Metric's chief financial officer, Glenn McLachlan, explains why the digital pen was a superior solution to their PDA. With 150 field service staff, providing maintenance services to petrol stations Metric wanted to have immediate access to their service reports and AIP forms to enable faster invoicing and improved customer service.
Print4Pen is software licensed to run on a desktop or a laptop computer which has access to a postscript laser printer. If you can turn a document to a PDF, and you have a Postscript laser printer handy, then you can use your Destiny digital pen with Print4Pen. Print4Pen accesses our digital pen server over the web and requests a dot pattern license. It prints the document with a unique layer of Anoto dots for each page, ready to be used with Destiny Wireless Australia digital pen services. Write on the paper, tick the 'send' box or dock the pen to a PC and within seconds, see the document in the Silhouette web based viewer. One can write as many times as necessary on a document, as the pattern licensed is unique and permanent until archived. The viewer will display all the combined pen strokes, or create a PDF of a page or the entire document (including the pages with not writing on it). A secure login mechanism on the form utility web site allows each user to see only documents written with a specific group of pens or only documents printed with the licensed Print4Pen application or documents that are shared. Requirements - To use Print4pen, you need to have a digital pen active and subscribing to the Destiny Australian services. - A4 CMYK colour and postscript laser printer is recommended (for instance Oki C5750) although it works with black & white postscript printers. - Desktop or Laptop must...<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/DigitalPenNews/~4/0gMT2M0oHE4" height="1" width="1"/>

Digital Pens Can Help in Swine Flu Pandemic

In an excellent study into the use of digital pen technology, Solano County in California USA has implemented a trial how Solano County Public Health could process the assesment and vaccination to achieve the benchmark of 350 people per hour in case of a flu pandemic. The trial allowed 267 patients to complete their own health assesment forms including known allergies, name, address etc. This electronically updated the patient database and allowed nurses to swiftly respond to the most urgent cases by alerting them based on a set of selected criteria. The ability for patients to record their own data and have that automatical convert into data meant huge time savings as manual data entry was not required. It was also shown that patients recording their own details that weren't transcribed by a third party resulted in fewer typographical errors. The ability for the Digital Pen & Paper system to identify the patients needing treatment the fastest, the reduced data entry time and the reduced error rate of the data means that Solano County Public Health can meet the benchmark for patient treatment in the case of a flu pandemic. Destiny Wireless specialises in Digital Pen & Paper solutions and builds applications for the health industry.<div class="feedflare">

A Note on Anoto AB

The core technology behind the Destiny Digital Pen & Paper solution is not really the pen (although the pen is pretty cool). The real genius of the system is in the paper, or to be more precise, it’s on the paper. The Digital Paper technology is enabled through a proprietary `Dot Pattern’ which was developed and is owned and licensed by Anoto AB of Sweden. Your Digital paper form is created by printing a proprietary pattern of very small dots on ordinary paper as part of the printing of your forms. These dots create a grid of XY co-ordinates that the camera in the pen `reads’ and stores. The pen stores the sequence of dots that reads and can identify exactly where it is leaving ink on the paper. The use of these dots also determines the unique dot pattern that you are writing on so it can't get confused with another form type you may have. After ticking `send', the file on the pen is finalised and then sent through the internet via mobile phone to the Destiny servers. Once the dot co-ordinates are sent to our servers, they are interpreted and displayed as the pen strokes, just like the original document itself. The licensing to access this technology is an annual rental that is paid to Anoto AB on a per user basis. This licensing structure means that it is a fair and level playing field by allowing multiple companies to design, develop and deliver Digital Pen &...<div class="feedflare">
