I just want to jot down a quick post on a question that seems to be keep cropping up. It usually stems from new web sites who are approached by third party vendors or simply through owners/webmasters doing some quick research.

The question revolves around submitting your web site to the search engines. Should you do it and does it help?

The answer is no on both accounts.

No, you NEVER EVER want to hire someone to do this. They may make the claim that they'll submit your new web site to over 300+ web search engines. That's all fine and dandy if there were 300 worthy engines. In actuality there is ONE and maybe THREE. That's Google and Yahoo and Bing (MSN). Apart from that, unless you're looking at other languages/countries, that's the big three.

Second, you don't really need to SUBMIT to them since they've come along far enough with technology to find your web site on their own. They'll need help, however, the help they need can easily be produced using two strategies.

The first, if you have a blog, ensure you have the Google site you can ping and then after your first post Google will know about your web site, will come and spider you, and you're done.

The second point is one of the most important aspects of your web site: getting web links. One good web link will do the job to help Google find you and also encourage them to keep visiting after initial contact.

So don't fall for any of the 'submit to search engine' scams out there. Also, don't waste your time submitting yourself. Do spend time getting links and writing new content in your blog.

The emergence of the social networking tool Twitter, which enables users to post snippets of up to 160 characters per post (tweet), has raised some questions on its impact on the SEO industry. Frankly, I think this is the wrong question to ask. Twitter has only a distant and indirect relation to SEO.

However, it has a HUGE impact to the overall web marketing picture.

On one hand you can develop a following of interested, lurking, and completely useless followers. Some may be induced to visit your web site through your tweets, some may even link to you. That's the indirect benefit to your SEO endeavors. But given the nature of Twitter, this type of tactic doesn't fit within the ethos of network. Let me explain.

Twitter works just as any network works--those who are interesting and have value to add are worthy to pay attention to. If you simply spout out API driven ads or self-promote non-stop, you do not have a value to add and thus your followers list will reflect that same quality.

However, if you are truly contributing to your industry, you have interesting and not-self promoting tweets, you may find yourself developing a list of followers who are like-minded and more prone to RT (re-tweet) and pay attention to your content.

Twitter enables users to create a new network where they couldn't, to connect with individuals they never would have without the outlet. But just like any other network, you have to use it properly. You'll find that if you stay within the grounds of offering value to potential followers, use some beneficial Twitter lingo (like hash tags which is a type of filing system that help users find the latest trends around a topic or area), and you may be able to capitalize on the Twitter train.

You've installed WordPress for the first time, lined up your theme and have added a few wordpress plugins. Now you have to write some posts and you ask the questions, "is there a system I should employ while writing?"

The answer is 'yes' and 'no'. No you shouldn't change your writing style or purpose for the sake of search engines or Wordpress. Yes, there are are some best practices you need to follow when writing which will help maintain clarity and popularity. So pay attention to the following suggestions, they'll go a long way to help increase visibility and visitors.

Title Tags

The single most important element that will help your visitors find your content is going to be your post title. Think of something that's not too short, that's relevant, that's appealing and attention grabbing, and also contains relevant keywords to your content. Avoid punctuation like commas, quotes, or periods. (You don't require a full stop at the end of your title.)

For example, rather than a title: I like Wordpress

I'd write something like: Distinct SEO's Top 10 Reasons We Love Wordpress

You'll notice you just clicked the 'more' button to read the rest of this post. That's by design. You'll see in console while writing new blog posts a button called 'more'. It inserts the code <!--more--> wherever you insert it that will break the page and make people click from the homepage into the actually post page.

This action prevents duplicate content from showing up in the search engines (duplicate content is undesirable). You don't want to feature content in a full version on both the index page AND the individual post page.

Selecting One Category

Every post has a category to be filed under. If you don't manually select a category then the default category will be selected for you. Generally you'll want to remember to put the post in the right category since the default category is usually the irrelevant 'Uncategoried' option. Remember the duplicate content issues from above? The same holds true here, we only want to pick ONE category because to put it in two will put the same content in two separate locations.

Additional Media

Wordpress is powerful enough to host and/or house additional content that will complement your written words. Videos, audio, and images can be inserted and go a long way to attract and retain readership.

Headings

If your article naturally flows into sub-headings then use the<h1> to <h6> tags. So primary headers would look something like his <h1>Primary Header</h1> and secondary ones <h2>Secondary</h2> all the way down to six (you can go down more but that would be a weird page of sub headings).

You'll have to insert these tags in the HTML view (rather than the Visual view) and the result should be something like this:

I'm an H2 Header

HTML v. Visual View

Speaking of view, you have two options when writing new posts, the 'Visual' and 'HTML' views. I choose HTML because it reduces the amount of unnecessary HTML that might sneak its way into the post. For example, if you're copying and pasting from Word or the web, you'll want to do that directly into the HTML view. If not, all the styles and funny things that are part of the code will transfer to your post.

Generally this isn't a huge issue, but it can lead to some design headaches.

Post Tags

One way to help you attract more attention is to insert 'post tags' seen at the right of your screen. Tags are 1-2 words that describe what you're writing. Post tags for this post would be something like: wordpress writing, writing blog posts.

This component is not necessary to successfully submit a new article.

Once you're done with your article and you've followed the steps listed above you can click PUBLISH to the right. The neat thing about Wordpress is you can delay publishing to a time in the future by clicking 'edit' by the Publish row to the upper right.

I will continually add new insights here, but for now these are the crucial aspects to help you manage your blog posting. Happy blogging!

*We've updated this post on September 30th with our tools and plugins for your benefit.*

Wordpress is probably the easiest and most malleable blog tool on the web that functions on Apache. Although it doesn't permit complete customization, it does provide a solid blogging tool with many additions to keep you're information and SEO needs satisfied.

We don't use many plugins, but over the years Distinct SEO has learned a few things through trials and tribulations. Here is a list of some of the plugins we use ideal for building a community and optimizing wordpress blogs.

Top Wordpress Plugins for Search Engine Optimization

Akismet
Akismet checks your comments against the their web service for spam. Originally I never used the services, but after my blogs became popular I got the API key and turned it on. So far it has solved the blatant spam junk from hitting my comments.
ALL in one SEO

We haven't been fans for SEO plugins since you can't control them all. We finall opted to try ALL-in-one-SEO plugin and mostly like what it does. I've had to jump in and delete a few lines from the header deep within the code that I didn't like and what couldn't be controlled from the SEO plugin admin panel. Apart from that, it does improve your titles and help noindex your tags and archive pages.

Custom Query String

With this tool you can change the number of posts displayed when viewing different archive pages including the home page. That means I can dictate the number of posts per page for feed, comments, archive, categories, home, and more pages.

Peter's Custom Anti-Spam

Akismet does the job, but before I had this installed. It provides added protection against spambots. It prevents a number of bots from posting in the comment section. Initially this plugin prevented trackbacks but the update has solved this bug.

SimpleTags

This plugin permits each post to have unique lists of Technorati tags. You have to insert the tags manually which is sometimes a drag cause I forget to do it.

WP Tags to Technorati

I dropped Simple Tags and went for a more efficient plugin to display Technorati tags in your post. The only downside is that it automatically puts the tag in the footer of the post. Not a huge deal though.

Subscribe To Comments

This is a good way to give people a chance (to remind them to come back) to return to your blog when somebody responds to a comment they've made.

RSS Footer

This plugin enables you to put in a text footer at the bottom of your posts via the RSS feed. That means those who duplicate your content will be using a couple of links on each posts (with specific anchor text) to help you generate some additional web links.

Text Control

Get rid of special characters within the body of your text. Convert " into " and not &@#$ (or whatever it is.) This ensures there are no keywords mucked up with special characters. (This doesn't help in the titles though.)

Wordpress Mobile Plugin

One thing with Wordpress is you can extend your reach to different audiences easily. This plugin enables you to facilitate mobile visitors. A mobile friendly version of your blog displays. The best part, you can get you own Admob advertiser number and start making money from the ads (since the developer included Admob within the plugin).

I don't like this plugin anymore. Most mobile browsers have enough power to view the full page. This plugin started entering the index too which I didn't appreciated.

WP Cache

We don't use WP cache often, only when traffic climbs, but this plugin is supposed to return a cache version of your page instead of calling the server each time.

WP Navi - Pagination

Heres is a solution for pagination on your blogs. Trying to get some pages out of the supplementals? Well this will help pass Page Rank from your homepage to some deeper archive pages. Read the full instructions on how to apply.

Feeburner FeedSmith

Are you signed up at Feedburner? You should be because it offers a wide array of analytics information about your feed subscribers. This plugin enables you to maintain your own feed on your own web site, redirecting to your feedburner feed rather than forcing you to replace it with your own....

Popularity Contest

This is a good way to give people an idea of what's popular on your blog and hopefully encourage them to stick around and read some more. A good tool to build a sense of community.

Enforce www. preference

Although you can do the same thing with .htaccess, many people do not have the skill to edit the file safely. This ensures that not only will your blog redirect http:// to http://www., but index.php redirects to /.

Text Pattern

Unfortunately, we hit a major snag with our blog one day. On one site we moved a forum to a subfolder from the index, and the blog to the index. This caused problems. All protected directories were being re-directed to the 404 Wordpress error page. This was a major pain in the butt and no matter who we chatted with, no amount of .htaccess monkeying could fix the problems. All our Apache gurus couldn't find a fix, but after some careful searching we did find one, that was actually very simple. Visit TextPattern for more details.

WordPress Database Backup

On-demand backup of your WordPress database. easy to install, easy to use if you're permission are right. This comes with the basic wordpress install.

WordPress Adsense Deluxe

Used to incorporate adsense (or any ad type) within each blog post. However, it is now deprecated so use at your own risk.

This was a rundown of the plugins we use on most of our blogs. There are a few more we use for individual blogs like Youtube, Twitter, and picture plugins for specific web sites. Otherwise, the key ones used above are noted.

If you have trouble just leave a comment and I'll send the link to you. Hope this helps you run a successful blog in the future!

Updated from the original post in May 7th, 2007.

Some critics have noted consumers are growing dissatisfied with the SEO industry due to the lack of accountability (with respect to results) and lack of transparency (with respect to what is actually completed for web sites). It's true, nearly anybody regardless of qualifications can figure out on-page SEO (changes made to your web site) and create an online firm to start garnering consultation dollars. The problem is the absence of SEO standard for training or governing body policing rogue consultants means the chance of 'pulling the wool' over the eyes of unsuspecting consumers grows.

Before we move forward here is a little bit of context. An article called, "A “Market for Lemons”, a Nobel Prize, and Snake Oil SEO" from John Andrews argued for the increase in transparency for an industry where the consultant holds an unfair advantage in service negotiations because of their unique knowledge of the SEO industry that the customer does not have.

Aaron Wall comments in his blog post "Why Selling Selling SEO Services is a Bad Business Model", by adding some more reasons why selling SEO services is a bad business model.

While I agree with both writers and their take on the SEO business models especially when it comes to contractual discussions, I think they failed to address some key activities that separate the 'snakes' from the pros. How then should legitimate SEO's approach their trade?

Why SEO/SEM is Neither Sales nor Product Focused

A marketing mentor of mine pushed the following:

"Sales focused activities move products or services. Marketing focused activities move customers and turn them into lifelong clients. Nobody wants to be 'sold to'. We want to be courted, to be romanced. Selling focuses on the needs of the seller; marketing on the needs of the buyer."

Are you aimlessly pushing your SEO product or service? Sounds like you're more concerned with showing the prospective client what you're all about rather than showing how you can benefit their needs. One creates high paying, returning, and referencing clients. The other is usually the focus of a poorly planned business model which reflects what kind of organization operates behind the web design facade.

The first exposure online is obviously your web site. What prospective clients learn and feel about your organization is dependent on what type of message you try to communicate. What message you try to communicate on your web page/site is dependent on the nature of your business plan around your organization.

Search engine optimization and search engine marketing consultation is a marketing based venture interested in meeting the needs of a client. SEO and SEM are not product or service oriented. The difference between the two is the difference between the Rolls Royce dealer and the sleazy used car lot; the difference between breakfast at Tiffany's and 7-Eleven. The first meets the needs of the client, the other is a vain attempt to push customers into an inferior party.

Your goal of meeting the growing expectation for greater transparency in the SEO industry begins by becoming market oriented rather than product or service oriented. If you can change the ethos of your business model to reflect the needs of the clients, to court and romance the prospects into a relationship, then you can create the foundation for a strong online SEO firm.

Chicken or the Budget? What Comes First?

**Originally posted on Mar 12, 2007**

I recently engaged in a spirited discussion about business strategy and planning with some posters at SEOChat. Basically, I was challenging the position on how to go about creating SEO budgets. My basic premise was that budgets come out of plans, and not the other way around. Here is some key highlites to help you create the right goals for the right budget and not the other way around.

SEO Plans Lead to SEO Budgets

I am going to argue that it is not in the best interest for your company to just throw money at a project aimlessly. Do we agree so far? So how should one go about investing in search engine optimization or web marketing alternatives (i.e. social media marketing).

You FIRST go through a planning stage, a time to articulate goals and objectives. After this process you THEN create a budget OUT OF the goals you've made. At this point you will find out if have the cash to meet the budget you will require to meet your goals. If you can't, then you turn around and repeat the process until you have adjusted your goals to coincide with a budget that you can afford. (Goals are measurable and attainable items within the short run. The ambitious 'rule the market!' idea is a vision and need not be attainable within a short period of time.)

This is how you come up with the right budget for your SEO project, not the other way around. Don't start by taking marketing dollars and throwing it blindly at ideas or 'trial runs'. That's why some many people loose so much cash in marketing, they have zero clue what they're doing because they don't have a plan or goals.

DON'T WORK BACKWARDS! Save yourself the time and reward yourself with coherent goal setting by walking straight forwards and not backwards. In a planning process the steps in order go:

Vision
Objectives
Goals (measurable and attainable in the short run)
Strategies (built around distinct capabilities and competitive advantages)
Tactics
Budget

Too many people try to start at tactics the move to budget--no wonder your marketing dollar is lost in the wind. The fact is, plans start with objectives and budgets fall out of plans.

When you have defined the budget through this planning process then you work your way in reverse through the same steps until you have met your vision. Skipping these steps is like putting a bullet through your car tire. You may (or may not) reach your destination, and if even you do, you're late (but your competitors aren't).

Sure, you need to figure out some cost plans before you can articulate a budget, that's all fine and dandy, but that doesn't come before a planning process. You don't get quotes first, and then go, 'ok, what am I going to remodel and what do I want it to look like?' Maybe it's a fact finding mission, but you still need your clear objectives before embarking on your web marketing missions.

Answer, none.

This question pops up on forums time in and time again. You'd think with so many asking the same question people would see the same answers and stop asking, but alas, they don't.

Before I go further let me state unequivocally that domain names are strictly for branding purposes only. That doesn't ignore them since you don't have a brand because branding is the single most important element online for your business.

So why do people still think keywords in the domain name will rank them higher?

I posted this article on the value of keywords in your urls, essentially the conclusion was 'maybe' keywords were used as a factor to rank for longtail (uncompetitive) keyword terms, but overall their contribution was small.

The same goes for domains. Too often new webmasters want to get the 'edge' over the competition and they think one of the hundreds of small SEO tactics will give them the edge. It's true that the combination of the countless tiny SEO things one could do to a web site may accumulate over time, but the fact remains, the majority of your ranking success is dependent on content and links. That's only TWO things.

Slipping a keyword in your domain for the purpose of SEO is the wrong question to ask. Remember at the start I mentioned that the domain was strictly a branding issue? If you have a keyword in your domain because it's part of the brand then minor bonus. Chances are you want something short, memorable, and something you've spent some time working and developing to be your brand name (and domain name).

Nike will opt for www.nike.com and not www.nike-shoes-shirts.com. What benefit could the second option possibly have? In fact it probably has a negative consequence as it diminishes the perceived trust of the web site (so many dashes makes it look shady).

So yes, the KW in the domain may be noticed, but it's overall value is so minuscule and the need to respect your brand so major, that you have to ignore domain name keywords if they aren't part of your brand. If you're a company or start up, or somebody trying to make a quick buck by ripping off someone else's idea, then I STILL don't recommend getting a domain with a keyword stuck somewhere in it.

The reason is twofold and I'll try give you an example to help.

1) The value of KW's in domain names is like the counting a single grain of sand on a beach and calling it 'the beach'.

2) The value of KW's in a domain that circumvent the necessity of a clear brand is like driving a car in first gear on the highway. Sure you'll be moving, but not very fast--your speed (growth) will forever be stuck in first gear.

Now you should be asking yourself what elements should you paying attention to? Well after you have a nice, clear, concise design, brand, and content, you should focus on these two main elements of SEO: CONTENT and LINKS.

1) CONTENT: Hopefully you have the capability and scenario where you can regularly update new content to your web site that is related to your theme/industry and is of interest to your target market. All too often people think their content is high quality. But that's like parents thinking their baby is the most beautiful in the world. It's actually quite rare that you'll be creating 'GREAT' and 'HIGH QUALITY' content on your own.

2) The content is to give people something to grasp and LINK to. LINKS: Incoming, one-way, related, and high quality (from reputable and established web sites) web links make or break a web site. You need content to support it, but one mediocre link will forever outweigh any benefit a keyword in the domain name will offer.

Content and links are the two massive aspects that combine to help your rank. Think of links as the engine in your car, content as the gas, and the keyword in your domain as the decal on your window. What two items do you think help the car move? All the minor SEO aspects are the stupid unnecessary gadgets in your car, but the core elements are the things you want to focus on. Without them your stuck in the driveway as the competitors blow by on the highway.

In this post a couple of years back, we wrote how Yahoo! was phasing out support for its major directory. Truth be told, there was once a time in search engine marketing where you could submit to 1000's of directories and reap some marginal benefit. You could also pay a couple of thousand to a handful of major web directories to get some quality one way links.

The way of the web directory is quickly eroding with the advent of real time search functions in Twitter and other social media web sites. No point for a static collection of web sites that do not necessary reflect any type of qualitative score.

So are there any directories worthwhile to submit and pay?

The short answer is no. The long answer is no. MAYBE there is 1-4 paid directories worthwhile, BOTW and Business.com being half of them. I see the benefit less and less as time goes on though so the 299, or however much it is with a coupon to submit, may be better of spent on one great piece of content for your web site.

The 1000 directories that your Indian SEO submits to is a waste of 20 bucks (that's how much the going rate is now, if you're paying more you got hosed).

HOWEVER, I would like to point out there is still a valuable contribution to search and rankings for local and niche directories.

That is, if you are in a small niche, or targeted niche, and there is a nice powerful directory in your field, it may be worth submitting and getting a link. I would make the decision based on cost, appeal (visual), and perceived traffic. Brand new directories should be free, ones you have a suspicion they'll generate traffic, try it out.

Apart from local directories (maybe city or county specific) and targeted niche (fishing may be one, but fly fishing directories is better,) you will be better off spending your energy elsewhere.

One of the methods of analysing your Long Tail for SEO applications (or any other function) is to use the online tool 'HitTail'. We are pleased to present a guest write GaryTheScubaGuy, who will offer his thoughts in rebuttal to my article on Long-Tail Criticims. Gary offers a slant to marketing and pay-per-click uses of Long Tail that I'm sure you'll find useful and insightful.

(HitTail now offers a paid service with many more features helping you sift through your keyword data. This review does not include the new features.)

Without further delay, here's Gary....

Being asked to write an article describing the Long Tail software called HitTail, I immediately started making a list of what I wanted to say that I haven't already said on a dozen forums. That being fairly difficult, I decided for the first time, I will actually show snapshots of the results that have excited me over the last few months.

Let me first explain that I do not use HitTail for its original intention, which is to find the Long Tail keywords and keyword phrases that end-users search for when the find your site. You then take these phrases and build it into your content on your site, blog or other published page, in order to attract more traffic. HitTail is no longer free, and the data is used to get in the first version you could get for free in Analytics (Google.)

I must admit I am the consummate 'non-reader' of instructions. I could be on a bomb squad and avoid reading the instructions on exactly how to disarm it. So in short, I threw the code up on my site after reading the first few lines of what it did.

The results came in (on this particular website I get 5000-6000 uniques a day) and I saw the information it gave, and my next thought was that it would make sense to take these 4,5,6 and 7 word phrases and dump them in an Adwords campaign to see if I could pick up some cheap traffic. At this stage of the game Adwords had not launched their PPC algorithm yet.

HitTail at this point did not have the excel export feature, the rank, or the ability to filter for each search engine. I spent hours going through the process that now takes a matter of seconds to do. (Thanks to Mike Levin of Connors Communications, all I did was email him and speak with him on the phone about what I was using it for and they added the excel export feature practically overnight.) Long story short, after the excel export was added, I took 2000 keyword and keyword phrases at a time and added Adwords Adgroups. Around 10,000 of them. I set the bid at .03 and sat back and watched. I gradually weeded out non-performers and made many adjustments, like I had on all the other regular campaigns I was running. My destination page was the same, the homepage. ( I do not recommend doing this unless you have an established CTR and decent conversion rate because this method may slightly reduce your CTR and conversion, thereby affecting positioning in the PPC SERP’s, although I have not experienced any ranking loss whatsoever.)

Let me say before I show you snapshots of my campaigns, what tools I use for these campaigns.

1. HitTail
2. Google Analytics
3. Microsoft Excel
4. Word Tracker
5. Google Keyword Tool
6. Microsoft Access

The Long-Tail Process

This campaign is 60k+ keywords at times, and each consistently stays at #1 in PPC on all of them for a fraction of what this client used to pay...even for extremely competitive terms (150m-300m results).I usually take 30-45 days rebuilding a new client's site content, keyword density, and the basic SEO stuff. Then I concatenate the pages with their perspective keywords, also applying WordTracker, the Google Keyword Tool, and my HitTail results, creating a database with Access, and finally matching everything up with their correct pages. Of course a percentage of these do not match the content of any page, so I send those to the homepage.

After that I monitor the stats and analytics every couple hours.

From there (45 days) I start dropping off non-performing (remember, NON, not LOW) keywords. Some will make the mistake of eliminating keywords based on this number (CTR) being low, but when examined more closely you'll see that even though it only had a .02% CTR, it had 47,800 impressions and 22 clicks. This is still traffic. And as far as I can see I haven't found that it affected the overall positioning at all.

From here I continue to use Hit Tail about every 2 weeks or so, then it’s just a lot of analytics and data mining. Refine. Perfect. Then Rinse and Repeat.

Pretty difficult eh?

Well… I didn't give away all my secrets.

The Snapshots

This is a snapshot of the campaign I am referencing above. It represents the top 5 Adwords campaigns for this client. Notice the start dates.

The most significant numbers are the Avg. CPC, the massively lower cost (and these are British Sterling), the fact that the conversion is more than double, and the most significant difference being the overall conversion cost… That's a conversion cost 65% reduction.

Here is a snapshot of the current MTD:

Keep in mind that the new according to the Official Google Adwords Blog, the newly released Landing Page Quality Update was released the month previous this report.

The CTR has dropped from 3.32% to 2.67%, but the CPC has dropped, the Conversion Rate has increased, the Cost per Conversion has been lowered.

Here is a snapshot of the overall numbers on all campaigns (August) :

Here is a snapshot of the overall numbers on all campaigns (Alltime) :

The key numbers here are the CTR which was only reduced from 3.18% (alltime) to 2.94% (this month). Of course management of all the other campaigns skewed this slightly. More significant is the CPC was reduced .03. This doesn't seem like much, but if the Alltime numbers were the same as this month, this campaign would have saved this company £45,368 or close to $90,000 US.

Also significant are the Conversion Rate is up 58% and the Cost per Conversion down 69%.

I have experienced no loss in the ranking position of any of these keywords. Of course there are many things to consider when running an Adwords campaign, and what the optimal setting are, but that varies from client-to-client and is where professional PPC management comes in.
