saltbox

The 1,064-square-foot, kitchen-less house, a wood-framed "saltbox" originally built in 1737 in Shrewsbury, Mass., was meticulously disassembled...

Saltbox houses are two stories tall in the front and one in back. They're supposed to resemble old-fashioned wooden saltboxes, which were hung by the fire to keep the salt dry. Saltbox houses were also called "outshot" houses.

New York City hospitals are bracing for a 10 to 30 percent increase in births in late July/early August, nine months after Hurricane Sandy left much of the city without electricity for several days. “This is just old basic physiology,’’ said Dr. Jacques Moritz, director of gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. “There’s no Internet and no cable. The Young Professionals Campaign is helping Rotary clubs and districts learn the best practices for engaging younger members and sharing Rotary’s message with a broader audience. The campaign encourages Rotary clubs to build relationships by inviting young professionals to a community service or networking event rather than a weekly meeting.

Districts 5950 (Minnesota, USA) and 5960 (parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin) hosted an event, promoted through social media, at which volunteers stuffed 500 backpacks with school supplies for two local youth groups. Afterward, the volunteers — young professionals with no previous connection to Rotary — socialized with Rotarians over food and drinks.

Two Florida women ended up in a jail thanks to a “bucket list” that included stealing from a store. Police said that Andrea Mobley, 36, and Jennifer Denise Morrow, 38, were arrested after they tried to leave a Walmart with several unpaid items—including beef jerky and a bathing suit. Morrow told cops the mini crime spree was part of a “bucket list” of activities they wanted to complete before they died. “We were two stupid women doing something we never did before,” said Mobley.

In a study of 1,865 people, Brown University researchers found that those who reported having frequent heartburn proved far more likely to have developed throat or vocal-cord cancer than those who didn’t. With 90 years of emergency-response experience, Save the Children (SaveTheChildren.org) has learned that children are always the most vulnerable victims of any crisis. When disasters strike—whether the 2011 Japanese tsunami; the Newtown, Conn., shooting tragedy; or last month’s tornado in Oklahoma—STC works to meet the immediate and long-term needs of children and their families. In addition to standard disaster aid, STC runs support programs and refers traumatized children to trained caseworkers for counseling. In Moore, Okla., where a massive tornado leveled two schools, STC set up child-friendly play spaces in evacuation shelters. It’s now working to reopen 12 child-care centers damaged by the storm so that parents can get back to work and restore normalcy for their kids.

The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
