This has been a busy few months for Down Syndrome Liverpool, we have managed to squeeze in Summer trips to the Yellow Sub, Chester Zoo and a bowling night at Hollywood Bowl.

The Yellow Sub is a favourite with parents and children alike, the children big and small enjoyed playing on the structures and slides, parents enjoyed the chance to sit and chat and everyone enjoyed the lovely food.

Chester Zoo started as a little bit of a damp day, but despite that everyone seemed to have a lovely time. The children enjoyed seeing all the animals and trips on the boat and monorail. Children and parents went home exhausted after a good day out.

A week later and there we all were at the Hollywood Bowl, an event the adults seemed to enjoy as much as the children. I think there may be a picture somewhere of me getting a bit over excited when I got a strike!

The winners of each lane were presented with a medal and sweets were given to the other participants. The staff at Hollywood Bowl ensured everyone got their food on time and made sure that everything ran smoothly so a very big thank you to them.

The next big events we will be holding are our Fancy Dress Party on November 1st and our Christmas Party on December 5th, we are also hoping to hold a bowling evening for teens and adults with Down syndrome who may feel they are a little too old for the Christmas Party, or maybe they would like to come to both.
Please look out for the dates in the newsletter and please be sure to let the secretary know you are coming.

We have been very fortunate this year in that we have had substantial donations, this has enabled us to provide these social activities. In order for this level of activity to continue please make sure you support any fund raising events as this will impact on the amount of events we can organise in the future.

Down Syndrome Liverpool and the SENISS service jointly provided training for Education Support Assistants working with children in Liverpool's schools, both primary and secondary.

This was in response to concerns expressed by both Down Syndrome Liverpool and SENISS, about how children and young people with Down syndrome in Liverpool's mainstream schools could best be supported.

This is both an issue for those children in schools now and also for the increasing numbers of children who have Down syndrome who are expected to enter reception classes in the near future.

After several meetings held between DSL and SENISS it was agreed that working together would be the best approach to this. DSL had obvious links to the National Down's Syndrome Association and the expertise of their trainers. SENISS had access to the resources of the local authority.

Consequently DSL provided the funding for the trainers and worked with the national association to put together a training programme for ESA's. SENISS paid for and provided the venue, the refreshments and the organising of the ESA's to be there on the day.

The training took place in Toxteth Annex on January 28th. Over ninety participants attended the event, including speech therapists who are also working with our children and young people.

The training was delivered by experts in their fields - Dr Stephanie Lorenz, Cecilie Mackinnon, Sandy Alton and Julie Wagge from Symbol UK.

They covered a wide range of issues that impacted on the learning of children who have Down syndrome. The learning profile of children with Down syndrome was addressed by Cecilie MacKinnon and the communication profile by Julie Wagge. This provided the context for a series of workshops designed to give practical advice on the following areas:
• Numeracy
• Promoting Age Appropriate Behaviour
• Addressing Specific Aspects of Speech Language and Communication
• Reading and Writing Primary
• Promoting Positive Behaviour
• Transition to Secondary School

Feedback from the event has been extremely positive, both officially through the evaluation received by DSL from the day and also anecdotally from conversations with parents and ESA's.

At a time when we are working hard to raise funds and succeeding in doing so, we need to be identifying where those funds are best spent in terms of having most impact.
There is no doubt in the minds of the trustees that this has been money well spent.
We also need to be developing our relationship with service providers not only being critical when we think they are getting it wrong, and advocating on behalf of children and families.

We also need to be developing partnerships when we can in the best interests of children, young people and families maximising our joint resources and ensuring our children get effective services delivered by properly trained staff.

The ESA training in this respect should not be seen as a one off but the possible springboard to other such joint initiatives.

Down Syndrome Liverpool received a massive funding boost at the start of 2009 as Merseyrail staff voted us their Charity of the Year.

DSL was invited to attend Merseyrail's annual event for partners as we were introduced as their nominated charity. At the event we had an exhibition table where we were able to promote what we do for members in Liverpool and to provide those interested with information about Down's syndrome. As a result of this we made several very useful contacts.

Bart Schmeink, Merseyrail's Managing Director, a busy man on the night, invited representatives of DSL to Rail House in February.

Chair John Hogan, member Nicola McCaroll and her mum Josie Tierney who nominated Down Syndrome Liverpool to Merseyrail met with Bart Schmeink on February 20th to receive a £10,000 cheque and to be told that this was just the first of several 'instalments' which would be raised over the next twelve months!

It was difficult not to look stunned at this news, and to have some initial discussion as to what was to take place over the course of the year.

This is a brief outline of what is being planned by Merseyrail staff to raise money for DSL:

April - collecting (buckets) on Grand National day at Aintree Station, Central Station and Moorfields Station.

July 4th - Golf Competition

July 5th - Sports day/it's a Knockout Golf day - end August

Sponsored Bike Ride to Holland - to be confirmed

Oct 31st - Halloween Ball

There is an expectation that this is to be a partnership between ourselves and Merseyrail, that we join in with the initiatives planned and support Merseyrail staff who are doing the bulk of the fundraising. I feel this is only right and as we get more details of the events we will be asking you, our members to support those initiatives.

Our organisation stand to benefit enormously from this gesture and we can really expand what we are doing to support families and children affected by Down syndrome in Liverpool.

Greg O'Keefe and his friends decided to join the local charity football scene on Merseyside and approached me with the idea of donating any monies raised to Down Syndrome Liverpool. Not only does it provide us with a regular donation it spreads the word of Down Syndrome throughout the city. This can only raise our charity's profile and subsequently benefit our members.

The theme this year is about empowering people with Down’s syndrome along with their parents, carers, family and friends to be aware of their human rights and to demand them in all aspects of life.

Every year Awareness Week gives all members and supporters the opportunity to stand-up and shout-out about Down’s syndrome. It is the perfect chance to raise awareness of the work of the local charities like Down Syndrome Liverpool and to champion the rights of people with Down’s syndrome.

You may remember some time ago I blooged that the Everton FC midfielder Lee Carsley, who has a young son with Down syndrome, had put up for auction a Planet Hollywood leather jacket, an item all the first team squad were presented with by Blues director Robert Earl on a recent trip to New York.

Lee decided to get the Everton squad to sign his and said all proceeds raised would go to Down Syndrome Liverpool.

True to his word Lee met up with us recently and presented us with a cheque for £1000!!

Shauna Hogan and Daniel Daley both keen Evertonians managed to get time off from school to come and meet Lee and discuss tactics with him for the last game of the season - something must have rubbed off!

This is a significant sum raised for us by Lee and on behalf of Down Syndrome Liverpool the committee members and I as well as all our members would like to pass on our thanks and appreciation to Lee.

After recommendation from one of the mum’s in the group we have booked 2 taster sessions of ‘Brain Gym’.

We’re unsure whether to role out the sessions during the monthly support group or as 2 separate sessions – depending on how many people are interested.

If you’d like to take part please contact Cathy at Dingle Lane Children’s Centre on: 0151 233 4934.

The two sessions would be split into two parts - one theory part for parents and one experiential session including the children (45 mins each with a break in between). For the theory part we would provide a creche in the room next door. Unfortunately we can only provide a crèche for 6 children so places would be limited.

Below is some information taken from the ‘Brain Gym’ website to give you some idea what it’s about.

What is Brain Gym®
Brain Gym® is an educational, movement based programme which uses simple movements to integrate the whole brain, senses and body, preparing the person with the physical skills they need to learn effectively. It can be used to improve a wide range of learning, attention and behaviour skills. Educational Kinesiology and Brain Gym® are the result of many years of research into learning and brain function by an educationalist, Dr Paul Dennison PhD, from the United States. It is now used in over 45 countries and is recognised as a safe, effective and innovative educational and self-development tool.

‘Children with Down’s syndrome master gross motor skills -- everything from rolling over to running but need additional help and encouragement to maximise development. Typical children walk at around 12 months of age, but the average child with Down syndrome walks at about 24 months of age. The mastery of gross motor development is the first arena in which children with Down’s syndrome will take on the challenges of life. Fine motor development, speech and education are all challenges that lie ahead, but gross motor development: rolling over, sitting, crawling and walking are the first challenges s/he will meet in life.
This workshop provides parents and with essential information about motor development including the impact of retained infant reflexes associated with Down syndrome.
In the two sessions we will run a two part workshop first working with parents on the theory and experiencing the movement for themselves and then getting the children involved with the exercises to improve balance and coordination. ‘

Who does it help?
Originally created to help children and adults with learning challenges, for example dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD, Brain Gym® is now used to improve functioning and life quality by people from all walks of life from education to the arts, business, healthcare, sport and personal development. The movements can be safely used by people of almost any age and mobility, from babies upwards.

What does it help?
The improvement in whole brain function that can result from use of the Brain Gym® movements has benefits such as:

academic skills – for example, reading, writing, spelling and maths
memory, concentration and focus
physical co-ordination and balance
communication skills and language development
self-development and personal stress management

Can BRAIN GYM® help with special needs, such as Attention Deficit Disorder, hyperactivity, brain damage, or similar challenges?
Children with special needs and severe learning challenges benefit positively from BRAIN GYM®, as is attested to by thousands of families using the activities. Licensed instructors specializing in this area of work may recommend a more intensive program and a simplified or assisted application of the movements.

Can the use of BRAIN GYM® activities or balances affect health, or alleviate stress?
Research over 30 years shows the correlation between brain organization (dominance patterns), attention deficit, allergies, and auto immune deficiency. Balance of the left and right cortical hemispheres depends on cross lateral patterning, including binocular vision, binaural hearing, and contralateral movement. Common sense tells us what research has validated: chronic one-sided behaviours (monocular vision or excessive left- or right-handedness), especially without the context of whole body movement, polarize the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, adversely affecting learning, behaviour, and immune response. Both as a result and a possible cause of these one-sided behaviours, chronic anger, frustration, and depression become part of a cycle of habituated adrenal response and the related high levels of cortisol in the blood.

Does the use of BRAIN GYM® promote permanent, positive changes?
BRAIN GYM® promotes the ability to learn and to retain learning at a deep, whole-brained level. New learning occurs when a person is relaxed and easily able to access their sensory system for seeing and listening, and to comfortably feel and express their feelings. Learning tends to be more permanent, accessible, and applicable when a person is not tense, stressed, or frightened. As self-confidence and self-esteem increase, motivation and behaviour generally improve as well.

How does movement affect the brain? Do actual physical changes in the brain occur through the use of BRAIN GYM®?
Yes. Briefly, BRAIN GYM® works by facilitating optimal achievement of mental potential through specific movement experiences. All acts of speech, hearing, vision, and coordination are learned through a complex repertoire of movements. BRAIN GYM® promotes efficient communication among the many nerve cells and functional centres located throughout the brain and sensory motor system. Blocks in learning occur when the body is tense and information cannot flow freely among these centres. The BRAIN GYM® movements stimulate this flow of information within the brain and sensory system, freeing the innate ability to learn and function at top efficiency.

Is BRAIN GYM® the same as movement therapy, yoga, or other exercises?
BRAIN GYM® is similar to, yet different from, other movement programs. BRAIN GYM® helps to increase flexibility and coordination, as other programs do, yet it also provides specific activities to facilitate brain function for the physical skills required for such activities as reading, writing, and spelling. BRAIN GYM® is fun, easy, and requires no special talents or coordination skills. BRAIN GYM® is a good warm-up for all exercise programs.
