Penn Olson: 5 Common Mistakes When Measuring Social Media ROI

I’m not sure it’s really ROI, Sarah’s talking about, but she’s got a great post that talks about common misconceptions about return on social media efforts. I love the one about not counting clicks. You can really see that people/companies are starting to believe that followers = interest. They don’t. Being both a follower and an ignorer, I can tell you that most entities I follow don’t often see my click through traffic. So, are they effectively reaching me to drive me to their products and services? Probably not.

Study Shows Rapid Adoption of Social Media on Intranets

Via Bill Ives on the FASTForward Blog, there is a new study that shows that companies are rapidly adopting Social Media on their Intranets. Bill has a great summary of the key metrics. The study makes some interesting observations – not only about the most popular types of social media (wikis and blogs), but also about budgets and executive support and adoption.

I think it’s clear that while the train has left the station on Enterprise 2.0, there’s much work to be done. Companies are still at the beginning of the adoption curve, and there’s much work to be done to integrate these new types of media and technologies into the corporate information fabric.

This seems like a really great idea to show a more complete view of the conversation happening around your content. I can imagine how valuable this would be in certain situations where you were trying to track the buzz around your product or perhaps monitoring your reputation.

Microsoft Popfly Shutting Down

Microsoft announced last week that it will be shutting down its Popfly mashup service in August. Popfly was originally designed to be a mashup engine with a visual editing interface. At some point, Microsoft added support for building online games. It seemed to me that there was some searching for a sweet spot and it never really came together.

One of the coolest things about Popfly was its visual interface for building mashups. Components appeared as cubes that could be wired together to perform operations on data. Users could build their own components. Unfortunately, the way you built components was with Visual Studio which dramatically increases the barrier to entry.

Amazon's had a virtual job fair on their Second Life island on Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Pretty interesting and sorry I missed it. I was thinking it would be fun to wander in and see what that looked like.
I'm not sure how valuable searching Twitter content will be. It seems to me that the value is in the stream and immediacy of the data.
Google Adds Social Aspects to Google Apps

For users to Google Apps, Google has added the ability to see all the contacts for their company when using Gmail. I'm not entirely sure how this is social as much as working more like other corporate email solutions.
Very nice wiki for an enterprise. Has a connector into SharePoint that is supposed to allow you to draft content in Socialtext and then publish the final version as a MS Word document into SharePoint. You can also link to content in SharePoint from Socialtext. Can take advantage single-sign on between SharePoint and Socialtext via Active Directory integration.

I've started reading Programming Collective Intelligence, and I'm really enjoying it. It's a really well written book that gives you a good introduction to the emerging field of Collective Intelligence. Segaran does a great job of taking the theory and mathematics and applying them in practical ways to real world problems.

The examples in the book are written in Python. I'd love to have the time to play with rebuilding them in Smalltalk or Common Lisp. However, I barely have time to even read the book. So, it's back to Python for me for a while. (Just between you and me, it's making me giddy to get back to Python, Emacs, and the down and dirty hacking that I used to love.)

So, if you're interested in Web 2.0, the modern application of Artificial Intelligence techniques, or doing really cool things with Python then you should grab a copy of this book.
