  There were many new exciting developments last year in the web design world, with one of the main players being responsive design. And it’s no wonder really – In a world were mobile browsing is on the rise and most of us own or have access to a smart phone or tablet, something as flexible and as ground breaking as responsive design was always going to be a huge success. It takes the hassle out of web design (essentially, I mean that’s the point right?) in that we can design one website, and it’ll work across multiple platforms, shapes and sizes – no matter what we’re browsing on. Whether that be a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a desktop computer. The thing is though, it’s not all that great – and whilst I keep hearing about the benefits of this technique, no one seems to be talking about the negatives. And believe me, I’ve found a few that have tripped me up at times. So here they are – laid out for all to see. Five pitfalls that responsive design throws up – and how you can deal with them when the time comes. 1.     It uses up CPU and memory The idea of responsive design is that each individual devices resizes you website to fit its screen and size. This is all very well and good in theory – but think about how many images you have on your site, and think about your poor consumer and their memory and CPU as their devices not only downloads the original image, but then translates it, resizes it and formats it into the size it needs. This is something that takes up both CPU and memory, and it’s something (unfortunately) you can’t easily get around. Whilst many people may not notice this when browsing, for those who do – it’s a surefire way to loose visitors. After all, for people on mobile contracts who have limited data, you can’t go round eating it all up every time they decide to visit your website.  2.     Media Queries are the bane of my life Media Queries are the things that do the translation for responsive resign, and they are found in the browser your user is using to access your site from whatever tablet they’re prone to. Well, that’s all very well and good – but tell me, what do you do when they’re using a browser so old that media queries aren’t in fact present? Well, you can’t do anything. The thing is, some older browsers that haven’t been update in a while – don’t have these media queries – which means your website goes from being a super flexible design, to being annoying inflexible and unreadable. 3.     Sometimes it just doesn’t cooperate No matter how hard you try with new technology like this, there are always going to be devices that don’t cooperate with you design, especially when you’ve chosen to opt for responsive. The technology industry is evolving so fast too, that new tablets and phones are popping up almost weekly on the market. This makes it hard to keep up – and this can lead to unsuccessful translation in some devices. No matter how hard you try to make it work! 4.     Need for Speed Because of all the variety in responsive design, you never know if someone is going to look at the site from a mobile or from a desktop. And here throws up another difficulty with the whole idea. Mobile speed and desktop speed are very different, and quite often it’s the speed of the connection that effects just how much someone enjoys the browsing experience. Browsing a responsive website on a mobile phone might be completely successful and super fast – but that might only be because of how great their 3G connection is. What is their Internet connection is terrible? Well, then they’re going to experience a very long wait potentially, waiting for the site to load. The frustrating thing is, you can’t really have control of this either – as it’s usually down to the provided of the Wi-Fi or 3G. It’s always worth making sure you’re with a good hosting provider too on this note too – as every little helps. Do your research and find one with good reviews regarding responsive design, or mobile browsing. 5.     It takes so much longer It’s no secret that newer technology like this, takes longer to master and therefore the projects can often take longer to complete too. Some clients may get frustrated waiting longer for responsive design – so make sure you’re cleared it with them before you go ahead with it. Ensure they understand the time constraints and ensure you give them a realistic expectation to work with. Thesis theme is making the buzz very fast but the question is, thesis or genesis, which is more effective? There is no such thing as best theme and “best” can depend on your need, if you want more SEO you might not care about design so far you have traffic and if all that matters to you is design you have no concern with SEO. By the time you finish reading this post you should be able to conclude which theme is best for you.

Design

When it comes to choosing a theme many people prefer having a cool design, otherwise, they won’t bother buying a theme. Also in the thesis vs. genesis debate we might want to factor in the design. As far as design is concerned genesis theme is presently the best because you can still use its main theme without bothering about poor design but with thesis you won’t have a great design if either you don’t have coding knowledge or you don’t buy a framework. Thesis v/s Genesis Theme Also, using the default options and customizations you will be able to get more from the genesis wordpress theme than the thesis wordpress theme. So as far as design is concerned,  Thesis beats Genesis !

Loading Speed

Another critical element when it comes to choosing a website template is the loading time/speed and this is a very important factor especially to your readers in countries with poor internet connectivity. In the case of loading speed thesis theme is better than genesis theme. I have tested the genesis theme on my blog and I presently use thesis, it is also important not to base my conclusion on my site only but I also tested several other genesis vs. thesis sites but I noticed that the thesis theme is faster.

SEO

One thing people always talk about when they want to buy wordpress themes is the theme’s support for SEO. I actually don’t believe a theme is best or worst for SEO, SEO is based on so many factors and the factor that makes a theme important is a somehow minor factor, that is the theme code. The most important factor in SEO is links so it doesn’t matter whether you use thesis or genesis or woothemes, they won’t help you rank better, it is your knowledge and action that will help you rank better! There is a lot of talk about Internet marketing and the new era of social media. It is now easier than ever before to create accounts on many infamous social websites to build up your own brand. But this technique requires strategy and a bit of insight into the WWW community. Classic Digg v3 design It is my goal in this article to focus on a few concrete aspects of marketing via the Internet. Specifically I’d like to look into social media buttons and badges for sharing links from your website. These can easily produce viral content where your links are passed through dozens if not hundreds or thousands of different user profiles. Using these techniques you can quickly build up a presence for your personal website or online blog.

Driving Social Markets

It’s not just enough to throw up a few badges onto your website and expect to see results. Users will really need to enjoy your content and want to share it on their own account. The best way to get them interested is by creating a sense of popularity on your links. Depending on which badges you’re using it may be smart to share the links on your own accounts first. When visitors land on your page and notice blank sharing badges it’s almost a turnoff in most cases. Unless your site is already pulling hundreds of thousands of pageviews monthly you just can’t pull enough traffic to start a natural marketing campaign. Icon Set Freebie glossy social icons There are a few staple websites to consider when first implementing these badges. Facebook and Twitter are easily the two most popular networks which can bring in a lot of attention. If you have a couple different Twitter or FB accounts don’t be afraid to get the ball rolling! Presence on Social News

Let’s now take a moment to look into some of the more popular websites for social media sharing. Viral content can only work when your link goes popular on a heavily trafficked social community. This used to be the case on digg.com except their new V4 redesign has killed a lot of the core traffic. Many old-fashioned Diggers have actually moved onto the website Reddit. The community is built around many subreddits on different topics which can give you a fairer shot at getting your article popular. Check out their buttons page to see all the different styles and implementations you can choose from. Reddit Alien social media buttons and badges sharing Other than social news there are tons and tons of solutions for marketers. You need to take a second and think about what your targeted visitors would most likely be using. As an example, the social news community DZone is focused on application development and server hardware. So your photography blog probably wouldn’t do very well – but a web development blog such as Developer Drive could see an enormous amount of traffic.

Some Alternative Examples

Other than social news communities there are other networks which allow you to implement a badge-style share icon. It’s still true that not all of these networks will work for everybody. It may just take some trial-and-error before you figure out which badges appeal to your target market. Consider these options if you are running a blog and wish to try out a different set of networks & marketing tools.

How to Go Viral

This process is more of a waiting game than anything else. You can only actively share your articles between so many accounts in one day. Viral web traffic is built through repetition and most importantly a dedicated fan base. You need to continually market your website and draw attention over a few weeks. Whether this means posting new blog content or updating with fresh downloads/freebies – either way you need to offer something to keep drawing in visitors over time. Prove to your audience that your website is going to be around for the long haul. This will naturally build credibility with a finicky userbase. YouTube video streaming generation kids There is no “set” time limit for expecting content on your website to go viral. It has a lot to do with the quality of your posts, but the stars also need to align in the proper order. Just keep submitting your content around the web to your favorite social media networks and eventually one of your posts will catch on. You’ll notice a huge spike in traffic from some of the bigger networks like Facebook and Google – maybe even a few websites you’ve never heard of before!

Connect with Other Users
