Her most recent novel The Writing Circle received praise from authors like Anita Shreve, who called it "an amazingly clever novel with depth, drama, and warmth." Not only has the prolific author written a novel, but also she has published plays, short stories, children's books, and a memoir - all while teaching as a professor of English at Mount Holyoke College. Paul Harding arrives to delight our audience. The former rock drummer's debut novel Tinkers won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Tinkers patiently traces the meandering memory of a dying clockmaker. Harding moves through time with Proustian grace. No detail is too small for him to stop the narrative clock and stare. Meticulous description does not propel a plot (as anyone who reads Virginia Woolf well understands), but the heart of Harding's book lies in this consistently lovely deluge of detail. His dogged specificity never flags, and in the end it is this passionate attention to detail that makes "Tinkers" a riveting and perhaps enduring read.

Spring is here! What better time to sharpen your driving skills for road trips in the nice weather? If you are age 50 or older, come and participate in this classroom course. You’ll learn about accident prevention, new car innovations, new rules of the road, and how to respond to road rage. No tests! A certificate given at the end of the course may help you get a discount on your auto insurance. Space is limited, so register ASAP! There is a small materials fee, which must be paid at time of registration to secure a spot. The cost for attending is $14 for non-AARP members and $12 for AARP members, (AARP members: please bring your AARP membership cards with you when paying.) Cash or checks made out to AARP accepted. Ian Ives, Director of Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, gives our audience an inside look into the life of ospreys. These birds of prey, also known as fish hawks, are living upon their platforms along Cape Cod marshes and waterways. Through a colorful slide presentation, discover the osprey’s amazing abilities and life history, how the species has recovered from the DDT (insecticide) years, and how Mass Audubon is monitoring their nests in hopes of attracting more ospreys to the region.

Get into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day! Mairead Doherty will treat listeners to Celtic airs that evoke the haunting romance of the Emerald Isle.

For this year’s performance her special guests are Bill Miner, who plays flute, and Sarah Ford Marchio, who plays the Scottish small pipes. The trio’s stirring renditions of traditional music and the delightful background stories relayed by Ms. Doherty are sure to entertain an audience of all ages.

Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, Mairead Doherty studied harp under the auspices of the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. She has performed throughout Europe and North America. This year marks Ms. Doherty’s fourth year performing at Dennis Public Library.

Bring your sweet tooth! Proceeds will benefit the Society and help pay for the very popular Ancestry.com database, which is available at Dennis Public Library and helps patrons conduct research on family histories.

The Cape Cod Genealogical Society’s “Genealogy Room” is located at Dennis Public Library. The collection includes genealogy-related books, magazines, CDs, and unpublished materials. CCGS volunteers are on hand to assist Society members and the public. The Genealogy Room’s hours of operation are Tuesdays 12 – 4, Thursdays 10 – 4, and Saturdays 10 – 12.

New author and Mashpee resident Chip Bishop meets with our audience. His book The Lion and the Journalist: The Unlikely Friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and Joseph Bucklin Bishop explores the relationship between Theodore Roosevelt and Chip’s great granduncle Joseph Bucklin Bishop, who was a newspaper editor and the president’s authorized biographer. Chip says his goal “was to draw a rich portrait of the exceptional lives of two great men…The book emerges as a remarkable tale of power, politics and presidential courage.”

Pulitzer Prize winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin writes, “Chip Bishop identifies one of the central keys to T.R.’s success, his unparalleled ability to forge warm relationships with the press, even then they challenged and criticized him.”
