I recently had my bloodwork done and my cholesterol numbers were peachy indeed. While I will not credit coconut oil with my weight loss (my lifestyle plan did that, then again, coconut oil is part of that lifestyle), I will say it certainly made my food much more tasty.

My own personal frugal dieting tips are quite common-place:

Buy in bulk. My local grocery stores will often have chicken at 59 cents a pound; those days have me stocking up on 20-30 pounds of chicken. And it lasts great in the freezer!
Make great-tasting coffee at home. I can’t remember the last time I indulged in a $4 Starbucks coffee thingee - instead, I use Sweetleaf liquid Stevia and cinnamon at home to create the same yummy flavors.
Use Amazon.com. Did you know that Amazon.com has a Grocery section…and offers Deals and Steals there as well? Click HERE to see what’s currently available!

Of course, I always buy generic whenever possible as well. The amount of savings can be quite noticeable as the weeks go by.

And don’t forget eBay! Did you know you can get food coupons (people food, dog food, cat food,etc.) like so?

You know, the following just warms the cockles of my heart:

….For years, cleansing diets and detox plans have been in the spotlight, fueled by stories of celebrities who followed these strict regimens to lose weight quickly for a movie or an awards show….

The plans are supposed to remove chemical and dietary toxins from the body. But weight-loss experts have long been skeptical about the claims, saying there is no scientific evidence such programs do a better job than the body’s own organs. They also say many of the plans are deficient in protein and other nutrients….MORE…

Wouldn’t it be peachy to the max if the world actually came to realize that dieting is BIG BUSINESS with a capital B…and scamsters will say/write/hype ANYTHING to make a buck?

Oh, to dream of a world in which the One True Way to Losing Weight was adhered to like superglue….that of taking in LESS calories than you expend.

‘course, human nature being what it is, that would assume people are aliens from another planet (and hence not prey to the desire for a shortcut with zero energy expenditure. :( ) Just look at what’s available this moment on eBay regarding detox:

And that ain’t happening soon, alas.

Sigh.

Remember, you own the keys to your own weight loss…and once you turn that key in your mind that you are WORTH it and beyond, your path will become clear. You won’t go ON a diet, instead, you’ll change your lifestyle (and be glad you did).

I should know - 50 pounds minus later and two years, I’ve kept the weight off and am doing peachy. And if I can do it…anyone can. And you can take THAT to the bank.

I just read the most amazing story over at Diet Blog - to wit:

A family of four in the United Kingdom, weighing a grand total of 83 stones or 1,162 pounds, says their obesity is a hereditary condition, leaving them unable to work and the $32,278.20 they receive in social assistance isn’t enough to live on. They want more!…MORE….

Good Lord, can you believe that??

In all honesty, this is very very VERY sad.

Obesity is a very real problem….but it’s no excuse to GIVE UP trying to get healthy.

One of my absolute favorite resources for turning AWAY from obesity is Richard Simmons. You remember him, right? The perky guy from General Hospital who is a national icon for fitness and exercise? Perhaps this will give your memory a reminder:

Anywhos, Richard Simmons has this utterly magnificent video/DVD set out called Sweatin’ to the Oldies. I remember it VIVIDLY because when I tried it out 50 pounds ago, that was the first (the very first!) time I had danced in over a decade.

Wow, it was tremendous indeed!

I never forgot it to this day.

Richard Simmons also runs a superb support site too over at the Richard Simmons Community. I was a member there for a year - it’s one of the warmest, most accepting dieting sites I’ve encountered. I highly recommend it!

Oh, the joys the suffuse my very being!

Well, actually, at this precise moment (1:27am), that’s not exactly true - I’m awake right now because I’m massively sick with a sore throat and inflammation-runoff that could dissolve concrete piers. And what better cure for that than to blog!

Thus, there I was, moseying around Google News, when I came across:

… It’s the latest weight loss craze hitting the Internet. While the proper pronunciation of this Brazilian berry is in dispute, health experts agree, it doesn’t work, and Connecticut’s attorney general has launched an investigation.

We’re talking about Acai berry. Take a look at the junk mail folder in your e-mail and there is probably an e-mail, or several e-mails, from companies selling this stuff. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says it is not beneficial to your physical health and could be dangerous to your financial well-being…..

… Soon after signing up for a free trial, M. Chanel Pinkett started to receive more pills and get charged for them. She was billed more than $200 in three weeks and couldn’t stop it….MORE….

The scam of colon cleansers, colonics, and zapping your rear with electricity

Sh*t.

It happens.

And it *really* happens when all those scammers want to part you from your hard-earned money by trying to sell you on colon cleansers!

To this day, I simply cannot believe how marketers have managed to get an entire population segment to believe that what works perfectly fine (their bowels) really need an artificial boost to "cleanse out the ickness" that resides there.

It truly staggers the mind!

For example, consider the excruciating joys of mucoid plaque, supposedly the ickness that currently resides in your bowels.

Or should I say, the junk that colon cleansers actually produce in your body (note! it wasn’t there BEFORE you took that cleanser) that gets plopped out and you say, Jeepers my gosh, it must work!

Don’t believe me? Take a gander at:

Mucoid Plaque - a dubious idea

and I quote:

(imagine really gross picture here) … Have you ever expelled something that looked like this? Well, you haven’t, unless you have been using bowel cleansing products. It’s called mucoid plaque, and it’s only found in users of bowel cleansing products, not in normal people…..MORE….

Blech.

Let’s be a weee bit serious here folks. The only way you can "lose weight" by doing a colon cleanse (and think about it - those two innocent words. "Colon." "Cleanse") is because you plop out the current contents of your last chomped-upon foods.

Guess what will happen when you eat again? Yep, that weight will just come back (because you just ate it!).

Here are 2 more useful resources to learn more about why you DON’T want to throw out your money:

Now, let’s say that for some strange inexplicable reason, you feel like you’re more constipated than a black hole and reeeeeallly want relief. That’s why the gods made enemas….a Fleet enema will cost you less than a dollar from your local grocery store and help will be on the way.

However, the makers of colon cleansers certainly don’t make money from that common-sense solution (which is why you never see something so simple advertised).

Such is life.

Unfortunately, colon cleansing is Big Business with a capital B - just look at what’s available on eBay today.

Depressing indeed. At the time of this writing, there was over 960 items for sale.

Of course, you could do what John Harvey Kellogg recommended in his runaway best seller back in 1915, Colon Hygiene on page 68 and 69:

The most effective method is the application of the sinusoidal current to the rectum and abdominal muscles, or to the rectum and the central portion of the back. My innards. They quiver at the idea of them being introduced to electricity. Really.

But I digress.

Anywhos, that’s the headsup for today! If you have an insane urge to cleanse your colon, drink lots of water, take psyllium seeds and fiber, or at the most extreme, get a Fleet enema like the below.

Eat This, Not That Diet Book Commentary and Review

Have you ever heard of the book by the editor of Men’s Health Magazine - Eat This, Not That! ?

If not, did you know there are over 400 positive reviews of it at Amazon.com ?

I was rather intrigued by this and so researched further. The reviews ranged between:

…There are 2 sections that I found helpful that was not available online - the drink section and the menu interpretations. I love coffee and beer. I can drink the occasional coffee and I cheat sometimes with beer. Upon reading the page about beer, it turns out my beloved Samuel Adams is listed under "Not that" and it highly recommends Beck’s Light.

My favorite section of the book is the menu interpretations. We won’t always be going to KFC, Subway, Chili’s, etc and Dave knows this. He has listed sample menus from your run-of-the-mill taqueria, steakhouse, bbq joint, even sushiya! In each menu, it tells you what to eat and what to avoid!!…

Flipped through the book, would never buy it! Choices between bad and worse? This man seems to know little about health and really losing weight. A good tip here and there does not make up for what is lacking. Just one example, does he mention the danger of all the growth hormones in meat and milk products that can contribute to obesity?

Hmmm, my….those are two extremes indeed!

"Eat This, Not That" deals with the idea that IF you are going to eat out instead of dining on luscious beef-bone with chili pepper soup (my homecooked favorite!), there are "healthier" (read: lower calorie) choices for a vast majority of delightful fast-foodness. For example:

At Burger King, eat a Whopper Jr. w/o mayo, with a Garden Salad, instead of a Big Fish Sandwich with Tartar Sauce and a medium fries.
Or at Chili’s, eat a Sizzle and Spice Firecracker Tilapia instead of a Citrus Fire Chicke and Shrimp Fajita.

This is a good book to keep in your glove compartment for a quick-reference to calorie counts of restaurant foods; the handiness and convenience of it make it worth purchasing. You can read all the reviews HERE.

Of course, you can always be smart too and just ditch the carb-intensive or calorie-intensive parts of your foods too, like the hamburger bun, the fries and the like. Smart eating - it’s a Good Thing Indeed.

Anti-Aging Fountain of Youth For Other People Via Your Money!

I just came across this most excellent post by the most excellet Diet Blog: about how resveratrol, the ever-popular phytoalexin that is produced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.

But of course everyone knows that.

Oh, and it’s also in the skin of red grapes too! And red grapes….why, that’s used for red whine! Bingo! Red wine is GOOD for you!

Still with me? Okay, onto the article:

…It was hard to ignore the headlines a couple of years ago. Newswires were replete with suggestions that resveratrol could boost health and lengthen life. Read beyond the headlines a bit though and you realize that this is only good news if you are a middle aged, overweight mouse. Still, the results were dramatic - mice given resveratrol became much healthier and lived about 25% longer than the mice who didn’t get resveratrol (Nature, 2006).

….Sounds impressive, but there are some eensy, weensie details that we need to consider before we run to the liquor store or supplement shops.

The longer lived mice received the equivalent of 20 bottles of wine/day worth of resveratrol.
Last year the researchers who published the 2006 study conducted another study on normal weight, middle aged mice that showed no difference in longevity (Cell Metabolism, 2008). Curiously this study did not make any headlines. It should be noted, however that there were positive health differences in the resveratrol group.
No human trials to date have been conducted on the effects of resveratrol and aging. There are 2 reasons for this, according to Bharar Aggarwal, a University of Texas researcher.

1. Cost - it would be very expensive to provide resveratrol to human subjects.

2. Companies that control the supply of resveratrol aren’t making it available to researchers because they are looking to haul in big bucks by turning into a drug ….MORE….

Oy.

This whole idea flings back to "Selling the Dream"…thereby making a Fountain of Youth for the manufacturers of whatever snake-oil the smashed red grape skins evolves into.

Wanna bet there’s already anti-aging thingees out there on the market? Tons of ‘em! I’ll get to those shortly, but first, want to share my experiences.

I’m a 40-something mom who has a plethora of children (plus 2 mooses and 12 TwitterBudgies). Back in 2006, I got sick of being 177+ pounds on a 5.3" frame, and decided to change my lifestyle.

50 pounds lighter, I can say…that’s the first thing that helped. To lose the weight, I chose to incorporate exercise into my lifestyle…thus USING what the gods had given me to get around on this earth. ie….

USE your body and it tones up.

Next, I started making certain I drank enough water - while I cannot definitely SAY it helps keep my skin supple, it doesn’t appear to detract from it! Plus, my morning pint of water does seem to kick-start my metabolism into moving (which again, is a Good Thing indeed).

But what about physical tips? I started going grey 3 years ago and decided (then) that I’d never color my hair - I had earned every stripe of silver!

Morning!

So there I was yesterday at the YMCA, getting in my cardio workout (I’ve just started going back to the gym with the husband - I normally work out at home, but figured this would be great spousal time as well). I joyfully bounded onto the Precor Elliptical, turned on the TV (Discovery Channel rocks!) and waited patiently for How It’s Made.

I would have choked on my coffee if I had that beverage of the Gods next to me. OMG, if you’re a real person…you need to (gasp!) diet and exercise TOO!

I. Cannot. Believe. People. Actually. Fall. For. This.

Talk about selling the dream!!

Basically, Slimshots is an appetite suppressent. Thing is, their ingredients are somewhat, ahem, unique?

From their own page, it reads a "Proprietary blend of:

Palm Oil
Oat Oil
Water

And that’s going to suppress your appetite?

When I read that this morning, my mind was afire!

"Jeepers Self," I cried, "I can get those ingredients on my own! Let’s see what they’re used for!"

Off to the Internet I dashed! And from the American Palm Oil Company, I read:

Palm oil may be used in a variety of ways. Trans free uses of palm oil are shortenings, margarine, puff pastry margarine, frying, and vanspati.

There are also a variety of non-food uses of palm oil and palm kernel oil such as soaps, candles, rubber processing, cosmetic products, fuel for cars with modified engines, and as a substitute for diesel oil for drilling mud…MORE….

What? No mention of appetite suppressing? Golly, but look! there’s that line "fuel for cars with modified engines!"

And after all, our bodies are our own, ummmm, Engines of Life!

Peoples, losing weight is not about appetite suppressing. It’s not about taking the easy way out. It’s about eating smarter, exercising regularly, and honoring yourself and your body as you deserve.

Instead of wasting your money with diet pills/supressents/etc. that don’t work, instead consider common-sense ways to smoosh down your desire to eat like:

Drink lots of water. Yes, yes, I know, sounds too easy, right? I’m living proof it can work.
Eat fiber-rich foods. Fiber is (get this!) bulk. Bulk makes you feel fuller. You can find a great list over ‘em over at the Mayo Clinic.
Exercise. Two benefits here - one, you burn calories, and two, your mind is taken off of your phantom hunger.

In closing, do NOT give into Buying The Dream and spending money on something that you can achieve by your own personal self.

You can lose the weight you need naturally…without giving the diet pill pushers more money to burn. It’s simply a matter of turning the key in your mind…and realizing that yes indeed, you’re worth it.
