3. Depilatory creams. There are many options when it comes to depilatory creams, but all basically work the same; they weaken the hair so that it can easily be sloughed off, and often it grows back slower and comes in finer than with shaving. You’ll just have to use it a few days beforehand since the chemicals can make your skin red and sensitive.

Planning a wedding on a budget can be challenging, especially if you: A) want to invite a lot of people, and B) have a lot of traditional ideas (or, your family does) about what a wedding must include. As a bride that’s currently planning a medium-sized wedding for as little money as possible, I’ve had to make fairly difficult decisions about what I can and can’t have due to budget restrictions. On this journey, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are some truly unnecessary wedding details that have been built into our traditions. We just don’t need them! Don’t let tradition empty out your wallet.

1. You don’t need hors d’oeuvres.

Say what? You heard me. The food will most likely be the most expensive portion of your wedding. Adding hors d’oeuvres will only bring that expense up! A simple veggie tray to feed everyone will set you back by probably $250. And, let’s face it, that would be some boring hors d’oeuvres. Here’s how this works:

• In your invites, say “drinks at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m.”, instead of saying “cocktail hour”. That term will lead people to believe that you’re providing food.
• If there’s a break between your ceremony and reception, include a card with some information about things people can do during the down time. Include a list of restaurants and snack places, for those who need to nosh.
• If there’s no break between your ceremony and reception, guests hopefully ate before they came. If they didn’t, well, they’ll just have to wait an hour. No big deal! Seriously. The day is about you – yes, you want your guests to be comfortable, but not at the expense of an extra $1,000 or more. Trust me, they can wait.

2. A groom’s dinner? Pish posh!

The groom’s dinner, which is usually the rehearsal dinner, does not have to be a big to-do. In fact, it can be as low-key as you want it to be, or even non-existent! No need to blow big bucks on this pre-party. Here’s how to pull this off:

• Ask your ceremony venue if there’s an area where you can have a potluck, then let the family bring a bunch of food. Now, that’s a party for cheap!
• Have the rehearsal in the afternoon, and ask some people to bring sweet treats to nosh on afterwards.
• Go out afterwards, but let it be known that everyone will be paying for his or her own meal and drinks. You do not need to be expected to buy everyone’s dinner, on top of all your wedding expenses. Nonsense!

3. Big cake, shmig cake.

Nowadays, even though cake is the old standby, desserts of any kind can be a stand in. Also, you do not need a big, 5-tier extravaganza cake. Yes, it’s cool, and yes, it’s pretty. And then, it gets cut, and you all eat it. If that’s worth $1,000 or more to you, then go for it. If not, here are some cake replacement ideas:

• If you really have your heart set on a big fancy cake, use styrofoam – it may cost less! You just have a spot that’s real cake, for you and your hubby to cut into, and then the smallest tier is real cake so that you can save it for your anniversary. The rest? Styrofoam covered in frosting. Guests eat whatever other dessert you have lined up.
• Be original. Bars, cookies, pies, donuts, build-your-own-sundae bars – your options are endless, and many of those options are cheaper than cake! You can even create a tower-like structure of any dessert, to replicate a big cake.
• Recruit! Some venues will allow you to bring in food that’s not from a licensed caterer, which means you can have your family make desserts (or even your cake!). Check with your venue, though – it’s not allowed at many places.

4. Myth: You need lots of flowers to decorate.

Flowers are more expensive than you’d ever dream them of being, before you start planning and looking into it. Seems strange when you can buy those little bulbs for a couple bucks, right? Fortunately, you absolutely do not need to put flowers everywhere in order to have a proper wedding. For the flowers that you do need (like bouquets), there are ways of getting them for cheaper! Here are some flower/no-flower tips:

• Get the ones you do need wholesale, from a farmer’s market, or from your local grocery store/market/place that carries flowers.
• Arrange them yourself, or recruit a friend or family member (or two) who have an eye for detail. If you’re too worried about messing it up, someone at the place where you buy them might be willing to arrange them for you, for cheaper than a normal florist.
• Use something else on the tables as decor. Fill bottles with wheat, grasses, greens, colorful beads, beans, moss, or any other filler. You can also just use things like floating candles, or a couple single flowers if you must use flowers.

• You know exactly what you are getting and ordering in advance does ensure you a guaranteed dress on the actual day.
• You have a wider selection to choose from, which gives you time to think about you want.
• It gives you time to perfect it if there are parts of the dress that you wish to change, but this can take time and may leave you with no dress at all on the day.
• Once you have bought the dress you cannot change your mind after, what you may have fallen in love with 4 months ago may not be so tasteful or you may fall in love with a different and cheaper dress.
• Fashion, it changes all the time and if you are fashion conscious then the last thing you want is for your dress to become dated or less desirable.
• You may gain/lose weight by the time the big day comes, which means you may have to pin in the dress, which can change the overall look!
• If you pre plan the dress then you may be able to pay it off in smaller increments, which means you may be able to have a slightly more expensive dress than originally planned.

Last Minute:

• It is much cheaper, you can get lots of dresses on offer or discount.
• You do not have a large selection to choose from, which means if you don’t see one you like, you’ll be stuck with a dress you hate.
• If you choose a dress you like, you’re not likely to change your opinion of it the very same day, so you’ll definitely have a dress you like on the day.
• It will definitely fit on the day if it fit when you tried it on in the shop, as there’s not enough time for you to gain or lose dramatic amounts of weight.
• You don’t have to hold onto it for a long period of time, as it can be a pain having to look after a large and delicate dress in your home, even worse if you have pets or children.

Birch twigs and willow branches
White is definitely of the most loved colors used in a winter wedding color scheme. A trend that has been around for a while is to use twigs or large branches and spray paint the shade of white you want. You can them put them in a simple vase and add decorations of your choice. Some brides like to keep it simple, but others like to add hanging crystals or even hanging birds or icicles. The possibilities are endless. Get creative with the branches and you will have a hit! Don’t forget, branches can be free if you look for them yourself!

Frosted wine bottles
Another creative and easy idea is to use wine bottles as vases for your wedding centerpiece. After removing the labels from three different sized wine bottles then spray them with a frosted color of your choice. You can even mix the colors for a more eclectic look. Them, simply arrange them as you see fit and use a long burning taper candle in each one. You would be surprised how lovely this is, and again, you can add what you want to the bottles as far as embellishments go. If you think this might be expensive, consider asking friends and family to save their wine bottles and you will collect them before getting started on a the centerpiece!
