In technical terms, typography is the art of arranging font type into the layout of the design. This arrangement includes the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing and the adjustment of spaces between groups of letters and between the letters of a word, all together constituting typography.

What is Typography?

To explain the phenomena of typography, it can be said that it is basically the order of shaping written information. Typography can be applied to anything which has to do with text, including captions/headings, names, web design or any kind of written information. For instance, authors or writers write the text of their books, designers or typographers manage the typography and the end readers read through it.

Going deep into its etymology, the word Typography comes from the Greek origin words typos, which means “mark, figure” and grapho, which means “to write.” So as a compound word, typography means to write in a specific mark or style, and that is pretty much self explanatory for typography’s true meanings.

Significance of Typography in Graphic Designing

Significance of typography is unrivaled when it comes to graphic designing. Typography is a particular design element without which every design seems incomplete. There is no rocket science involved in it, for which we need to follow a set pattern of rules and regulations. It won’t be unjust to confess that typography plays a major role in making any graphic design an instant success. An Important Example – Effects of Bad Typography

Most people I have seen belonging to the media and communication industry largely undermine the importance of typography. For such people, typefaces are pretty insignificant. However, to the true devotees of typo, they are the most important feature of text, giving subliminal messages that can either tempt or revolt the readers.

An example of how a bad typography can effect the onlookers is when Avatar, the biggest grossing movie of the year 2009 was released, a particular section of the audience was immediately outraged, and those were the graphic designers. Reason being, they didn’t like the font that James Cameron had chosen for the subtitles. There were several angry views about the bad typography used in Avatar such as:

One blogger commented “I hated it on the posters and then threw up a little in my mouth when I realized I would have to read that ugly font throughout the film in the subtitles,” Another said, “After the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on CG effects, did he just run out of money for a decent graphic designer!?!?”

This example is fair enough to make you realize that the fonts and particularly good type fonts are not just for designing geeks. Any medium of communication need a good typography for its success.

After the image, the shape of the logo counts a lot. The shape either has to correlate with either the name, the graphical image or should be relevant to your business. Also, the shape of your log should be a combination of a relation to your business and something that people will remember. For instance, a logo shape of an eyeglass retailer can be an eyeglass case that is open with the eyeglass inside. This is a colorful world and so colors play an important role on catching the eyes of viewers. The color of your business’s logo has to be catchy. There are so many colors in the palette, likewise there are so many businesses in the world that each has already used many colors many times. So finding the color for your logo can be hard at times to separate yourself from the competition (or other businesses) that may have a similar logo.

Do some research about the meanings behind the colors you want to use or brainstorm, as on which color will suit your business the best or do a survey by making different color options of your logo. Art and designing is all about getting inspired by the element of universe and beautifully putting them in graphical representation. To be inspired by another designer’s art work is very natural and positive. Every designer feels the need to try something new that will take his graphic-making skills to a new level and its inspiration can come when either they see a catchy design or want to become as skilled as their fellow designer.

However, in this course of aspiration one should realize that there is a very fine line between design inspiration and design replication! To discuss it in detail let me define both the phenomenon respectively. INSPIRATION is a source or action causing the spirit to do something by a heavenly influence.

REPLICATION, on the other hand, is the unauthorized use or imitation of thoughts or creation of another individual’s original work. As an Indian advertisement designer puts it “Inspiration is a much longer route, in which anything that strikes you is evolved into a completely different product through a combination of factors that include research, your own style and sensibilities, and a conscious effort to be different and not appear as a mere clone.”

The blessed human mind absorbs what it sees and experiences and consequently gets influenced by it. If I see an impressive design work, I can’t help but be inspired by it, one way or the other. Similar happens with our designer friends that they see someone’s work and it strikes their heart like no other.

Sometimes this inspiration happens consciously; however, sometimes it gets inspired in their subconscious. Ideas are constantly absorbed, regurgitated and recycled in our mind factory. Often the result is sufficiently abstracted from the original idea to call it inspiration; sometimes the result is a exact copy of the original idea.

Personally, I think every other designer is guilty of some kind of replication, even if it occurs in the subconscious. But this statement of mine does not give liberty to the all the designers out there that they can easily replicate somebody’s design and then put the blame on their unconscious. Originality has its own value, which is no matched with plagiarism or replication (no matter how well it is done).

In short, replication or copying is a dirty shortcut, which does not lead you anywhere, but dullness of mind-power and sometimes embarrassment. On the other hand, inspiration has no short cuts; it just needs to be worked on!

Creativity is the most important tool for every designer; technology can’t replace it and as a personal opinion it won’t replace it until the end of days. I saw a lot of great works done in earlier version of Photoshop which still impress the users of the latest version of this program (CS5,unfortunately I am not a user of this “wow” version).

Here I present a list of some tips to increase your creativity; these work for me and I noticed from various forums and blogs of the world-wide designers that these tips also work for them.

Please write your impressions in a comment so that I discover what the best tips are, and maybe I will republish this article as being better informed than now.

Do not worry, these tips work for 90% of all people, only few of us are special and have different opinions. I hope to aid you in your process of creation and let me know how much I helped you.

1. Usually, creativity comes after many hours of work.

Probably, all my articles about freelancing on the Internet seem to contain the same messages, only work improves your skills.

In design as well as in science there is no wonder, all what matter is the number of hours of work and how passionate you are in making your projects.

The difference between a very creative designer and one that suffer a lack of it in accomplishing a task is, most of the time the fact that the first one worked on a previous similar project. In conclusion…creativity likes experience & work.

2. When you are thinking about a concept it means that you are working

In my career as a freelancer it happens very often that it can take up to several minutes to imagine a sketch of a design, staying as focused as possible, sometimes even with my eyes closed. My brother told me once that a better place to boost my creativity in this way is… a bed.

I on the other hand believe that it is much better to stay quite some time (or to lose time how my brother likes to say) concentrated on creating an initial concept than hurrying up to draw as many sketches as you can, but without them being interesting. I really believe this: when somebody is thinking on how to create something shows a hard work not a pretext for lazy people.

The entire world is governed by the law of Murphy and not by the physics (good for Einstein that can’t read this article!) and of course when you didn’t expect the solution, it will hit you. A general rule that doesn’t sound too professional, but is indeed very true: the best concept comes after you have chosen one as the best one.

3. Be very relaxed when you are working

I know that it is almost impossible to be calm when you need some whole days to fulfill your schedule for today (sincerely not all the time I respect this tip).

Anyway my effective power is superior when I am very unstrained and I listen to my favorite music (some psychologist consider that the symphonic music is better, but I believe it is more important to like what you are listening to, please let me know your opinion).

4. Creativity increases from multiple opinions

I learned a lot by demanding the opinions of all my friends regarding my works, even if they have experience with design or not. Feedback helps you a lot, because you can see the drawing from multiple perspectives.

The best example is a recent concept of a logo designed by me for a friend: it wasn’t a very serious task…in fact it was an avatar for the Yahoo Messenger. I initially, in the picture bellow, imagined 2”D” and from this sketch I start adding color, making some small corrections and so on.

It was a big surprise when he told me that he sees it as being 2”P” in the image; obviously both of us are right, but I should have seen the different aspects as the creator of the logo. From this experience I learned that paying attention to different opinions can boost the creativity, because you have access to multiple points of view.

5. Take breaks

If you are very tired and bored, yet still stay in front of your PC then this is a loss of time (I hate this situation). A break sounds as an excuse, but you should organize your schedule very well and you must keep in mind that having a break is a ‘must’ in boosting your efficiency, not something that is optional.

It is scientific demonstrated that small pauses are very good in the process of creation (these help the brain to “respire”, even the best processor can’t work with 100% of its capability without some breaks).

6. Read blogs and study portfolios as much as you can

Logo that can be seen as 2”D”s, but also 2”P”s.

I see a very clear connection between information and creativity. A good searcher on Internet surely will find good sources for inspiration and this is the fuel for creativity.

Nobody can only work; a pause can be a very good solution to escape from a bad state. I usually, after approximately two hours of continuum work, spend around half an hour looking at the new post on various blogs of the great designers.

7. Pay attention to the psychologist pieces of advice

Psychology studies the way of improving creativity, and of course this science can give you better advices than me. A very important piece of advice that really has a positive effect on me is to change the design of my office; this helps me a lot to fight against boredom.

I can’t afford to change every day the furniture in my study room around, but small changes can be easily made as a new keyboard, a very nice wireless mouse, wallpaper of the PC (some operating systems permit to change the desktop wallpaper at every minute-I have multiple collection of impressive backgrounds that give me a good disposition every time).

Finally, I want to repeat that everything depends on your own way of working and thinking; all my advices are based on the opinion of the majority of the designers.

The FIFA World Cup, also called the Football World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the men’s national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of World War II.

The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).

During the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title. Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. Italy, the current champions, have won four titles, and Germany are next with three titles. The other former champions are Uruguay, winners of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each.

The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany. The next World Cup will be held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.

1930 Uruguay

The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the inaugural edition of the world championship for international association football teams – the FIFA World Cup. It was played in Uruguay from 13 July to 30 July. Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) selected Uruguay as host nation as the country would be celebrating the centenary of its independence, and the Uruguay national football team had successfully retained their football title at the 1928 Summer Olympics. All matches were played in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, the majority at the Estadio Centenario, which was built for the tournament.

Thirteen teams, seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America entered the tournament. Few European teams chose to participate due to the duration and cost of travel. The teams were divided into four groups, with the winner of each group progressing to the semi-finals. The first two World Cup matches took place simultaneously, and were won by France and the USA, who defeated Mexico 4–1 and Belgium 3–0, respectively. Lucien Laurent of France scored the first goal in World Cup history.

Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Yugoslavia each won their respective groups to qualify for the semi-finals. In the final, hosts and pre-tournament favourites Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people, and became the first nation to win a World Cup.

Statistics

Although, unlike in subsequent World Cups, there had been no qualifying competition, one principle was established for the future: the groups were divided so as to try and achieve as much geographical diversity as possible. The groups were:

Italy 1934

The 1934 FIFA World Cup, or the World’s Cup as it was known then, was the second football World Cup staged, and hosted by Italy from 27 May to 10 June. Italy was chosen as hosts by FIFA at the Stockholm congress of October 1932. It was the first World Cup for which teams would have to qualify in order to take part. 32 nations entered the competition, and after qualification, 16 teams participated in the finals tournament. Italy became the second World Cup champions, beating Czechoslovakia in the final, 2–1.

Brazil 1950

The 1950 FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil from 24 June to 16 July, was the fourth FIFA World Cup, and the first staged in 12 years due to World War II. Brazil was chosen as the host country by FIFA in July 1946. It was also the first tournament that the trophy itself would be referred to as the Jules Rimet Cup, to mark the 25th anniversary of Rimet’s presidency of FIFA. It was won by Uruguay, who had won the inaugural competition in 1930, clinching the cup by beating the hosts Brazil 2–1 in the deciding match of the four-team final group (this was the only tournament not decided by a one-match final).

Switzerland 1954

The 1954 FIFA World Cup, the fifth staging of the World Cup, was held in Switzerland from 16 June to 4 July. As the year saw the 50th anniversary of FIFA, it was appropriate for football’s premier competition to be played in the home of its governing body, and Switzerland was chosen as hosts in July 1946. The tournament still remains as the highest average of goals per game. The tournament was won by West Germany, who defeated Hungary 3–2 in the final, giving them their first title.

Mexico 1970

The 1970 FIFA World Cup, the ninth staging of the World Cup, was held in Mexico, from 31 May to 21 June. Mexico was chosen as the host nation by FIFA in October 1964. The 1970 tournament was the first World Cup hosted in North America, and the first held outside South America and Europe. In a match-up of two-time World Cup champions, the final was won by Brazil, who beat Italy 4–1. With their third World Cup triumph, Brazil were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently.

The Brazilian team, featuring the likes of Pelé (who was in his fourth and final World Cup), Carlos Alberto, Clodoaldo, Gérson, Jairzinho, Rivelino, and Tostão, is usually regarded as the greatest attacking World Cup team ever. They won all of their 6 games on the way to the title, and had also won all of their 6 qualifying games on their way to Mexico. This tournament saw the return of free-flowing, attacking play after the physical battles of 1962 and 1966, and is still considered by many fans to be the finest World Cup in history.

Germany 1974

The 1974 FIFA World Cup, the tenth staging of the World Cup, was held in West Germany from 13 June to 7 July. West Germany had been chosen in July 1966 as hosts by FIFA. The tournament marked the first time that the current trophy, the FIFA World Cup Trophy, created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, was awarded. The previous trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, was won for the third time by Brazil in 1970 and awarded permanently to the Brazilians. The host nation won the title beating the Netherlands in the final, 2–1. The victory was the second for West Germany, who had won in 1954.

The 1978 FIFA World Cup, the 11th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in Argentina between 1 June and 25 June. Argentina was chosen as hosts by FIFA in July 1966. The 1978 World Cup was won by Argentina who beat the Netherlands 3–1 after extra time in the final. Mexico 1986

The 1986 FIFA World Cup, the 13th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June.

Colombia had been originally chosen to host the competition by FIFA but, largely due to economic reasons, was not able to host the competition and officially resigned in 1982. Mexico was selected as the new host in May 1983. The tournament was the second to feature a 24-team format, although unlike the previous edition in 1982, the second round of the tournament was played on a knock-out basis rather than groups. It was won by Argentina (second title after 1978), who beat West Germany 3–2 in the final at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca.

Italy 1990

The 1990 FIFA World Cup was the 14th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football world championship tournament. It was held from 8 June to 8 July 1990 in Italy, the second country to host the event twice. Teams representing 116 national football associations from all six populated continents entered the competition, with its qualification process beginning in April 1988. Twenty-two teams qualified from this process, along with host nation Italy and holders Argentina, for the finals tournament.

The 1990 World Cup is widely regarded as one of the poorest World Cups ever. It generated a record low goals-per-game average and a then-record 16 red cards were handed out, including the first ever dismissal in a final.

Despite the low goalscoring, the 1990 World Cup stands as one of the most watched events in television history, garnering an estimated 26.69 billion non-unique viewers, compiled over the course of the tournament. The 1994 FIFA World Cup, the 15th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in the United States from June 17 to July 17 1994. The United States was chosen as hosts by FIFA on 4 July 1988. Brazil became the first nation to win four World Cup titles when they beat Italy 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the game ended 0-0 after extra-time, the first World Cup final to be decided on penalties.

Average attendance was nearly 69,000, which broke records that had stood since 1950, due to the bigger capacities of the American stadiums compared to those of Europe and Latin America. The total attendance for the final tournament of nearly 3.6 million remains the highest in World Cup history, despite the expansion of the competition from 24 to 32 teams (and from 52 to 64 matches) in 1998. It was also the highest-attended single sport event in U.S. history.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th staging of the World Cup, held in the Republic of Korea and Japan from 31 May to 30 June. South Africa 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations.

This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. This decision left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup. Italy are the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town.
