Third Wave of H1N1 and Flu

I actually thought the flu was over with but apparently we are in the 3rd wave of it. There are many people still presenting to the clinics and hospitals with flu-like symptoms. It’s not something to take lightly so pay attention to what’s going on.

Hopefully, everyone has gotten their H1N1 and/or flu shot but if not they are still available to you.

Because it is spread by our hands and sharing food, keep your hands washed and carry some hand sanitizer with you just in case you don’t have soap and water available to you.

Olbrich’s Bolz Conservatory Chocolate Exhibit

How can you pass up a chocolate exhibit?! This exhibit has been running since January 4, 2010, and runs through March 21, 2010, at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

This is a self-guided exhibit called Chocolate: The Bitter and the Sweet. Explore the myths and history of chocolate in the tropical Bolz Conservatory.

Event is located at Olbrich Botanical Gardens Bolz Conservatory at 3330 Atwood Ave. in Madison, WI – (608) 246-4550.

The gardens were voted 1 of the top 10 most inspiring in North America by Horticulture Magazine.

Wisconsin Film Festival – April 15 to April 18

It is not too early to start talking about and planning for the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison, Wisconsin, in April this year. It runs from Thursday, April 15 through April 18, 2010.

This is the 12th year. The festival plays in 8 theaters all in downtown Madison within walking distance of each other.

Ways To Spend Valentine’s Day in Madison

Valentine’s Day (or weekend) is the one time a year you and your sweetheart should have some alone time. For many of us that means leaving the kids at home and worries at work! There needs to be some uninterrupted time for just the two of you.

Here are just a few ideas for spending the day or weekend.

1) This is what my husband and I are going to enjoy. We have a “romantic getaway” booked at the Inn on the Park at Capitol Square. We are going to pretend we are out of town, away from all the hustle of everyday. We have never done anything like this before. There will be wine, roses, and a stroll down State Street. The main thing is we will be doing something together!

2) For those of you who really can get away for a few days or a week, you might want to consider skiing up around Lake Geneva or Elkhorn. I personally have never been to a ski lodge/spa but hear from others they can be quite romantic with roaring fires and fantastic hot tubs. Check them out.

3) If you want something simpler, you might just consider a dinner for two at the fabulous Dayton Street Grille in The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club. Their chef was named by the Madison Magazine as the Best Local Chef for two years running (2008 and 2009). Be sure to call for reservations. It’s right downtown, so you can take a walk around the capitol or even arrange for a horse drawn carriage ride around Capitol Square.

No matter what you and your sweetheart decide on, it will be right for you. Have fun!

Remember the telephone operator on Laugh-In. She was hilarious! Lily Tomlin is going to be at the Overture Center, 201 State Street, in Madison, WI, on February 11, 2010. If Lily is half as funny as she was back then it should be a real good show.

I’ve read mixed reviews on her show so I’d like to see it for myself and decide. I am having trouble locating tickets for this event and not sure why. I am finding other locations she will be at but having trouble with getting tickets for Madison. If anyone has any info on that, could you let me know.

If you are serious about reducing garbage, here are some very useful tips:

1. Use reusable lunch bag or box.
2. When you make a purchase, don’t take bag unless you need one.
3. Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.
4. Use a sponge or cloth instead of paper towels.
5. Use reusable plastic containers for food instead of plastic bags.
6. Use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones.
7. Read books, magazines, and newspapers at library.
8. Use plates, cups, and utensils that can be washed.
9. Purchase juice and detergent in concentrate when possible.
10. Avoid buying foods in single serving packages.

Remember that everything we do whether big or small contributes to reducing garbage, recycling and saving the planet.

Talking or Texting on Cell Phones is Deadly While Driving

I think it finally sunk in today. I am one of those who thought you could talk on the phone while driving. I don’t text but that sounds even more dangerous.

Oprah put out some good information today on her show and talked with many people who had lost loved ones to someone either talking or texting on the phone while driving and not paying attention. A simple call or text could turn into a tragedy very easily.

They say that when you are on the phone while driving that you go into a tunnel vision and you can’t see around you like you can if you are not on the phone. They even had some examples. Check it out – especially if you are one that doesn’t believe it’s true. I don’t believe there is any phone call that is so important that you would take a chance on injuring or killing someone.

Fighting Off Winter Allergies

Because we spend more time inside in the winter, indoor allergens such as pet dander and dust mites can be a problem.

Here are some tips on winter allergies:

1. Give over-the-counter allergy medicines a try.

2. Keep pets out of bedrooms.

3. Wash bedding weekly in hot water, dry on high heat.

4. Use zippered allergen-proof covers on pillows and mattresses.

5. Wear mask over mouth and nose when vacuuming or dusting.

6. Use vacuum cleaner with high-efficiency particulate air filter.

If these tips don’t work for you, you may want to seek medical advice.
