This week we have a special addition to the newsletter; We have EXTENSIVE coverage of this years Leeds festival. Literally I was shocked, I have never seen anything like it, 29 bands reviewed, along with photos. This is some of the biggest festival coverage we have ever pushed out to our readers, so, here it all is. Get the kettle on, get the biscuits out and knuckle down to some festival reading. Also, I'm really happy to drop the link in this newsletter for the long-awaited interview with Dallas Green of City and Colour, amazing musician, really nice guy. Read below.

For those of you who sway more towards the darker side of music, Leeds Festival is definitely the one for you. Of course, Leeds didn’t start out seeped in screams, riffs and bottling tiffs. If you’re partial to a Werther’s Original and enjoy growing veg in your allotment, you may recall a small, solo, jazz and blues festival starting life in Surrey somewhere around 1961. After spending a decade delighting music fans, this annual jamboree finally found its sacred home in central Reading. It wasn’t until the eve of the new millennium when Reading found its festival soul mate in Leeds (starting life at the Temple Newsam manor estate – the same grounds as V Festival back in ‘97 and ‘98).

Simple Plan - Get Your Heart On!

Being a Simple Plan fan since their first album ‘No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls’ I knew, to a certain degree, what to expect. I’ve found over the years that Simple Plan are one of those bands who ‘go with the times’ but at the same time never truly change their product too drastically (I mean just look at Papa Roach!) We’ve heard Simple Plan pull out a ballad or two over the years on their albums, and Get Your Heart On! isn’t short of a good pop-punk ballad either. ‘This Song Saved My Life’ is a powerful song which, from what I can gather, is about everyone who’s stood by the band over the years. It has a nice piano intro, which is very new-wave dance sounding, and then towards the end of the track we’re greeted with gang vocals that sound like a group of lucky Simple Plan fans.

WU LYF - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain

Their hype was massive and perhaps unwarranted since it was based on little more than a press photo, a cryptic music video, a nonexistent sold out single, and about two songs. Sound Of Guns w/Support At King Tuts, Glasgow

It's amazing what a bit of experience can do. It's been seven months since I first discovered the capabilities of the ferocious four-piece Sound Of Guns after they supported Detroit Social Club at King Tuts, and in that time they've fully completed their evolution into a seasoned, dynamic act well worthy of the praise that they've been receiving. After the success of debut album What Came From Fire and appearances at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds last year, Sound Of Guns were asked to support the notoriously rowdy rogues The View on their UK tour, which sparked up a friendship that helped earn them a second tour support slot again in March. They sold out their Liverpool Sound City festival appearance, supported Miles Kane on tour and completed a second album. With all this productivity in mind, I was anticipating great things from them.

Anthrax - Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't

Anthrax have released the first single, “Fight ‘Em ‘Til You Can’t”, from the as-yet-unreleased album as a free download from their website. Even if you’re not an Anthrax fan, or even a thrash fan, go take a listen, I’m pretty certain you’ll like it. It’s quite a “radio-friendly” track, as the YouTube critics would crown it, but I like the new direction. Don’t forget, Joey Belladonna hasn’t appeared on an Anthrax record for over 20 years and it’s his high range of melodic vocals that truly defined Anthrax as a band in the early days. So to have this element back into the band is not only the reclamation of a vital asset, but a new (or old?) sound for Anthrax.

In Flames - Sounds of a Playground Fading

You know what, I’m fed up. I really am. I give up with you all. I’ve tried telling you, but none of you will listen to me. I am very aware that In Flames don’t sound like they used to, but stop living in the past. Yes, they are not a melodic death metal band anymore, that much is obvious, but stop whining dude, seriously. They’ve evolved over the years, you can hear it through the albums, and now, in 2011, I’d call them a metal act. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though. So there are less death growls and black riffs, but we’ve gained maturity and intelligence, which still makes your head bang.

Roadrunner Records are proud to welcome Royal Republic to the fold. The band’s debut single, ‘Tommy Gun’ is set for a 14th February release, with their first UK dates to follow in March. The single is taken from the band’s first full-length album, ‘We Are The Royal’, which will hit UK shelves on 14th March.

Formed in Malmö, Sweden at the end of 2007, Royal Republic are loaded with a punk sensibility and a funk-influenced repertoire, chock-full of explosive energy. Frontman Adam tells us, “Our musical backgrounds are extremely diverse. It all probably starts with The Hives or Danko Jones, then stretches out to a little Metallica, on up to Bob Dylan, Norah Jones and even film music or classical.”

Like Electric Six before them, the band’s sense of irony and humour is reflected in their lyrics (check out album tracks ‘Underwear’ and ‘Good To Be Bad’), coupled with the fact that their catchy, sticky tunes attach themselves to your brain and refuse to let go.

Our four intrepid Swedes (Adam Grahn - vocals, Hannes Irengård - guitar, Jonas Almén - bass and Per Andreasson – drums) are excited to get cracking over here, commenting; "This is it! In 2011, Royal Republic will invade the United Kingdom!! We do so with great confidence and a huge amount of respect for the country that has been the home to some of the greatest bands and artists throughout the history of rock n' roll. It's gonna be epic! Thanks for having us!” Their high-octane live show has been seducing the masses across in mainland Europe and now it the UK’s turn to experience ‘The Royal’.

AltSounds is an international alternative online music community. By ‘Alternative’ we don’t mean ‘Alt Rock,’ we mean it as its technical definition - Alternative to the mainstream. It’s about having a choice, both in music and where you go to hear it. At AltSounds, we have designed a community that gives listeners a place to find the best new music available in an environment that works for them and with them. For artists, we have designed profiles that work like EPKs and have built-in, automatic promotion to help them gain new fans and create their own buzz more easily. For labels, we have designed an inexpensive promotion and advertising system that allows them to reach a large focused audience with incredible ease. We have seen what else is out there and decided it wasn’t good enough. Other sites do not satisfy all of our needs as fans, musicians, and artist promoters. We bring the fans exactly what they want, and gather it into the most functional and visually appealing music site on the internet. Being so ‘fan-focused’ has allowed us to create a promotional system for artists unparalleled in other alleged artist sites. In addition to having profiles laid out more like EPKs, acting as the ‘ultimate fan page,’ the built-in promotion and advertising for premium artists allows the high quality music to cycle through the entire site, bringing it to people’s attention no matter where they are or what they are doing. Premium artists are also included in our various radio stations, making their music even more accessible, and also qualifying them for additional front page, on-site and off-site promotion.
