The most frequent question I get about personalized a doormat is how to make a last name plural.  Below is an excerpt from Grammarist.com regarding this matter.  You will want to pay particular attention if your mat is going to be given to a grammar teacher.  I always direct my customer in the “proper” way to pluralize last names, but remind them that this is their doormat (or their gift).   The most popular ways to avoid the apostrophe issue is to change the personalization.  Either going with just a one letter monogram, using the name singularly or using something like Jones Family instead.  Honestly, there is no clear winner amongst my customers.  This is your doormat, and it should reflect you and your personality.

Plural last names

Making a last name plural should never involve an apostrophe. The members of the Johnson and Smith families, for instance, are the Johnsons and the Smiths, not the Johnson’s and the Smith’s.

Last names ending in s are no different. Most nouns ending in s are pluralized by adding es. This applies to last names as well. The members of the Edwards and Doss families are the Edwardses and the Dosses, not the Edwards’s and the Doss’s. Your spell check might disapprove of the correct forms, but spell check is wrong on this matter. If you understandably find words like Edwardses a little too awkward, consider rewording to avoid the plural. For instance, the Edwardses can become the Edwards family or the Edwards household.

There is one important way in which plural last names differ from other plurals: the last syllable of names ending in y does not become ies when made plural. The members of the Kennedy and the Clancy families are the Kennedys and the Clancys, not the Kennedies and the Clancies.   Grammarist.com

1. What type of mat do you need, i.e. where will it be located?
   Indoor logo mats are generally cheaper as they can be digitally injected or flocked.  Two processes that are a lot less labor intensive. They can also replicate the mats a lot easier making quantity price breaks much more substantial. Indoor logo mats generally start about $180 for a single 2 x 3 and can go up from there depending on the size. If you get 2 or more the price per mat can drop substantially, in many cases allowing you to get two mats for only a few dollars more than the single mat price.
   
   Outdoor logo mats can be considerably more, the All Rubber Mat is the exception (I’ll expand on that later), as they usually have to be inlaid. A process that involves cutting your logo out of material then inserting that material into your mat like a puzzle. Because of the labor involved quantity price breaks are not quite as substantial.  A 2 x 3 mat of this type can start at around $215 and go up from there depending on the size you need.
   
   All Rubber Logo Mats are the low cost alternative outdoor mats, they start at $148 for a 2.5 x 3 and go up from there. There are only standard sizes available here, so no custom cuts are allowed.
   
   
2. How many colors are in your logo?
   These days that’s not usually a concern, as most of our mats do not have a limit in colors that you need to worry about.  For example our Rubber Backed Carpeted Logo mat does have an 18 color limit but in the 10 years+ I have been doing this I have never had a customer reach that limit.
   
   However, there are still a few mats where this does become a concern. The first is the Flocked Olefin. Due to the nature of the personalization, you are limited to 4 colors, and you will pay more for for each color.  A 2 x 3 single color is about $145 but a 4 color will set you back over $200. Usually if you require more than a few colors we would direct you toward the rubber backed carpeted.
3. Of Course…The size of the mat
   We have made mats 20′ x 20′ that, depending on the type of mat, could run into the many thousand dollars.  However for the average person picking up a logomat for a double door 4′ x 6′, expect to spend around $279 starting, and closer to $500 for an outdoor carpeted, inlaid. The outdoor all rubber is the most economical outdoor mat, starting at $208 for a 4′ x 6′ mat.

   In summary if your thinking about logo mats plan on setting aside between $250 and $300 to get started.  Usually these days the cost for proofs are free and you can usually find free shipping as well.  If you are buying a high enough quantity (100’s not 10’s) don’t be afraid to negotiate, a lot of times the more you buy the better deal you can get.

Most mats that are meant to be used inside on a carpeted surface like a rubber backed carpeted mat have tiny “cleats” on the back-side that keep the mat from moving.

If the mat were outside on concrete or inside on a tile or wood surface, smooth rubber is the backing of choice.  This is because the rubber or vinyl backing creates suction between the hard surface and the mat to keep the mat in place.

The above photo is a mat me have that is on carpet, and it walks everywhere, because it is on a carpeted surface.  The only way to stop this is through the use of carpet tape or a product called magna grip. Magna Grip is a non-skid underlay that can be used on carpet or hard floor surfaces. White side up for hard floors, white side down for carpeted floors, it’s that easy.

Certain types of carpet, particularly very dense-cut pile commercial and plush carpet with soft padding, can lead to mats “walking”. Non-skid mat underlay pads can be utilized on all floor surfaces to help pervent this situation, which can occur during normal use. This revolutionary product is used in conjunction with “Carpet Cleats” to achieve maximum performance. This product utilizes an adhesive that bonds with the carpet, keeping it in place when mats are changed out to minimize service issues.

Sometimes its of a beautiful logo mat, like the one pictured of Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, or possibly just a beautiful entrance of a grand building. A lot of times I like to see what type of mat was used and how it’s holding up. The one pictured of Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse is a Luxury Berber Inlay, and it looked gorgeous. Bright red’s and White’s, with a dark grey background color, it was also customized to allow for the revolving door at the top. Very Nice.

Main factors to consider are:

1. Will the mat be used indoors, outdoors protected from the direct sun/rain or outdoors exposed to all the elements
2. How detailed is the logo and is there small text or fine lines
3. Is color a key factor
4. Is the mat in a high traffic or low traffic area
5. Is it being placed in front of a door, or being used at a counter or in a common area
