I think Nikon must release an upgrade to both the D700 and the D90 to compete with Canon 5D MarkII and 7D.

They need to improve their lens selection as well.
The current 24-120mm VR is considered by some to be one of Nikon's worst lenses. I have a D300, D700 and use several lenses including the 24-70mm 2.8 which is the best zoom I've ever used.

I also use a 16-85mm on the D300 and that also is a great lens. Nikon needs to make a similiar quality lens like the 16-85mm but for a FX sensor.

These things need to be done quickly.

If Nikon really wants to compete like a new Nikon exec says they need to, then don't put out products that need any explanation. Roll out (1) D7000 16MP with 1080 video and same tilt/swivel LCD as D5000 for $1500, (2) D700x with D3x chip and 1080 video for the same price as a 5DII, and (3) Coolpix L2## with 14MP and 1080 video for $300. This covers the market ...and no one will question why...they'll only want one.

Just back from NAB in Vegas, and if Nikon doesn't come out with 24p 1920 x 1080 quickly , Canon will win the battle of most units sold for good. The 5d 7d and D1 were all the rage at the show.
Most still pros have segwayed over to shooting video and its not with a Nikon product.

D300s adds video to the D300 already...

If the D90 is "tweaked" (improvements but with the same basic 12mp sensor), then I'd expect an update to be called the D90s. If it is a new camera/new sensor, then D100 is already taken, so I'd expect them to go to the Dn000 naming convention for it, so given the higher end model series usually start with a '7' (think D70->D80->D90, and D700->???), then D7000 seems the logical name. It would be a new body/new camera, likely bigger than the D5000 but smaller than the D300.

I would love to have something that combines D300 ease of use and quality with some video capability. I was very disappointed by the D3000/5000 offering, which seemed to be a step back in terms of photographic controls. I guess this is what you mean by the D7000 suggestion, or were you just referring to a sensor upgrade using the existing Dn000 body?

Nikon cannot wait much longer to make the D700 replacement with video available as the veteran DSLR buyers may just go to a high end video camera or Canon 5d MKII as I almost have done. Nikon stands to lose one of the most important customer bases it has which I suspect drive a lot of amateur DSLR sales Nikon's way but Nikon seems oblivious to that reality.

My thoughts are that there will be, or should be an 18MP, full frame D800...in keeping with the IQ at higher ISO's.

That will trump the 7D and a still be a force to be reckoned with...able to resolve 2500 plus lines...now the standard.

It's more likely that they would place the D800 here and thus allowing the 24MP top of the line to retain their flagship status...and sales.

The only flaw in the above strategy is that Canon already has a D700 similarly priced 20+mp camera at the D700 price point, the 5DMKII.

And in the past...Nikon chose to compete the D700 against Canon's venerable 5D...and regardless of what I think...it may be their strategy again...in which case...we will have a D800 with a 20MP sensor to compete against the Canon 5d MKII.

I just wish Nikon would hurry up...
