HPV Poised to Become a Leading Cause of Oral Cancer in Men

The sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer in women is poised to become one of the leading causes of oral cancer in men, according to a new study. The HPV16 virus now causes as many cancers of the upper throat as tobacco and alcohol, probably due both to an increase in oral sex and the decline in smoking, (the historically dominant risk factor) researchers say.

The only available vaccine against HPV, made by Merck & Co. Inc., is currently given only to girls and young women. But Merck plans this year to ask government permission to offer the shot to boys. Experts say a primary reason for male vaccinations would be to prevent men from spreading the virus and help reduce the nearly 12,000 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in U.S. women each year. I might add that by not doing gender based vaccination, we will reduce the overall reservoir of the virus in the US which is currently ubiquitous in the population. But the new study should add to the argument that there may be a direct benefit for men, too. The study was published February 1, 2008, in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

“We need to start having a discussion about those cancers other than cervical cancer that may be affected in a positive way by the vaccine,” said study co-author Dr. Maura Gillison of Johns Hopkins University. Of course she is referring the the rapidly rising numbers or oropharyngeal, base of tongue, and tonsillar cancers we are seeing in both males and females.

Daniel passed away recently. Early thirties, marathon runner, singer, no risk factors. Daniel went from healthy to death in 5 months…his disease detected late, now his life ended early!

Several weeks ago, I introduced you to Daniel. One of my coworkers in Nashville became acquainted with Daniel’s story through a mutual acquaintance at one of her dentist’s office there in Nashville.

I continue to read his blog to follow his daily (or almost daily) journaling. His blog entry is sometimes humorous, sometimes tear-jerking, but ALWAYS faith-filled. Today, he says it took him several hours to type as he described his first round of chemo and radiation therapy and the overall battle (like Jacob wrestling all night with the angel, it seems) that he is fighting with every ounce of courage, faith, medical and emotional therapy he can. Dr. Stacy Johnson Leads A Medical Team To Equador

Dr Johnson along with his wife, Jeanine, his son, Jon Ross, and 15 other people representing Grace Assembly of God in Whiteland, Indiana, Ministered alongside missionaries, Paula and Lana Duda June 5^th through the 13^th, at the Church Aposento Alto, in Quito, Ecuador. The team consisting of a Physician, two Dentists, an Optometrist, and several nurses and support staff saw 860 patients, with 164 of those patients accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior.

Twelve years ago Dr Johnson visited this same church, with a similar medical team. At that time the team purchased the adjacent property for $2200. Since that time construction teams have built an adjoining school which currently houses 110 sponsored students, and a weekly feeding program for over 300 indigent children in the neighborhood.

Frazzled and burnt out –

that’s what we become when we don’t set aside enough “me time” to relax and reenergize.

Even the busiest people can free up a little daily me time.

It’s just a matter of taking charge and getting creative.

Here are some tips to get you started on your path to your much-needed break from the madness of everyday life.

Turn wait time into me time You’ve got “me time” waiting to be claimed when
you’re picking up your children from soccer practice

or sitting in the doctor’s office.

Always have a good book, knitting project or some other activity to enjoy while

you wait.

Even your commute is me time in the making – listen to your favorite music or learn to speak a foreign language with audio lessons.

Learn to say no

Saying no is the top suggestion you’ll hear when you’re looking for ways to find more time for yourself.

Your time is precious, so don’t spend a minute of it doing something you don’t enjoy if you can
help it.

You also don’t want to overload yourself.

If someone asks you to take on a task you can’t or don’t want to do, just explain that you’re too busy to give the job the time and attention it deserves.

Declare your official “me” time

Sometimes the best way to want is to just reach out and around you know that X day hour to hour is your me time be interrupted unless there’s – and no, running out of Cocoa emergency.

I am an avid outdoors man, born and raised on a hog-farm two hours Northeast of the Indianapolis

area.

I am happily married to my incredible wife of 25 years, Jeanine.

We have four wonderful children,

and one granddaughter .

I opened my family-oriented dental practice in October of 1991, after graduating

from the Indiana University Schoolof Dentistry. I am a member, in good standing, with the

American Dental Association, the American Orthodontic Society, the Academy

of General Dentistry, the Indiana Dental Association, and the Indianapolis District

Dental Society.
