Welcome to DeckConstruct Series 10! It’s good to be back, talking about all things MTG.

It only took nine months, almost to the day, but DC 111 is finally out! The British might be used to waiting and queueing, but that’s a bit excessive!

In this episode, the last of a short series 9, I talk about the last nine months of Magic, life and everything. Included are some extremely short set recaps, some Legacy decks and some wargaming!

This week I talk about lands and manabases, and what to think about when making one. To kick things off, I start with Limited and share a technique that might help you out when you’re staring at 25-odd cards and wondering how to make the mana fit.

After that is a look at Constructed manabases, with examples of decks that have unusual land counts, and why that is. I also quickly touch on why fetchlands are a better first buy than dual lands.

DC 100 – Begin Again From The Beginning

It took 3 years, 8 months and 1 week, but DC has finally reached the 100th episode! Huzzah! Drinks all round!

There were many things I could’ve done for the big one-zero-zero, but in the end I decided to keep it simple and focus on two things: new and returning players, and new formats.

The first part of the show is about advice I would give to a new player who is just taking their first steps into the wide world of MTG. I offer some bits of advice that you might not necessarily hear from your local store, things that you generally pick up from experience.

After that is a look at Modern and Overextended, two new Eternal formats (well, I hope Modern is an Eternal format!) that may one day replace Extended. I talk about what each format is made up of and their banned lists, as well as how I feel about each one.

DC 92 – New Phyrexia And The Legacy Of Duals

It’s Friday, a day on which, according to Rebecca Black, you should get down on. Indeed. Anyway, as it’s Friday, DC 92 is out!

This week show kicks off with a look at some topics that made news over the past week. The Action set finally got a name and new promo cards were shown off for Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. I’m not sure that I’ll always do a “news bit” like this, but this week it made sense.

After that is some discussion of Legacy, specifically the Richmond Legacy League and the discussion of dual lands that raged over Twitter a few days ago.

Welcome to DeckConstruct series 8! New series, new music and new focus. This series will mainly cover Legacy, Casual and Pauper, but this week it covers none of those.

DC 90 – Mirrodin Besieged Pre-release, Magic Poker

It’s Friday once again, and show 90, the final show of series 7, is ready to go!

This week, the show is about poison, or rather the poison archetype. Scars has infected Magic with a lot of new cards that love to deal poison damage, so I’ve decided to look at how a Standard poison deck might come together.

DC 76 – Making An MTG Podcast

Show 76 is now online! But hang on, it’s Wednesday, not Friday. Why has the show come out today? Well, when my computer’s power supply blew up a couple of months ago, there weren’t any shows for two weeks, so I thought it’d be nice to do two shows this week and catch up a bit.

This show is about podcasting, and how to put together your own MTG podcast. This is another of those subjects that I’ve wanted to cover for ages, but never got round to doing until now.

To kick off, I talk about things to consider before you say the first word of your first show, things to plan which will make recording your show a bit easier later on.

After that is a discussion of hardware and software. I go over things like microphones, mixers, audio editors and sequencers.

Finally, I mention some tips that will hopefully improve your podcast, should you wish to do one (or if you do one already!).

DC 72 – The Newcomer’s Primer

London was warm and sunny this week, and the weekend looks like more of the same. So, what better time to release show 72 into the wild!

This week’s show is one that I’ve wanted to do for a long time: a primer for newcomers to Magic. If you’ve played for a while, you might already know everything I talk about in this show, but a lot of DC’s audience are newcomers to the game.

To start off, I discuss what some of the more popular formats are comprised of and some miscellaneous things, too.

Next, I go over some Magic terms you’ll come across.

Lastly, I explain some keywords you’ll find in the game, and end with an explanation of some Magic slang you’ll probably hear while playing.

DC 71 – The New Extended and the Rise of Double Standard

The sun’s out, Wimbledon starts today and it looks like this week will, overall, be quite awesome. So, let’s go ahead and release show 71! It’s a bit late, but that’s because I wanted to think about the subject of the show over the weekend.

This week’s (or rather, last week’s) show is about the Extended changes that Wizards announced last Friday, June 18th 2010. The changes will affect the format pretty dramatically, and in the first half of the show I explain the changes and what I think of them.

In the second half, I talk about what the changes might mean for the Extended metagame.

DC 50 – Worlds 2009

We’ve done it! DeckConstruct has reached it’s 50th show! Thank you to everyone who has listened to the show, subscribed, sent us an email or posted on our forums. It’s because of you that DC has been able to see 50 shows. Here’s to another 50!

This week’s show is about Worlds 2009, which took place in Rome, Italy from November 19-22. I go over what I saw, some stuff that happened during Worlds weekend and also what Rome is like. You’ll also hear an interview with Aaron Forsythe, Director of Magic R&D, and a quick interview with Andre Coimbra, the new World Champion.

DC 43 – Ten from Lorwyn, Knight Rock, Dev Chat

After a bit of a delay, show 43 is now online! It’s ma-hoo-sive, clocking in at 55 minutes and is the longest ever episode of DC, beating show 27‘s long-standing record.

Headlining this week’s show is a look back at Lorwyn. I go over ten cards from Lorwyn/Shadowmoor (or Lorwynmoor if you prefer) that I had fun with while the set was in Standard. These aren’t necessarily power cards like Bitterblossom or the Planeswalkers, but more of a personal selection.

Next up on the bill is a rock-like deck that I’ve been putting together for Extended, that could also work well in Standard with a few tweaks.

Finishing off the show is a discussion of the dev chat that happened in IRC on Thursday, October 8 2009. I pick out some questions that caught my eye and discuss the answers the WotC team gave.

This is because, as we explain in the show, Dan is going back to Malaysia and so we won’t be able to get together to do the show anymore. Also in this week’s show, we talk about the colours of Shards of Alara and how they’ve been given names and put into “colour tribes” of sorts. Finally, we talk about the Wizards Play Network (WPN) and how you can use it to get a playgroup started if there isn’t one in your area.

DC 35 – M-Fest 2008, WotC Restructuring, 2009 PT Schedule

It’s been a while, but we’re back! Show 35 was recorded today and is now up for downloading! It’s another long show for us at almost 40 minutes, but then anything over 30 minutes feels long by our reckoning. It’s sort of like southerners thinking that anywhere north of Watford is “up north”.

This week we talk about M-Fest which happened last weekend. We were both there and had a mixed experience at the event. We also talk about the recently announced restructuring at Wizards of the Coast, the 2009 Pro Tour schedule which was revealed today, and the next preview card from Shards of Alara.

As mentioned in the show, there will be a WPN-sanctioned Legacy tournament happening next Wednesday, August 27th, in Richmond, South-West London (or Surrey, depending on who you ask) at the Old Ship pub. The tournament entry fee will be only Â£1 and it kicks off at 7pm, so come down if you can and play some Legacy! It’s a crazy format and lots of fun.

Show 31 is a bit late this week due to technical difficulties of a hosting nature, and we apologise for that. However, it’s all been sorted now. We’ve kept the date as July 4 for continuity purposes (and because it just looks better in a strange sort of way).

This week’s show is partly about the future (as seen from the present) as we look at Eventide. We talk about cards that could be future constructed staples, as well as cards that might not be, but caught our eye all the same. The Eventide segments are full of spoilers, so if you’re not partial to a few spoiled cards you might want to “look away now”.

We also talk about GP Buenos Aires which was a Standard GP that took place last weekend. It was a Summer Series GP, which meant extra pro points to the victor.

DC 05 – Dunerider Outlaw, Buying and Trading Cards

Another Friday, another episode of DC! Show 05 is now online.

As explained in the show, Card Focus will become an occasional segment from next week. This week, though, it looks at Dunerider Outlaw, a card that might show up at Champs/States quite a bit.

The Feature looks at buying and selling cards on eBay, and trading on forums at places such as MTG Salvation and the official MTG forums.

I just want to point out two other changes. First is that, you might have noticed no Backstage for show 04. We’ve decided to discontinue it, as life has just become too busy to write it and do the podcast every week. On a happier note, though, the show is now being recorded via two mics, so hopefully this will result in less room (and PC) noise.
