he recommended way to enable graphical mode on RHEL V7 is to install first following packages

# yum groupinstall gnome-desktop x11 fonts

Alternatively you can also target the "Server with GUI" group instead.

# yum groupinstall "Server with GUI"

Once all required packages are installed , we need to configure to start GNOME related services automatically at system reboot.

Installing AIX Lpars using NIM server

Activate Lpar profile , go to SMS menu and then configure remote IPL settings by defining client IP address, Server IP address and gateway IP address. You can additionally execute ping test as well as shown below.

1.2.5. After Lpar boots and get AIX bootable image from NIM server , mksysb restoration will automatically start. You may have point to correct destination disk for mksysb restoration purpose.

1.2.6. After mksysb image has been restored on client Lpar , it will automatically get its hostname and IP address as defined on NIM master server. You can change that IP address , if needed.

1.2.7. If no TCPIP change is required , go to smitty nim and then configure client communication services where you have to specify nimsh as “future” communication protocol between NIM master server and NIM client.

FCOE - A new Trend in Storage world

FCOE or Fiber channel over ethernet is one of the newest technology which was introduced as convergence for ethernet and Fiber traffic. What it actually means in simpler words that hosts or servers are using some special type of adapters or Modules ( in Blade center world ) which is capable of carrying ethernet and FC traffic on same set of physical ports.
The Host OS is usually running some device driver for these special adapters which present this adapter as two virtual adapters. One virtual adapter is for ethernet traffic while other virtual adapters is for FC traffic.

Now these FCOE adapters usually connect to special kind of Ethernet Switches with FCOE ports . Example would be Cisco 5000 series switches.

The Cisco switches can then be configured in NPV or Switch mode where VLAN to VSAN mappings allow FC traffic to flow towards SAN switches ( like Cisco MDS or Brocade switches). Connections between Ethernet and FC switches can be either FCOE or FC , although FC connections are more preferred as having FCOE connections between ethernet and FC switches will result in FCOE hops which might impact on performance if not properly sized.

Islamic Concept of GOD

While living in non muslim part of the world , one question which i came across very often is that what is Islamic concept of GOD? Unfortunately most of my non muslim friends believes that Muslims worships some "arabic" God. In other words , they believe that Islamic concept of GOD is very different from christian or Jews concept of GOD.

Let me correct the concept. We have to look into the original concept of GOD in Christianity and Judaism .The original concept of GOD in all of these religions were same, which is one and only one GOD.

We ,as Muslim, also believe in one and only GOD. We believe that GOD is one and only one ( no son , no father) and he is GOD of all humanity and prophets ( prophet Moses, prophet Christ Prophet Jones , prophet Noah Prophet David , Prophet Abraham and Prophet Muhammad). All of these prophets came with same message and message was initially same "come to one GOD, he who is the one creator of whole universe and all mankind". With the passage of time ,when human beings kept confusing and kept making changes in this message on their own ( like concept of 3 Gods instead of one was introduced by christian scholars and priests long after Christ ) , GOD kept sending same message again and again with his messengers or prophets. This process ended with Prophet Muhammad till the day of judgement.

For some non Muslim friends , the name "ALLAH" is confusing. They think that Muslims worship a different GOD. Let me clarify this point as well. In fact , name ALLAH is a arabic name of GOD , which actually points to one and only one GOD. The almighty GOD , the almighty ALLAH, creator of whole universe, human being , mountains , rivers and lakes is the GOD of all beloved prophets.

Coming back to the name "Allah", It is a known fact that every language has one or more terms that are used in reference to God and sometimes to lesser deities. This is not the case with Allah. Allah is the personal name of the One true God. Nothing else can be called Allah. The term has no plural or gender. This shows its uniqueness when compared with the word god which can be made plural, gods, or feminine, goddess. It is interesting to notice that Allah is the personal name of God in Aramaic, the language of Jesus and a sister language of Arabic.

The One true God is a reflection of the unique concept that Islam associates with God. To a Muslim, Allah is the Almighty, Creator and Sustainer of the universe, Who is similar to nothing and nothing is comparable to Him. The Prophet Muhammad was asked by his contemporaries about Allah; the answer came directly from God Himself in the form of a short chapter of the Quran, which is considered the essence of the unity or the motto of monotheism. This is chapter 112 which reads:

"In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate.
Say (O Muhammad) He is God the One God, the Everlasting Refuge, who has not begotten, nor has been begotten, and equal to Him is not anyone."

Some non-Muslims allege that God in Islam is a stern and cruel God who demands to be obeyed fully. He is not loving and kind. Nothing can be farther from truth than this allegation. It is enough to know that, with the exception of one, each of the 114 chapters of the Quran begins with the verse: "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate." In one of the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) we are told that "God is more loving and kinder than a mother to her dear child."

But God is also Just. Hence evildoers and sinners must have their share of punishment and the virtuous, His bounties and favors. Actually God's attribute of Mercy has full manifestation in His attribute of Justice. People suffering throughout their lives for His sake and people oppressing and exploiting other people all their lives should not receive similar treatment from their Lord. Expecting similar treatment for them will amount to negating the very belief in the accountability of man in the Hereafter and thereby negating all the incentives for a moral and virtuous life in this world. The following Quranic verses are very clear and straightforward in this respect:

"Verily, for the Righteous are gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord. Shall We then treat the people of Faith like the people of Sin? What is the matter with you? How judge you?" (68:34-36)

Islam rejects characterizing God in any human form or depicting Him as favoring certain individuals or nations on the basis of wealth, power or race. He created the human beings as equals. They may distinguish themselves and get His favor through virtue and piety only.

The concept that God rested in the seventh day of creation, that God wrestled with one of His soldiers, that God is an envious plotter against mankind, or that God is incarnate in any human being are considered blasphemy from the Islamic point of view.

The unique usage of Allah as a personal name of God is a reflection of Islam's emphasis on the purity of the belief in God which is the essence of the message of all God's messengers. Because of this, Islam considers associating any deity or personality with God as a deadly sin which God will never forgive, despite the fact He may forgive all other sins.

[Note that what is meant above applies ONLY to those people who die in a state wherein they are associating others with God. The repentance of those who yet live is acceptable to God if He wills. - MSA of USC]

The Creator must be of a different nature from the things created because if he is of the same nature as they are, he will be temporal and will therefore need a maker. It follows that nothing is like Him. If the maker is not temporal, then he must be eternal. But if he is eternal, he cannot be caused, and if nothing outside him causes him to continue to exist, which means that he must be self-sufficient. And if the does not depend on anything for the continuance of his own existence, then this existence can have no end. The Creator is therefore eternal and everlasting: "He is the First and the Last."

He is Self-Sufficient or Self-Subsistent or, to use a Quranic term, Al-Qayyum. The Creator does not create only in the sense of bringing things into being, He also preserves them and takes them out of existence and is the ultimate cause of whatever happens to them.

"God is the Creator of everything. He is the guardian over everything. Unto Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth." (39:62, 63)

"No creature is there crawling on the earth, but its provision rests on God. He knows its lodging place and it repository." (11:6)

Displaying Performance Statistics across pSeries CEC

In last few days , i was trying to find out a simple way to display performance statistics across multiple Lpars in one Pseries CEC or in more simpler words across whole Pseries Lpar.

Quite recently -C parameter is added to both topas and nmon command which displays performance statistics across multiple Lpars in one CEC or pseries Server.

One of the useful tip of using CEC capability with Nmon Analyzer is available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/WikiPtype/nmon but the fact is that -C parameter is available on real time view of topas and nmon command as well.

IBM Tivoli Productivity Center and SAN Switches performance

Last month i got oppurtunity to configure IrulBM TPC to get the performance statistics from SAN switches.

Following are the main points which you should keep in your mind , when you try to get performance data from Brocade switches using IBM TPC.

1. First , you should have license of IBM TPC Standard Edition . IBM TPC basic edition does not have capability of gathering performance data.

2. Second , for gathering performance data from Brocade switches , you should configure switches as out of band fabric agents , scan them and then install & configure Brocade SMI-S agent. The SMI-S agent from Brocade , should be installed and configured to get in-depth information from switches/fabrics.

How to enable Web Access to HMC

It is very easy to configure IBM HMC to allow web based access. You have to just modify firewall settings on HMC to " Allow Remote Access".

This can be done in following way:

Go to HMC management console: Select " HMC Management" ---> "Change Network Settings" ----> Select Ethernet Adapter ( one with public IP Address) ---> Then select "Secure Remote Access" option and enable it.

You have to restart HMC to make these changes effective

procedures needed to locate I/O slots that can be moved dynamically between logical partitions (LPAR) on a HMC managed system p server as as follows

- Identify the owner of the I/O slot for the device you need to managed and then logically remove the PCI device from the owning operating system. You have to find out the PCI device associated with the physical slot, for which you can execute following command in AIX

lsslot -c slot

In VIOS (virtual I/O server)
lsdev -slots

-- Removed the PCI device and all child devices

Before the I/O slot removal, you must delete the PCI adapter device and all its child devices from AIX. Given that ent2 in the slot U1.5-P1-I5 in the previous example is not used, the devices could be removed using the following command as the root user on the partition.

After the devices have been removed from AIX, the I/O slot can be
removed from the partition using the graphical user interface or command line interface on the HMC.

Note: Any PCI slots defined as required are not eligible for the DLPAR operation.

How can I move my DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive from one LPAR to another?

Answer

If you don’t know which LPAR owns the CD-ROM drive, use the HMC manager or WEBSM tool.
Select the managed system and open “Properties”.
Select the “I/O” tab. Look for the I/O device with the description “Other Mass Storage Controller” and read the “Owner” field. This will show the LPAR currently owning that device.

ON THE SOURCE SYSTEM:

1. Find the parent adapter of the DVD or CD device:

$ lsdev -Cl cd0 -F parent
ide0

2. Find the slot containing the IDE bus:

$ lsslot -c slot
# Slot Description Device(s)
U787B.001.DNWG2AB-P1-T16 Logical I/O Slot pci1 ide0
U9133.55A.105C2EH-V7-C0 Virtual I/O Slot vsa0
U9133.55A.105C2EH-V7-C2 Virtual I/O Slot ent0

ON THE HMC:

Select the LPAR currently owning the CD-ROM, and in the Actions menu select:
Dynamic Logical Partitioning -> Physical Adapters -> Move or Remove
Select the adapter for “Other Mass Storage Controller” and move to the desired target LPAR.
This will perform a DLPAR operation on both the source and target LPAR.

ON THE TARGET SYSTEM:

Log in as root and run
# cfgmgr

The CD-ROM device should show up now
# lsdev -C | grep cd
cd0 Available 1G-19-00 IDE DVD-ROM Drive

How to extend LVM based Filesystem in Linux?

A major question which came in Linux Administrators minds is that what will happen if all space within a crtical disk become full.
No worry! If you are using Linux LVM , then you can do it online as follows
1. Extend the space for LUN from storage subsystem management software

2. Rescan your partition table
#partprobe
3. Now the output of
#fdisk -l /dev/sdc

should show the extended size of Lun ( if not , then sorry your Linux kernel is not supporting online extension and you have to restart the server)

4. extend the pv
#pvresize /dev/sdc

5. extend the lv
lvextend -l 100% FREE /dev/VG01/lvdata01

6. Extend the fileystem

ext2online /dev/mapper/VG01/lvdata01

and to make sure finally verify through "df" command

Installaing rpms from iso file

Need to know , how to install rpms from an iso file ... easy job , just tarnsfer iso image file to your linux partition ( let say by ftp )and then mount as follows mount -o loop /tmp/RHEL.iso /mnt/cd1 and then you will get whole Linux image inside /mnt/cd1 directory.

Next step would be to create a repo configuration file like below

vi /etc/yum.repos.d/rhe72.repo

Remote Graphical Desktop on RHEL-5 , XDMCP and Xwindows

Sometimes ,it happens that nothing works for you. You struggle and struggle again for a task which seems very very easy for you.
It happened to me few days ago when i was trying to do some graphical installation on my VMWare based RHEL-5 and was not able to do see graphical screen properly due to some resolution issues.

So after trying for hours and hours to fix this resolution issue, i finally decided to try some remote desktop software ( which are commonly as xwindows software ) on my windows machine .

It was a hard selection as nowadays so many xwindows software available on internet. Off course ideas was to use some freely available software so i selected cygwin/X for this purpose.
Cygwin/X installation/download was pretty simple however main trick was to select specific packages from x11 category. I took help from cygwin/x installation/user guide and installed this siftware very easily.

Then next step was to start cygwin bash shell and on this bash shell i tried

xwin -query 192.168.1.234 ( which was IP address of my RHEL-5), but no success.

i was sure that xwin command was right , as all cygwin manuals point to same command. After hours and hours effort , i concluded that Linux is not opening any remote graphical sessions from cygwin , as due to new RHEL-5 security standards XDCMP protocol is disabled by default.
So then i modified the file /etc/gdm/custom.conf and under the [xdmcp] section, added this line: Enable=true

Finally restarted GDM by using command gdm-restart

and then tried same xwin command from cygwin ,,,, Ahh it was successfull and finally i got graphical remote desktop on my windows machine connecting to Linux server.Thanks google again!!!

Recreate Bootable Image on RHEL and AIX

To recreate bootable image on aix , you have to simply execute

bosboot -ad /dev/hdiskx

This hdiskx could be hdisk0 or hdisk1 ( depending upon output of your lslv -m hd5 command ). In case of mirroring , you have to execute the same command against both disks in rootvg.

In case of RHEL, mkinitrd command can do the same function for you!!!

mkinitrd -v -f /boot/xxx.img xxx

where xxx=you kernel version.

How to backup your Brocade SAN switches

Many customers repeatedly ask me same question "How we can take backup for configuration of our Brocade SAN switches"?

Now doubt , it is important to take configuration of your san switches which includes fabric configuration , zones information etc.

Now for that purpose ,you may use the FOS command: configupload.

For this, you also need to get a ftp server that is contactable by your switches management IP. This FTP server can be any windows 2000 server or even your own workstation. Now if you want your own workstation to act as FTP server, you have to download ftp server softwares which include both free and commercial software like winftp.

When you execute the configupload command from your SAN switch FOS command line, you will have to specify the server ip, user name, password and directory where you want to keep the files.

In next blog entry , i will highlight, how we can automate this process so that SAN admins would not have to execute configupload command manually.

rmnod.. is there any command like that on AIX?

Yesterday i made a mistake on AIX 6.1 system.. I created two special devices on same hdisk , while creating devices using mknod command.
These devices had to be used for Oracle ARC implementation. While searching on internet for any command like rmnod , i realized that there is no such command available atleast on AIX. Some variants of linux do have rmnod command , but not AIX...

So what should be solution? After long research i concluded that best way to resolve this problem would be to delete hdisk device itslef. I deleted the device using rmdev -dl hdisk7 and all corresponding special devices ( which i created using mknod command ) were gone... Happ enough result!!

Easiest way to calculate SAN data transfer rate from AIX

In order to check how much data throughput speed from your FC connections of AIX servers to any san attached storage

1. Identify any filesystem , created on any vg residing on SAN disks ( let say /data1)

2. time dd if=/dev/zero of=/data1/testfile bs=32768 count=30000

It will create around 10 GB file in /data1 so make sure you have enough space there. After getting value of time period required to copy such file , you can divide this size by time to get the data transfer speed in Mb/Sec.

For example , if real time value returned by time command output results around 1 min so value of data transfer would be 10x1024/60= 170 Mb/sec.
