Many of the questions in GMAT’s SC section are on pronoun- antecedent agreement or Subject-Verb agreement. When you look at it, the concept of “Agreement” is very simple to understand.

Singular subject should have a singular verb and plural subject should have a plural verb.

‘Team India are playing for pride today as they are already out of the cup’ is wrong. By using both ‘are’ and ‘they’ the test setter tries to confuse you. Because ‘Team India’ is singular it should be followed by a singular verb ‘is’ and pronoun ‘it’.

Very simple! The good news is that some of the questions on agreement that the GMAT throws at you are as simple as that above. The only thing the GMAT does is append a lot of ‘crap’ to the sentence just to confuse you - ‘CUT THE CRAP’ and you almost solved the question.

The following examples from the OG11 depict exactly that:

Example1:

Efforts to equalize the funds available to school districts, a major goal of education reformers and many states in the 1970’s, has not significantly reduced the gaps existing between the richest and poorest districts.

(A) has not significantly reduced the gaps existing
(B) has not been significant in reducing the gap that exists
(C) has not made a significant reduction in the gap that exists
(D) have not significantly reduced the gap that exists
(E) have not been significant in a reduction of the gaps existing

The Crap here is ‘a major goal of education reformers and many states in the 1970’s’. So let us cut it:

Efforts to equalize the funds available to school districts, a major goal of education reformers and many states in the 1970’s, has not significantly reduced the gaps existing between the richest and poorest districts.

It’s clear now that the plural subject ‘Efforts’ should be followed by a plural verb ‘Have’. In a matter of seconds you have come down to just two options.

Example 2:

Since 1986 enrollments of African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans in fulltime engineering programs in the United States has steadily increased, while the number of other students who enter the field has fallen.
(A) has steadily increased, while the number of other students who enter the field has fallen
(B) has steadily increased, while other students entering the field have declined in number
(C) increased steadily, while there was a decline in the number of other students entering the field
(D) have steadily increased, while the number of other students entering the field has fallen
(E) have steadily increased, while that of other students who enter the field fell

“Cut the Crap” and you have:

Since 1986 enrollments of African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans in fulltime engineering programs in the United States has steadily increased, while the number of other students who enter the field has fallen.

“Enrollments” is plural so it should be followed by ‘have’ and not ‘has’ - something which most of us already know. This again leaves you with just two options.

Another way the GMAT confuses you is by the use ‘of’.

Look at the following sentence:

The arrival of new players (is/are) vital to their success.

By introducing another plural term ‘players’ with ‘of’, the question tries to confuse the test taker. Just cut the part introduced by ‘of’ and you have:

The arrival of new players is vital to their success

Remember that when you see a SC question always check for Subject-Verb and pronoun-antecedent agreements. GMAT tries to confuse you in a variety of ways so it is advisable to break up the question as we just did.

To summarize, here are few pointers you need to keep in mind:

GMAT confuses a test taker by introducing phrases that separate the subject and the verb

Sometimes ‘Of’ is used to introduce a phrase between the subject and the verb

Be suspicious of the pronouns ‘it’ or ‘they’, always check for pronoun agreement when you encounter them

Collective nouns such as team, army are singular.

Compound subjects like ‘Earth and the nine planets’ are plural

The number of is singular while A number of is plural

When Either/Or or Neither/nor is used the verb should agree whatever follows ‘or/nor’

No one is singular

Take a look at these examples from OG11:

Example 3:

Palaeontologists believe that fragments of a primate jawbone unearthed in Burma and estimated at 40 to 44 million years old provide evidence of a crucial step along the evolutionary path that led to human beings.
(A) at 40 to 44 million years old provide evidence of
(B) as being 40 to 44 million years old provides evidence of
(C) that it is 40 to 44 million years old provides evidence of what was
(D) to be 40 to 44 million years old provide evidence of
(E) as 40 to 44 million years old provides evidence of what was

Answer: D

Agreement: The subject here is ‘fragments’ and not ‘primate jawbone’, which is introduced by ‘of’.

So it should be followed by a plural verb ‘provide’. We are left with options A and D.

Idiom: ‘estimated to be’ is the correct idiom. Hence D is the answer.

Example 4:

The direction in which the Earth and the other solid planets - Mercury, Venus, and Mars - spins were determined from collisions with giant celestial bodies in the early history of the Solar System.

a. spins were determined from
b. spins were determined because of
c. spins was determined through
d. spin was determined by
e. spin was determined as a result of

Answer: D

This is a good one. It has two subjects that don’t agree with their verbs and to top it all an idiomatic expression is also tested. Also, the expression ‘Mercury, Venus and Mars’ is added to increase the distance between the subject and the verb.

Agreement:

The direction in which the Earth and the other solid planets - Mercury, Venus, and Mars - spins were determined from collisions with giant celestial bodies in the early history of the Solar System.

Subject1: ‘The direction’ - singular subject. Should be followed by a singular verb ‘was determined’.

Subject2: ‘the Earth and the other solid planets ‘- a plural subject. Should be followed by a plural verb ‘spin’.

This leaves us with options D and E.

Idiom:

‘determined by’ is the correct idiom when you are expressing a cause.

Remember ‘determined from’ is also correct but not in this context.

Determined by’ is used to express a cause-effect relationship.
Look at these two sentences:

1. *The temperature of the Earth is determined by the energy coming from the sun in the form of visible radiation. *Here there is a cause-effect relationship. ‘The temperature of the Earth’ is the effect and ‘the energy coming from the sun’ is the cause. Hence, ‘determined by; is the correct idiom.
2. *The temperature of the object can be determined from the reading on the thermometer.* Here ‘The temperature of the object’ can be found out from the ‘reading of the thermometer’ but the thermometer is not having any effect on the temperature. ‘Determined from‘ is the correct idiom.

Example 5:

Declining values for farm equipment and land, the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, is going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

(A) the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, is

(B) which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season, is

(C) the collateral which is borrowed against by farmers to get through the harvest season, is

(D) which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season, are

(E) the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, are

Answer: E

Agreement:

Declining values for farm equipment and land, the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, is going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

The subject here is ‘Values’ and should followed by the plural verb ‘are’ and not ‘is’.

Option D is awkward as it uses two infinitives together “to borrow against to get through”.

Option E is concise and grammatically correct.

If you have any doubts, please feel free to ask.

Although Dutch is spoken by everyone in The Netherlands, about 70% of Dutch can communicate in English with varying level of fluency. German is also widely spoken in The Netherlands, an influence majorly caused by its physical proximity with Germany. French is spoken and understood by Dutch but not as much as the former two languages. MBA in The Netherlands provides the much needed international flavour to participants by the rich cultural diversity existing in the country. For a small country like Holland, an international orientation included in education and training is a must for survival in our increasingly globalised world. The Dutch education system is interactive and focuses on teamwork, and cross cultural intearaction. The Netherlands is a attractive destination for lovers of the arts, music, dance, theater, art, literature and architecture. Home to 1000 museums it is said to be the country of highest museum density. Studying MBA in Holland would mean developing an open mind and increasing your international orientation.

Sometimes we get the best suggestions about life from the places that we are least expecting from. I am talking about movies and comics. Well! we watch movies to get entertained and not gain insight about life, right?

I watched ‘The Pursuit of Happyness” the other day. The movie is going in my list of ‘my all time favourite movies’ list. Why I loved it so much? For one, it was a Will Smith movie. Every time I watch his movies, I am left amazed by the greatness of his talent. Apart from that the movie is based on a true story. It leaves you wondering about the kinds of struggle people go through to achieve their dreams. There is a dialogue in the movie which says:

Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something. …You got a dream, you gotta protect it… If you want something, go get it. Period.-Christopher Gardner

I frequently see a lot of aspirants who are uncertain about whether they would get into X Business School or not. They are uncertain about their goals. I say if you want something in life, work hard to achieve it. In a recent Stanford Business School session, the presenter said that they admitted a student a few years back who wasn’t even a graduate. I am sure if that guy had taken opinion from admission consultants, he would have got a strict no. But he did believe in his dreams, he worked hard on his application, and he proved to the admissions committee that he would be a good contribution to the class. You, as an aspirant can have loads of flaws in your applications- low GPA, low GMAT, modest extracurriculars but wouldn’t you take an extra step to overcome the obstacles ?

If you think you have a weak profile for this year admission season, then I suggest that you wait for another year, work on enhancing your profile and then apply. Give your best shot whenever you do.

People who read comics regularly know how the cartoonists use their characters to tell the real stuff about life.

Woodstock was Snoopy’s best friend in the Peanuts comics. His speech is rendered almost entirely in “chicken scratch” marks, with Snoopy either directly translating or allowing the reader to deduce Woodstock’s meaning in the context of Snoopy’s replies.

It’s too late to crawl back into the egg. - Woodstock

Isn’t it true? What you did in your college, you cannot change that. You cannot go back to college to improve your low GPA. But you can take some classes at a community college to offset your low scores, you can work hard to score high in GMAT, you can work hard at your job to get good recommendations and you can use your optional essay to address your low scores.

A lot of candidates are also concerned about not having grandstand extracurricular activities. Why don’t you pick one today? Your involvement in extracurricular activities show the lighter aspect of your personality. Also, that you are a balanced person and would be able to balance work, clubs, requirements etc. at school. You don’t need to have 10 different activities to show. you just need one activity that you are truly passionate about. It can be anything from musical instrument, sport, travel, singing, dancing, painting, writing -just anything that you love to do. Pick up something that you would enjoy doing. This would help you prove that you are a well rounded person. Admissions Committee wants to know more and more about you through different components of your application, your extracurriculars would let them know your commitments, motivations and time managements.

Another quote from peanuts:

“Are you upset little friend? Have you been lying awake worrying? Well, don’t worry…I’m here. The flood waters will recede, the famine will end, the sun will shine tomorrow, and I will always be here to take care of you. -Charlie Brown to Snoopy”

Life is not sunshine and roses all the time. Each individual has his own obstacles and own weaknesses to overcome. Your weaknesses make you real. Time doesn’t remains the same all the time. What you learn during your difficult times and how you handle it matters. Everyone has setbacks and obstacles in life , schools want to know what have you done to overcome your shortcomings or what have you learnt from those obstacles. If you lost the job last year because of bad economic conditions, how did you utilise your time? If you were weak in quant, did you take up a course to overcome it? Bill Gates was a college drop-out but does that make him any less of what he has achieved today? I was watching this episode where Hrithik Roshan says that he stammered and had a weak back. Doctors told him that he couldn’t become an actor because the profession would require him to dance. His passion and strong will made him what he is today. No one has reached the stars without overcoming the hurdles.Neither would you. So rather than hiding your weaknesses, take responsibility for them and show your real strength of character to the admissions committee.

As the first deadlines for most business schools is approaching, we want to wish each one of you good luck. Work hard on every bit of your application. Put your heart in writing your essays. Your application would be read by human beings, so write in a way that touches their hearts.

Good Luck.

I generally like the professionalism in most Business school sessions and how the speakers market their business schools, I would give an A+ to Columbia’s session. I would state my reasons in a while but I think Linda Maheen, Assistant Dean for admissions, was one of the most honest speakers I have come across. She was honest about the information that she was giving. She didn’t try to hide or manipulate things. Last month I also attended the session by Rose Martinelli so I ended up making a clear distinction between the two admission directorss. Where you could have loads of fun talking to Rose Martenelli (Chicago), you could stare at Linda in awe with the amount of knowlege and grace she moves around with.

Following are some of the salient points that I gathered from Columbia Business School session.

1. Location- CBS is located in New York City, which gives you umpteen opportunities to explore. Starting from the number of multinational companies, stock exchanges, influential guest speakers ,real estate, fashion, media, marketing, restaurants, casinos, network, and what not. New York is surely an advantage.

2. They had around 400 speakers on campus last year.

3. CBS is mainly famous for finance but it can surely boast about its management, marketing, real estate and health care as well.

google_ad_width = 336;
google_ad_height = 280;
// -->
4. They have around 140 alumni in India. Very less. 5. Columbia January Intake (J Term) is a 16 month programme. It is best for people who are not looking for any career change or planning or start their own business or would be going back to their family business. The main difference between J term and the regular 2 year MBA is that the J term MBA does not include internships. 6, Early Decision deadline is those candidates who are absolutely sure about studying at Colmbia and are willing to sign the following Statement of Commitment:

As an Early Decision candidate to Columbia Business School, I understand that if I am admitted I will submit my nonrefundable $6,000 deposit to secure my place in the September entering class. I am committed to attending Columbia Business School and will withdraw all applications and decline all offers from other schools upon admission to Columbia Business School.

7. If have studied in an English Medium schools and colleges, TOEFL is optional. If you score low in GMAT Verbal (below raw score 30), Linda stressed that candidate must take TOEFL.

8. Answer to Essay 1 (What are your short-term and long-term post-MBA goals? How will Columbia Business School help you achieve these goals? (Recommended 750 word limit) plays an important role in your admission. You need not be sure about your long term goals but you must have a clear idea about what you would bring to school. A realistic expectation about what you could do after school would play a significant role in your essay. Linda suggested that for the next few weeks you do some informational interviews with your family, friends, or relatives. This would help you do a through self assessment about yourself before you finally start writing your essays.

9. Interviews are important at CBS. Mostly interviews are conducted by an alumnus in your area. Linda suggested that you mail your CV to the alumnus a night before so that he has a rough idea about your background. Also, the alumnus would evaluate you on three basic points:

Would he be willing to hire you? Would he want to work with you ? (can be a job kind of interview)

Would he want to go to school with you? or What value would you add to the classroom? As they say in Business Schools, ” you learn more from your class mates than you learn from your teachers.”

Would they want you to wear the Columbia Blue?

10. It is best to visit the school before you decide to submit your application. You would get an opportunity to sit in the class, and talk to current students- this would give a clear idea about the culture and the environment that you would be a part of for next two years. Don’t visit the school during Christmas Holidays, Jewish holidays or during the exam term.

11. You would be eligible for fellowships even if you are applying as a Early Decision Candidate but would not be notified until the 6 January, 2010 deadline. Regular candidates must also apply by 6th January deadline 2010 of they want to considered for the fellowship.

12. You cannot get a loan if you don’t have a US cosigner. Most international students rely on family funds, personal savings, government or company sponsorships and/or loans secured in their home countries.

13. The chances of getting scholarships or fellowships are bleak.

14. If you are married and planning to take your spouse along with you, CBS has just one club called Columbia Better Halves. Can’t say if it is a very active club but they do have one at their campus. If your spouse can get a work permit, New York provides you with umpteen opportunities.

15. There was only one alumni present at the session from the 71 batch. He had more to talk to talk about his varied work experience than what he gained from Columbia Business School or why should people go to CBS. He claimed that the 7 out of 9 companies that he had worked with, had alumni from CBS. One more alumnus joined in after the session ended.

16. CBS takes a lot of pride in its Executives in Residence programme. If you are a senior executive and are planning to go back to school, this one is for you.

Overall it was good session. I gained a lot of insight about CBS. I have tried to cover almost all the points in my post but if you have some questions to ask, you can post them in the comments section. I will try to answer.

Those who cannot make school visits, these information sessions are a great way to get insight into various Business Schools. Since a lot of you would still be confused about picking up schools, there is no better way than attending these sessions to get your doubts cleared. You would be able to determine whether you make a good ‘fit’ for the school or not. Would you like to be a part of larger class(Harvard/ Wharton) or a tight knit community (Stanford, Tuck) ? Would you like flexible curriculum(Chicago Booth) or a fixed one (Harvard)? DO you want a more international environment (INSEAD)? Do you want to take a break from big city and study in small town or vice versa? For people who cannot visit schools or do not have a direct access to an alumni in their area, these events give a great opportunity to interact directly with the admission staff members, alumni or current students.

This whole month Business Schools would be visiting various countries across the world. In most cases, not only you would get to visit someone from the admissions staff , you would also get an opportunity to meet alumni and current students.

Some tips when you are visiting info sessions.

1. Don’t ask questions that are already mentioned in the brochure/website. Most obvious ones are - What is the average GMAT score of the current class? Grrr…Is GMAT the only factor used to judge candidates? -School websites scream that it is not.

2.If you are a prospective candidate and are thinking of meeting the admissions staff in person, it is best to be dressed in semi formal-formal attire.

3. Some of the good questions on the list could be :

Why did you choose this school over this school?

How does the visiting faculty at school operates?

What is the typical day of a student at your school? (You might find his info on some of the websites)

How involved is career service office with students?

Can a candidate opt not to live in the campus? If yes, then what are the possibilities available?

If you are a married candidate, what are the opportunities available on campus for your partner?

Here is the list of schools visiting India. The main visitors on TotlaGadha GMAT are from India and USA, but a lot of people visit TotalGadha GMAT from other countries as well, so I would be adding the main link of the events. You can visit those links to check the schedule of schools in your area.

Apply early

As always, the Cambridge MBA Admissions team advises the early submission of completed applications. This is particularly important if you are going to be reliant on scholarships for funding as many of these have early deadlines. An early application also gives greater flexibility on interview scheduling (although we do prefer you to attend interview in Cambridge on the dates detailed above) and assists with the college placement process and other enrolment administration.
Compare to is used to stress the resemblance.

He compared her to a summer day. (two unlike things- ‘her’ and ’summer day’ )

Scientists sometimes compare the human brain to a computer. (two unlike things- ‘human brain’ and ‘computer’.

Compared with : When you want to show similarities or differences between show two like things.
Compare with can be used to show either similarity or difference but is usually used to stress the difference.

The police compared the forged signature with the original. (two like things- two signatures)

The committee will have to compare the Senate’s version of the bill with the version that was passed by the House. (comparison between two like things- two bills)

Usage note from Dictionary.Com

The traditional rule about which preposition to use after compare states that compare should be followed by to when it points out likenesses or similarities between two apparently dissimilar persons or things: She compared his handwriting to knotted string.

Compare should be followed by with, the rule says, when it points out similarities or differences between two entities of the same general class: The critic compared the paintings in the exhibit with magazine photographs. This rule is by no means always observed, however, even in formal speech and writing. The usual practice is to employ to for likenesses between members of different classes: A language may be compared to a living organism.

But when the comparison is between members of the same category, both to and with are used: The article compares the Chicago of today with (or to) the Chicago of the 1890s. Following the past participle compared, either to or with is used regardless of whether differences or similarities are stressed or whether the things compared belong to the same or different classes: Compared with (or to) the streets of 18th-century London, New York’s streets are models of cleanliness and order.

Now attempt the following quiz :
