, Last Name, Email Address. See this Gmail KB article
Make a new Gmail account. The best way to do this is to have someone send you an invitation through their Gmail account. You can also send yourself an invitation. The reason you want to do it this way is because if you are a random person signing up for the first time from gmail.com, they will ask to send you a SMS message to verify you're a human. You can only do that once, so try the invitation method. You should now have a completely blank Gmail account with only the welcome e-mails in your inbox, and nobody in your contacts list.
Import your .CSV file into your Gmail contacts list. On the left side of Gmail, you'll see the word "Contacts" - go in here and on the upper right is the word "Import". Follow these steps if you get confused. NOTE: You can only hold a few thousand contacts at a time. Break your spreadsheet into multiple chunks if you need to and repeat this step after you upload your first chunk to Twitter.
Log in to Twitter
On the upper-right, click "Find People"
Click the tab called "Find on Other Networks" - Use your newly-made Gmail account to have Twitter pull in those contacts. You're done! Read on for another tip.
I recommend making a note of who these contacts are so you can put them into a Twitter List later for a quick look at your customer or mailing list database tweets. More on these new Twitter Lists can be found on Hubspot's blog post:

If you have more contacts that couldn't fit into your Gmail contact list, go into your Contacts section, delete everyone in there, and Import chunk #2.
Rinse and Repeat if desired.

How to Swiffer without a Swiffer

Sick of dragging out a huge mop + bucket of crappy water around, I needed a new solution to a dirty linoleum kitchen floor - without needing to buy a Swiffer.

Here's how I did it:

Sweep the floor as usual, picking up loose dirt and things, put in a dustpan and throw in the trash. Well, don't throw it - it usually ends up back on the floor that way.
Get some of your favorite cleaning wipes. They come in a plastic canister, are moist, and you pull them up as if they were tissues. Soggy Kleenex if you will. Either way, I had some of the Clorox brand wipes from Target.
Pull two of them out.
Place on floor. Don't drop them, you're not good enough to have them land perfectly flat.
Step on them with shoes on. I recommend Saucony running shoes.
Do a little dance. The trick here is to scrub back and forth with your feet staying on the floor. Try to incorporate "The Robot."

And you're done! Depending on how filthy of a pig you are, you may need to use quite a few cleaning wipes, but compared to a Swiffer, it's more fun and less expensive!

In 60 seconds or less, you TOO can make this quick and delicious pie.

The Story:
My girlfriend wanted some pie the other night. We haven't had dessert in our apartment for some time. Stop & Shop was open (they're open late), but it was late and we had a podcast to finish. Also, pies from the store cost money.

The PIE:
1. Grab a small plate of some sort. Not as small as a saucer, but just a bit bigger.
2. Unwrap 5 granola bars. These should be the Quaker oats chocolate chip granola bars.
3. Lay them out like this: |||| so you basically have 4 bars side-by-side, and one laying lengthwise around them.
4. Squish the hell out of them until you have something that resembles a round granola-y pie crust
5. Slather two Snack-Packs of chocolate pudding on top of your granola mass. Use good care in texturing the surface so it looks totally delicious.
6. Tell your girlfriend you got a really expensive pie and get kisses.
Bonus: it slices pretty well, believe it or not. You get pretty perfect little triangles of fun if you did step 4 right.

Random thoughts from people our age...received this as an e-mail forward from a friend. Too much of it is true, but it's reassuring I'm not the only one. Not all of it is true for me, for example the first one, but you be the judge:

-More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can't wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that's not only better, but also more directly involves me.

-Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

-I don't understand the purpose of the line, "I don't need to drink to have fun." Great, no one does. But why start a fire with flint and sticks when they've invented the lighter?

-Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you're going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you're crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

-That's enough, Nickelback.

-I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

-Is it just me, or are 80% of the people in the "people you may know" feature on Facebook people that I do know, but I deliberately choose not to be friends with?

-Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn't work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message boards or FAQ's. We just figured it out. Today's kids are soft.

-There is a great need for sarcasm font.

-Sometimes, I'll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the f was going on when I first saw it.

-I think everyone has a movie that they love so much, it actually becomes stressful to watch it with other people. I'll end up wasting 90 minutes shiftily glancing around to confirm that everyone's laughing at the right parts, then making sure I laugh just a little bit harder (and a millisecond earlier) to prove that I'm still the only one who really, really gets it.

-How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

-I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

- I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

-The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.

- A recent study has shown that playing beer pong contributes to the spread of mono and the flu. Yeah, if you suck at it.

- Was learning cursive really necessary?

- Lol has gone from meaning, "laugh out loud" to "I have nothing else to say".

- I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

- Answering the same letter three times or more in a row on a Scantron test is absolutely petrifying.

- My brother's Municipal League baseball team is named the Stepdads. Seeing as none of the guys on the team are actual stepdads, I inquired about the name. He explained, "Cuz we beat you, and you hate us." Classy, bro.

- Whenever someone says "I'm not book smart, but I'm street smart", all I hear is "I'm not real smart, but I'm imaginary smart".

- How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear what they said?

- I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars teams up to prevent a dick from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers!

- Every time I have to spell a word over the phone using 'as in' examples, I will undoubtedly draw a blank and sound like a complete idiot. Today I had to spell my boss's last name to an attorney and said "Yes that's G as in...(10 second lapse)..ummm...Goonies"

-What would happen if I hired two private investigators to follow each other?

- While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it...thanks Mario Kart.

- MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

- Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

- I find it hard to believe there are actually people who get in the shower first and THEN turn on the water.

-Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

- I would like to officially coin the phrase 'catching the swine flu' to be used as a way to make fun of a friend for hooking up with an overweight woman. Example: "Dave caught the swine flu last night."

-I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

- Bad decisions make good stories

-Whenever I'm Facebook stalking someone and I find out that their profile is public I feel like a kid on Christmas morning who just got the Red Ryder BB gun that I always wanted. 546 pictures? Don't mind if I do!

- Is it just me or do high school girls get sluttier & sluttier every year?

-If Carmen San Diego and Waldo ever got together, their offspring would probably just be completely invisible.

-Why is it that during an ice-breaker, when the whole room has to go around and say their name and where they are from, I get so incredibly nervous? Like I know my name, I know where I'm from, this shouldn't be a problem....

-You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you've made up your mind that you just aren't doing anything productive for the rest of the day.

-Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after DVDs? I don't want to have to restart my collection.

-There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

-I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

- "Do not machine wash or tumble dry" means I will never wash this ever.

-I hate being the one with the remote in a room full of people watching TV. There's so much pressure. 'I love this show, but will they judge me if I keep it on? I bet everyone is wishing we weren't watching this. It's only a matter of time before they all get up and leave the room. Will we still be friends after this?'

-I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Dammit!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What'd you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

- I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

-When I meet a new girl, I'm terrified of mentioning something she hasn't already told me but that I have learned from some light internet stalking.

-I like all of the music in my iTunes, except when it's on shuffle, then I like about one in every fifteen songs in my iTunes.

-Why is a school zone 20 mph? That seems like the optimal cruising speed for pedophiles..

- As a driver I hate pedestrians, and as a pedestrian I hate drivers, but no matter what the mode of transportation, I always hate cyclists.

-Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.

-It should probably be called Unplanned Parenthood.

-I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

-Even if I knew your social security number, I wouldn't know what do to with it.

-Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, hitting the G-spot, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I’d bet my ass everyone can find and push the Snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time every time...

-My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day "Dad what would happen if you ran over a ninja?" How the hell do I respond to that?

-It really pisses me off when I want to read a story on CNN.com and the link takes me to a video instead of text.

-I wonder if cops ever get pissed off at the fact that everyone they drive behind obeys the speed limit.

-I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

-I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than Kay.

How to Make Me Not Want to Buy Your Ice Cream

Make your huge picture of ice cream glow.
I don't want your mutant ice cream. This [probably stolen] ice cream picture on a local mini-golf place's website has a white outline around it as if they poorly used the lasso tool to cut the image out of its original [yup, stolen] image and not care to zoom in and cut it perfectly out. (click pic to huge-ify)

Really, though, why not just show me your ice cream stand? It looks nice in real life. Even a low quality picture from a camera phone would be better than your plain vanilla stolen mutant ice cream picture.
Leave a bunch of typos in the text below the mutant ice cream.
I don't want my ice cream served by morons. They will figure out a way to screw up the scoops.

8. Zoom into photos

The one feature everyone is asking for, Push Notifications, is in development but it won't make it into 3.0. You can expect it in a 3.1 update later this summer.

HOW-TO: Moon Walk Like MJ

You've waited long enough. Now's the time to calmly bust out with a moonwalk when someone makes a bet that you can't. To see a visual of this incredibly cool dance move, watch the how to moonwalk video from which I transcripted the following steps:

Find a smooth surface. The smoother, the better. Wooden floors or stage will do best. Soft dance shoes help
Back straight. Feet together pointing forward
'L" position - Lift your right leg, place your toes down on the floor about a foot behind your left leg
Balance - Learn to keep your balance. To make it easier, increase the width between your feet.
The slide - lean back onto your rear leg and slide the left heel back and into the floor so it finishes behind the right leg-- and at the end of the movement, snap the heel of your left foot up off the floor. The toes of both feet should never come off the floor, even when the heels do
The snap - As you snap your left heel up off the floor, your right heel should simultaneously snap down onto the floor.
Copy - From the finishing position on the last move, duplicate the slide on the other foot
The head - as you slide back, move your head forward to create an illusion of leaving it left behind due to the movement.
The arms - swing your arms as if you were walking forward normally
Practice.

How to Find a Lost Hamster or Gerbil in 9 Steps

A couple months ago, I got up for work and discovered one hamster in its cage -- there were supposed to be two in the cage. Here are the steps I took to find the little guy:

Stay calm - freaking out over your missing buddy will only make it harder to find. Start by realizing that it is still in the home somewhere. Running around like a crazy person will only get your friend stepped on as you rush around.
Investigate - if you have another hamster in their cage, like I did, you don't want them escaping the same way the other one did. I left the top gate open. Derrr
Process of elimination - If you start ruling out areas of your home that your pet could have gone, your search area will get a lot smaller and you will get more confident in your search. My bedroom door was closed that night, so I knew they couldn't be in my room. I then kept the door closed so they couldn't move in there. This is essentially the trick: completely search an area (i.e. the bathroom) - if you don't find them after looking real hard, close the door to that area. This works for full rooms as well as closets.
Be thorough - The theme here is confidence. Don't rule out one of those rooms until you have looked in every little nook and behind every single object.
Listen - After you've blocked off enough rooms and have narrowed it down to a few main rooms, relax one more time and just listen. Stay still for a while as it may take some time for your tiny pet to move enough to make some noise. My hamster was making a scratching noise... then I realized it came from my left... moving closer, it was coming from my kitchen... listening further and I figured out it was behind my dishwashing machine.
Find! - You may need to move large appliances like my dishwasher in order to confirm you found the little guy. Be careful here, as you may *gasp* crush the thing! Flashlights and slowwwww movements are important here until you make a visual with your pet.
Bribe - Your pet is most likely hungry, thirsty, or frustrated in general. Offer some food bits to get it to poke its head out.
Pounce - When you go to grab your hamster, its instinct is to run away, back into the dusty, dirty hard-to-reach corner of wherever it's been hiding out. Make sure you have a plan for this and try to get it on the first grab.
Rejoice - FINALLY, you got your pet. Now tell your workplace that you'll be late and wash your hands.

Wolfram Alpha - looking for feedback

I don't care what anyone says - it's pretty cool. Of the few queries I actually entered into Wolfram Alpha, most of them came back with very intelligent answers. After so much pre-release hype, I wonder if it measures up to what everyone had been saying about this new kind of data-driven engine.

Do you have any cool search queries that Wolfram Alpha was able to answer for you?
Was there something it simply could not compute that it should have been able to?

SUMO Paint - a Flash-based graphic editing web-app

Flash has proven yet again to be a pretty cool web app development platform. SUMO Paint is a free image editing application, similar to Photoshop - lets you work with layers, tools, swatches, filters, and all that useful stuff. It's totally web-based .. even SUMO Paint's website is done in Flash and is very lightweight (47kb), with deep link controls and right-clickability to sooth the soul.

Did they make all of this? Are they using a Flash engine that is out in the public somewhere?

I am still waiting for the Apple iPhone to support Flash.. alas, that will never happen.

I remember using StumbleUpon and seeing an even better Flash-based Photoshop clone, but you get the point: it's just plain cool that Flash, as a platform, has gone from only annoying, flashing banner ads to enveloping a whole range of neat things [as well as annoying, flashing banner ads].

SharePoint Designer 2007 is Microsoft's Office '07 version of FrontPage, basically. It's a WYSIWYG HTML editor designed to be integrated with a whole slew of Office products. I'm too afraid to actually try to use it for SharePoint, however, but I've been using it to do simple updates to the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund website among others. SPD has been updated with today's standards in "proper" HTML and CSS rules according to the WC3. The poor man's Dreamweaver ain't so bad.

So the story goes..

There was a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save her."

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?".

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Twitter Unscheduled Maintenance

Man, I found an email while searching for something else today. An email generated after someone commented on a LiveJournal entry a few years ago. Here goes the post that the person replied to:

Those were the days! Ok, not one of my deepest entries, but man did things just rattle off back then. Why did I stop entering posts into my LJ? Don't know.. I suppose I was just tired of subjecting people to read every blasted thought that had run through my mind that day. Of course kids like me are super transparent these days, with pictures all over facebook and constant status updates -- but the things that end up in Live Journal are deeper than that "I'm so cool check out what I'm doing right now" facade. I think I'm just afraid of what will come out... wait, is this Live Journal?

Facebook support for Twitter - TweetDeck's New Pre-release version 0.24.1

The TweetDeck team has really hit it big with their newest release: Facebook integration. While the social network giants duke it out, people taking Twitter for a test spin no longer have to worry about double-posting to Facebook. It is fully integrated into the newest version of TweetDeck v0.24.1, the Adobe Air-powered desktop application.

The Old Way to link up your Facebook account to Twitter: Twitter has a Facebook Application. You install this to your account, which links your Twitter account up to your Facebook account. What this means is that when you update you Twitter status, your Facebook status gets updated as well. Here's the problem - you cannot choose which Tweets are sent to Facebook; all of them are shot over to Facebook. This makes you seem like a crazy Facebook updater and everything you Tweet probably isn't relevant to the Facebook user audience.

The New Way to link up your Facebook account to Twitter: Get the newest beta version of TweetDeck. While you are writing your tweet, there are two checkboxes to the right. One for Twitter, one for Facebook. You can have one or the other, or both, checked off. This lets you have total control over where your 140 character update will be posted to, all from the same spot, all without having to open your browser, and with the same TwitPic and URL shrinking ease you are used to.

Other things to note: There is also a Facebook column you can enable with the button on the top of TweetDeck, which shows you the latest updates of all your Facebook friends in the same column. Actions on the friend's user thumbnail pic let you email their status update and re-tweet their status. If the user is online, you can click a green status icon next to them and open up Facebook chat, or just view their profile if they aren't online. The column updates itself every 60 seconds.

I'm just a typical Twitter user and even with all of my columns filled up, I barely ever go over the maximum amount of API calls TweetDeck makes to Twitter, and haven't had a problem as of yet, even though this is a beta release. Bravo
