Cosmology is the study of the universe and humankind's place in it. When DJDeedle was a young geeky human, one of his heroes was the famed astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist, Carl Sagan. Your humble deejay even had the fortune to meet Sagan, and hear him speak just a year or two before the astronomer's unexpected death in 1996.

This week, the week of Sagan's November 9 birthday, DJDeedle salutes him with a tapestry of sound that, like the cosmos, is fluid, but lumpy, sometimes dark, and sometimes sublimely beautiful. Wednesday, September 30 was International Blasphemy Day, the day to thumb your nose at religion. Clearly something as fun as blasphemy should not be confined to only one day. So, this week DJDeedle touches the third rail of any discourse, religion. Though DJDeedle is most decidedly a skeptic and nonbeliever, utterly and firmly unchurched, he realizes that artists throughout the ages, including musicians, have included religious images and references in their creations.

Modern musicians from Depeche Mode to Johnny Cash and the Doobie Brothers and Kanye West have included references to Jesus in their works, and others like Jesus and Mary Chain and MC 900 Foot Jesus even included everyone's favorite imaginary friend in their band names. If these august artists can take liberties with religion, so can DJDeedle. Exercising your freedom of and from religion can be fun, and above all, entertaining.

The Woodstock Music and Art Fair held on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock forty years ago changed the history of rock and roll. For better or worse, the 32 acts in the Woodstock concerts captured the zeitgeist of the age with the diverse sounds of rock legends like Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Though four decades have passed, and a fickle music industry and fans have diverged from the sound of 1969, the sounds of the 60s still live today as echos in modern rock, and modern rockers owe much to their Woodstock forebears. Like the those at Woodstock, rock music has mutated, transformed, adapted, and survived. This week DJDeedle salutes not Woodstock, but rock music itself, punk, metal, Brit, garage, grunge, indie, and even electronic. The sound of this week's Deedlecast is rock music, but the flavor is definitely DJDeedle. Enjoy this rock block.

Anti-Social Networking

Social networking is among the many things, like identity theft and pop-up advertising, made simpler and easier by modern digital technology. It is not that we didn't meet people or stay in touch with friends and family before the internet connected us all to spam and Youtube. But with all this new connectivity, even staying in touch with people and meeting new people has been streamlined and systematized, and made almost instantaneous and compulsive. The trouble is that with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and all the other networks, being privy at all times to our connections' many thoughts, moods, exclamations, whims, concerns, causes, photos, home videos, humors, disappointments, and the other detritus of the human endeavor can be vexing and overwhelming to say the least.

Sometimes receiving an update a minute about the state of mind of the cousin of the woman who was college roommates with the girlfriend of the guy with whom you formed a punk band briefly in the 80s can put us to the saturation point of digital connectedness. Today's Deedlecast speaks to the facebook frustration phenomenon.

Ian Fleming's James Bond is not the most complex of characters. But the franchise of films has given us some of our most memorable cinematic moments and cultural clichÃs. Time marches on for everyone but James Bond, who never seems to get older (except for that unfortunate return of Sean Connery at 53 in Never Say Never Again). The Bond fighting megalomaniac billionaires and malevolent governments in 2009 hasn't changed much since Dr. No (1962) and From Russia with Love (1963), though the world has changed drastically from those Cold War Ian Fleming days. The whole Bond milieu is a parallax, where the character of James Bond is an almost fixed point with the world moving rapidly around him.

This week, DJDeedle takes some of the iconic Bond themes and sounds as his fixed point and moves the musical world rapidly around them. And because going to the movies just isn't the same without it, if you listen carefully, DJDeedle's even thrown in the popcorn.

News that Vince Shlomi, aka the "Slap Chop guy" or the "Sham Wow guy," was arrested for felony battery when a game of slap and tickle with a Miami prostitute turned violent, prompted DJDeedle to take some liberties with Slap Chop guy's infomercial. Actually, DJDeedle took liberties with a youtube spoof, Slap Rap Featuring Vince (Slapchop Remix), that takes its own liberties with that famous infomercial to hilarious effect. This show also features a musical take on Christian Bale getting slap happy himself and throwing a superstar sized tantrum. DJDeedle strenuously opposes and abjures violence of any kind, particularly by infomercial and film stars with inflated egos. So, this week, let's all get a little slap happy at their expense.

Fatal Wedding Crash (Single)

On Monday, because everyone likes a Monday off, we honor the births of these two American presidents who saved the nation from threats to its very existence. Today, though, DJDeedle honors our new president, Barack Obama, who singlehandedly changed to tempo of the nation at this critical time. For the next four years, maybe eight, we dance to the beat of DJ Obama.

This Deedlecast, "Metropolis," is inspired by the recent news that key scenes from the controversial and somewhat inscrutable 1927 silent film,"Metropolis," have been rediscovered in Argentina. Upon its initial release, according to Zeitmagazin, "the film flopped with critics and audiences alike. Representatives of the American firm Paramount considerably shortened and re-edited the film. They oversimplified the plot, even cutting key scenes. The original version could only be seen in Berlin until May 1927 â from then on it was considered to have been lost forever."

Cutting key scenes and re-editing the film had the effect of making its true meaning opaque and the film nearly incomprehensible; but it created a haunting and mysterious work of cinematic art. With these new scenes, the mystery of the true meaning of the film "Metropolis" and the controversy that has surrounded the timeless film since 1927 may finally have been laid to rest. With the passing of this mystery, DJDeedle feels that the world loses something intangible, yet valuable, and creates a "Metropolis" soundscape filled with inscrutable and controversial electronic aural inputs he hopes are worthy of the look, feel, and mystery of this enduring cinematic masterpiece.

Telephony

Most US telephone customers are familiar with Jane Barbe (pronounced "Barbie") (July 29, 1928âJuly 18, 2003). Even though few of us ever met her, we have all heard her voice many times and know her as the "Telephone Lady" or the "Time Lady." Jane Barbe was an American voice actress who did the later voice recordings for the Bell System. Her voice is heard by millions of people every day speaking for the telephone networks (changed numbers, disconnects, circuits busy, etc.), Bell Laboratory computers, The National Bureau of Standards, announcing ETC's AudichronÂ (formerly Audichron Company) time, temperature, and weather services, and on many voice mail systems nation wide. Her predecessor was Mary Moore, who was known for using a distinctive pronunciation of 9 (Ny-un) and 5 (Fy-uv). The distintive pronunciation was required because, on a poor quality line, "nine" and "five" can sound very similar.

DJDeedle dedicates this Deedlecast to these telephonic legends.

Now that the country at long last has begun to come to it senses, two sensible and fair-minded states in the union have decided, at least for the time being, that marriage should not be restricted solely to people like Britney Spears and strangers who met the day before on a reality television show. You know, heterosexuals. This sudden unexpected moment of openmindedness, although limited to two states and the always sensible Canada, has given gays and lesbians the urge to make solemn what long before had to remain secret, and more recently, less secret, but unsolemnized and unrecognized by the civil authorities.

Two couples who are dear friends of your humble DJ have chosen to do just that: make it solemn, and make it legal (void where prohibited, some restrictions apply, see store for details). Supremely Special, Supremely Ross

Today's musical landscape would be much different if not for the Supremes, and particularly, Diana Ross. The Supremes were the most popular "girl group" of the 1960's, and the most successful vocal group of the period after the Beatles. The Supremes released hit after hit, charting a dozen number one hits between 1964 and 1969. Ultimately, in 1969, the original group split up, with Diana Ross going more or less solo, touring as Diana Ross & the Supremes, though without Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson.

The influence of the Supremes was vital in shaping the Motown sound and R&B. Similarly, the influence of Diana Ross and her solo work on R&B and Disco cannot be understated. The sounds they pioneered can be found throughout today's music, and modern musicians, both female and male, owe them a debt of gratitude for their groundbreaking work. This week, DJDeedle salutes the queens of popular music, both as a group and in their solo careers, the supremely special Supremes.

iPhone Envy

Just a year ago, on June 29, 2007, Apple shocked the world with the introduction of the ultimate hand-held gadget to date -- the Iphone. And next week, Apple will release it's second edition of their ultimate do-dad.

The Iphone is a unique phenomenon in the culture: simultaneously pretentious and geeky. Its sleek tactile functionality has made it almost a fetish for owners, and powerfully envy inducing for the rest of us. Though DJDeedle and the Long-Suffering-One have been helpless to resist the multitude of other Apple products, both computers and ipods, we have thus far resisted the Iphone Borg implants. We've managed this for two reasons: (1) the Iphone is locked to AT&T wireless service; and (2) we like our ipods, and we like our cell phones, but we do not want them to be the same device. The last thing DJDeedle needs is phonecalls interrupting his musical bliss.

Phonautograph

A recording made by Thomas Edison in 1877 has long been thought to be the first artificially recorded sound. It turns out, the first recordings were made in 1860 by Frenchman, Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, using a Phonautograph. The recording medium was merely paper covered in soot, so the sound literally emerges from smoke. As a result of advances in audio technology, these phonautograph recordings can now be heard again using lasers which do not damage or degrade these precious artifacts.

This Deedlecast starts with the very first sound ever recorded using the phonautograph (albeit altered quite a bit by dj magic). There are some other similarly altered phonautographic bits and pieces sprinkled throughout the show.

Here's a little rearrangement/reinterpretation of TÃlÃpopmusik's "Breathe." The radio/album edit was used in a 2002 commercial for the Mitsubishi Outlander. I'm not sure if anyone bought the car because of the wonderful song, but I'm sure TÃlÃpopmusik sold a lot of albums because of the commercial.

This rearrangements contains extesive elements of another of TÃlÃpopmusik's songs from their Genetic World album, "Love Can Damage Your Health," a Deedle favorite some of you may remember from the February 16, 2007 episode of Deedlecast, Ambience Chasers.

With the country gripped in the throes of the presidential primaries, DJDeedle decided that if we can't inject a little truth into the discourse, we can at least have a policy of truthiness. DJDeedle has been a fan of our boys the Depeche Mode for decades, and has been meaning to do a Deedlecast dedicated entirely to D-Mode.

One interesting anecdote about this Deedlecast is that it features an original DJDeedle mashup of a song by Kofi B, a popular highlife musician from Ghana. DJDeedle had the good fortune to hear Kofi B on a friendly New York cab driver's cd player. Your dj, ever searching for the best music for Deedlecast, learned everything he could about Kofi B and his music in the time it took to get from Penn Station uptown to Columbia University. Because music is a universal language, this friendly cab driver and DJDeedle chatted like old friends.

Although DJDeedle hasn't bought into this theory yet: for decades, audiophiles have believed that any sound piped through an amplifier using fragile, short-lived vacuum tubes becomes silkier and richer, even digital sound, and sound in compressed formats like mp-3. Condon had been ordered by the Air Force to conduct a survey of UFO reports to determine once and for all the merit of the phenomenon. In short, the study concluded that UFOs represented only misidentification and hoaxes.

Stairways to Heaven

For lo these many years, gentle listener, DJDeedle has observed most faithfully a "no Stairway" policy in both his musical and personal affairs. But when the venerable WFMU collected over sixty (60) versions of Led Zeppelin's moldy classic, "Stairway to Heaven," how could a dj resist turning all those minutes of musical roadkill into musical overkill for your listening pleasure? Fear not. DJDeedle will not subject you to all sixty-plus versions. Rather, DJDeedle has reviewed them all, selected the gems, and distilled a them to about 40 minutes.

Trust me, after you've listened to this many versions of "Stairway to Heaven" you'll likely adopt a "no Stairway" policy of your own.

Nowadays, it is easy for anyone to sample sections of recordings from LPs or CDs to make new recordings using your computer sequencer.

As many of you know, DJDeedle, along with the long suffering one and two dear friends of ours, are training for the Washington DC AIDS Marathon (aka Marine Corps Marathon). Although the torture of the training and the actual marathon are enough incentive, the real reason we are doing this is to raise money for the Whitman Walker Clinic, here in DC. As many of you know, the Clinic is the DC area's leading provider of direct medical care, food, housing, legal services, and other important services for those who have HIV or AIDS and don't have the means to pay. The Clinic was DJDeedle's neighbor for several years, and this dj has volunteered quite a lot of hours there. I can vouch for how vitally important their work is, and how truly grateful their clients are.

As one might imagine, this marathon requires quite a bit of training, consisting mainly of long runs. Fortunately, because Deedle possesses dj powers, he can make his own running mixes. This week Deedle presents just one of the many continuous musical works that keeps him running when the feet say, "no," the knees protest, and there are still miles left to run.

Whether you were around or not when John, Paul, George and Ringo were the Beatles (the band broke up in 1970), you probably know the unique sound of the Beatles. Often imitated, but never duplicated, the Beatles' sound is immediately identifiable, no matter what some heretic with a sequencer, or computer, or mixing board might do to it.

This heretical collection of Beatles mashups represents the distillation of a huge number of mash works, including Deedle's very own "Come Tangerine Together."
