Joel and Chelsie's Photo Booth

Joel and Chelsie's wedding was on Halloween, and they encouraged guests to dress up in costumes.

I set up a photo booth at their wedding, and it was a big success with the guests. I think I've worked out all the kinks in setting it up and running smoothly. All that's left to do is make the booth look pretty on the outside.

The Corcoran College of Art + Design annual Halloween party was last week. This was my first year shooting the event, and it didn't disappoint. There was a strong turnout of students and a lot of quality costumes.

A few weekends ago I went with students from The Corcoran on the yearly apple picking trip. Like any college, The Corcoran is always looking for images of happy students participating in school activities, and the trip was a great opportunity for that.

Wedding at the Peabody Library

Last weekend I shot Ben and Christine's wedding at the Peabody Library in Baltimore. The lighting in the library was fairly dim, so I ended up setting up a few small strobes to light the alter. I kept the power low on the lights so that they wouldn't be distracting to the participants, and would balance easily with the ambient light. The effects of the flash can be seen in the second picture.

Revolutionary War Cannon

For years I've had an idea for a shot I wanted of a revolutionary war cannon. But it wasn't untill recently that I've had the necessary equipment to make it happen. My idea was to take the shot from the front, and just to the side of the gun. The men who fire the gun all wear ear plugs, and are standing behind the muzzle of the gun, but I wanted the camera to be in front of the gun. Therefore the only reasonable way to do it was to set up a remote.
I set up a body with a 12-24 lens at about five feet to the left and two feet in front of the end of the gun. I racked the lens out to 12mm and fired the camera remotely via pocket-wizard. It's hard to determine the exact second a cannon will fire on any given shot. The man firing the gun is lighting a small bit of black powder that travels down the touch hole and ignites a larger charge in the breach of the barrel. Luckily it only took two firings of the cannon to get the timing just right to get the flame coming out the touch hole and front of the gun.

Wedding Photo Booth

At a recent wedding I shot, the bride asked me if i would be able to set up a simple photo booth in addition to my regular wedding coverage. Never having set up a photo booth before, my inner photo geek came out as I tried to figure out a way to set it up.

Because it was my first time attempting this, I kept the whole thing fairly basic. I set up the rig in a gazebo not far from the tent where the reception would be. The gazebo gave people a confined place to stand for the booth, and had an outlet to power the laptop. The camera was triggered by a remote cord (visible in the upper left photo), and the photos would then display on the connected laptop. I uploaded them to a web gallery later that night.

There was a steady stream of people taking pictures throughout the evening, and judging by the number of pictures taken, I think it was a hit. I'm currently looking for ways to improve the setup so I can provide prints instantly and give the booth a more finished feel to it.

Martin - Day Wedding 4x5

I shot the wedding of Marisa Day and Jon Martin a few weeks ago. They were married on Marisa's family farm in rural Virginia. I arrived at the farm about an hour earlier than I needed to so that I could unload my equipment and scout the area. The ceremony was held just outside the house and the reception was in a huge tent set up in the field adjacent to their garden. We found three to four locations that would be suitable for the image of the entire bridal party (ten bridesmaids and six groomsmen), and a few that would work best for just the smaller groups.

My favorite location by far was an old tractor and barn in a field near to the farmhouse. The tractor was old, and rusty, but is still in use by Marisa's family. Marisa and Jon were happy to take the walk with me to get the pictures. I've been trying to get a few large format images at each wedding I've shot recently. When we got to the tractor I shot everything I needed with my SLR and then broke out the 4x5 to make a few extra frames.

Washington DC Landscapes

Last week I was tasked with getting some last minute shots of DC to put in the the new glimpsbook for The Corcoran College of Art + Design.

The designers and the communications staff at The Corcoran had a list of areas in DC they were interested in, and a few specific shots they wanted, but not much direction otherwise. I normally don't shoot these kinds of pictures, so it was a fun challenge to spend a few nights working on them.

While I was in New Jersey a few weeks back, I shot some portraits of three of my cousins. They're 7 year old triplets. I've photographed the boys numerous times in the past, but this is my first formal portraits of them. The most challenging part was getting them sit still between the time I focused the image and loaded the film.

I'll be posting the portraits of the other two boys over the course of the week.

July 4th Fireworks in DC

I set up a video camera on a friends roof to do a time lapse recording of the fireworks on the National Mall for Independence Day. I ran into a few snags along the way, but overall it was a great learning experience.

Assateague Horses 4x5

I spent a few nights camping on Assateague Island a few weekends ago. The weather was either overcast or raining for most of the weekend, so I didn't bring the camera out too much. I did take the 4x5 out to get a few pictures of the wild ponies that wander freely around the island.

Lately I've been bringing my 4x5 along with me whenever possible to shoots. My main reason for bringing it, has been my desire to stretch myself as a photographer. The camera forces me to slow down and be more deliberate with my photography. I'm limited to about 16 shots when I'm using the camera, so I've been attempting to find the best possible angle and composition for each frame.

This past weekend I photographed a wedding at the Comus Inn near Sugarloaf Mountain. The ceremony was outdoors, and luckily the weather held. The ground was still a bit muddy from the previous day's rain. The view of Sugarloaf Mountain from the inn was great, and other than having to shoot into the sun for the entire ceremony, made for a great backdrop.

Last weekend I took some engagement portraits for a couple I know in Washington. They're both graphic designers who I've worked for in the past. It was fun working on something unrelated to normal work with them. They wanted their pictures to have the "DC" look without being specific to any monument or building.
