I was in the midst of taking pictures of my daughters classroom Christmas party. It was near the end and I had taken some pictures that didn’t come out right, and deleted them. All of a sudden I realized that the delete function was taking much too long. I started to panic. The LCD screen on my camera showed ‘no images’. Oh my, I deleted all my images!

Of course, it was worse than that. Earlier in the day I had taken pictures and video of another event my daughter had participated in and they were all gone as well. Almost 1 Gig of pictures and videos gone.

The first thing I did was not take any additional photos. What I’ve learned from recovering deleted files on a hard drive was that when you delete something, it’s just marked as deleted in the file structure, but physically still there. But if you add more data after accidentally deleting files, it may overwrite the files you are trying to recover. So the first rule is DON’T TAKE ANY MORE PHOTOS. Either remove the flash memory card or put away your camera and head home.

When you get to your computer, download a program called ‘Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery‘. This is part of a more extensive file recovery program written by a programmer from Russia, and the image recovery functions are easy to use and free.

Install and run the program and follow the simple instructions to recover your images. You may need to slip your flash memory into a card reader so it shows as an additional drive on your computer (normally via USB) if your camera is not supported directly.

In a few minutes all but 2 of the 93 photos and videos I took that day were recovered and copied to my computer. 2 photos were corrupted, but not bad compared to the alternative (having none!).

Being careful and not rushing when deleting images on your camera is the first lesson. But of course, mistakes happen. If they happen to you, try this and you’ll most likely have a smile on your face a few minutes after your photos are recovered and safely on your computer.

After spending lots of time at different retail stores in the area figuring out which digital camera is best for us, we finally have enough money to buy for that eye-popping, 8 mega pixel, 20x digital zoom, with up to 512MB expandable SD memory, and not to mention very portable, (that will be the envy of almost everyone we know). We march to the store armed with our life savings and lotsa pride in ourselves, when we pass by a new display – a ten mega pixel, up to 1G expandable memory, with built it microphone and stereo surround, video playback capable, with 24 scenic modes. Aaahh! And we sigh because the manufacturer claims that this is the best digital camera in the marketplace. And so as we always want to have the best, armed with our life savings and a few credit cards, we buy the “best digital camera.” But then again, that doesn’t last too long, because after a few months or so, here comes another “best digital camera!”

Of course it’s confusing, and continues to be. So what makes a digital camera, the best digital camera?

Well, there are specific factors to consider when looking for the “best digital camera” for you.

1) MEGAPIXELS. One of the most important features of digital camera to make it into the best digital camera category is its mega pixel capability. The higher the mega pixels the better the actual photograph will come out. A mega pixel is equivalent to one million pixels. The resolution of your image is based upon the mega pixel capability of your camera. This means that as you enlarge the picture, you would get more detail and less blurry colors.

2) ZOOM. Most digital cameras have both digital and optical zoom. A higher optical zoom is always better than a higher digital zoom. Digital cameras are usually furnished with optical of between 3x to 10x. The better the optical zoom, the higher it moves up to being in the best digital camera category.

3) LCD SIZE. The best digital camera will always have a large LCD screen to help you frame your subject without having to squint into the viewfinder. Choose the size of memory that you need, if you’re an avid photographer, you’ll  need more than 32MB that comes standard with most digital cameras. Memory cards today start from 32MB and can go up to 2GB.

The key point to selecting the best digital camera is to find one that will best suit you, your needs and your lifestyle. Don’t just buy the latest ‘hot’ digital camera or the one that claims they are the best digital camera in the marketplace. You wouldn’t want to buy a Digital SLR and use it for your home or family photos and have to lug around such a large camera! And you don’t want to buy the latest point and shoot camera when you’re serious about being a professional photographer. (Of course, you can use this to start out, but if you’re not a novice photographer anymore, you won’t want to get this kind of camera.)

Bottom line is that the best digital camera is the one that you will use and enjoy. It will meet your needs and have the features most important to you. Enjoy your new digital camera!

First, the LCD screen takes up the most power in a digital camera. It is possible to turn this feature off unless you really feel the need for it. • Use the AC adapter. Most digital cameras have an adapter that allows you to plug directly into a power point. If you don’t plan on moving around a lot and are near an outlet, the AC adapter will increase the life of your batteries.

You won’t be able to avoid recharging your battery or buying additional or replacement batteries eventually, but with these suggestions it won’t be needed as often.

So what are the important things to look for if you want to buy digital camera? To be able to answer this, there are 2 things you have to know before you can decide. The first thing is to define what YOU need and want in a digital camera. To do this, you can ask yourself the following questions:

- What do you want to take with your digital camera? Before you buy a digital camera, it is important to determine what kind of pictures you want to take with it. If you are a digital photography enthusiast, any digital camera will not just do. You have to look for features that can support the resolution, zoom requirements, etc.

- What is your budget? This is a very important question any person who intends to buy digital camera should ask. Because no matter what your needs and wants are for the device, your financial resources will play a huge part in dictating the type of digital camera you will buy.

- What are your resources? When you buy digital camera, sometimes the spending does not end there. You also have to consider the capacity and the power of the computer and the printer you will be hooking your camera with for your editing and printing needs. Editing software is normally included when you buy a digital camera but other devices aren’t. Aside from a printer, ink and paper for printing, you might also need additional memory cards for your camera and a more powerful computer to support image editing, storage and retrieval.

After answering these 3 questions, the second set of information you’ll need to know before you buy a digital camera are the features that you need in the device. These include:

- Resolution. Before you buy a digital camera, check its capacity to produce high quality photo images. The number of pixels indicated determines the resolution.
