Divya Disha rescues 96 children in September 2011. Bala Bandhu- a project of Divya Disha supported by RVM, AP is a programme for rescue and rehabilitation of runaway children , Street children, missing children and Urban deprived children. The Bala bandhu project is operational in Hyderabad, Mahbubnagar , Medak and Srikakulam Districts of Andhra Pradesh. This month we have rescued 96 children of which 54 are boys and 42 are girls. We are thankful for the Govt Railway police officials of all the support extended to us.

Divya disha ,Bala bandhu and childline in collaboration with Labour dept , Govt railway police and Sarva shisha abhyan rescued 15 children from various parts of India who were being brought to hyderabad to work in the labour market of the city.The children are presently put in a hostel , and various legalities initiated.

Visit Of Ms Jhansi

Ms Jhansi, a film artist and TV Anchor visited our home and participated in the Independence Day celebration at Uppal. The children were fascinated and thrilled by her presence; it was a great experience for every one, and the children loved it, and cheered her as she sang some songs. She spent some time with children, conducted a small game and joined children for lunch.

There was Independence Day Celebration on the 15 August, 2009 at our home in Uppal. The flag was hoisted by Shri Kismatkumar, IAS, Director, JJ Department & Smt. Sudha Murali, Child Protection Officer, UNICEF.

The other members present were Ms Shama Afroz, Programme Officer, Kusuma Trust, Mr Michael Monteiro, Vice President, Divya Disha and Mr Isidore Phillips.

There was March-past by children dressed in colorful attire followed by a cultural programme by the children. Mr Isidore Phillips, Director, Divya Disha welcomed all the guests and introduced them to the children, staff and the volunteers present.

Ms Shama Afroz, the programme officer, Kusuma Trust wished all the children a very happy independence day, and Smt. Sudha Murali appreciated Divya Disha for their commitment in responding to issues of children, she recalled her visit to the home 10 years ago, affirmed and motivated children to make the best of what is provided in the home and grow as responsible citizens of our country.

Shri Kismat Kumar IAS, Director JJ Department was the chief guest, who expressed his happiness to meet the children, and told a short incident in Mahatma Gandhi’s life, the moral of the story is that Change begins with oneself. Hence, he motivated that children imitate and remember Gandhiji while celebrating this day.

The cultural programme continued, followed snacks and lunch, there was prize distribution by the GE volunteers who had earlier conducted some competitions for children. It was a memorable experience and children had a gala time.

CHAHA

CHAHA means a wish in Hindi launched in 2007 with support from Global Fund. This child centered, community based care and support programme aims to reduce HIV related morbidity and mortality in children and in adults, and addressing the impact of HIV, through right based approach, it builds the capacity of the community to take action and to demand and access various government progammes.

Divya Disha is the implementing agency responding to children affected and infected by HIV/AIDS in 23 mandals of Rangareddy District in Andhra Pradesh from July 2007. This programme is supported by Alliance India and the Technical support is by LEPRA society.

The services offered are as follows:

· Health and medical care – increase access to health and medical care including primary health care, immunization, early identification of HIV status for children and treatment and follow up for ART.

· Supplementary Nutrition support – includes nutrition demonstration, counseling and nutritional supplements to children infected and affected by HIV.

· Educational support – includes enrolment in formal and non formal schools. Support in school supplies if required tuition to all age groups and linkages of skill building or vocational training for children more than 14 years of age.

· Psychosocial support –within the programme, periodic need based counseling is provided by trained counselors to children and families through one to one interactions and home visits.

· Income Generation – activities have been made an important part of the CHAHA intervention to help affected families to become economically independent.

· Household support – in emergency situations, the household support is provided to the families which include one or more of these – travel to hospital, funeral expenses, diagnosis, expenses on medicines, clothes, grocery and other emergency supplies.

Divya Disha has been able to reach out to 404 children both infected and affected till date, and also have built capacities of 200 families in Rangareddy district.

There has also been regular sensitization meetings with key stakeholders – the youth groups, self help groups, village elders group, the elected leaders of the area like the surpanch, Mandal Parishad president etc.

Apart from the above, there has been advocacy meetings and networking with the community, various line departments of women and child welfare department, education department, health department, ICTC’s, PPTCT’s and the local dispensaries and private clinics and positive people networks and the local NGOs.

There are also children support groups formed, this group consists of both children infected and affected other children, this group meets twice a month, and there regular activities like the life skill education programme, an outing, picnic, competitions in drawing, painting, singing, dancing etc.

We celebrate all the important occasions like the children’s day, Women’s day, World AIDs Orphans day, World AIDS Day and all the National celebrations and the local festivals.

Celebrating our Journey

Divya Disha completes 22 years of its journey, on 27 May, 2009. We celebrate the fact that it has been a long journey, for so much has happened, and there have been so many changes, as an organisation we look back with gratitude for what has been, for all the people who have accompanied us in this journey, which has been a meaningful experience for each of us.

Today I am happy and thankful that I have been apart of this organisation, and have grown as a person, I have wonderful memories in this organisation, I had found very good friends here, and I still recall how we came together as friends, sharing our own problems and solving them, understanding ourselves and searching for meaning in life. Thus realising the fact that meaning comes only when we reach out to others, thus began our journey 21 years ago, when I look back, there is so much to be thankful for.

We have been responding to every situation that challenged us to move from one area of work to another beginning with child rights, street children, Institutions, HIV AIDS, Migrant children, Victims of Domestic Violence and thus expanding ourselves in other districts of AP.

We have been constantly changing, and redefining ourselves in responding to the need of the hour, and while doing so we also have been affirmed, apprecited by a lot of friends, well wishers and our families. We would not have been able to accomplish without the support of you my friends, and so I take this opportunity on behalf of Divya Disha to thank all our families, friends, partners, colloborators, donors, volunteers for the supporting us, accompanying us in our journey and for believing and trusting in us.

We look forward to your continual support and guidance.

Akshara Disha - Doorstep Schools

We have long been concerned about the children of construction workers and young people working on construction sites.

Construction workers are usually migrants, very mobile - moving in search of employment from one site to another or even from one town/city to another. or because of drought. Therefore, their children do not go to school, and live at the construction sites. They help their parents in the construction work - mixing, water curing, centering, plastering. Often they are used to run errands, bring cigarettes, beedies, paan, ghutka, liquor etc. The girls play 'little mothers; – taking care of siblings. While the parents are at work, some children do the household tasks like cooking, cleaning, washing, etc.

Since the parents have not been to school, they often do not understand the importance of sending their children to school. However, even if they are interested, either there are no schools nearby or their constant movement prevents them from getting admission.

Our concern for these children and young people led us to do a sample study in the Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts. We found:

a. Children involved in the construction site are in the age group of 0-5 years, 5-14 years and 15-18 years of age.

b. The majority of the children are in the age group of 6-9 years ( comprising approximately 44% of the total children)/

c. Most of the children hail from the following places, Mahaboobnagar, Ongole, Srikakulam, Nalgonda, Guntur, Medak, Ranga Reddy district, Adilabad Karimnagar and Nizambad.

In order to intervene in a sensitive manner there was a need to interact with the builders, parents, masons, children, apartment owners, etc so that we could mobilize these children and motivate them to attend the Door Step schools we set up.

We now have 50 Door Step schools in four mandals of the Rangareddy District - Hayathnagar; Ghatkesar; Keesara and Uppal catering to approximately 1500 children.
