So we’ve finally arrived at Renoise 3.5, by far the most substantial update since 3.0. Not just when it comes to the power of the new features, but also the sheer number of upgrades and improvements: Release Notes & Changelog.

Mick’s DOOM sound is sadly missing from the new game, so I went back to his old GDC talk and tried to create it (in spirit, as you’ll see) using the info he gave us. Renoise Is Doomed (xrns download).

When you understand how features work and how they can be connected together, you can create something entirely new. This is possible throughout Renoise, and ‘Building An Effects Stepper’ is one example. This video stands apart from all the others that came before. So after the intro it shifts into ‘unscripted mode’, where I talk about building something new in a (hopefully) appropriate manner.

Adding modulation to samples greatly expands the possibilities of their sound beyond the original audio. If you’re unfamiliar with the Modulation section, this video shows the basics of constructing envelopes, using presets and Sets.

I figured out a way to work around using the LFO so that the Effect Stepper does not have its previous limitation. There’s also a way to replace the Formula with an ‘LFO-Stepper’, though this method is still limited.

In an instrument when you assign a sample to a Modulation Set and an FX Chain, normally you’re stuck with the choice you’ve made. However, by employing a bit of ingenuity, there’s a couple of ways around this.
