DePauw Finishes Season with SCAC Tie against Centre

November 7, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw wrapped up the women's soccer season with a 1-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tie against visiting Centre and finished the season with a 7-7-5 overall record and a 4-2-3 SCAC mark. The Colonels are 12-4-4 overall and 5-2-2 in conference play.

The Tigers scored an own goal at 29:01 before Centre forced the overtime on Amy Hebbeler's goal with just 3:19 left in regulation.

DePauw held a 10-4 edge in shots, while Centre led in corners, 5-3. Lauren Palfrey recorded three saves for the Tigers while playing the first half and both overtime periods and Caroline Kerr had one stop in the second half. Kellie Lenz notched four saves for the Colonels.

24th-ranked DePauw Finishes Fourth at SCAC Championship

November 7, 2009, Atlanta, Ga. — The 24th-ranked Tigers dropped both of its matches today and finished fourth at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship at Oglethorpe.

The Tigers lost to 13th-ranked Colorado College by a 3-2 (25-19, 18-25, 26-28, 25-18, 15-10) score in the semifinals before dropping a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) match to 17th-ranked Trinity in the third-place match.

DePauw finished the regular season with a 28-9 record and awaits word of a possible at-large NCAA Championship selection.

DePauw Closes Season with Loss to Centre

November 7, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — In their final game of the season the Tigers suffered not only their first home loss of the season, but they allowed the first goal of the year at Boswell Field in a 1-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer loss to Centre.

DePauw finished the campaign with a 12-5-1 overall record and a 6-4 SCAC mark, while Centre was 14-4-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the conference.

Austin Hall scored the game's lone goal at 76:49 on an assist from James Kusak.

DePauw held a 7-4 edge in shots, while Centre led in corners, 4-2.

Tigers Advance to SCAC Finals with Win over Centre

November 7, 2009, Conway, Ark. — DePauw improved to 12-7 on the season and advanced to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship game following a 2-0 semifinal win over Centre.

The Colonels dropped to 12-5 with the loss. The Tigers face Rhodes in Sunday's 11 a.m. CST title game. Rhodes defeated Sewanee, 2-1, in overtime in the other semifinal contest.

Addie McDonnell scored the Tigers' first goal at 25:51 before Sarah Riffle scored on Kimberly Trainor's assist at 59:21.

DePauw held a 10-6 advantage in shots and 9-4 in penalty corners. Liz Attewell recorded four saves in the shutout, while Patty Cowley had six for Centre.

DePauw Clinches Share of Third SCAC Football Title and Earns First NCAA Appearance in Program History

November 7, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw trailed 17-14 early in the third quarter, but scored on its next three possessions and claimed a 34-23 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over visiting Austin as well as the program's third SCAC title.

The Tigers finished in a tie with Millsaps in the SCAC standings, but earned the conference’s automatic qualification into the Division III Championship by virtue of their win over Millsaps in early October. The appearance will be the Tigers’ first in the football playoffs.

DePauw improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the SCAC with their sixth straight win, while the Kangaroos dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers reached paydirt first on Bryan Mulligan's 5-yard pass from Spud Dick with 13:11 left in the second.

Austin's Ross Hasten scored on a 24-yard pass from Andy Braly and then added a 36-yard run to give the Kangaroos a 14-7 lead with 5:12 remaining in the half.

Alex Koors caught an 8-yard scoring pass from Dick with just 1:09 left in the half to knot the score at 14-14. Austin then opened the second half with a 27-yard field goal off the foot of John Reisig.

DePauw responded with an 8-play, 69-yard drive which culminated in a Derrick Karazsia 1-yard run and gave the Tigers a 21-17 lead with 6:34 remaining in the third. Following a defensive stand, DePauw got the ball back on its own 38 and needed nine plays to cover 62 yards with Jon Ellis scoring from the 1 with 1:27 left in the third and pushing the lead to 28-17.

The Kangaroos answered as Hasten scored his third touchdown of the afternoon with a 7-yard run early in the fourth. The try for two failed and DePauw still held a 28-23 lead.

As they've done all year, the Tigers were able to secure the win with a ball-control drive late in the game. DePauw started on its own 22 and 15 plays later it extended the lead to 34-23 with Ellis' 2-yard run.

The Tigers' defense again stopped Austin and the offense ran out the last 3:41 to clinch the win.

Dick completed 31-of-40 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. The game was the 14th 300-yard game of his career. Koors caught 12 passes for 111 yards, while Mulligan had eight grabs for 75 yards.

In the first quarter Mulligan broke the DePauw career receptions mark of 195 held by Jay True (1977-80). In the third, Koors set the DePauw single-season receiving yardage mark of 991 set by John Stephens in 2001.

Braly threw for 126 yards and rushed for a team-high 83 for the Kangaroos. Hasten added 53 yards as Austin totaled 206 rushing yards. Phillip Gonzales led the way with five catches for 59 yards.

Defensively, Ryan Preuss, Ben Brandstatter and Kyle Sherer each had eight tackles and the Tigers totaled six tackled for loss.

Matt Finke paced Austin with 13 tackles with Nick Zitaglio and Greg Millerick following with 10 each.

DePauw outgained Austin 397-322 and had a 27-19 edge in first downs. The Tigers, ranked third in the nation in time of possession, held a 37:35-22:25 edge for the game.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season at home on Saturday, November 14, with the 116th meeting against Wabash College (8-1) in the Monon Bell game. Kickoff is set for just after 1 p.m. from Blackstock Stadium. The series is tied at 53-53-9, with DePauw holding a 37-34-6 lead in games played for possession of the Monon Bell which entered the series in 1932. Austin hosts Trinity next Saturday.

24th-ranked Tigers Advance to SCAC Semifinals

November 6, 2009, Atlanta, Ga. — The 24th-ranked and third-seeded Tigers advanced to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship semifinals following a 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14) win over sixth-seeded Oglethorpe in the quarterfinals.

Kristen Chynoweth led the Tigers with 14 kills and six blocks, while Madison Hoenig had 23 digs and Ali Smith totaled 55 assists.

DePauw improved to 28-7 with the win and faces Colorado College. Saturday's quarterfinal match is set for 1:30 p.m.

Riffle Invited to Senior All-Star Game

November 5, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw senior forward Sarah Riffle is one of 38 student-athletes who has been selected to compete in the 2009 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Senior All-Star game.

The game is scheduled to take place at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 22 at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.

Riffle leads DePauw with 11 goals, 26 total points and three game-winning goals. Her four assists are second on the squad. Riffle also leads the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in points and shares the conference lead in game-winning goals. She's also earned SCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors three times this season.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season this weekend when they compete in the SCAC Championship at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. DePauw (11-7, 5-3) is seeded third and opens play on Saturday, November 7, against second-seeded Centre in a 1:30 p.m. CST semifinal game.

Tigers Ranked 12th in Latest Women's Cross Country Rankings

November 5, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — After capturing its seventh straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title, the DePauw women's cross country team dropped two spots to 12th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Rankings.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, November 14, when they compete in the Great Lakes Regional at the Lavern Gibson Course just east of Terre Haute. DePauw serves as co-host with Rose-Hulman. For further information, please visit the official site.

DePauw Maintains National Volleyball Ranking

November 4, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Following a weekend split, the 27-7 Tigers remained ranked 24th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.

DePauw totaled 79 points in the rankings, while Wisconsin-Oshkosh leads with 594 points and 22 of the 24 first-place votes. Juniata is second with 574 points followed by Washington-St. Louis with 557 points and one first-place vote.

The Tigers are one of four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schools ranked in the top 25 as Southwestern is 12th, Colorado College is 13th and Trinity is 17th.

DePauw competes in the SCAC Championship this weekend at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. The Tigers are seeded third and open play on Friday in a 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal match. For more information on the Championship, please visit the official site.

SCAC Title Share on the Line Saturday at Blackstock

November 4, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — The DePauw football team puts its five-game win streak on the line and can clinch a share of its third Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title when it hosts Austin College on Saturday, November 7. Kickoff from Blackstock Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

DePauw is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC after winning at Birmingham-Southern by a 35-21 score. The Tigers have won five straight after a 34-24 home loss to Centre on September 19.

With a win, DePauw would earn a share of its third SCAC title. A Tigers win combined with a Centre loss at Trinity on Saturday would give DePauw the conference’s automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championship.

Austin is 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play after a 31-21 win at Rhodes on October 24. All three of the Kangaroos’ losses have come by seven or fewer points.
