As you might have come to expect, I have fallen off the wagon of posting with any sense of regularity. But here is some fruit from the labor that has been the main reason for my absence. Things are finally coming together after a year or so of working out the kinks to production. New track from yours truly. Plus check out some of the other new tracks I’ve posted from a live project that is just getting started on the Disco Horror soundcloud. Also for anyone in Portland: I will be DJing at Miracles Club’s monthly party Ecstasy on August 27 at Valentine’s!

Midnight Magic – Beam Me Up (Jacques Renault Remix) // Permanent Vacation

Midnight Magic’s might be the first legitimate disco band of our generation. The band is a large group, some of whom have been involved in Hercules & Love Affair and other DFA projects. Their track “Beam Me Up” is not synth-driven nudisco or a funky disco sample looped under filters; it’s just a completely rad modern disco. House maestro Jacques Renault fleshes the instrumentals out and brings a greater emphasis on the piano. I’ve had it on repeat for months.

Simian Mobile Disco – Cruel Intentions (Maurice Fulton Remix) // Wichita

I first heard this track late in 2009 on an Aeroplane monthly chart mix, but it’s really a 2010 track for me. SMD haven’t done anything that I’ve been crazy about recently, but Maurice Fulton takes the track and turns it into the perfect mid-tempo poppy track to start the night off right. The drums are just organic enough to add some funk to the vocals and the synth lines. Perfection.

Chemical Brothers – Swoon (Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas Remix) // Parlophone

This was THE jam of the summer for me. Featured on several mixes, L&PT came out big with this and created a washy long epic using beautifully dreamy vocals from the original. Let’s be real, The Chemical Brothers haven’t been interesting since forever ago. Their work just seems kind of aimless and overworked, but the Scandinavian masters perform their magic and voila! You have the chuggy bassline and loose drumming typical of Prins Thomas worked with the lovely synthwork of Lindstrøm. I’ll say it again serious summer jam.

Space - Deliverance (Justus Khöncke’s Wild Pitch Mix) // Nang Records

Ok this track is truly genius. Released on some super obscure remix 12″, veteran German producer Justus Khöncke takes small vocal pieces from the original and spins them out over what might be one of the best 909 beats I’ve ever heard along with an incredible monophonic synth bassline. Riding washes of noise and filters with the resonance cranked up, the track is a raw testament to how a producer makes magic out of a couple machines. The pianos and spacey synths help too, but those drums, man, keep me entertained for the whole 9 minutes.

James Chance & The Contortions – Incorrigible (Liv Spencer and DJ Spun Mix) // Rong Music

Floor banging techno that the post-punk/no wave kids can get stoked on. DJ Spun and Liv Spencer (1/2 of House of House and Still Going) take the funkiness of James Chance and add an acid bassline to send a track by a man known for manic performances into levels of madness. The rest of the 12″ is super nice as well, with an edit of the original and a Version Mix by Brennan Green and Sal Principato.

Coyote – Moving (Still Going Remix) // International Feel Recordings

Another Liv Spencer project. International Feel was one of my favorites from this year and this release was amazing. I spent the a month playing the Coyote original, which is fantastic. Then I got hooked on this hypnotic anthemic house remix by Still Going that keeps building AND building. I have yet to hear this one on a big system, but I am waiting because when I do… prepare for a freak out.

Bubble Club – Morning Star (Soft Rocks Remix) // Bubble Club

Taking things slightly lighter is this pop perfection. While I loves me some 909, 707 can be just as fun, especially when it’s put in the hands of one of the UKs most inspired producing teams. They take an already beautiful poppy dance masterpiece (I already told you how Bubble Club was one of my favorite labels of the year) and interweave bouncy synth lines with pianos and strings to form some of the most tasteful feel good house I’ve ever heard.

Tiago – Rider (COS/MES Remix Bonus Beat C’s Edit) // Ene Tokyo

Tiago. This guy is showing up all over, and for good reason. His Cigana EP was probably my favorite edit release of 2010 and he’s also involved in the Gala Drop project on Golf Channel which is going to be receiving some major attention in the next year. COS/MES have dropped an album towards the end of the year on ESP Institute that is tropical deep house at it’s best. This release is pretty impossible to find as it was released in Japan on a new label called Ene Records based out of Tokyo, but I had the fortune of hearing it and this track is so many things. COS/MES send Tiago’s amazing original into the cosmic jungle and take it bigger and deeper. THEN some dude named Shinsuke Chida edits their remix into a 10 minute epic. I won’t post here because I’ve been asked not to, but here’s a rad video for a shorter version of the track.

Aeroplane vs. Friendly Fires vs. Flight Facilities- I Crave Paris // No Label

This was quite a year for Aeroplane. They released their highly anticipated album (and it blew) and then they broke up (bummer). But they came to the US several times and I saw them twice: first in the afternoon heat of a tent at Coachella and the other a sweaty Rhonda party in LA with Harvey. And I have to say that their saving grace are their mixes. They were great live, their chart mixes were great and now Stephen Fasano is continuing to release monthly mixes as The Magician. Then they came out with their BBC Essential Mix 500 which I probably should have put on the top mixes because I listened to it pretty nonstop for a month or so, but whatever, go find it if you haven’t heard. It’s pretty much an amazing collection of new and old italo/balearic/house/pop mixed extremely well and smack dab in the middle comes this mashup of the vocals of Flight Facilities “I Crave You” and the instrumentals of Aeroplane’s remix of Friendly Fires “Paris”. It comes in out of break-driven Aphex Twin track and rides you straight into “Don’t You Want Me Baby” and it’s fucking awesome.

Arp – The Past (Version By Studio) // Smalltown Supersound

Ok so then there’s Studio. You all should know by now how much I love these dudes, but their remixes had been a little lackluster over the last year (not bad but not up to par with their usual balearic dubby brilliance). Arp released an album this year that is pretty well done Eno, but as is usually the case, Studio had a different idea with their version. Just listen, I won’t put it into words. It’ll be the last taste I will leave in your mouth as I wrap up my summary posts of 2010.

It’s been a year of neglect, I know. I was bad about posting, but trust me it’s not because of laziness. I have some good things in store for all you devoted readers. Check out my soundcloud as well as I’m trying to put some of what I’ve been working on up there.

Lots of music from some of my faves and then lots of great stuff from new peepz. Making lists is pretty stressful for me and I didn’t wanna get into making top 10 lists cuz let’s be real, what’s so special about 10? So I made a list of my top 20, which was way easier and less exclusionary (even though there are still amazing tracks that I wanted to put on this list and just got lazy with). In no particular order, here are some of my favorite tracks from the year. They will be available for sampling until 1/11/11, then taken down. If you like what you hear, please go out and support the artists by purchasing their music.

Lindstrøm & Christabelle – Lovesick // Smalltown Supersound

A good way to start is with one of my tried and true favorite collaborations. Lindstrøm’s work with Christabelle has kept my attention over the years, beginning with “Music in my Mind” all the way back in 2003. The following seven years were filled with a smattering of singles released on 12″s. The incredible cover of Vangelis’ “Let it Happen”, the MJ-infused Nordic spoken word of “Baby Can’t Stop” and the menacing percussive disco of “Let’s Practise”. The announcement of the full-length album in 2009 left me nervous that even the king of space disco might fall victim to the tragic theme with dance music albums of compiling edits of singles an hour long package. But once I put it on I was splendidly surprised. The album is without a doubt one of the best of the year, but for some reason I keep coming back to the impeccable balearic electro pop of “Lovesick”.

Twin Shadow – Slow // Terrible Records

Now for a newcomer. Twin Shadow is Brooklyn-based George Lewis, Jr.’s project whose debut album Forget has risen to the top of all the “hip” music charts. But I’ll say it definitely deserves all the attention it is getting. Melancholy beautiful new wave dream pop released in September so it’s still a fresh element to my winter soundtrack. Too many good tracks on the album, but the placement of this one in the sequence coupled with the chorus makes it the winner for me.

The Crystal Ark – The City Never Sleeps // DFA

I had the pleasure of meeting The Wizard himself this year and I must say that Gavin is a most excellent dude. 2010 marked the arrival of his latest project, The Crystal Ark, which could have easily become a small blip on DFA’s radar with the LCD explosion this year. But Gavin has successfully distilled the acid techno minimalism of his Black Meteoric Star, adding the sensuality of Viva Ruiz’s Brazillian vocals and his own bizarrely soulful wailing to craft perfectly sprawling organic world rave. Both of the project’s releases this year are incredible achievements for dance music and the project is just as stimulating live. The video, directed by Ruiz, is also fantastic.

Tensnake – Coma Cat // Permanent Vacation

This dude. This fucking dude. I mean, just when polished european disco house was beginning to feel a little stale and Aeroplane seemed to be losing their momentum (RIP), Marco Niemerski follows his incredible debut “In The End I Want You To Cry” with the Coma Cat EP. I can’t tell you how many personal dance freak-outs I have had to this track. Oh and the B-side is just as rad. Follow that with his superb In The House mix and this has definitely been the year of 20TENSNAKE, amirite? Ok I’ll calm down, but like that is pretty much how I feel at the peak of that crescendo during the first break in “Coma Cat”. This is what fun music is supposed tosound like.

DJ Nature – Win Lose And Dance // Golf Channel Recordings

Phil South’s Golf Channel Recordings should be no stranger by now, but they continue to be a vehicle for some of the most impeccable dance music of the underground scene. This year we were introduced to DJ Nature, most definitely not this dude www.djnature.com, but rather a transplant from the UK Milo Johnson who had ‘retired’ when he met South at one of his No Ordinary Monkey parties in Bushwick (see more on that and a great interview here). I missed the boat on Johnsons’ first few highly limited releases, but Golf Channel’s egalitarian repressing habits allowed me to secure the first over the summer. Perfect deep jazzy house on par with Theo Parrish at his most refined moments.

The Miracles Club – Church Song // Mexican Summer

One of two Portland acts on this list that have made frequent live appearances in the city over the past couple years, The Miracles Club is Honey Owens and Rafael Fauria’s overt exploration of hipster house. This year I truly fell in love with the unadulterated sounds of the 303 and the 909 that pervaded house music of the late 80s and most of the 90s in house and techno. Vamping piano mixed with the perfect blend of psychedelic synthwork and cosmic vocals, The Miracles Club takes you higher with raw escapist dance vibes and I’m in love with the video for this track. Their live show is something of a schooling in the church of dance as well, I highly recommend.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Round and Round/Beverly Kills // 4AD

Sun-soaked lo-fi rock meant for stoned afternoon picnics in the park or more serious episodes of drug-induced summertime escapism. Truly a remarkable album from the LA rockerz. Heavy harmonies and laid back grooves. There’s not much more to say, really, one of the best albums of the past few years by far. The one-two of “Round and Round” and “Beverly Kills” is my high point on the album.

LCD Soundsystem – Dance Yrself Clean // DFA

James Murphy could have buckled under the weight of expectation and reputation he had amassed since he began his gradual ascent to rockstartdom in 2002 with “Losing My Edge”. Instead he answers all the naysayers with a near perfect album of artfully pastiche modern dance rock. Yes it is Bowie, yes it is Eno, but dance music has its roots in referential rediscovery and James has cultivated a style all his own informed by the best elements of post-punk and disco from my favorite era of music, the late 1970s – the early 1980s. DFA has been influential in the shaping of popular music over the last decade and while This Is Happening marks the final installment of Murphy’s LCD project, its imprint on the American dance scene will be felt for years to come. I saw the band three times this year and I must say all three are memories for which I already feel nostalgic. As for the track, I can’t think of a more fitting mantra for my generation and OMG the fucking dynamics.

oOOoO – Hearts // Tri Angle

San Francisco producer Christopher Dexter Greenspan’s project oOOoO (pronounced “oh”) is my favorite act to emerge from the burgeoning witch house and darkwave scene. oOOoO create bleak and haunting soundscapes that represent the shadow sister of shinier lo-fi electronic groups like Glass Candy, the Chromatics and Nite Jewel. The debut EP is wondeful, but “Hearts” is beautifully captivating hypnotic melancholia meant for lonely walks home alone in the fog.

Teengirl Fantasy – Cheaters // Merok Recordings

The last track off Teengirl Fantasy’s first official full-length release 7AM on Merok Records is a swirl of synths woven around the woeful gospel of a heartbroken cheater. Surging basslines and samples heavy with delay are becoming the signature sound for the duo of Logan Takahashi and Nicholas Weiss as they continue to refine their ambient house sound. Stoked to hear more from these dudes in the future. They are also supposed to be rad live, so keep an eye out!

Soft Metals – The Cold World Melts // Captured Tracks

As the popularity of minimal synth swells and hipsters everywhere scramble to recreate on their laptops the electronic sounds disenfranchised LA punks made in the 1980s on drum machines and synthesizers, Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall of Portland have managed to create something genuine. Their commitment to analogue equipment is clear from their recordings and their live sets. Their cover of Throbbing Gristle’s “Hot On The Heels Of Love” is totally rad, but with the release of their first EP comes this cold disco original. I hope to see more from this pair in the next year.

Prins Thomas – Slangemusikk // Full Pupp

While Lindstrøm constructed shimmery Scandanavian pop with Christabelle, Prins Thomas ventured deeper into the cosmic realm, releasing his first solo album earlier in the year. Sprawling synth riffs unwind over skeletal percussion, evolving into melodic moments that quickly evaporate and disappear into a dreamy web of psychedelic warmth. The album is a beautiful exercise in krautrock-inspired dance and every track is worth a listen, but the hypnotic rolling organ of “Slangemusikk” is by far my favorite.

Gayngs – The Gaudy Side of Town // Jagjaguwar

In addition to falling in love with 90s house music this year, I acquired a taste for the softer side of 70s rock. Prog is nice from time to time and it’s IS fun to let reality lapse momentarily while listening to a krautrock album. But when I’m feeling uber domestic and cooking dinner with a glass of wine in hand, there’s nothing like a little Ned Doheny to make the house feel a little more like a home. Now I won’t pretend like I know jack shit about all the indie and psych folk or whatever groups most of these dudes are members of, but Gayngs is something of a super group, with over twenty dudes contributing to the final product. I mean they have Michael Lewis from Rinder & Lewis playing sax on this track, fucking Michael Lewis! The story, as you can find out elsewhere on the interwebz, is that the whole album was inspired by 10cc’s famous “I’m Not In Love”, so all the tracks are the same bpm and have the same spaced out feel. The whole album is incredible, but the first track is fucking perfect.

Die Antwoord – Wat Kyk Jy? // Interscope Records

Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek, the group from South Africa that ascended to international stardom over the course of the year. I have to say I am totally captivated by their bizarre blingged-out Afrikaner aesthetic. Their debut album, $O$, has most the hits that made them big along with the Diplo produced dancehall of “Evil Boy”. The video is astonishing in every way imaginable: district 9 claw/lotz of weinerz/boobz with eyez/satanik sexplay tackling forced male circumcision with a 14yo rapper from the Bush. No glove no love. But the track that I love the most is closer to their rave-rap roots. The groove and the verses on “Wat Kyk Jy?” are absofuckinglutely da best. Hipsters fist pump to this shit. For real, I’ve seen it.

Teen Inc. – Fountains // Self-Released

I thought it would I would be hitting my mid 30s before I started getting into the smoother sounds of soft rock and smooth jazz, but but and when you’re already browsing the new age section and buying Andreas Vollenweider albums, why try to lie to yourself? Paul Hardcastle HAD some hits, and I listened to my first complete Kenny G track this year. Well these dudes are on the same level. LA’s Teen Inc. are exploring similar ground to NY’s Francis & The Lights, but with a heavier lean on the jazz-funk influence (but apparently they are now jamming together!). Shy vocals, soprano sax and synth guitar work similar to the sound of Pat Metheny come together in airtight polished funk that grooves hard. These dudes are flying super low on the radar right now, but I have a feeling they are gonna be BIG next year.

Bubble Club – Violet Morning Blue // Bubble Club

Bubble Club, a new project from UK producer Dan Keeling, is one of my favorite new acts of 2010. House informed balearic trance, Bubble club shimmers with unashamed pop sensibility. Keeling released three incredible 12″s this year on his label of the same name with remixes from Dr Dunks, Soft Rocks, and Brennan Green, but the first release is still my favorite. Appearing on multiple DJ mixes throughout the year, “Violet Morning Blue” is anthemic in its beauty, washing over you in waves of intertwining melodic motifs, it is the perfect cap to any evening after hours of dancing. If only people would get as crazy about these tracks as they do Tiesto, the world might be a slightly better place.

Blondes – Paradise City // Merok Recordings

I had the fortune of seeing Blondes in a foggy laser-filled basement in Chinatown while I was still coming down from my Coachella-heightened state of euphoria. Brooklyn duo Sam Haar and Zach Steinman emerged this year on Merok records with their EP Touched. Working a table of synthesizers, effects pedals and dueling Electribes, the two have perfected a unique brand of organic atmospheric slo-mo trance, rich with dreamy vocals and reverberating claps. The whole EP is fantastic, but “Paradise City” grabbed me and stuck. Plus the video is totally hilar.

Shit Robot – Take ‘Em Up // DFA

So after LCD Soundsystem and The Crystal Ark and several other great DFA releases this year, the cynic in me had me dreading the release of the Shit Robot album From the Cradle to the Rave. But then I heard it. And it’s good for the most part. It’s not earth shattering, but then again it’s not as aggressively pastiche as the LCD album. It’s catchy house-informed dance pop made extremely well and the entire DFA team appears throughout the album. I’m most drawn to the riffy tracks with three syllable titles like “Tuff Enough” and “Take ‘Em Up”. But I still majorly crush on Nancy Whang, and the funky disco instrumentals perfectly complement her voice, which is why this song has been on repeat for me for a while.

Unknown Artist – Woman of Candy // International Feel Recordings

I think this was my favorite label of the year. Quality dance music from DJ Harvey and his consortium of uncredited underground producer friends, spanning balearic, acid house, space disco and beach rock. The Coyote release is incredible, the Turmerica 12″ is incredible, the Locossolus release is incredible. I mean there’s not enough I can say about these releases. “Woman of Candy” chases a wonky bouncy synth line through a shuffly jungle beat until unwinding into a balearic psychedelic guitar solo that goes on and on and on. So many things on this track to love.

Lone – Pineapple Crush // Magic Wire Recordings

And to wrap it up, this one I came late on. I am still tracking down more on this dude, but as far as I know Lone is from the UK and makes some of the best tropical house tracks I have heard. Maybe this is fitting to end with because so much of the theme of my posts this year have been shifting towards what I see as a revival of the 90s house sound. This definitely takes inspiration from that era, I mean, the dude has the house “whoop-yeah” combo on this track, for realz. But it also is a shift from the deeper 90s sounds towards more aggressive, break-driven dance. Either way, I’m totally crushin (lol, sorry).

Remixes/edits to come next…

So 2010 was most definitely an incredible year for music.
ESP Institute – Concentration – Volume I

The closing of lovefingers.org signaled the beginning of Lovefingers’ new project, the ESP Institute. The second release the label is quite possibly the most perfect obscuro beardo mix I have ever heard. A collection of originals, re-edits and remixes from an international cast of contributors, the mix features works by names familiar to the beardo such as Abel, Alexis Le-Tan, Basso, Bumrocks, Cos/Mes, Lee Douglas, Lexx, Tako, Tropical Jeremy, Lovefingers himself and more. Entrancing effects and hypnotic vocals beckon you deeper through prismatic cosmic and balearic soundscapes. Go out and buy the CD or the samplers at the ESP Institute webstore.

Tensnake – In The House Part 1 / Part 2

While the monthly Aeroplane mixes (and now The Magician mixes) amass the best nudisco and balearic house currently showing up on the scene, Tensnake distilled favorites from the past few years and melded them perfectly with classics to form two equally amazing mixes that were released on Defected this year. Stylistically in tune with what he has achieved in his releases and remixes, the first is a workout in disco, balearic and boogie, while the second takes things deeper into the house realm. Featuring releases from some of the best labels of the past few years, this seems to be some sort of the culmination of the disco house movement in the eye of popular dance music and will most certainly propel Tensnake towards the mainstream approval he deserves. Purchase the mix CD and tracks at Juno or Juno Download.

Thomas Hammann & Gerd Janson – Live at Robert Johnon Vol. 4

The fourth installment in the Live at Robert Johnson series comes from two regulars at the world renown Frankfurt club. Gerd Janson is head of the impeccable Running Back Recordsthat has released some of the most tasteful house music of the past few years in my opinion. Janson and Hammann together have perfected an enthrallingly minimalistic brand of house that draws equally on disco and deep house from the past twenty years. Their mixing is tastefully patient. They gradually build momentum into energetic swells and then strip tracks down to their skeleton motifs with amazing ease. I have to say, this is truly a party that I would have lost my shit at. They also did a Beats In Space mix recently that is similarly incredible.

Prince Language – Fabric London Mix Summer 2010

New York-based, Prince Language makes frequent appearances on Editions Disco, one of my favorite edit labels, while simultaneously remixing names like MGMT, Azari & III and numerous DFA acts. His No Comprendo mixes were some of the best collections of house and disco edits when they came out (you can still download them from his site). This mix is the latest installment in the series and was created to preface an appearance at London’s Fabric he made in June. It is further testament to Language’s abilities as a master of the dance floor and features work from the some of the best artists of contemporary underground house.

Scott Grooves – RA Podcast 225 Part I / Part II

Scott Grooves is a Detroit house heavyweight, but in all honesty I had heard little of his work besides his famous “Mothership Reconnection” of Daft Punk remix fame prior to this Fall. When he was asked to make a mix for Resident Advisor’s weekly podcast, I downloaded it hoping it might fall in line with my recent 90s house fascination and to my joy Scott shared two mix tapes he made in 1993. These mixes are absolutely timeless because they are not only superbly selected, they are also mixed beautifully. Journey back in time into the heyday of vocal house when DJs made mixtapes in their bedrooms solely for the purpose of jamming to them in their cars. And to be honest, I still freak out to Robyn S every time I hear it. Grooves is still releasing music and just played Rhonda in LA a few months back. Check out the RA interview for more info on his current projects/live appearances.

Browsing through a stack of cheap 12″s you come across a release from a label you haven’t seen before in San Francisco called BC Records. The label is pretty classic, yellow with a simple geometric logo, but it catches ones eye. Naturally, you begin to look into the origins of this label and find out it was based in Brooklyn and headed up by a Albanian man named Began Cekic who had a hand in the production of most of the tracks released. Turns out, there’s quite a bit of info out there about the dude. You find out BC was quite the aficionado at covering other people’s disco tracks, recreating heavily percussive, synth-laden, latin-flavored versions of everything from Jimmy “Bo” Horne to Kraftwerk to The Police. The interweb also tells you that the man was skilled at acquiring money, both legally and illegally, both as a disco producer and as a demolition expert. An interview with former collaborator and DJ legend Tee Scott informs you of his ways with money and you later find out that, after disappearing in the late 80s, he resurfaced in former Yugoslavia as a revolutionary working to establish the Republic of Montenegro. Here’s a picture of the Balkan mountains from which Began hailed.

Quite a crazy little story behind the record. I’ve found several over the past couple years and they are, understandably, all over New York. Here are a few of my favorites from the lesser known releases.

Bad Girls – Too Through

Particularly a fan of the Trans Brooklyn Express, if your a next-level nerd see how many of the OGs you can name (then go ponder why girls wont talk to you and cry to yourself to sleep). Read most of what I learned about BC here, a blog worth checking out.

What better a day to resurrect the blog from a cadaverous hibernation. As a token for your patience, I give to you on this unhallowed eve, my favorite mixes from the most elite horror specialists.

First, the let us start with the seminal piece in haunting mixes of ghostly rock and sinister synth soundtracks compiled and sequenced by the masters of the beardo horror Quiet Village.

Quiet Village – Fragments of Fear

The Halloween edition of RA’s weekly podcast the last two years has given us a glimpse into the tastes of those responsible for crafting the sounds of fear and shadows. Last year it was a bizarre journey through a satanic disco curated by goth dance queen Karen Dreijer Andersen and her pagan balearic Fever Ray ensemble. This year it was a journey across cosmic synth soundscapes selected by John Carpenter collaborator and Poltergeist sound designer Alan Howarth.

Fever Ray – RA Podcast 178

And I saved the best for last… Darklord disco’s Il Suono Scuro mix series are some of the beardo mixes available on the internet, not to mention his cosmic collection of album artwork is the source of many a beardo flyer. His site is dedicated to his mixes so I won’t host them here, but they are truly a horrific delight.
