Consolidate High Interest Debt

How low can your interest rate go? The answer may lie in a Home Equity Loan or Line of Credit from Eli Lilly Federal Credit Union.

How low can your interest rate go? The answer may lie in a Home Equity Loan or Line of Credit from Eli Lilly Federal Credit Union.

Interest rates for our home equity products are among the lowest we offer. Consider this option to consolidate your higher interest credit card balances and loans from other banks or credit unions. Or if your debt is in good order, use your equity to satisfy your current priorities such as home improvements, a vacation, or a major purchase.

Good Reasons to Use Your Equity
Using your equity responsibly can be financially rewarding. Specifically, ELFCU’s Home Equity Line of Credit offers flexibility of funds and many other benefits:

No Fees: No application fees, no annual fee, and low closing costs.

Low Rates: As low as 3.75% APR* = an affordable way to borrow money.

Possible Tax Benefits**: The interest you pay could be tax-deductible.

To explore a Home Equity Loan or Line of Credit, call 317.524.5010 or apply now!

Experienced mortgage team to guide you through the process step by step

Realtor Rebates – a benefit that leads to 20% cash back on the sales commission your real estate agent earns.

Thanks to programs like this one, credit unions are gaining market share in the mortgage business. Check out “Consider a Credit Union Home Loan” recently posted at NASDAQ.com.

A major banking corporation proudly advertises a network of 16,000 ATMs nationwide. But wait. We've got 60,000+. Now, where would you rather have your checking account?

At ELFCU, we believe in providing members with ultimate convenience, beginning with 60,000+ surcharge-free ATMS and 4,000+ shared branches nationwide and beyond. Look for ATMs that are part of the Allpoint, CO-OP Network, or Alliance One fleets. Search for them now.

Allpoint, one of our preferred nationwide networks, offers surcharge-free machines in many Target, Costco, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, and CVS stores. So you don't have to go out of your way for your cash.

We also offer 24/7 transactions through eBranch here at elfcu.org and our Member Contact Center at 800.621.2105 – simply choose the 24-hour member service option.

Where should you keep your cash? A ThinkBIG Checking Account with an ELFCU VISA debit card will earn you 4.0%* APY on your balance, up to $1,000, and 0.25% APY on balances greater than $1,000. (Average daily balance of $50 required to earn dividend.) It's fee-free if you enroll for electronic statements. ($4 monthly maintenance fee applies without eStatements.) With a premium dividend bearing account available to you, there’s no reason to look any farther than ELFCU for smart checking.

Apply now, visit a branch or call our Member Contact Center to open your new ThinkBIG Checking Account with its countless access privileges.

*Annual Percentage Yield as of 10/24/11. The rate is variable and may change after the account is opened.

As the holiday season approaches, it is important to be aware of potential scams. Con artists are working hard to get their hands on other people’s money as well as personal and financial information. To help reduce the risk and protect our members, we’re offering a list of potential scams along with tips for a safer and smarter holiday shopping season.

Many consumers will be using their mobile devices and computers to conduct their holiday shopping and so will the cyber scammers. Mobile device scams are a top threat this year based on the increase in mobile malware and malicious apps. Consumers should be aware of all potential threats in order to safeguard their funds and personal information this holiday season.

Holiday Scams and Tips

• Watch for mobile malware, especially deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

• Be cautious when looking for free mobile apps; may be an attempt to steal information.

• Watch for malicious screensavers, ring tones and e-cards.

• Watch for purchase offers of fake anti-virus software; this scam may trick you into purchasing the software.

• Secure your computer. At a minimum, have anti-virus, anti-spyware and a firewall.

• Remember to turn off your computer when you’re done shopping.

• Watch for social media scams: phony Facebook and Twitter sites or other online promotions and contests.

• Beware of scammers advertising popular holiday items.

• Check out the seller of items; research before you buy.

• Online coupon scams may ask for your personal or financial information using email.

• Holiday phishing scams: don’t fall for emails, text messages or phone calls asking for personal or financial information.

• Monitor credit, debit and account numbers used for your holiday shopping to help identify any unauthorized usage.

• Vacation scams: don’t post holiday pictures until you are back home.

• Use only well-lit parking lots and survey the parking lot surroundings. Make sure you have your car keys in your hands before exiting a store and heading to your car.

• If an offer or item sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.

Report scams you encounter to the Federal Trade Commission: http://www.ftc.gov or call toll-free 877.ftc.help (877.382.4357).

NACHA is the industry trade association that manages the development, administration, and governance of the ACH Network, the backbone for the electronic movement of money and data. This particular scam attempts to upload malicious software to a computer.

NACHA does not send communications to persons or organizations about individual ACH transactions that they originate or receive. NACHA itself does not process nor touch the ACH transactions that flow to and from organizations and financial institutions.

These fraudulent messages are occurring with greater frequency and increased sophistication, and perpetrators are conducting similar phishing attacks in which they are sending emails that claim to be from the Federal Reserve Bank, IRS, other federal agencies, as well as commercial financial institutions, other payment organizations, technology companies, and businesses.

Members should not click on any links or open any attachments in an email of this type. Members should forward any suspected fraudulent email carrying the NACHA name to abuse@nacha.org and then delete the email.

Specifically, the email claims to be from the Federal Reserve Wire Network and appears to be sent from "alert@federalreserve.gov." Please see an example of the email below:

Be aware that phishing messages frequently contain attachments and/or links to web pages that host malicious code and software. Do not open attachments or follow links within unsolicited emails from unknown parties or from parties with whom you do not normally communicate.
Mortgage Rates Drop to All-Time Lows

Don’t miss this window to lower your monthly mortgage payment or to affordably shorten the term of your mortgage.

Don’t miss this window to lower your monthly mortgage payment or to affordably shorten the term of your mortgage.

ELFCU continues to offer competitive mortgage rates on traditional 30-year mortgages as well as shorter terms. With the drop in rates this fall, terms less than 30 years are growing in popularity.

Mint.com’s Comparing the 15-year and 30-year Mortgage outlines the advantages of a 15-year term.

Securing a lower rate, paying less interest over time, and building more equity may translate to the right mortgage formula for you. Consider these benefits especially when combined with support from the experienced mortgage team at ELFCU. They will walk you through the refinance process step-by-step.

Call the Mortgage Hotline as your first step: 800.561.9433 or apply now!

No Need to Delay Estate Planning

The percentage of Americans who have estate planning documents such as wills, trusts or power of attorney dropped to 51% in 2009 from 64% in 2007. People are more concerned with immediate needs than planning for the future.

The percentage of Americans who have estate planning documents such as wills, trusts or power of attorney dropped to 51% in 2009 from 64% in 2007. The survey from Lawyers.com cites the economic downturn as a possible reason for the decline. People are more concerned with immediate needs than planning for the future.

At the credit union, we believe in Smart Money decisions and solutions. If you’ve delayed creating or updating your own will or trust due to the costs associated with professional estate planning services, you may want to reconsider with help from ELFCU. Ask us about EZ Estates, a simple way to acquire an estate plan with both the funds and advice you need:

An affordably-priced EZ Line of Credit with a current rate as low as 11.74% APR*, much lower than many credit cards on the market; credit limits available from $500 to $5,000, giving you enough to cover the cost of most estate plans; manageable monthly payments with a .25% rate discount for automating them.

Your choice of professional legal services between two preferred providers, each offering a complimentary initial consultation and educational seminars for credit union members.

There’s no need to delay estate planning further. With EZ Estates, the time to acquire peace of mind is now.

Visit your branch or call 800.621.2105 for details.

See elfcu.org for Estate Planning seminar dates in October.

*Annual Percentage Rate on the EZ Loan is a variable interest rate set at the discretion of the credit union and can change after the loan is made. The APR will never be greater than 18% or the maximum rate allowed by law, whichever is less.

The entire staff of ELFCU Wealth Management recently attended focus11, a leading financial services industry conference hosted by LPL Financial, the nation’s number one independent broker-dealer.*

Held in Chicago, August 7–10, focus11 was one of the industry’s largest gatherings of independent financial advisors, and remains one of the industry’s premier sales and education event. Approximately 5,000 attendees from around the country assembled for the opportunity to learn new strategies and skills, expand knowledge in numerous product areas and network with peers and industry experts. They also heard from influential speakers who addressed current events and financial industry trends. The speakers included Condoleezza Rice, 66th United States Secretary of State; Michael Eisner, former CEO of The Walt Disney Company; and Sir Ken Robinson, author of Out of Our Minds.

Additionally, through the hundreds of business sessions, technology training sessions and continuing education classes at this event, LPL Financial advisors gained valuable knowledge to help them continually improve the service they offer to the customers and members they serve.

Bill Dwyer, president of National Sales and Marketing for LPL Financial, noted that the conference’s theme, A Focus on the Future, speaks to the current economic outlook and its opportunities and challenges for advisors and their clients: “Our enduring mission at LPL Financial is to support our independent advisors as they help their clients reach their life goals. We believe our ability to enable the delivery of objective and conflict-free advice through trusted local advisors is critical in this ongoing effort.”

Unlike many brokerage firms, LPL Financial does not develop its own proprietary investment products, so the unbiased advice given by its advisors is based solely on individual client needs.

About LPL Financial

Mortgage Interest Rates Drop

First mortgage interest rates have taken a plunge recently, dropping close to the near record lows from last October. Lower rates as well as the option to shorten your loan term are good reasons to consider a refinance at this time.

First mortgage interest rates have taken a plunge recently, dropping close to the near record lows from last October. As Mortgage News Daily states, “Consumers are looking to seize the opportunity. There's always a rush by consumers and loan agents to lock rates on dips, and that practice is all the more prevalent when extreme daily rate swings raise the sense of urgency.”

Along with lower rates, many homeowners are seeking a shorter term than the traditional 30-year mortgage. According to Freddie Mac, of the homeowners who refinanced a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in Q2 of this year, 37% chose a 15- or 20-year fixed-rate mortgage. This marks the highest volume of refinances at these terms since Q3 2003.

As a result of the strong current interest in refinancing, ELFCU has experienced higher than normal call volume to our mortgage division. If you’re attempting to reach the credit union regarding a mortgage, please be aware that all calls to the ELFCU Mortgage Hotline, 800.561.9433, will be returned within 24 business hours.

Meanwhile, to learn how to maximize the benefits of refinancing, explore “Refi Roadmap: A Locked Rate Isn't a Closed Loan” from Mortgage News Daily.

Enhancing Your eBranch

We’ve been busy at ELFCU creating an online banking experience that includes faster, easier and more direct bill payments. Check out four new enhancements within eBranch at elfcu.org now.

We’ve been busy at ELFCU creating an online banking experience that includes faster, easier and more direct bill payments. Check out these four new enhancements within eBranch at elfcu.org now:

Same Day/Next Day Bill Pay

Avoid late payments, late fees, and possible service interruptions with two new expedited bill pay features. Same Day Bill Pay is for merchants who accept electronic payments and carries a $10 fee per payment. Next Day Bill Pay is for merchants who accept only check payments and carries a $15 fee per payment. eBranch will guide you regarding which options are available by merchant.

Account-to-Account Transfers (A2A)

To move money from one U.S. financial institution to another, Account-to-Account Transfers can be established on a one-time or recurring basis. It’s a free online service. To access our A2A feature, click ‘Transfer Money’ within the Bill Pay menu.

NOTE: ELFCU has offered this service previously through another payment processing vendor. We are asking all current users of A2A to transition their non-ELFCU account information to the link within Bill Pay and begin using our new service going forward. ELFCU will disable our original A2A offering and remove the link from the ‘Transfers’ tab inside eBranch on October 31, 2011. Thank you for your understanding as we transition to our new, faster, A2A service.

Person-to-Person Payments (P2P)

Now you can pay people electronically. With Person-to-Person Payments, you can transfer funds to anyone with a valid email address or mobile phone number and a US bank or credit union account. It’s also free! Pay the babysitter without running to the ATM. To access, click on ‘Pay People’ within the Bill Pay menu.

More to come in 2011!

Keep watching for announcements and details about further enhancements to eBranch, including personal financial management tools coming later this fall. Mobile Banking is also on the horizon at ELFCU, which will make your smartphone an access point to your smart money.

Restrictions may apply with all the new enhancements, including daily cut-off times; limits on weekly transfer or payment amounts; and general availability based on member status.

Market Update from ELFCU Wealth: Weathering the Volatility

The first few days of August for the stock market have represented a rapid flight from risk. Read ELFCU Wealth's commentary on the current volatility.

The first few days of August for the stock market have represented a rapid flight from risk. The third-quarter bounce for the economy, driven by the tight consensus of investors three weeks ago, has now been completely rejected by the capital markets which have turned lower, despite the fact that earnings remain robust for Corporate America. The market has also ignored several recent, solid assessments of the economy, especially the recently released employment report, which showed a welcomed gain of 154,000 jobs being created in the private sector for July. The uncertainty of the European debt crisis and intense debate on the U.S. debt ceiling precludes any material hope of fiscal or monetary stimulus before the next election. This lack of policy actions has increased the perceived risk in the markets that is causing investors to flee. In a sense, “all news has been bad news” as of late.

Downgrade Commentary from ELFCU Wealth

After the market close on Friday, Standard and Poor’s (S&P)—one of the three major U.S. rating agencies—downgraded the U.S. government debt from AAA to AA+. Read ELFCU Wealth's commentary regarding the downgrade.

After the market close on Friday, Standard and Poor’s (S&P)—one of the three major U.S. rating agencies—downgraded the U.S. government debt from AAA to AA+. This is actually a drop of less than one level within the S&P rating system. According to S&P, an obligor rated AAA has “extremely strong capacity to meet its financial commitments” while one of AA has “very strong capacity to meet its financial commitments” and differs from AAA obligors “only to a small degree.” Therefore, U.S. debt is still rated very strong. In addition, the two other major U.S. rating agencies, Moody’s and Fitch, have maintained their highest ratings for U.S. federal debt. S&P kept the short-term rating of the United States at the top rating of A1+. Short-term money market instruments are rated on a different scale, but the status quo with respect to these ratings implies no impact to money market funds.

Credit Unions Pledge $1 Billion to Higher Education Financing Solutions

In the face of heated debt-ceiling and deficit negotiations in Washington, nearly 200 credit union partners of Credit Union Student Choice, including your own credit union, have underscored their commitment to students, families, and colleges by collectively pledging $1 billion to higher education financing solutions.

In the face of heated debt-ceiling and deficit negotiations in Washington, nearly 200 credit union partners of Credit Union Student Choice, including your own credit union, have underscored their commitment to students, families, and colleges by collectively pledging $1 billion to higher education financing solutions.

According to Jon Jeffreys, President of Credit Union Student Choice, this historic pledge comes at a critically important time for higher education. While students busily prepare for Fall semester classes and finalize their funding needs, Congress is engaged in fierce negotiations over the Federal budget—an impasse that could significantly impact the flow of educational funds, such as Pell Grants, to students, colleges, and universities.

“Our credit union partners have stated loud and clear that they support students and families, and in turn, the colleges and universities that are the bedrock of many communities,” said Jeffreys. “While it’s imperative that students first maximize scholarships, grants, and Federal Stafford loans, this pledge reaffirms our credit union partners’ commitment to providing fair-value private student lending solutions. This is especially important in light of the ongoing budget negotiations, which could potentially result in delayed or reduced funding of key programs.”

With education costs continuing to rise, millions of students rely on loans to pay for college. Jeffreys points out that while Federal student loans provide the best financing option, many students also rely on private student loans to fill funding gaps. The nationwide Student Choice network enables its 200 credit union partners to provide school‐certified private education loans to students in need of additional financing options, while also providing key information to help families make responsible decisions on the best ways to pay for college.

“We’re proud to take part in this commitment to support the families, schools and communities we serve,” said Rick Thornburg, SVP of Lending at Eli Lilly Federal Credit Union. “Credit unions have a unique opportunity and ability to make a real difference in the lives of our members. By joining with credit unions nationwide, we support this collaborative pledge to higher education.”

If you’d like advice regarding your private student loan options at this time, contact your student lending experts at ELFCU: 317.524.5168.
