This lecture reassesses a prominent theory in Homeric studies regarding how written texts of the Iliad and the Odyssey emerged. The chief problem with the way Homerists imagine a literate Homer is that they insist on an outmoded valorization of literacy. Those who contend that Homer’s productions did not require literacy have not succeeded in convincing their opponents, who simply deny the capabilities of oral poets to produce something like the Homeric epics. This lecture moves the debate forward by offering a more productive way to think about the question of Homer’s literacy and the relationship between oral and literate practices.

In Homeric scholarship, the concept of homecoming (nostos) is often used to compare Achilles, the central hero of the Iliad, with Odysseus, the central hero of the Odyssey. While Achilles sacrifices nostos for glory (kleos), Odysseus succeeds in achieving both simultaneously.

This lecture argues that the theme of nostos also applies to Hector, the leader of the Trojans. Both Homeric poems, particularly the final books of the Iliad, underscore Hector's failed return home. This failed nostos represents the personal sacrifice Hector makes in his pursuit of kleos, thereby emphasizing the tragic cost of Iliadic glory and demonstrating Odysseus’ superiority over his heroic peers from the Iliad.
