There are a lot of options out there for you to reduce your risk of diabetes. Some people say altering your diet works. Others think you can take a miracle supplement. But new research shows a popular morning drink could be the easiest – and most effective – way.

The study was just published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. It comes from Dr. Ling Zheng, a top researcher of cellular biology at Wuhan University in China.

We want to let you know up front that Dr. Zheng’s research is the early stages. But it builds on earlier findings that show this drink may help prevent diabetes. Dr. Zheng has taken a look at that early research and he’s done his own studies to take it further. He tested three components in the drink. And he’s found one that really stands out.

Three Components Tested

The drink we’re talking about is coffee. The three components Dr. Zheng tested are caffeic acid, cholorgenic acid, and caffeine. And he tested them against abnormal protein deposits.

These deposits are found in people with type 2 diabetes. They can form from a substance called human islet amyloid polypeptide (HIAPP), which is found in the pancreas. Dr. Zheng figured that if the compounds can block HIAPP, they can stop the deposits from forming. And that would help prevent or treat diabetes.

He found caffeic acid to work the best out of the three. Caffeic acid isn’t related to caffeine. But it is a rich antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. There was one other thing that’s also worth mentioning. Decaffeinated coffee has higher levels of caffeic acid than caffeinated coffee. So the researchers think decaf coffee may give you better benefits.

Dr. Zheng’s research was all lab-based and his results are preliminary. But there’s plenty of evidence that shows coffee may help with diabetes.

One bit of evidence comes from a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. It shows that people who drink more coffee lower their risk of type 2 diabetes.

The Right Way to Drink

Dr. Zheng offers a tip that we’ve told you about before: If you drink coffee, make sure it’s black.

“The cream and sugar served with coffee” won’t help people with diabetes, he says.

But if you can’t stand drinking your coffee black…we have some options to help you.

The first thing you can do it use coconut milk as a creamer substitute. It’s loaded with healthy fats and it has a creamy flavor. If you don’t like coconut milk…you can always use almond milk instead.

The second thing you can do it cut sugar by using a little bit of honey or agave nectar instead. But it’s always best if you avoid adding all sweeteners to your coffee.

To your best health,

In a reversal of two decades of medical reports, a Mayo Clinic study finds the frequency of nerve damage called diabetic polyneuropathy is similar in prediabetic patients and healthy people. Physicians should seek explanations other than prediabetes for patients who have painful small fiber polyneuropathy, the researchers say. The study was published in the February issue of Diabetes Care.

Diabetic polyneuropathies, or DPN, are commonly associated with diabetes and chemical derangements related to high blood sugar. The neuropathies can injure nerve fibers throughout the body, but usually affect the feet and legs. The nerve damage can create sensory, motor and bodily function problems. DPN can be painful and life-threatening.

“It is highly unlikely that impaired glucose or associated metabolic derangements cause polyneuropathy, at least not to the high frequency previously reported,” says lead author Peter J. Dyck, MD, a Mayo Clinic neurologist.

The five-year study, “Impaired Glycemia and Diabetic Polyneuropathy: The OC IG Survey,” tested nearly 550 people representative of a community of older patients of Northern European extraction. Of these, 150 individuals were healthy subjects, 174 had prediabetes indicators, and 208 had newly developed type 2 diabetes. The study concluded that typical or atypical (a painful small-fiber variety) DPN was not more prevalent in prediabetics than in healthy people.

While the researchers agree that prediabetes is a precursor of type 2 diabetes, they found no evidence that it directly leads to greater prevalence of typical or atypical DPN. Attempts should be made to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes; however, considering the complications from overtreatment, the study suggests physicians should avoid treatment of prediabetes as diabetes if their intention is to prevent the development of diabetic polyneuropathy, the researchers say.

Paula Deen's rise to fame is built on scrumptious high-sugar, highly processed foods with a distinct Southern flare.

Her latest show, "Paula's Best Dishes," is a hit on the Food Network, and she also has several popular cook books to her name.

While no doubt tasty, the meals Ms. Deen promotes can easily lead to weight gain and diabetes, so her recent admission on the Today Show that she's been living with type 2 diabetes for the past three years did not come as a great shock.

Her decision to become the spokesperson for a dangerous diabetes drug however, did, and has raised the ire of many.

In fact, if her plan was to become a role model of healthy living, it has backfired in a dramatic way, as most people are suddenly (and wisely!) shunning the notion that you can just pop a pill to address a diet-related health problem.

As stated in Time Magazine:

"There is something slightly unsavory about the fact that Deen has continued to advocate the type of unhealthy, fattening foods that contribute to obesity and, therefore, to Type 2 diabetes, only to step forward now as the pitchperson for a drug that is designed to treat that disease, which she herself has had in secret for years."

Is a Drug Really the Answer to Type 2 Diabetes?

Many are questioning Ms. Deen's decision to keep quiet about her diagnosis for so long, while continuing to promote her signature high-sugar meals. According to Time Magazine:

"Deen said that she decided not to make her diagnosis public until she could "bring something to the table when I came forward. I've always been one to think that I bring hope." For her, that hope apparently comes in the form of Victoza, a diabetes medication made by Novo Nordisk.

Deen is now the spokeswoman for the drug. Deen and her sons, Jamie and Bobby, have also partnered with the drugmaker to promote the new Diabetes in a New Light program, which provides food tips and stress-management techniques as well as medical interventions for controlling diabetes. "I was determined to share my positive approach and not let diabetes stand in the way of enjoying my life," Deen said in a statement about the launch of Diabetes in a New Light."

Clearly, Ms. Deen did not spend the last few years investigating the underlying causes of diabetes. If she had done so, she would have discovered that you cannot successfully cure type 2 diabetes with drugs and/or insulin.

Why?

Because type 2 diabetes arises from faulty leptin signaling and insulin resistance. It is therefore a fully preventable condition that can be controlled or reversed by recovering your insulin and leptin sensitivities. However, the only known way to reestablish proper leptin and insulin signaling is through a proper diet and exercise. There is NO drug that can accomplish this – a fact that makes the current disease paradigm even more tragic, as diabetes continues to skyrocket, and the conventional treatments are needlessly killing diabetics prematurely.

In Ms. Deen's case, her drug of choice, Victoza, is a non-insulin diabetes medication that has some very disturbing potential side effects, including cancer! It's certainly not something I would perceive as a "positive approach"…

It is important to know that there is NO pill to cure or even control diabetes that addresses the fundamental issue, insulin resistance. Most of them tend to lower blood sugar, which is why they are called oral hypoglycemics. The problem with most physicians is that they believe high blood sugar is the problem. However, the real problem is insulin resistance, which these drugs do not address in any way.

Victoza—A Potentially Dangerous Option for Diabetics…

According to the prescribing information for Victoza (Liraglutide), there are a number of important warnings you need to be aware of, including a black box warning—the strongest warning issued by FDA—which states that:

"Liraglutide causes thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures in rodents. It is unknown whether Victoza® causes thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans, as human relevance could not be determined by clinical or nonclinical studies."

Furthermore, the web site for Victoza includes the following important warnings:

"It is not known whether Victoza® causes thyroid tumors or a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) in people which may be fatal if not detected and treated early. Do not use Victoza® if you or any of your family members have a history of MTC or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). While taking Victoza®, tell your doctor if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. These may be symptoms of thyroid cancer.

Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) may be severe and lead to death. Before taking Victoza®, tell your doctor if you have had pancreatitis, gallstones, a history of alcoholism, or high blood triglyceride levels since these medical conditions make you more likely to get pancreatitis. Stop taking Victoza® and call your doctor right away if you have pain in your stomach area that is severe and will not go away, occurs with or without vomiting, or is felt going from your stomach area through to your back. These may be symptoms of pancreatitis."

Ads for the drug feature a smiling Deen with the caption, "Live a life that's delicious." But just how "delicious" will life be if you end up getting cancer? Other common side effects associated with the drug include:

Headache

Nausea

Diarrhea

The Diabetes Drug that Probably Should Not Be On the Market…

As discussed by Tom Philpott, writing for Mother Jones, Victoza has only been on the market for two years, gaining FDA approval in January 2010, but the drug barely made it through due to the strong link to thyroid cancer.

"In April 2009, the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 12-1 that rodent data linking the drug to thyroid cancer could apply to humans. The committee got hung at 6-6 (with one abstention) on whether the cancer risk was ground for FDA rejection. The drug eventually won approval anyway," Philpott writes.

Furthermore, Philpott reveals that, in 2010, Novo Nordisk was publicly reprimanded for breaching no less than seven clauses of the British ABPI Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry with regards to its promotions of Victoza:

Clause 2 – Bringing discredit upon and reducing confidence in the pharmaceutical industry.

Clause 3.1 – Promoting a medicine prior to the grant of its marketing authorization.

Clause 7.2 – Making misleading claims.

Clause 7.3 – Using misleading comparisons.

Clause 7.9 – Failing to provide information about side-effects and reflect available evidence.

Clause 9.1 – Failing to maintain high standards.

Clause 12.1 – Disguising promotional material.

Would You Risk Cancer for No Benefit at All?

Yes… there's actually compelling evidence that drugs designed to reduce your blood sugar do not provide you with ANY kind of health benefit, and may in fact be far more dangerous than the disease itself. For example, a recent meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials involving more than 33,000 people showed that this kind of treatment is not only ineffective, it's also dangerous. In fact, the review showed that treatment with glucose-lowering drugs actually increase your risk of death from heart-related ailments, and all other causes. The researchers noted that:

"The overall results of this meta-analysis do not show a benefit of intensive glucose lowering treatment on all cause mortality or cardiovascular death. A 19% increase in all cause mortality and a 43% increase in cardiovascular mortality cannot be excluded."

Nortin Hadler, a University of North Carolina professor of medicine is another vocal critic of diabetes drugs. In a 2008 paper published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, he declared such drugs "useless," because lowering your blood-sugar levels does not provide any tangible benefits. Dr. Ron Rosedale has also discussed this for many years now.

To top it all off, the drug hawked by Deen costs a whopping $500 per month! Yes you read that right; FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS a month, or about $17 a day.

Lessons Learned from Avandia: Diabetes Drugs Can be Deadly

Avandia (rosiglitazone) is the poster child for what is wrong with the drug treatment of type 2 diabetes. After hitting the market in 1999, a 2007 study in the New England Journal of Medicine linked it to a 43 percent increased risk of heart attack, and a 64 percent higher risk of cardiovascular death, compared to patients treated with other methods!

It took nearly 10 years of the drug being on the market for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take action and restrict access to this dangerous drug. The European Medicines Agency banned it altogether. Meanwhile, millions of people have taken Avandia and have been exposed to these unacceptably high-risk side effects, for a drug that in no way treats the underlying causes of diabetes. More than 80,000 diabetics have suffered from strokes, heart failure or other complications including lethal heart attacks from this dangerous drug.

Again, the only thing drugs like Avandia do is to help lower blood glucose, which has virtually no influence on the long-term damage due to type 2 diabetes. Most of the damage is caused by elevated insulin levels, which can be remedied with an optimal diet and exercise program alone, if you're compliant.

Other studies have also confirmed that most drugs given to type 2 diabetics are at best worthless and at worst harmful or even deadly. Last year the New England Journal of Medicine featured not one, not two, but FOUR studies backing up the conclusion that the path of conventional medicine is leading diabetics astray, and doing far more harm than good.

You Don't have to Be a Statistic…

Amazingly, one in four Americans have some form of diabetes or pre-diabetes. If this is not a clear sign that conventional health recommendations are flawed, I don't know what is.

I too have personal experience with this disease. I developed it myself at one time, and most of my paternal relatives (my dad included), have, or have died from, diabetes. My personal experience with diabetes and subsequent review of the literature made it VERY clear to me that virtually every case of type 2 diabetes is reversible… And the cure for type 2 diabetes has NOTHING to do with giving insulin or taking drugs to control your blood sugar. In fact, giving insulin to someone with type 2 diabetes is one of the worst things that can be done. Any physician still doing this suffers from profound ignorance of insulin physiology.

It's important to understand that many of the conventional recommendations for treating diabetes are not only flawed but dead wrong, and I discussed the reasons why in this previous article. If you need a refresher, please review it again. Once you understand that type 2 diabetes is a fully preventable condition that arises from faulty leptin signaling and insulin resistance, the remedy will become clear. To reverse the disease, you need to recover your body's insulin and leptin sensitivities!

How do you do that?

As mentioned earlier, the ONLY way to accomplish this is through proper diet and exercise. There is NO drug that can correct leptin signaling and insulin resistance… Adhering to the following guidelines can help you do at least three things that are essential for successfully treating diabetes: recover your insulin/leptin sensitivity; help normalize your weight; and normalize your blood pressure:

Severely limit or eliminate sugar and grains in your diet, especially fructose which is far more detrimental than any other type of sugar. Following my Nutrition Plan will help you do this without too much fuss.

Exercise regularly. Exercise is an absolutely essential factor, and without it, you're unlikely to get this devastating disease under control. It is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance. If you're unsure of how to get started, I recommend reviewing my exercise program for tips and guidelines. It is also critical to work your way up to include some Peak 8 exercises.

Avoid trans fats.

Get plenty of omega-3 fats from a high quality, animal-based source.

Optimize your vitamin D levels. Recent studies have revealed that getting enough vitamin D can have a powerful effect on normalizing your blood pressure and that low vitamin D levels may increase your risk of heart disease.

Optimize your gut flora. Your gut is a living ecosystem, full of both good bacteria and bad. Multiple studies have shown that obese people have different intestinal bacteria than lean people. The more good bacteria you have, the stronger your immune system will be and the better your body will function overall. Fortunately, optimizing your gut flora is relatively easy. You can reseed your body with good bacteria by eating fermented foods (like natto, raw organic cheese, miso, and fermented vegetables) or by taking a high quality probiotic supplement.

Address any underlying emotional issues and/or stress. Non-invasive tools like the Emotional Freedom Technique/Meridian Tapping Technique can be extremely helpful and effective.

Get enough high-quality sleep every night.

Monitor your fasting insulin level. This is every bit as important as your fasting blood sugar. You'll want your fasting insulin level to be between 2 and 4. The higher your level, the worse your insulin sensitivity is.

Did you know people with diabetes have a reduced immune system? This can increase the risk for illness. Here are my cold and flu season tips which are good for anyone but especially for people with diabetes.

What you need to know about the flu

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), people with diabetes who get the flu are 6 times more likely to be hospitalized with complications. People with diabetes are 3-4 times more likely to die from the flu and pneumonia.

Some people may develop the flu despite getting a flu shot, but not because of the vaccine. It is not recommended that people with diabetes use the flu nasal spray mist which is a diluted live virus.

Medicare patients are entitled to free flu and pneumonia vaccines.

It is recommended that every person with diabetes get the pneumonia vaccine since it can prevent 80% of the pneumonia cases and related complications.

You can get both pneumonia and flu vaccines at the same time but have them given to you in different arms.

People allergic to eggs or who have Guillian Barre Syndrome should NOT get the flu shot.

The best time to get the flu shot is in October or November.

The Differences Between a Cold and the Flu

A Cold

Slow onset and is caused by a virus (versus a bacterial infection that may feel like a cold).

Typical symptoms: sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, clear secretions, dry cough, no fever, sore throat and no body aches.

A cold generally does not affect blood sugar.

The Flu

Sudden onset and is caused by virus. Also increases your chances of a bacterial illness like sinusitis, bronchitis or pneumonia.

Typical symptoms: watery eyes, stuffy running nose, flushed skin, fever, body aches, chills, muscle aches, weakness and extreme fatigue.

Very possible for the flu to have an effect on blood sugar due to the stress of the illness.

What to do if you get the flu

Rest.

Hydrate with sugar free liquids about once an hour.

Monitor your blood sugar every 4 hours. If it is below 60 mg/dL or over 240 mg/dL, call your doctor.

Monitor your temperature. Adults with a temperature above 101 should call their doctor.

Check for ketones when your blood sugar rises above 240 mg/dL. If a moderate to large amount of ketones is present, call your doctor. If a small amount of ketones is present, drink extra sugar-free liquids.

Wash your hands often.

If you are vomiting or have diarrhea, add some sodium from soup or consommé about every 3 hours.

Keep taking your medications as directed even if you are not eating as your blood sugar will possibly be elevated. Check with your physician if you are on insulin as it may need to be increased.

Call your doctor if you lose more than 5 pounds. That may indicate that your blood sugar is out of control.

Call your doctor if you have trouble breathing or if you start to feel disoriented.

Change your tooth brush when you are feeling better to avoid potential infection or re-infection.

What to do if you get a cold

Rest.

Hydrate.

Consider taking zinc supplements of 50 mg every 8 hours for 3 – 4 days. If you prefer zinc lozenges, choose the sugar free kind.

Consider taking vitamin C supplements up to 1000 mg a day. Watch out for stomach upset which can happen.

Consider taking Echinacea if you have a cold to help support your immune system.

Preventing Illness

Of course, preventing illness is always best. In addition to getting the flu shot or pneumonia vaccine, here are ways to help keep your immune system healthy and avoid illness during this season of increased travel and social interaction:

Get plenty of rest.

Stay hydrated.

Wash your hands.

Carry hand sanitizer.

Avoid contact with objects such as door knobs, computer keyboards, telephones, or grocery carts without using hand sanitizer.

Consider supplementation such as Vitamin D (D3 cholecalciferol) and probiotics to support your immune system.

Consider using a Neti pot which will help keep your nasal passages clear.

I wish you a healthy and happy winter season

The role which marine phytoplankton has in the aid and treatment of all types of diabetes is becoming more understood. It is now no longer seen as simply a possible alternative medicine or treatment for those suffering from all types of diabetes, but instead it is now seen for its beneficial effects and some are even calling it a cure for the disease.

Even if it is not a cure, it is a natural treatment for the person suffering from diabetes and not only treats the root cause of the disease, but also diminishes the symptoms that one experiences as a result of having the disease. The greatest and most obvious benefit of having marine phytoplankton play the role of combating your diabetes is that it is completely natural. No other drugs are part of the treatment; no synthetic materials have to be injected into your body. It is purely a natural way to treat root causes of diabetes and alleviate the symptoms. As natural medicine is gaining in popularity and acceptance in western medicine, it is becoming greater understood and distributed.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease which affects the blood sugar levels in our body. People with diabetes will have high blood sugar because the body is not producing the insulin (a hormone which regulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism in all of our bodies; without it, the body will simply produce too much glucose or blood sugar and this has many negative effects) or cells in the body, such as in the liver, are not responding to the insulin which is being produced by the body.

Diabetes is usually classified as two types. Type 1 diabetes is when the person’s body isn’t producing any insulin; and Type 2 diabetes is when the body is resistant to the insulin which the body is producing. Type 1 will require the individual who has it to have to regularly take insulin injections. Symptoms are frequent urination, an increase in hunger and appetite, and also an increase in thirst. People with diabetes are more prone to various infections.

Marine phytoplankton and diabetes

Marine phytoplankton is now a natural element being used in the fight against diabetes. The phytoplankton simply reduces the amount of sugar in an individual’s bloodstream and a high level of blood sugar is of course the problem. Not only does it play a significant factor in reducing the levels of blood sugar, but it also treats the various symptoms associated with diabetes, such as frequent urination and appetite and thirst issues, as well as general malaise.

It is key that when phytoplankton is used to treat diabetes in an individual that they must maintain the intake since improper maintenance or removal of phytoplankton can cause blood sugar levels to spike to dangerously high levels.

Insulin resistance in diabetic people comes from issues with certain cell membranes (i.e. cells found in the liver) — issues such as oxidization, inflammation and overall toxicity. Phytoplankton has anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory and serves as a detoxifier to these cells and thus removes the resistance to the insulin produced by the body.

The phytoplankton is a treatment, and cure, for both types of diabetes. It will also boost the immune system, which anybody who knows somebody with diabetes or has diabetes, knows this is a critical issue. People with diabetes suffer from lowered immune systems and have to be incredibly careful to infections of all sorts, such as the common cold or infected wounds.

Treatment and cure

Marine phytoplankton has now proven itself to be a treatment and cure in diabetes by reducing the blood sugar levels in our body and by treating the cellular issues which cause cell resistance to the insulin we produce. It is an effective and, most importantly, natural treatment.

Buy Marine Phytoplankton

Hypertension is extremely typical in people with type 2 diabetes, affecting around 20-60% of all patients, relying on age, ethnicity, and body weight. The causes of this type of high-blood pressure are unidentified, but are likely to be a complex combination of genetic, environmental, and other factors. A number of genetic factors or interactions between genes play a major role in essential hypertension and many experts consider that particular chromosomes house the genes responsible for blood pressure regulation.
Whereas kidney damage is commonly the cause of high blood pressure in type 1 diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance are the components associated with hypertension in type 2 diabetes.Obesity is typical in both type 2 diabetes and hypertension and clinical testing signifies tha obesity is the one common element linking insulin, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. However, studies have found a stronger association between hypertension and insulin resistance in thin patients as well as overweight people with type 2 diabetes.

The growth of hypertension in patients with diabetes is particularly dangerous, as it is responsible for up to 75% of diabetic cardiovascular complications, including coronary arterydisease, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. Hypertension is also believed to play a substantial role in the development of retinopathy (eye damage), nephropathy (kidney disease), and possiblyneuropathy (nerve damage).

The gas nitric oxide also plays a predominant role in hypertension. It can be developed in the body, influencing the smooth muscle cells that line blood vessels by keeping them relaxed and versatile. It may also help prevent blood clotting. Low levels of nitric oxide have been observed in people with high blood pressure (particularly in African Americans) and may be a significant factor in essential hypertension.

Clinical testing and research has explored the benefits of lowering blood pressure in individuals with diabetes, such as a reduction in cardiovascular disease, stroke, or nephropathyevents. In more aged individuals with type 2 diabetes, females in particular, the incidence of heart failure is rapidly increasing, and hypertension is often the primary cause. Additionally, aside from diabetes, hypertension is the main cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Coexisting hypertension and diabetes is a common clinical scenario that can ignite a vicious routine of rising blood pressure, increasing renal damage, and increased cardiovascular morbidity. therapy of hypertension often requires multiple drugs to effectively lessen and prevent complications of diabetes. In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the impact of blood pressure control onmicrovascular and macrovascular health may be equal to or even greater than that of strictglycemic control.

Those who have type 2 diabetes must also be aware of secondary hypertension, which has recognizable causes that are usually treatable or reversible. There are a number of medical circumstances that can cause secondary high blood pressure. The most common of which is kidney disease, even though it occurs more frequently in older diabetics. Sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing briefly ceases repeatedly during sleep, is also highly connected with hypertension. A weak but still higher than normal association with high blood pressure has even been observed in those who snore or have mild sleep apnea. The link between sleep apnea and hypertension is thought to be largely due to obesity, major studies are finding a higher rate of hypertension in people with sleep apnea regardless of their weight. Treating sleep apnea with a device regarded as nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may have modest benefits on blood pressure

as well. Additionally, some medical conditions may add to momentary hypertension such as cirrhosis, pregnancy, and Cushing’s disease.

To help temporarily aid blood-pressure, people with type 2 diabetes can attain certain prescription and over-the-counter medication. This includes cough medicines that contain pseudoephedrine, oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Other causes of secondary hypertension in type 2 diabetics include stress and vigorous exercise, as well as caffeine, cigarettes, and alcohol, all ofwhich could increase the risk of stroke if not limited.

A recent study evaluated the impact of regular use of antacid medications on body weight and BMI. In this study, 24people with GERD (reflux disease) were followed for 2 years and compared to 24 control subjects. At the beginning of the study there were no differences in body weight and BMI between the study groups . One group of people was placed on antacid medications to treat their heartburn while the control group was simply counseled on lifestyle and diet . At the end of the two-year study , 70% of the treatment group had gained approximately 8 pounds compared to the control group whose weight and BMI were unchanged.

We don’t quite understand why antacid medications seem to cause people to store fat . Some scientists believe that heartburn medications decrease our ability to digest and absorb proteins which contains amino acids such as tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine. A deficiency in these amino acids may decrease the production of important brain chemicals that regulate appetite and metabolism. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin ; the brain chemical that allows you to feel “happy”. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that is used in the production of thyroid hormone and dopamine; two compounds the impact metabolism and satiety. Phenylalanine plays a role in the production of endorphins, a natural compound, similar to morphine, that makes you feel good. It is also possible that poor digestion of proteins may result in a functional deficiency of amino acids needed to maintain your muscle mass and thus metabolism.

Remember, many “diseases” are your body’s way of telling you that something is out of balance. Treating these “diseases” with medications often covers up the underlined problem, and in doing so, sets the stage for other health iproblems . Don’t get me wrong, I am not against the use of pharmaceuticals ; I’m against sticking our head in the sand and assuming that those medications are fixing the real problem.

Reflux disease can be an indication of poor digestion . In many people, reflux disease indicates that their body does not produce enough acid rather than too much stomach acid. Many things can cause the body to decrease acid production or neutralize existing acid, such as: heart medications, calcium supplements, stress, excess fluids with meals, to name a few.

The purpose of this article is to bring light to the connection between heartburn medications and weight gain. If you are currently taking these medications, I would seek out the assistance of a physician who is well schooled in natural approaches to health. Such a practitioner could help you discover the underlined cause of your heartburn issue so that the need for the medication could go away.

One final note; abruptly stopping an antacid medication could result in a rebound effect that could cause serious reflux. Always discuss your plans with a physician prior to changing or stopping a medication. For more information I recommend seeking out a weight loss blog or weight loss podcast that can shed further light on this connection.

Diabetes is a critical health care problem for many people throughout the world. This decreases quality of life and, oftentimes, it can also shorten one’s existence. The good news is that when you identify the seriousness of being a diabetic and take constructive steps toward controlling it all of these things above decrease in importance.

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism. The way our bodies use digested meals for growth and energy. Diabetes is assigned to long-term complications that affect nearly every part of the body. Diabetes is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death as well as disability in the United States.

Conventional Treatment

Insulin was the first, and remains the primary means of treatment for Type 1 diabetes and it is administered by subcutaneous injection. This method is necessary since insulin is destroyed by gastric stomach secretions when it’s taken by mouth. Insulin shots must be balanced with meals and daily activities, and blood sugar levels must be closely monitored through frequent blood sugar testing. Many diabetics need inject insulin only one time a day; others require two or more injections. The usual time for any dose of insulin is before breakfast. The dosage is initially established according to the severity of the condition, but it frequently has to be reassessed as one or another from the variables in the person’s condition changes.

Medicines for Type2 Diabetes

Metformin this is often the first medicine that is advised for type 2 diabetes. It mainly functions by reducing the amount of glucose that the liver releases into the bloodstream.

Sulphonylureas for example, glibelclamide, gliclazide, glimerpirizide, glipizide, gliquidone, increase the amount of insulin produced by your pancreas. They also make your body’s cells more sensitive to insulin so that more glucose is taken up from the blood.

Type 1 (Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus)

Type 1 diabetes is actually treated with intensive insulin therapy. This type of treatment is designed to achieve near-normal blood sugars safely – while keeping the episodes of reduced blood sugars (”insulin reactions”) to a minimum. Insulin therapy includes:

* Multiple Daily Injections of Blood insulin (Flexibility is important!). * Utilization of Insulin Pens or Sends. * Use of new kind of insulin: Lispro or Humlog (extremely fast-acting) – replaces regular insulin.

Diabetes Medicines

Sulfonylureas: Glyburide (Micronase, Diabeta) and Glipizide (Glucotrol). Traditional medicines – cheap, easy to take, work well with many people. Stimulates insulin release from the pancreas. Problems: Doesn’t always achieve normal blood sugars and may cause low blood sugars. Metformin (Glucophage): Used in Europe for many years. Decreases sugar production by the liver, which plays a role in elevated blood sugar levels. Works well with blood insulin. Problems: Causes gastro-intestinal upset in certain, and cannot be used if you have serious heart or kidney problems.

People with diabetes will experience many long-term and heavy complications. These complications may affect virtually every part of the body from the feet and thighs to the internal organs.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or use insulin properly therefore it is up to you and your physician to learn how to manipulate the actual functions of your body properly to offset or reduce the complications of uncontrolled diabetes. With proper control you are able to still live a healthy and long life but it helps to be considered a fanatic about controlling your diabetes.
