Join Jodie Limon Montoya, Education Coordinator from the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, as she talks about Horseshoe Crabs. They are spawning in our sands! These ancient creatures have been around for 400 million years, adapting to and withstanding every conceivable change time has presented. They have a critical role in the lives of the Red Knot, a migratory shorebird, and are important to biomedical research and the pharmaceutical industry. Cape Cod is home to a population of Horseshoe Crabs in severe decline and unsustainably harvested for bait. Learn about what Mass Audubon and other conservation groups are doing to protect this amazing marine creature here on Cape Cod.

Join Mass Audubon naturalist Jodie Montoya for a colorful virtual tour of Cape Cod's Butterfly fauna and be inspired by the love of the Lepidoptera! We will see many of Cape Cod's 76 species, such as the Monarch, Painted Lady, and Red Admiral. Gardening for butterflies is easy, beneficial to the environment, and helps support a healthy, thriving butterfly population on Cape Cod. We will identify the best native nectaring and host plants for your garden and highlight the most productive butterfly habitats on Cape Cod.

April's Meeting Room Artist - Jim Sands

After being discharged from the Air Force, Jim briefly gave commercial art a try, but decided the time wasn't right. He pursued his other love, broadcasting, which brought him to WNBC, New York & WHDH, Boston, and others. Upon retiring, he moved to Dennisport, and was inspired to pick up a paintbrush again.

His paintings cover a wide range: the exhibit includes dogs, flowers, portraits and lighthouses. Come see his work in our meeting room!

Wizard's Workshop

Do you have some aspiring magicians home for school vacation? Hosted by Wizard Throckmorton (aka Greg McAdams), the Workshop is for ages 7 to 12. The wizards-in-training will be learning how to perform real magic tricks from a fully-costumed wizard. All of the magic tricks they learn can be easily mastered, and they will receive all of the props needed to perform these magical effects. In addition, each student will receive his or her very own magic wand! Please call the library to register, as Throckmorton can only accept 30 young wizards for this year's class.

Get ready to sing and clap to Jay Mankita's guitar! Jay will treat our audience to interactive songs. He is a masterful guitar player who also accompanies himself with a foot-driven, floor based percussion rig, built from found objects, broken down music gear, and recycled materials. The Massachusetts-based songwriter is a Parents' Choice Award winner for his album "Eat Like A Rainbow." The title song from that CD appears on the Putumayo label's Picnic Playground collection and has been heard in over 100 countries around the world. His "Junk Food Man" is on the Grammy-nominated album, "Healthy Food For Thought." Dozens of artists have performed and recorded his songs, and he himself has performed in over 1500 schools and libraries over 30 years. Bring your sweet tooth! Members of the Cape Cod Genealogy Society will be selling delicious baked goods. Proceeds will benefit the Society and help pay for the very popular Ancestry.com database, which is available at Dennis Public Library and helps patrons research their family histories.

The Cape Cod Genealogical Society’s “Genealogy Room” is located at Dennis Public Library. The collection includes genealogy-related books, magazines, CDs, and unpublished materials. CCGS volunteers are on hand to assist Society members and the public. The Genealogy Room’s hours of operation are Tuesdays 12 – 4, Thursdays 10 – 4, and Saturdays 10 – 12.

Are you a Cape dweller who has fallen in love with the sea? Come celebrate! Rescheduled after last month's snowstorm, Denya LeVine and Julie Charland will perform 18th to 20th century folk songs and sea shanties, (work songs used on square-rigged ships in the Age of Sail; the rhymes coordinated the efforts of many sailors hauling lines.) Playing the guitar, fiddle, and ukulele, the ladies will treat our audience to toe-tapping and energetic songs like "Cape Cod Shanty," "Drunken Sailor," "Mary Ann," "By the Sea," "Crawdad," "Down by the Bay," "Swimming Song," and "Sloop John B." The show is free, but the performers will welcome any donations.

Get ready for St. Patrick’s Day with Irish harpist Mairead Doherty. The talented musician will treat listeners to Celtic airs that evoke the haunting romance of the Emerald Isle.

For this year’s performance her special guests are William Miner of Brewster, who plays flute, and Sally McKnight of Weston, MA, who plays the hammer dulcimer. A singer will also join the trio on that day. The group’s stirring renditions of traditional music and the delightful background stories relayed by Ms. Doherty are sure to entertain an audience of all ages.

The documentary asks why these heroic men and women fought so valiantly for freedoms they themselves did not enjoy.

Do you remember Billy Best? In 1994 at the age of 16, Billy Best captured the nation's heart when he left home in Norwell, Massachusetts, running away to escape chemotherapy. Suddenly his young photo appeared on the front pages from coast to coast as his parents and the police mounted a nationwide search for him.

His story became everyone's passion as the television networks snapped up the story for Dateline, 20/20, A Current Affair, and more. Thanks to an outpouring of support from the public, Billy began a journey of discovery to find an alternative treatment for his cancer. Eighteen years later and still cancer free, Billy Best has teamed up with Linda Conti of Sandcastle Memoirs in South Yarmouth to share his remarkable, triumphant story. Come meet Billy and Linda. Ginny Wilson lives in Brewster, and has focused on watercolors since the 1990's. Her focus is on the use of color, and she is particularly inspired by water. She has exhibited at many galleries on the South Shore, and is a gallery artist at the Cape Cod Art Association.
