SINGLE DOORS

• The standard size is going to be approx. 24″ x 36″  (or 2′x3′) and works great for most people/businesses

• If you truly are using your mat to remove debris from shoes, consider going to a 3′x4′ mat

• If you want to design the mat so that it is longer than wider (vertical orientation) a 3′x5′ looks great and provides lots of space for your personalization

DOUBLE DOORS

• The standard size is approx. 48″ x 72″ (or 4′x6′)
• If you truly only use one of the double doors, or you have decorations that will be beside the mat you might consider a 3′x5′

SINGLE DOOR w/Sidelight or oversized

• The standard size is 36″ x 48″ (3′x4′)
• These are truly the doors where preference and decorations truly rule.  If there are planters, or benches, etc you might consider staying with smaller 24″ x36″ mat size (or close to that)

Americans are passionate about their pets. Our animal friends are part of the family, and like many members of the family, they are sometimes messy. Dog enthusiasts can also order a personalized mat based on their canine companion’s particular breed with the Googly Eyed Dog mats. Part of the company’s Write Your Own Mat series, the Googly Eyed Dog mats feature logos designed by artist and illustrator Chris Brock. They are durable, rubber backed mats that a 2’-by-3’ in size and $74.

When you are searching for a doormat for your business, consider these questions:

1. What size do you need? And how many?
2. Will the mat be used indoors or outdoors?
3. What look are you going for?
4. If outdoors, is the entranceway covered or completely open to the elements (rain, wind, etc)?
5. Is the doorway in direct sunlight?

Typically, if the mat is for business use, you should eliminate all mats that are more than ¾” thick. I tend to steer business customers away from the Luxury Coir or hand woven coir mats. Not only is there more care involved (sweeping up the fibers, etc), but these mats can also create a tripping hazard. If you choose a mat like the DuraCoir™, which is right at ¾”, we will reduce the edging to minimize trip hazard issues.

If the mat is for outdoor use, it is best to choose a polypropylene carpeted mat like a Waterhog, a Luxury Berber, a DuraCoir™ or an all rubber mat. Polypropylene coated fibers tend to act similar to wax on a car. Water will sit on top of the mat instead of soaking into the mat. If you are personalizing the mat with a logo or your name, these mats cannot be dyed. These mats must either be flocked or inlaid. If the entrance is adequately covered and free of water, you could opt for a rubber backed carpeted mat, but it will not last as long.

To determine the appropriate mat size that you need, measure your doorway from door jam to door jam. Your mat should slightly touch or overlap the door jam on both sides. Usually, for a single door, a 2-by-3 mat is ideal and a 4-by-6 will work for a double door.

If you have a wide entrance that features two, three or even four double doors, consider choosing a mat that spans the entire entrance rather than buying three or four 4-by-6s. A church to which we supplied mats had an 18-foot-wide entrance and three sets of double doors. They purchased three 4-by-6 mats, one for each set of doors. As the parishioners entered, invariably one or all of the mats would get kicked up and shifted. Also, the entrance area seemed to act like a wind tunnel and during windy days the air would get underneath the mats and move them. I recommended to replace the 4-by-6 mats with one 6-by-18 foot long mat. Not only did it make the entrance look grand (the logo was very large and prominent), but the mat was a lot heavier to withstand the crowd and the wind.

There are studies that indicate it is ideal to have three mats. One outdoors (a logo mat), one inside the entrance and one walk-off mat inside. With this arrangement, you will likely keep 50 percent of the dirt out of your store.

If the mat is for indoor use, the same mats mentioned above will work; however, polypropylene fabric is not necessary. Also, since water will bead on top of the mat, you run the risk of this water spilling onto the floor. A rubber backed carpeted mat would be appropriate for indoor use. These mats are generally less expensive (because they do not have the polypropylene fabric) and they are perfect for soaking up the water and keeping it off the floor.

Sunlight on a business mat can reduce the life of your mat considerably. If you get a rubber backed carpeted mat (digitally injected with a logo) for an area that is in direct sunlight for most of the day you can expect the print to fade in the sunlight in two to three years. I always recommend an inlaid or flocked mat.

Review: A couple of weeks ago I ordered a large personalized doormat as a
