The PVDA Bayside Chapter is a sister organization of the Potomac Valley Dressage Association, that represents the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We are proud to present to you the results of our Third Annual Show. The schooling show was held at Hundred Acre Wood, a wonderful training facility, in Easton. A big thank you to Charish and Larry Campbell for allowing us to use their facility, and making it look so beautiful, for the most perfect spring weather, we could have wished for.

We had 73 entries, between dressage, eventing dressage, western dressage and costume classes! The place was buzzing with Pony Clubbers, Adult Amateurs, FEI Riders, and fabulous up and coming young horses.

Celia Vornholt “r”, was our judge, and boy did she work for her money, along with her two volunteer scribes. Her watchful eye did not miss anything, and she definitely set the bar high for the show season upon us. Using the new “half point” scale also significantly impacted the scores.

We could have definitely not done it without the help of our volunteers, assisting with running, scoring, selling food, registration and scribing. And a special thank you to our generous sponsors: Kingstown Feed Store (Chestertown), Dover Saddlery (Crofton), Out Back Tack (Easton), and Clabberhill Furniture Store (Church Hill).

Special awards for the day went to the following people:

Best Eventer: Macy Beach, Lewes, DE

High Score Champion: Dawn Beach, Lewes, DE

By Beth Collier

Everyone who took the time and effort to train, take lessons, endure the weather, dress up, and compete certainly deserve awards, regardless of final scores or placings. Here are my personal favorite Maryland dressage horse/rider combinations from the past year.

Medals and USDF Awards
Congratulations to the Maryland riders who earned qualifying scores at USEF-licensed shows for a U.S. Dressage Federation rider award. Three Maryland riders earned their USDF Gold Medals in 2011: Christine Betz (Thurmont), Jaralyn Finn (Poolesville) and Susanne Hassler (Chesapeake City). In order to qualify for a USDF Gold Medal, riders must earn at least four scores of 60% or higher showing in Intermediaire I, Intermediaire II, and Grand Prix classes.

The following riders earned their USDF Silver Medals: Cheryl Ann Loane (Thurmont), Clare Green (Damascus), and Alexa Briscoe (Boyds). Riders qualify for a USDF Silver Medal for qualifying scores earned at Fourth Level and Prix St. Georges.

The following riders earned their USDF Bronze Medal for qualifying scores at First, Second, and Third Level: Samantha Allan (Brandywine), Elizabeth Goodwin (Hughesville – pictured above), Lauren Kimmel (Poolesville), Julio Mendoza (Laytonsville), Cheryl Ann Loane (Thurmont), Linda Reinhardt (West Friendship), Joanne Silverman (Elkton), Elizabeth Simmeth-Ensor (Jarrettsville), and Angela Voss (Baltimore).

Jaclyn Sink (Highland) earned a USDF Rider Performance award for Second Level. Cherie Chauvin (Silver Spring) and Sharon Sexton (Darlington) each earned a USDF Rider Performance award for First Level. Alexis Rossetti (Waldorf) and Lauren Kimmel (Poolesville) each earned a USDF Rider Performance award for Training Level.

Scott and Susanne Hassler (Hassler Dressage, Chesapeake City) earned the USDF Region 1 Outstanding Contribution to the Dressage Community in Region One – Adult.

Congratulations to Maryland Dressage Association member Jacqueline Caldwell and her horse, JC’s Keely of Texel, who earned a Carol Lavell Gifted Training Scholarship (for Adult Amateur riders) from the Dressage Foundation. Jacqueline plans to train with Phoebe Devoe-Moore for the coming season. The Gifted Fund was founded with a donation from Carol Lavell in remembrance of her Olympic dressage horse, Gifted.

Maryland Dressage Rider of the Year
Christopher Hickey, dressage trainer at Hilltop Farm in Colora, had a long and successful show year in Europe and the U.S. He is one of only five U.S. riders to appear on the USEF High Performance 2011 Invite List (with Douglas Hilltop) and he appears on the USEF Developing Riders List with Witness Hilltop. He also appears on the USEF Grand Prix Long List/Ranking List with Douglas Hilltop and is the highest ranking Maryland rider on the FEI World Individual Ranking List.

Grand Prix
Susanne Hassler (Hassler Dressage, Chesapeake City) now appears among the top 20 riders on the FEI World Cup Dressage 2011/2012 North America division list. Susanne also appears on the FEI World Individual Ranking List for dressage. Harmony’s Baroncelli (Bergamon X Maderia), a thirteen-year-old Hanoverian stallion, owned by the Silver Spur Operating Company and Susanne, made their Grand Prix debut in May 2011 at the Potomac Valley Dressage Association Spring Show at Morven Park, VA. “Mr. B,” as he is called around the barn, won the Reserve Champion title for the GAIG Finals Grand Prix Open Division and he won the Champion title at the CBLM Finals.

FEI Freestyle and more!
GKB Coal Magic (Ragtime Voodoo Magic X Metis Koffee), a 15.2-hand Morgan stallion owned and ridden by Lucy Tidd (Germantown) won the CBLM Finals for Intermediaire I Freestyle. The pair also won the GAIG Finals Intermediaire I Adult Amateur division and placed fifth at the CBLM Finals for Intermediaire I. In addition, they won the Reserve Champion title for the GAIG Prix St. Georges Adult Amateur Division and placed eighth at that level in the CBLM Finals.

Intermediaire II
Tonico Do Top, a Lusitano stallion owned by Joe and Linda Dennison and ridden by Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel (Woodbine) won the CBLM Finals for Intermediaire II.

Intermediaire I
Witness Hilltop (Hamlet X Burggraaf), owned by Hilltop Farm and ridden by Christopher Hickey, placed tenth out of sixteen riders in the 2011 USEF National Intermediaire Championship and Selection Trial for the Pan Am Games in September at Gladstone, NJ. At only eight years old, Witness could easily be a contender for the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada, in 2015.

Prix St. Georges
Bugatti (Bergamon X Raffinesse), a thirteen-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Hilltop Farm and ridden by Michael Bragdell, won the Reserve Champion title at the CBLM Finals and was third in the GAIG Finals.

Jill Kemenosh (Chesapeake City) completed her final year as a Young Rider with her fourth consecutive invitation to compete at the USEF National Young Rider Championship in Gladstone, NJ where she finished sixth overall. Jill and her Dutch gelding Nelzon are coached by Scott Hassler (Hassler Dressage, Chesapeake City).

FEI Junior Rider
Pik L (Pik Bube II X Abaja), an eighteen-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Horses Unlimited (NM) and ridden by sixteen-year-old Kya Endreson, a working student at Hassler Dressage, won the USEF FEI Junior Championship. She was the only rider to score over 70% in the FEI Junior Team and Individual Tests. She was also on the gold medal-winning Junior Dressage Team at the Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championship, Lexington, KY. (With only three riders, the team did not have a drop score).

FEI Young Horses
Marne Martin-Tucker’s six-year-old Oldenburg mare Royal Coeur (Royal Hit X Le Coeur) now appears as one of the top six Young Dressage Horses on the USEF High Performance Dressage Developing Horse/Rider List. They represented the U.S. at the 2011 World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden, Germany this past August. Marne earned her qualifying scores for the championships at dressage shows in Great Britain.

Dressage Breeding Sire
Royal Prince (Rohdiamant X Piri Piri), a thirteen-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Hilltop Farm, has earned the USEF Dressage Breeding Sire Of The Year award for the fourth consecutive year. He was also awarded his fourth star by the International Sporthorse Registry/Oldenburg Registry North America (ISR/Oldenburg NA) in 2011.

by Beth Collier

Ever since its beginning in 1975, Dressage at Devon has attracted more than 700 of the country’s top dressage horses and riders. Around 35,000 spectators flock to the historic Devon Fairgrounds in Devon, Pennsylvania for this six-day breed and performance show. New this year was the improved footing in the Gold Ring, where the FEI Grand Prix competitors were allowed to warm up. It rained quite a bit during the show and on Saturday evening but the improved drainage system held up. The two show rings and warm-up rings are all outdoors, making the footing a competitor priority.

The scheduled special exhibition this year was by Guy McLean (pictured left), an Australian horseman who also made an appearance at this year’s Washington International Horse Show. He performed several different exhibitions with horses at liberty while he either rode Western or bareback. His exhibitions usually include pyrotechnics and cracking bullwhips. He used his bullwhips during his first exhibition, but the loud snapping terrified most of the dressage horses throughout the show grounds so he eliminated this element during his other exhibitions.

The judges for the show included Maryland’s Linda Zang (USA), Elizabeth McMullen (Canada), Wim Ernes (Netherlands), Mary Seefried (Australia), Gustaf Svalling (Sweden), Dr. Paramjeet Chopra (India), Jo Graham (Great Britain), Raphael Saleh (France), Jane Weatherwax (USA), Eduart De Wolff Van Westerrode (Netherlands), and Jeanne McDonald (USA). The FEI Chief Steward was Elisabeth Williams. The USEF Technical Delegate was Janine Malone.

Young Horses
Maryland riders and owners were represented in most of the classes ranging from the Young Horse Tests to Grand Prix. The Young Horse Tests begin the performance show on Thursday.

Hilltop Farm (Colora) dressage trainer Christopher Hickey (pictured left) won the top two ribbons in the USEF Young Horse Test For Four-Year-Olds. He placed first scoring 85.80% with the Hanoverian mare Ripley HTF (Royal Prince x Komtesse V), and a 76.60% for second place with Balissa HTF (Bugatti Hilltop x Contesse), also a Hanoverian mare. On Friday Ripley HTF placed second in the second USEF Young Horse Test for Four-Year-Olds and Balissa HTF placed fourth.

Also on Thursday, Biscaya (Johnson x St. Pr. St. Audrey), a 15.3-hand Oldenburg mare owned by Nancy Holowesko of Crosiadore Farm (Trappe) and ridden by head trainer Ulla Parker, placed third in the FEI Young Horse Test for Five-Year-Olds, scoring a 76%. Sabati (Sandro Hit x Rosalea), a 17.1-hand Oldenburg gelding, also owned by Nancy and ridden by Ulla, placed second in the FEI Young Horse Test for Six-Year-Olds with a 77%. On Friday, Biscaya won the FEI Young Horse Test for Five-Year-Olds with an 80.80%. Sabati placed third in Friday’s FEI Young Horse Test For Six-Year-Olds.

Friday Highs and Lows
On Friday, Witness Hilltop (Hamlet x Francis), an 8-year-old Dutch gelding owned by Hilltop Farm and ridden by Christopher Hickey, placed second out of eleven entries in the FEI Prix St. Georges class, scoring 66.89%. The next day, Witness Hilltop earned second again, this time with a 66.26% in the Intermediaire I test.

Hassler Dressage (Chesapeake City) working student Kya Endreson arrived at Devon with a championship already under her belt. In early September, she won the USEF National Junior Dressage Championship at Gladstone, New Jersey, riding Pik L (Pik Bube II x Abaja), an 18-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Horses Unlimited (NM). Unfortunatly Devon was not as great an outing for her and Pik L, as in the FEI Junior Team Test at Devon judge Jo Graham rang the bell and stated that the horse appeared unsound, which is cause for elimination.

Success on Saturday
Saturday is a long show day that starts with Fourth Level tests in the Gold Ring and Prix St. Georges in the Dixon Oval.

Jessica Jo Tate (Chesapeake City) placed second with Faberge (pictured left), owned by Elizabeth Guarsico of Virginia, scoring a 65.42% at Prix St. Georges. In the same class, Michael Bragdell of Hilltop Farm rode Bugatti Hilltop to a 62.32%, which placed the pair in 10th.

In order to qualify for the Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night, the biggest show night at Devon, riders had to score at least 58% in Friday’s Grand Prix Test. Susanne Hassler of Hassler Dressage (Chesapeake City), qualified aboard Harmony’s Baroncelli (owned by Silver Spur Operating Company) with a 60.04%. They placed 10th on Friday. By the second half of the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday night, it was pouring! Susanne and Harmony’s Baroncelli managed to pull out a 66.25% to placed eighth. The pair made their Grand Prix debut only four months before Devon at the Potomac Valley Dressage Association Spring at Morven Park show in May.

A Chilly Sunday Conclusion
On Sunday, both rings started at 8 a.m. and the temperature was very chilly, barely 50 degrees. In the Intermediaire I test Faberge and Jessica Jo Tate placed third, scoring 64.42%.

In Sunday’s Intermediaire I Freestyle, Witness Hilltop and Christopher Hickey placed second, scoring 69.35%. Christopher has had an amazing show career with Witness in a short time.
