Research uptake is the process by which development research is packaged, disseminated, communicated and promoted to a varied audience of developing and developed country policymakers, decision-makers and intermediaries such as the media and civil society actors. The aim is to get policymakers to not only to know about your research, but to feel well disposed towards it, and ultimately to use it. Boxes of research findings under the counter are going to rot if they are not displayed, labelled, pimped and prodded until they are attractive to the passerby. Be creative and know your audience - one size does not fit all and the formats you package research into have to be right for different audiences. Few people want a big old sack of findings, but give us a nice pellet of one-page key points and we might be interested, an eye-catching pyramid of working papers might also work, even an online video or poster to really push the boat out.

Think tanks in democratic societies play a vital role in generating policy research, promoting ideas, and fostering discussion between the public and policymakers. However, in young and emerging democracies, think tanks face a number of obstacles that make policy reform difficult. This paper looks at think tanks in Argentina, Ecuador, Georgia, Ghana, Lebanon, Romania, Slovakia, South Korea and Turkey.

The evidence-based policy in development network (ebpdn) is a 2000 member strong online sharing platform for professionals engaged in research, policy and practice around evidence-informed policy. The network was set up in 2005 as part of the DFID funded Civil Society Partnership Programme, in partnership with 19 civil society organisations. This report uses a light touch approach to review the development and functions of the ebpdn. Using key informant interviews and a survey of members, the authors outline the role ebpdn plays for its members and its successes and challenges in building a community, sharing resources and amplifying member's voices. After reviewing the value created by the network, the authors suggest eight options for the ongoing management of the network.

In a fast-moving digital world, the traditional think tank research output is changing. It is no longer adequate for think tanks to rely solely on the impact of a single research publication to inspire and motivate their audience. Tools like as infographics, multimedia presentations, blogs, podcasts and videos are increasingly becoming the norm for think tank research. But with think tanks vying for attention in a crowded and busy online world, is there a danger that the communications tail wags the research dog? Is there value in preserving the traditional think tank publication? Should communications be seen as a means to an end or as an end in itself? And is the nature of research changing because of the rapidly changing communications environment?

The Network of Democracy Research Institutes (NDRI) has just launched its latest report, “Democracy Think Tanks in Action: Translating Research into Policy in Young and Emerging Democracies” with a panel that brought together thinktankers from several countries. The report compiles nine country studies written by think tankers themselves. At the onset of the report, democracy think tanks are described as those that conduct research and analysis on democracy, democratization, and related topics in comparative government and international affairs.

Africans care about jobs, non-Africans care about institutions? The CSAE Blog. March 2013. African scholars are disproportionately interested in labour (i.e., jobs), firms (possibly jobs again), and monetary policy. Non-African scholars are disproportionately interested in political economy, conflict, natural resources, and (an outlier) migration. Roughly speaking, there’s a division between jobs-focused papers by African researchers and papers by non-Africans focused on institutions.

Research can indeed influence policymakers’ views, policy development, funding patterns, and implementation or practice. This is promising for those who would like to improve – and prove – the influence research can have on policy and practice. It is also of importance for better understanding the intended and unintended effects of research. This report presents the NCCR North-South approach to increasing the impact of development-oriented research. It explains how we can maximise our impact and how we can assess whether our efforts have worked, based on six case studies from around the world. The report is of interest to all researchers who wish to respond to policy and practice from their point of view and who are keen on publicising their evidence. It is also relevant to those who teach how to maximise research impact.

GDNet alongside with multiple partners and players in the research to policy field have launched a new initiative; Politics and Ideas: A Think Net. Politics & Ideas: a think net is a Southern-led joint initiative of researchers and practitioners to produce and share innovative knowledge linking ideas and politics in developing and emerging economies.
During the three day conference, participants discussed research which has examined the communication of research to policy makers; the capacity of policy makers to use research; the incentives which drive policy makers to use research and much more. There is a shortage of evidence on policy makers' actual capacity to use research evidence and there is even less evidence on effective strategies to build policy makers' capacity. Furthermore, many presentations highlighted the insidious effect of corruption on use of evidence in policy making processes.
