A friend and colleague is no longer among us. You might know him, because over his short lifetime, he’s helped hundreds of families in Delaware County.

Adam Brown was only 29 but dreamed bigger and accomplished more than most of us ever will. He inspired people around him to be and do their best. He glowed when asked about his family, and his entrepreneurial spirit led our meetings into long discussions on the internet for some of his other ideas. He was appreciative of others, generous and never held back a kind word.

I hoped one day to post an interview with Adam here, on this page. But now, instead, the sting of loss is in the air, for him and for everyone changed by Friday’s accident.

Entrepreneur.com

Having watched his father struggle to care for his own brother, his aging grandmother and himself, Adam Brown was inspired to purchase a Home Helpers franchise. Getting the word out about his nonmedical and personal-care business was the most crucial step to securing his success. He did so by advertising, visiting local businesses and hospitals, and joining networking groups to educate the community about his services. Says Brown, 28, “This is a referral-based business, particularly because you’re working with people’s family members, so there has to be trust.”

With 170 employees, Brown has positioned his franchise as a strong competitor in the Philadelphia area. After two years, he purchased a second territory and has since secured the “right of first refusal” for two other territories, which gives him first dibs before any other buyers. After working from home for two years, Brown has moved his business into an office, has just opened a satellite office and plans to open additional satellites in the future. Although having a physical presence isn’t required, it has paid off: His franchise looks more established, and the neighborhood where the office is located is bringing in even more business. By reaching out to the community and expanding his territory, he has successfully grown his franchise to 350 clients and is projecting year-end sales of approximately $3.5 million.

We interviewed Lorraine Ranalli, a published author who had so much fun writing her book about South Philly Italian recipies (and anecdotes) that she also wrote a vignette for the theater.

Directed by Ron Hill, “Gravy Wars, Agita” is an emotionally charged comedy based on the theme of the book, “Gravy Wars | South Philly Foods, Feuds & Attytudes”. Agita is the Americanized word for Acido, which means aggravation. The parody involves Sal and Cecilia, an Italian-American couple, their two adult children, Gina and Vinnie, and their grandson, Petey. Chaos erupts as the family gathers for their traditional Sunday gravy dinner and discovers that there are too many cooks in this kitchen. Overshadowing the commotion is Cecilia’s chronic hypochondria.

You can see the Colonial Quickies series of short plays at the Colonial Playhouse in Aldan, PA. When a little white building just off Magnolia and Ridley Aves. in Aldan opened it’s doors to the public on September 21, 1940, featuring the brand-new play This Thing Called Love, Colonial Playhouse was born! And now, 68 years later, we’re still here, still going strong. Visit www.ColonialPlayhouse.org

More about “Gravy Wars | South Philly Foods, Feuds & Attytudes”

Is it “gravy” or “sauce”? Lorraine Ranalli, Philadelphia Broadcast vet and writer, settles the age-old argument while humorously describing the culinary competitiveness that runs deep in the heart of South Philadelphia Italians. You’ll laugh out loud as you read the truth about Italian traditions and superstitions. And you’ll discover a slew of scrumptious original recipes that’ll help you win your own kitchen competitions.

“Gravy Wars | South Philly Foods, Feuds & Attytudes” captures the essence of Philadelphia. We have the ability to debate, argue, and dissect the most mundane topics but always we keep our hearts open to our greatest strengths: family and friendships. – Phil Martelli, Head Coach St. Joseph’s University Men’s Basketball and author of Don’t Call Me Coach: A Lesson Plan for Life

Dear Neighbor:

We need your help. The Crozer-Keystone Health System is the largest employer in Delaware County and provides trauma care, burn care, maternity services and care for the uninsured and underinsured.

The proposed 2009-2010 Pennsylvania State Budget contains significant cuts to our hospitals’ Medicaid funding. The proposed budget eliminates all supplemental funding for burn, trauma and maternity care and contains aggregate funding cuts that are $10 million below our current funding level. These cuts affect healthcare services that people cannot go without.

In the past few months, our health system had to eliminate 400 positions. Employees accepted a wage freeze and accepted a suspension, for one year accrual for service to their defined benefit pension plan to address the impact of the economic downturn and changing patient utilization.

More Delaware County residents are losing their jobs and health care insurance. With more people uninsured or covered by Medicaid, the burden to provide care is more difficult.

Restoration of the $10 million in hospital funding cuts to the Crozer0Keystone Health System is essential to maintain hospital services.

We need your help. Please tell Rep. Lentz to restore our funding. Here’s how you can help:
1. Log on to www.crozer.org
2. Click on the box in the center of the page that says, “Tell Your Lawmakers…”
3. Choose “I am a concerned citizen” from the Alert Information page
4. Read the message in Section 1 and fill out your name
5. Fill out all fields in Section 2
6. Review the letter, if desired
7. Click on “Send Message” to send it to your legislator.

We appreciate your taking the time to stop cuts to our hospitals.

Sincerely,

Joan K. Richards
President and Chief Executive Officer
Crozer-Keystone Health System

Dear [name],

I have recently visited my local library and just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all the resources my library offers.

Aside from the volumes of books and periodicals, the CDs, DVDs, audio books and of course, free internet, is so helpful for me and my family.

Plus, with the help of librarians, finding what I need is much faster and the library provides more reliable information than a search on the internet.

Just knowing the library is available helps me appreciate living here in this community even more.

I cannot imagine losing this valuable resource and hope you feel the same way.

Sincerely,

[name] [location]
