The cause for depression is not so defined. The condition can be mild to severe, but is always serious Here are a few things to look for if you or someone you love is suspected of having depression.

Just less than ten percent of the population of America suffers bouts of depression each year. Depression is a serious illness, which affects daily living and disrupts family life. This disorder takes control of the mind. Functionally, it causes mood swings, sleeplessness, loss of appetite and a sense of deep despair.

As depression’s symptoms vary so does the severity over time. Experts tell us that depression can be hereditary, stress or grave illness. There are also other reasons for depression, such as alcohol, drugs, medicines, certain diseases or even mental illness. Due to menopause, miscarriage, pregnancy, menstrual changes and hormonal changes women seem to have more depression than men do.

Common symptoms of depression are:

Feelings of sadness for a lengthy time for no apparent reason.

Negative thoughts toward things you used to enjoy

Thinking things are always your fault.

Loss of motivation, energy, and pleasure in simple activities.

Feelings of being inadequate; helplessness.

Problems concentrating or getting focused at work, or with daily routines.

Sleeping too much, or insomnia

Having restlessness and feelings of anxiety.

Physical pain with no sign of illness.

A desire to hurt yourself or suicidal inclinations.

Now understand, most people can experience feelings like these every once in a while. If you or someone you know is experiencing more than two of these symptoms for an extended period of time, please talk to someone. Sometimes just sharing your feelings can help. Other times you will need to see a doctor for a true diagnosis and to get on the road to feeling better.

Another form of this disorder causes just the opposite in mood and behavior.

Common symptoms of Mania are:

An extreme feeling of happiness; euphoria

A very high opinion of self worth or abilities

Excessive talking, rapid speech

High energy level

Inability to sleep for very long

Reckless behavior like over spending, reckless driving or indiscriminate sex.

Short temper, irritability to distractions

Anxiety, racing thoughts

Having cycles of both set of these symptoms is Called Bipolar

Bipolar disorder has been sub categorized according to how often and how long each cycle lasts in a time period. Bipolar can be so severe that all the symptoms are mixed together. How exasperating and exhausting this could be. Hospitalization may be required in some cases if daily functioning is impaired.

If you or someone you know is suspected of having depression, please seek the help of a medical doctor. Do not live your life in despair. Help is available. Seek help today.

Overcoming depression is a challenge people face every day. However, most of these people are quite unaware that how you think of a situation inevitably is what makes it. Learn how and why you should think positively at all times as a means of overcoming depressing situations before they overwhelm you.

Friends: “Above all else, guard you heart for it’s the well-spring of life”

I remember telling an associate this quote once and his response (this from a ‘straight out the tough streets of Chicago’ guy) was: “That is deep…!”

He was going through a depressing situation of his life and was discussing it with me, we talked about methods of overcoming depression and I thought of that verse. Yes folks, it’s a verse from the Bible, and it is one of the most powerful ones that can be affirmed or repeated for overcoming depression through one’s thoughts.

With the several side-effects associated with synthetic drugs for treating depression, it is quite necessary to say seeking alternative methods of depression treatment will be more than adequate and wise for overcoming depression. One of these alternatives is changing one’s thinking (and speaking) habits about life and its challenges.

As its name suggests, positive thinking is a habit of accepting first that there are problems and challenges we may be facing, but in order to overcome them to avoid the inevitable depression that may result, we must think with the mind-frame of success and victory in mind. When using this for overcoming depression and our challenges, it involves forcefully saturating our minds with positive thoughts and affirmations in the aim of overshadowing the negative pessimistic thoughts about the depressing situations.

Always seek the good out of every situation and this at times may require some real action on our parts. Analyze the problems, ask why it may be happening, what you may have done to provoke or not prevent it from occurring, your options of being able to fix it and who you may have to turn to for help.

Seeking spiritual guidance and help while using positive thinking for overcoming depression, is also a great suggestion. As overlooked as the Bible may be in the present ages (or religion/spirituality period), it does contain a lot of helpful affirmations one can repeat mantra-like in thoughts and speech and with the right attitude and you almost inevitably find the answer to your problems. Is this quackery or magic? No. Your thinking process creates your world. Remember: “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he…”

Other things to keep in mind when using positive thinking for overcoming depression are to employ the proven methods of a proper diet and exercise to create a healthy body and consequently a clearer and healthier mind which will be more capable as a consequence for overcoming depression.

Will positive thinking always work? It will be safe to say, like with anything else, you will only get out of it what you put into it. However, with the right attitude and mind-frame, it sure will beat overcoming depression through a bunch of harmful drugs.

Do keep in mind though, it is the first step (thinking right that is) to solving a problem. Moreover, as far as problems in life remember in the words of Charles de Gaulle: “Difficulties attracts the man of character because it is in embracing it that he realizes himself!”

Life’s problems should act as spur for action not running away from them. Considering this, positive thinking obviously is the first step to ensuring that you make the right move for overcoming depression and challenges in life.

According to your faith (thoughts and actions), be it unto you.

There are over eleven million people in the United States alone that suffer from depression. So if you are reading this understand you are not alone. Depression is a mental disorder that can affect your personal, school, and work life. Some of the signs of depression are an intense feeling of hopelessness, inability to take pleasure out of little things in life, a lack of ambition, and loss of mental focus. While depression affects both genders, it is strongest in women. It doesn’t just affect one group of people. To get an appropriate diagnosis you need to talk to your doctor who may refer you to a therapist.

The most common treatments for depression are a combination of drug therapy and natural remedies. The most common drug treatments used is an anti depressant drug regimen. The ones doctors prescribe the most are: tricyclic, Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MOI’S), and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s). Out of the two SSRI’s are the more commonly used due to the lesser amount of side effects that taking this medication could cause. Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft are the brand names of the most common forms.

Along with a drug regimen, therapy is also advised to people who have depression. Going to therapy can help you come to terms with the fact you have depression and teach you ways to cope with this disorder. You can go to group therapy (if you can share openly with other people) or do one on one with you therapist. Another really good form of therapy that helps people who have problems talking is expressive therapy. There is dance, art, music, or even writing therapy to help people deal with their feelings and emotions. There are also relaxation techniques you can use such as meditation and yoga to help you cope in a healthy way.

Another way to help your depression is to make some lifestyle changes. If you drink or suffer from a substance abuse addiction, seek help immediately. Alcohol and drugs will only help feed your depression and make it worse. You can also change your diet and include more supplements. Fish oil has been proven to help aid depression. There are also vitamins like Zinc and B vitamins that help regulate depression. You can also try other things like acupuncture and even hypnosis has been known to help.

You need to discuss any and all treatment options with your doctor and psychologist. Everyone has different levels of their lows. So deciding what combinations of therapy are right for you is up to you and your healthcare professionals. If vitamin supplements are your best then talk to your doctors and make sure it is healthy. Depression does not have to rule your life. It doesn’t even have to have an effect on your life. But you have to be willing to get help and treatment.

There is a serious condition that must not be left untreated. This condition is caused by chemical imbalances and changes that take place in your brain. Several factors may cause these changes. The condition is called depression.

While we do not know the actual cause for depression, we do know that the condition can cause debilitation. New treatments are available to help cope with this condition. It can be diagnosed properly by a medical doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist.

Medication can help to stabilize the chemical imbalances in the brain, but to help yourself with the symptoms of depression you should to know what they are and how they are affecting your life. You are not alone. Millions of people are hit with this disorder at one time or another. Just don’t ignore the problem because help is available.

Different methods of treatment for depression exist if medication is not a choice. Talk therapy, psychotherapy, meditation, sometimes even aromatherapy can help. Often just talking to someone will help release the feelings you may be keeping bottle up inside.

Talking to someone going through the same thing can often bring about positive reinforcement and new insights to life’s complications

The common symptoms for this medical condition are persistent hopeless feeling, no appetite, sad feelings, weight loss, extreme negativity, sleeplessness, and losing interest in former or new activities, feelings of sadness or loneliness; so many times without apparent reason, over an extended period of time. It’s the inability to find pleasure.

Depression may also cause mood swings which are severe. Some women can suffer from post partum depression after childbirth. With most women, the depression will diminish in a short time and yet others continue to suffer for what can seem like forever. They are unable to bond properly with the new born baby because of overwhelming emotions that can disable them from caring for the child. They need to seek their physician’s help to find a solution.

Bipolar is a type of depression. This is extreme mood swings; intense highs of anxiety, or irritability and lowest of lows of unworthiness and sorrow; like living life is like a ride on a roller coaster.

With diagnosis from a doctor antidepressant medications may be prescribed for these disorders. Depression may be managed, but you need to understand and work on things that trigger the symptoms.

Try joining in activities such as a joke club, where your mind can be diverted and involved in activities that sooth your. It may be necessary for you to change life style; stress can be a major factor.

Negative thinking can be helped with cognitive behavior therapy. Depression can be fought by clearing your mind and empowering it with positive thought and affirmations.

Just don’t give up. You could waste many years throughout your life where you feel very normal and live a very productive lifestyle. Whatever excuses you find to give yourself for not seeing a doctor about this condition should by tempered by remembering that this is a medical condition that needs attention.

You can help yourself in the fight, but you don’t have to do it by yourself.

Depression is a constant feeling of worthlessness, guilt, and the inability to feel pleasure or be happy about anything. It interferes with day-to-day living, by causing inability to concentrate and creates changes in how you eat, sleep, socialize and think of life in general. There could also be physical pain when there is no physical illness. There can even be thoughts of suicide. These symptoms are characteristic to a serious condition called Major Depression

Bipolar disorder is another type of mood disturbance involving episodes of low energy-depression, with sadness and hopelessness, alternating with episodes of high energy- mania with irritability and fiery temper. Mania is an inappropriate sense of euphoria (excitement). There is reckless behavior, little time sleeping, huge amounts of energy, racing thoughts, and rapid speech. It’s an overall out of control behavior. Cycles of depression or manic, can last for days, weeks, months, or even years.

Depression can be caused by low level of a chemical that carries messages through the nervous system in the brain called neurotransmitters. Major life events, like divorce, death, or broken relationship can bring on symptoms.

The good news is professional help is available.

Depression can be successfully treated in most cases. If left untreated, it could be deadly, because the major risk factor is suicide.

Symptoms of depression can be treated with psychotherapy, medicine or sometimes a combination of both. A psychologist can work with someone regarding the cause for depression to helping find ways to allow them to feel better. Cognitive behavior therapy has been effective in treating depression. Depression can be brought on and maintained with negative thinking and this type of therapy can be very effective.

Behavioral Therapy focuses on current behaviors and Interpersonal therapy focuses on current relationships that can affect the illness.

A psychologist or therapist cannot prescribe medicine, so if depression medication is required, (remember the low chemical/brain thing?) a doctor may refer you to a psychiatrist, since he can prescribe and monitor medication dosage.

Certain medications alter the levels of norepinephrine or serotonin which alleviates the symptoms of depression. It may take a week or two before symptoms are noticeably changed and then it may take a few tries to find the medication that works best.

Sometimes medication does not help in severe cases and then a procedure called electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used. It causes a seizure producing a generalized brain activity that releases large amounts of all the neurochemicals. Sometimes this procedure would have to be done twice a week for a month or more to sustain results that are almost immediate.

If medication does work for you, do not discontinue using the medication without your doctor’s orders. Many times persons, especially those who suffer from bi-polar disease will begin to feel better and stop taking their medication. This may lead to a relapse. Your doctor knows when it is safe to start and stop medications. Be sure to consult with him or her.

If you or anyone you know suffers from depression; don’t wait! Seek professional help now.

A disease that affects millions of people in the United States is depression. All sexes, ages, social classes and religions can be affected with this terrible disease. It can have very devastating effects on a person’s life if left untreated. It can appear suddenly or it can show up after a very stressful period in your life like a death in the family, divorce and others.

The symptoms alone are enough to disrupt a person’s ability to do just about anything. Some of the things that can and be affected by this disease are sleeping, studying and the ability to enjoy their life. If a person finds that they have these symptoms and they persist longer than just a few days or weeks the person needs to talk about it with their doctor.

A person afflicted with depression feels isolated and alone. Depression can also affect a person’s social life. They do not feel like going anywhere and just don’t feel social. Please everyone if there is someone that you know suffering from these symptoms reach out let them know that you are here and that you care.

Some other symptoms to pay attention to are sadness, irritability, loss of interest in both activities and hobbies, fatigue, sleep problems, thoughts of death or suicide, guilt feelings and a big weight loss or gain. It can also make an impact on the persons overall physical health.

There is no known cause for depression although some doctors believe it is caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain. The doctor will most likely prescribe medications in this case. If the chemical imbalance is left untreated it can lead to thoughts of suicide. It can also lead to very violent tendencies. It is very important that if you show any of the above signs check with your doctor.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is one of the forms of depression. Light therapy is used to treat SAD since it has been shown that the shortened sunlit days during the winter months is the major cause of this form of depression.

If you feel depression coming into your life, now is the time to find help. Getting help or even asking questions in nothing of which to be ashamed. Depression is a topic that many are afraid to talk about of feel guilty talking about. While much of our world believes that depression is only temporary sadness or the blues, depression is very real. This medical condition is as valid as a broken arm which needs to be set. No one would make you feel guilty about seeking medical attention for that bone that is broken.

Refusing to find help may lead to many years of suffering and the lack of a happy and good life. What a shame to look back and realize that you could have had help years ago, but you have lived in misery for a decade before you took action. Depression cannot always be beaten on your own. You will not regret getting help now rather than waiting.

While depression is treatable, you must begin the journey right now by taking that first step of getting the help that is needed.

People who may be suffering from depression or manic disorders actually exhibit or show each and every kind of symptom of depression that doctors will tell you that depressed people have. Sometimes it’s actually quite easy to overlook such symptoms and not be able to help one’s self or others who are suffering from depression for that matter.

There are actually a lot of symptoms of depression that depressed people may actually posses but they don’t have to suffer from each and every one of them before you actually help them get diagnosed and be treated for this illness. Also, since symptoms of depression actually vary, the time of their “attacks” varies as well.

Here are some common examples of symptoms of depression:

Prolonged period of sadness or not feeling “up to it,” people who are always feeling not in the mood, who’d rather mope around the house and feel sorry for one’s self is the best example for this symptom of depression.

Feels hopeless, perennial pessimist: speaking of feeling sorry for one’s self, another common symptom of depression is when a person actually feels like he/she has nothing to look forward to in his or her life. As for being the perennial pessimist, those who show this symptom of depression are usually very negative about things, again, the feeling of hopelessness comes in to mind.

Guilt-driven, loss of self-worth and helplessness: other symptoms of depression that can be easily seen on people who prefer to mope around all day long are these. Whenever a person feels so guilty over something, that actually makes one a very sad person who feels like he or she doesn’t deserve to be happy. Thus, the loss of self-worth, if that person feels like he or she isn’t worthy of being happy or enjoying one’s self then that’s clear tell-tale symptom of depression. Helplessness also contribute to being depressed, when assuming that things won’t simply go your way, it’s already a clear saying that you have absolutely no hope in your body at all.

Isn’t interested in finding or taking pleasure; just dropping the hobbies as well as the other things that one used to enjoy: this tell-tale symptom of depression just shows how depressed a person can be, if one is actually too sad to take pleasure even in the very things that one loves then that person is seriously lacking something, rather, that person might well have caught the depression bug.

Fatigue, always tired: people suffering from depression, since they’ve lost whatever interest in life that they may have had before are actually lacking of physical energy at all times, if one would prefer to just mope around, probably won’t even eat not get enough sleep, a depressed person may well be on their way to not just a mental illness but depression can actually be terrible for one’s physical health as well.

Having trouble concentrating, having bad memory and is indecisive: a person who is suffering from depression easily gives away this tell-tale symptom of depression. Wherein one’s lack of interest with regards to the outside world or for just about anything for that matter can lead to that person’s inability to lose track of things and actually not be able to remember things that happened or what other people said. Lack of interest actually makes depressed people very inattentive.

There are actually more symptoms of depression that can actually help you see if a person (or you) needs to be brought to the doctor to get some help when it comes to depression: lacking sleep, sleeping too much or waking up at wee hours of the morning are all symptoms of depression (if it happens on a daily basis), appetite loss as well as eating too much may show one’s lack of enthusiasm for life. Be weary of sudden weight loss or weight gain in those around you. Being suicidal, talking about death, about wanting to die is another clear indication that that person is depressed. Being restless and irritable and physical symptoms that are usually brought about by poor mental health such as headaches, digestive disorders and various body pains.

But what is postpartum depression really? We've heard about it often enough, yet are we really sure that we know enough about it for us to actually understand this illness in order for us to help ourselves as well as others?

Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields are currently engaging in a word war against each other because of a type of depression, called postpartum depression. Cruise’s and Brooke’s debacle started when Tom Cruise openly disapproved of Brooke Shield’s personal choice of opting to take prescribed medicines to cure her postpartum depression, when he guested at the Today Show. According to Cruise, who is a popular devotee of Scientology (who believes that we can be cured through natural means and that taking medicine is doing our body harm), Brooke Shields should have instead, opted to cure her postpartum depression by doing healthy exercises. Adding that a lot of people have been misinformed about depression and how to actually cure this common illness.

But what is postpartum depression really? We’ve heard about it often enough, yet are we really sure that we know enough about it for us to actually understand this illness in order for us to help ourselves as well as others? Being pregnant should really be a source of joy for everyone, especially the mother to be, who for nine months, will actually have living being grow from inside of her. Unfortunately, there is another side to this joyous occasion, being pregnant means that you and your body will have to get used to some adjustments for you to have a safe pregnancy. Smoking, alcohol, strenuous activities as well as stress should be avoided at all cost. A healthy baby means having a healthy mother as well. But given that you have been able to successfully avoided all these bad habits for your baby to be, childbirth is a whole different thing, as much as we may try to avoid it, there are still some unfortunate cases wherein the mother’s as well as the baby’s life might be in danger.

But there’s actually more, postpartum depression actually happens after childbirth. Although it’s quite common and a lot of women have learned to how to deal with it as well as successfully treat it (like Brooke Shields), it is still quite avoidable. Postpartum depression is actually a lot like depression, but only new moms are the possible victims of this illness. There are actually a lot possible reasons why postpartum depression occurs:

Childbirth as we all know is not as easy as pie, actual physical stress from giving birth is one of the main reasons why postpartum depression occurs. Next postpartum depression trigger is massive changes is hormonal levels. A lot of moms-to-be who were hesitant about bearing a child are also more susceptible to postpartum depression, those who are not ready to be a mother yet are more easily to get depressed as opposed to happy and excited moms-to-be.

When postpartum depression happens, it really is best to go to the doctor immediately. Aside from obviously having ill-effects for the new mother, postpartum depression can prove to be harmful to the child as well. New mothers who are suffering from postpartum depression may be harboring ill feelings toward their children. Their are actually some cases of murder wherein postpartum depression has been cited as the reason. Mothers who suffer from postpartum depression may blame their child for their weight gain, thus feeling like they’ve become less attractive and unloved. It is really best to consult a reputable cognitive behavior therapist to take care of your postpartum woes, your therapist may prescribe medications to help cure postpartum depression as well as therapy sessions to help relieve whatever pent emotions that you may have.

Manic depression or Bipolar depression is actually considered as one of the worst type of depression that people usually suffer from.

Manic depression or Bipolar depression is actually considered as one of the worst type of depression that people usually suffer from.

Characterized by sudden and extreme changes in their mood, Manic depression is said to be called as such because manic = mania refers to the ‘ups’ while depression refers to the ‘downs’.
A lot of people actually experience erratic changes in their moods, some times, these so-called mood swings may not just be caused by PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or stress. Doctors actually have diagnosed mood swings as a common symptom of depression.

But when these so-called mood swings have gone to utmost absurdity, from getting irked even by the littlest or simplest of thins like not getting your favorite ice cream flavor, this may not be just a sign of brattiness, but when getting irked means you’ll cuss and swear on the ice cream vendor and throw absurd tantrums, this may already be the start of Manic depression. The so-called ‘manic’ or ‘ups’ in Manic depression is described as to be the times when a person suffering from Manic depression may experience overly high periods, consisting of heightened energy, a sudden outburst of euphoric mood, extreme irritability, thoughts racing as well as aggressive behavior.
According to therapists, someone suffering from Manic depression may have these so-called manic ‘periods’ wherein sudden outbursts of euphoric and elevated mood swings may actually go through this for as long as not just a day, in can actually go on for as long as one week, even longer than that.

When it comes to the so-called ‘low’ or ‘down’ periods, as its name suggests can actually bring someone who is suffering from Manic depression may experience very similar symptoms to those who are suffering from actual depression. People who are suffering from Manic depression may actually experience episodes showing a depressed state of mind – a feeling of worthlessness and being unloved may start to corrupt the individual’s mind. Various symptoms, showing guilt, extreme sadness, anxiety attacks, feeling of not belonging, extreme pessimism and obvious loss for pleasure. According to therapists, an individual who is depressed. consistently for more than a week can officially be diagnosed as someone who is suffering from Manic depression.

In spite of being one of the most common, yet severe type of depressive disorder, Manic depression, according to doctors can actually be treated. There’s no reason to worry too much about it, just follow the proper procedures that the therapist will instruct you to do, take the proper prescribed medications as well as the proper dosage in order to help you (or your friend or love one) overcome Manic depression before it becomes too late. Also, individuals who are suffering from Manic depression should always be able to see their therapists on a regular basis so as to be able to release their pent up emotions to some one who can interpret and understand what they’re going to a lot better as compared to “normal” people.

Although positive results for a Manic depressive patient can still be achieved from natural alternatives, a proper and a more lasting relief from Manic depressive symptoms can still be best acquired through seeing cognitive behavior therapists. Contrary to some beliefs, when it comes to psychiatric treatments, psychiatrists, preferably cognitive behavior therapists are still the best ones to consult for Manic depression, as well as the ones who’ll most probably be able to cure Manic depression.

Depression or prolonged sadness is actually quite common in the United States, around 9.5 percent of the American population actually suffers from this illness, however, not all of them get to be treated, thus, depression and its ill-effects continue to be a burden to some individuals.
