"Bank On" Programs Garnering National Momentum and Attention

Your credit union has joined forces with the City of Indianapolis and a consortium of credit unions and banks in a program called Bank on Indy. This program is one of 60 nationwide intended to steer low-income people away from check cashers and payday lenders toward traditional financial institutions. National publications such as USA Today have recently recognized this effort.

On September 30 and October 1, a team of credit union employees visited ImClone's offices in New York and New Jersey to conduct informational presentations. The response was overwhelming. Hundreds of people - about half the employee base at these locations - have joined or expressed an interest in joining.

Legislation passed by the House and now working its way through the Senate will require that federal loans no longer originate with private financial institutions. Parents and students will still receive their federal student loans, but not through private lenders. The credit union, however, will continue to offer alternative student lending options.
