It’s the holiday season and what better time to give thanks to all of our loyal customers, friends, and colleagues than this festive time of year. Facing a far less than ideal year in the residential construction industry, our clients have continued to believe in us, and our employees have persevered. A true team effort has helped East Coast Stairs serve as one of the leading staircase installation companies in Connecticut. We’re thankful for this and would like to extend a warm and grateful holiday wish for everyone visiting our website. We hope you all have a magical holiday season and a prosperous 2010. But, most of all, we wish everyone a safe and healthy 2010!

Another portfolio update – wrought iron baluster staircase

We’re updating our portfolio again this week (and again on page 2) with 4 more pictures of a staircase which was part of a remodeling project.

This update features another L-shape stair with a landing two risers up along with two sections of balcony.

The parts used were: Brazilian cherry treads returned on the right, Brazilian cherry nosings and cove moulding, poplar risers, stringers, and skirt boards, and finally mahogany 9010 rail and 400 series newel posts.

The style of iron balusters chosen were a nice choice to complement the chandelier in the foyer. This staircase also complements the back spiral staircase which can be seen in the first photo creating a unified theme. Great choices in part and materials equals another fantastic looking staircase

Portfolio update – Fan out staircase

We just updated our portfolio (page 2) with 4 new pictures of a fan out staircase with a curved balcony.

The staircase is a L-shape stair with a right fan out. Materials used were poplar: risers, stringers, balusters, skirt boards, and cove moulding; all painted white (by builder’s painter). The treads were of red oak. And the rail was made of mahogany.

The style of parts were as follows: 300 series newel posts, E-186 balusters in 1-3/4″, 9010 rail.

The homeowner added some nice touches with the a runner leading you up the stairs along with a centerpiece table in the corner to accent the space. An elegant colonial style staircase for a beautiful home.

Why do we use Twitter? It first started with us following a few vendors who were posting deals on stair building supplies. We soon found many others in the woodworking and housing industry posting informative news bits and breakthroughs concerning our industry.

Weather and snow throwers

Up here in the Northeast this summer’s been rainier and at times cooler than most would like, especially those in the home building industry who have to work outside. We feel for you! Being somewhat of a weather enthusiast, I could not help but notice that AccuWeather.com is calling for this upcoming winter to be one of the snowiest winters in the last 5 years.Â Their late summer and early winter forecast can be found here. Hearing a forecast this far out cautions us to take it with a grain of salt however judging from last winter, it’s hard to think this winter will be sunny and tropical in Connecticut either.

In the chance that their forecast becomes reality, looking for a snow thrower this time of year could present some nice deal opportunities. For those in the market, we would confidently throw a nod behind Ariens, we have the 722 model.

The many snowstorms last winter gave us plenty of opportunity to try out our the snow thrower and we were pleased with it’s performance. The powdery snow was handled with ease and we were impressed with it’s ability to handle the hard, frozen-over chunks. I suppose for our particular model an automatic would have been nice but even without it, the machine glides smoothly and was not tiring at all. Sure beats shoveling any day!

We purchased ours over at Sudden Service in South Windsor, CT.Â Great, knowledgeable people to deal with.

If the heat avoids this region for the rest summer… I can’t say we’ll be jealous, it’s good weather for working in our opinion. However, like Bastardi asks… is it the result of something that may bring us a cold winter? We’ll be waiting along with you guys to find out!

Feng Shui and your staircase

A growing trend in the area of interior decorating has been Feng Shui, decorating and arranging the interior of your home to be in harmony with nature. However this trend is not new, Feng Shui originated in ancient China and has held it’s influence throughout history. The great American architecturist, Frank Lloyd Wright was noted for practicing Feng Shui in many of his designs.

How can you consider using Feng Shui’s influence around your stair area? Linda Binns, of Harmony Inside & Out,Â offers a detailed video with examples and explanation:

About.com also doesÂ a nice job with discussing a question regarding the relation of a staircase to the doorway of a main entrance and how to go about dealing with any situations that contribute to negative energy: Feng Shui of main entrance.

The combination of these resources should help in integrating Feng Shui around your staircase and into your home. It’s been a surviving concept in design and architecture that can definitely give you great results.

As the title says, we thought it’d be a good idea to supply our visitors with a diagram displaying some of the possibilities you can choose when building your staircase system. Specifics to note would be the difference in “post to post” rail application where the rail connects directly to the side of a newel post and “over the post” applications where the rail remains over the post with the use of fittings such as a cap. The Diagram will also be available in our Stair Parts section of our menu along with additional information to be posted soon. Questions? Contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss your stair project.

Welcome to our new website!

Hello and welcome to our shiny new website. We are quite excited for you to see the new features we’ve added. Our new gallery should aid builders and homeowners in reviewing our stair product styles and making selections. As you can see we’re starting a blog in which we will aim to provide resourceful articles about our products, news in our industry, and other fun happenings from our company. We’re becoming a bit more social by joining networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. It’s great to connect with our past clients as well as other people in our industry. If you’re on those networks as well we’d be happy to connect with you. As always we’re here to answer any questions you may have with your staircase project. There’s been some complex projects going on as of late and we’re happy to put our knowledge and experience to use!

We would also like to invite our clients whom we’ve completed work for to send photos of your new staircase once painted, finished, and decorated. We’d love to either post them in our portfolio or blog.
