When customizing you wordpress theme first thing I would recommend is to make a copy of another theme and change the style.css. For more info refer to WordPress Theme Development

Here’s what you need to do to create your wordpress portfolio

Register your own domain name. I recommend using a reputable host like godaddy.com
Install Wordpress. Most reputable hosts have an interface such as “Install Applications” which you can use to install Wordpress.
Buy a portfolio wordpress theme. I recommend buying a wordpress theme from themeforest.net.
Gather together samples for your portfolio. You might need to crop your samples
