Credit report repair is big business these days and credit repair scams are all around us. If you don’t have the time or patience to dispute the inaccuracies on your credit report yourself, and if you want to know other methods of improving your credit score, an independent credit repair company or consultant could be just what you need.

But how can you tell who is genuine? The Credit Repair Organizations Act was passed to help you do just that. Avoid the scammers by knowing what to look out for.

1. Shop around for a company so that you get a feeling for the standards that they all have. As with all services, it is usually better not to respond to people who contact you cold, directly by telephone or letter. Even if you agree to meet them, do not be pressurized into signing anything until you have had a chance to shop around.

2. Avoid any company that tries to collect money from you up front. They should not require payment until they have performed some services for you.

3. Do not select a company that makes guarantees about the results that they will get for you – for example, if they promise you a credit score increase of 100 points. They can advertise the average results that they have gotten for other clients, but they cannot promise you a certain score because they do not control that. Until they see your report and know your circumstances, they cannot be sure that they can improve your credit score at all.

4. They must inform you that you have a right to repair your credit for yourself. You do not need to hire anybody unless you want to. If their written information does not tell you this, they may not be legitimate.

5. Do not enter a contract that you cannot cancel. You should be allowed to cancel at any time. You would have to pay for the work that they had done for you up to that point, but no more.

6. Avoid any company that offers file segregation. This is an illegal practice that involves creating a new credit identity for you.

If you are tempted to go for file segregation remember that if the credit repair company is caught, so are you. You would be breaking the law too. All it takes is for one unhappy client to report them and all of their files will be examined, resulting in trouble for their other clients … including you.

People who file for bankruptcy almost always receive letters from companies promising to solve all of their credit problems in this way. They will say that it is legal but after your new credit file is set up, any time that you apply for credit you will have to lie on the application forms. Giving false information to obtain credit is fraud. You can be fined or even sent to jail.

There are plenty of legitimate companies out there that can help you with improving your credit score. Keep these points in mind and you will have no trouble avoiding the most common credit repair scams.

These credit report repair score tips will show you how to deal with those negatives on your credit report – permanently. If your credit record is poor, you have missed payments and made a lot of loan applications, read on.

1. Have Any Mistakes Corrected

If there are mistakes on your credit report, write to the credit bureau and have them corrected. Sometimes even if they do not agree that it was a mistake, you can add a comment onto your report to explain. Be sure to keep your comments very cool – do not accuse anybody of lying, for example.

2. Make A Financial Plan

The only way to improve your credit score after taking care of any errors, is to start to manage your finances in a different way. Set a budget and stick to it. Allow yourself a small amount of ‘mad money’ each week that you can spend on whatever you want. Beyond that, only buy what is truly necessary.

3. Keep Your Credit Cards

The fastest way to build a good credit score is to have a good payment history on your credit cards, so don’t cut them up. Just be sure only to use them for necessary purchases.

A good number of cards to have is two to four. With only one you will not be able to repair your score quickly, but if you have more than four it looks bad. If you have too many cards with large balances on them all, you would probably be better off financially and for your credit score if you consolidate some of your debts into a lower interest loan. However, be careful not to keep doing this – see #7.

If you need to reduce your number of cards, drop the newest ones first. A card that you have had for a longer time will count for more points as you start to build up a good credit history again.

4. Do Not Miss Payments

Never miss a payment on any loan or bill that will show on your credit report. Even if a loan company or credit card company offers you a month or two ‘grace’ where you would not have to make payments, do not accept this offer. It may still show as a missed payment on your credit report. So keep on making those payments, and be sure they will arrive by the due date.

5. Pay More Than The Minimum When Possible

Send more than the minimum payment for credit cards any time that you can. This will help your credit rating, save you interest, and bring you closer to the goal of having the debt paid off.

Also, don’t max out your cards. Keep the balance well below your credit limit. This will improve your credit report.

6. Don’t Apply All Over

Something that will quickly flag you as a possible ‘problem payer’ is if you make a lot of loan applications, often switch credit cards to take advantage of offers, or take out new loans to pay off old ones. If you need to consolidate your debts, only do it once. While you are shopping around for the best terms, try to avoid giving your name and address.

7. Talk To Them

Everybody hates to pick up the phone and call somebody that they owe money to, but it is much better than waiting for them to contact you. There is no point hoping they will not notice that you are missing payments. If you don’t call them they may start with the collection agencies, and that’s about the worst thing that can happen for your credit score.

When you call them, explain your situation truthfully but briefly. However difficult your situation, they have heard it before. Decide what you could afford before you call, make them an offer and be prepared to negotiate. Help them to create a payment plan that is realistic for you, even if it is a little more than you hoped. If they offer you a couple of payment-free months, say ‘No thank you, I would prefer to keep paying a little every month’. This prevents missed payments showing on your record (see #4) and proves that you really do want to get this debt paid.

When you have a payment plan worked out with them, try asking them if they would agree to stop reporting on you, so that you have a chance to repair your credit score. Many companies will agree, provided that you do not miss any payments on your new plan.

Following these tips will not only improve your credit score, it will also teach you a way to manage your finances that will help you become and stay debt-free in the future. You will find it very empowering as well as bringing peace of mind. Be sure to maintain your credit report repair score at a high level to achieve permanent financial stability.

Getting a guaranteed bad credit personal loan is not so difficult now that the internet gives us access to so many more companies than we had in the past. Before the internet, somebody living in a small town might not have much option but the banks, and banks are very conservative when it comes to lending money. They do not like to lend to anybody with a bad credit history.

Online, many companies advertise loans specifically for people with a bad credit history or low credit score. This usually means that you or somebody in your close family had trouble paying back a loan in the past, or have outstanding debts, or something similar. Sometimes these low credit score loans are guaranteed.

If you have a low credit score for any reason you will probably have to pay a higher rate of interest on your loan than a person with a better rating would pay. This is because the lender considers there is a higher risk that you will not pay. The higher interest rates are a kind of insurance for them against the trouble they will have in getting the money back from anybody who cannot repay. This does not mean that they will not chase after you if you do not pay. It is just to cover them for the legal costs that they consider they are more likely to have.

Be sure always to read the small print of a loan application. First you will want to know if it is a secured or an unsecured loan. A secured loan means that you must offer some property or possessions that the loan company can take from you if you do not pay. This makes it easier to get a loan with a lower interest rate, but you may lose whatever you offered as security if you cannot make the repayments.

Real estate is the most popular security for a loan, but the majority of people with a bad credit history do not own real estate. If you would prefer a secured loan but do not own your home, check if the company will accept any other type of security.

It is important to be sure you are dealing with a good reputable company. It is easy for anybody to have a professional looking website but it is important to know who they are. Investigate the company with the Better Business Bureau and check out any parent company or subsidiary companies that are named on their website.

Make sure you know what will happen if you need to miss a payment, and whether the loan can be recalculated over a longer period if you need that. Some companies are more flexible than others on these points.

Some people with a low credit score take out one loan to pay back all of their other debts (a consolidated loan). Consider carefully whether it is worth doing this. Some of your other debts may have very high interest rates and it might save you money as well as time to have one consolidated loan. However, sometimes there are penalties for repaying your other loans early. This can be complicated to figure out. If you hate this kind of paperwork, try to find somebody who will look over the figures with you before you sign.

Sometimes a person can have bad credit because of something like identity theft where somebody else has run up debts in your name. To the banks and other lenders this does not make a lot of difference. They do not care whether any debt that is showing against your name was your fault or not. However in this situation you should do all that you can to repair your credit score before getting a guaranteed bad credit personal loan.

How to remove wrong info from credit report is one of the first things you need to know if you want to improve your credit score.

If there is incorrect information on your credit report it should be simple to remove, but sometimes it can be a long process. The most important thing is to be patient, persistent and business like. Do not give up, but do not write angry letters either.

There are two kinds of information that may be showing wrongly on your credit report. There may be mistakes in either your personal details or the financial information. The way that you deal with both of these is the same.

1. Write to the credit bureau setting out exactly what is wrong and enclosing proof of the correct information. Keep a copy of everything that you send.

2. Ask them to provide a new credit report so that you can see the corrections have been made.

3. Send everything by certified mail. Ask for a receipt and keep it. You may need to prove they received your request on a certain date (see step 5).

4. If they have not replied to you with the correction made, after a while you can write again referring to the date of your previous letter and the date that you know they received it.

5. By law they must make the correction within 30 days of receiving your letter, if everything they needed was in there. If they ask for more proof, send it by certified mail and keep a copy again.

6. If they do not correct the information within 30 days of receiving all the information they requested, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You will need to provide copies of everything that you sent. Make new copies so that you always keep a copy yourself.

At the same time, you will want to check your credit report with the other two credit bureaus. They may be showing the same mistakes, and just because you had it corrected on one report does not mean it will be corrected on the others. You can check your credit report once a year with each bureau without it reflecting badly.

When you write to a credit bureau, you may be real angry about the mistake which could be causing you big problems financially. It is important to stay very cool. Imagine you are acting on behalf of somebody else, not doing this for yourself.

The more quickly you need to have the mistake corrected, the more important it is to be business like. Remember that the person who deals with your request is probably not the same person who made the mistake originally, so you should not blame them. They will be much more willing to help you out if you are polite.

Keep in mind that you do have the right to have your credit report corrected and it should be a simple process that will only cost a few dollars for certified mail etc, if you do it yourself. If you have trouble getting the right tone in your letter, you may find it helpful to consult a credit repair company who will know how to remove wrong info from credit report.

In the area of credit repair Canada has many consultants who will offer to help you restore your credit rating if you have a bad credit score. These can be a big help to some people. Although it is possible to cover many of the necessary points yourself, most people do not know where to start. It helps having someone who is a professional to take care of this for you.

A bad credit score can be caused by many factors. Of course, you may have debts that you have not paid, loans where you are not making the payments, outstanding fines, or other things that you probably know about well enough. But sometimes a credit score is affected by something quite small – one missed payment, for example.

It is not unusual for somebody without any debts at all to find that there is a problem with their credit score. They apply for a new credit card or a mortgage perhaps, and are refused without understanding why. If this happens to you it is very important to find out what has happened. It could be a mistake but you may find that you are the victim of identity theft.

The first thing to do if you suspect that your credit score has been affected by something, is to check out a credit report. You will need the most detailed report that you can find. If you can see any mistakes on it, you can try to resolve them by calling the company concerned. If you have trouble, you can try asking at your provincial or territorial Canadian consumer affairs office, or you can seek out a private credit repair consultant to help you.

A very large number of people who check their credit report for the first time find some mistakes in it. For example, you may find that your score is affected by the actions of the last person who owned or rented your home. In situations like this you have a right to have the information corrected. You may have to provide supporting documents and you should expect it to take a little time. A Canadian credit repair company can help you here by knowing who to contact and how to approach them.

If the lender or service provider agrees that they made an error, the credit report agency has 30 days (except in Alberta where it is 90 days) to correct the information on your credit report. If they do not agree that it was a mistake, but you believe you are right, you can send in a statement to the credit-reporting agency giving your explanation. This will not affect your score but it will be added to your credit report for other institutions to see.

If the information was accurate, it is not usually possible to have it removed until the legal time that it will expire, but you can make sure that it is done as soon as this time is up. Sometimes you may find that there is a mistake in the date or the amount.

You may also be able to take action to improve your credit score in other ways while you are waiting for the required time period to expire. You will be able to get advice on how to build up a record of good credit practice during this time to balance out the negatives that you may have. When it comes to credit repair Canada has plenty of legislation and advice to help the consumer.

A credit repair consultant can be a huge benefit to people who are having trouble keeping their credit score good and do not know how to fix it by themselves. Everybody needs a little help sometimes, and it is great to have someone to turn to when you cannot handle all the paperwork that there is, all alone.

Credit repair comes down to two things:

1. Examining the credit reports for errors, and disputing them with the credit bureau or agency.

2. Reducing your debts and improving your credit history.

The consultant can help with both of these. With the first one, you need to work with the consultant to find any mistakes that there may be in your credit report. If you find some (and a lot of people do) you have to write to the credit bureau that produced the report setting out the correction that is needed and enclosing copies.

These letters need to be very businesslike and it is important to send all of the right paperwork to the credit bureau, otherwise they will just keep asking for more information. Maybe you don’t have all the documents that you need, and you could use some help knowing where to get them. Or maybe you don’t write great letters, or don’t have the time to do all of this. That’s where a consultant can help.

A credit repair specialist will also usually be able to advise you on debt management and how to reduce your debts. This could include consolidation of your loan, but you will need to look closely at interest rates on the loans that would be available to you. Sometimes it is better to keep the debts that you have, even if it means more payments to keep track of.

It is also important to understand the effect that asking for another loan may have on your credit score right now, if it is already low. The consultant can explain all of this to you. They can also advise you on how to approach the companies that you owe money to, in order to have them agree to stop reporting on you.

If you are having trouble making the payments on the loans and credit cards that you have, you may need to see a debt counselor. To repair your credit you will need to be making all of your payments on time. You should also be aiming to reduce the balances on your credit cards. If your cards are maxed out all of the time or even if they are more than half way to the maximum, this is something that you can work on to improve your credit score.

Some people have a medium to low credit score simply because they never had much credit at all. This can seem strange. Why would people who were never in debt not have a great score? The answer is that the loan companies do not know what they are dealing with.

No credit history is better than a bad credit history, but it is not as good as somebody who uses credit and always pays it back. If you are in this position, the credit repair consultant will tell you how you can easily build up a great credit history without ever getting into debt.

A lot of people ask us, ‘How to get a copy of my credit report?‘ There are many things in life these days that require having a good credit score, including applying for a loan, renting an apartment, applying for credit cards and even certain jobs. If you are thinking of taking out a mortgage you should definitely check your credit score before you start looking at real estate even if you never had any debts in your life. You may find some surprising things on it.

A credit report contains a person’s credit score or rating and all of their credit history. It shows whether a person has missed payments on a credit card or loan, whether payment of certain bills was made on time, and any outstanding debts such as unpaid court judgments and tax liens. Of course bankruptcy also shows up too.

There are three recognized credit bureaus in the USA. All of these keep independent reports on practically every adult in the country.

When you apply for a loan, the finance company will apply to whichever bureau it is a member of, to get your score and your report. Usually they will make a decision based on the score alone. Sometimes, if your score is right around their cutoff point, they make take into account the details of your credit history.

If you ever get turned down for a loan you should check all of your credit reports right away. Do not apply for another loan until you have discovered what the problem is, because any rejected application is going to bring your score down even lower. If there are mistakes, you can have them corrected before you make another application.

Be careful not to have too many people check your credit in a short time. A lot of enquiries cause the report to be flagged. So do not give loan companies, potential landlords etc permission to check your credit score until you have decided that you definitely want the loan or apartment that you were looking at. Ten different landlords applying for a credit report on you within a short time would flag you as a possible bad credit risk.

The three credit bureaus that keep reports on you if you are a United States resident are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. You can find all of these online, but do not apply direct to them to see your report. The services they provide through their websites are for people who want to see their report more often. You probably do not need this.

Under the FACT Act (Fair Credit Reporting Act) consumers have the right to see their reports once per year for free. You can get all three credit reports together by going here: http://www.annualcreditreport.com

However you can also get a free or low-cost report in some other circumstances, even if you already saw it less than a year ago:

- if you have received an adverse action notice in the last 60 days because of information in a credit report

- if you are unemployed or receiving welfare

- if you know that you have been the victim of fraud or ID theft, and you think this may have affected your credit score

- if your state law allows you to get more free or low-price credit reports.

If you want to see your credit report more than once in a year and the above points do not apply, the companies are allowed to charge you. You could expect to pay around $10 for each report.

In the first part of these free credit report repair tips, we saw how to work out how much you will need for different types of expenses. Here’s how to turn that into a monthly budget plus some extra secrets that will help you to sort out your finances with as little pain as possible, permanently.

4. Your Monthly Budget

Your monthly budget is: fixed expenses + large flexible expenses + spending money for one month.

If this is around the amount that you have in income, congratulations! You have a realistic budget. If it is a little over, look to see if you can reduce some of your flexible costs.

If this figure is way over what you have coming in, you will need to do some serious thinking about how to either cut your expenses or increase your income. Assuming your budget did not include a lot of unnecessary goods, increasing income is probably best.

5. How To Handle The Money

For the fixed expenses, simply keep an account of what they are, so that after 12 months you can create a new, more accurate budget for the next year.

For large flexible expenses you have a certain allowance per month. Even though you may use credit cards to purchase these items, don’t go over the budget and be sure to pay off the amount that you spent, the next month (plus any minimum payment for amounts that you owe). If you want something and you don’t have the money this month, wait until next month. Spend less each month if you can, so you have a little extra for Christmas or a vacation.

Then withdraw the weekly budget amount for your food, gasoline etc from the bank in cash each week on a Thursday. Buy all that stuff with cash, never use a card at the grocery store. If you have spent it all before next Thursday you have to wait. On the other hand, if you have plenty left, you get to keep it. You may want to take it out of your purse or wallet and save it somewhere for an emergency or a special treat.

Why Thursday? Because it makes sure you have enough money for the weekend. If you take your cash on a Monday you may sometimes have nothing left by Friday and most people would then be tempted to spend more. Running out of cash on a Monday or Tuesday and waiting until Thursday to get more is not such a big deal for most people.

6. Making It Last: Secrets To Keep A Hold Of That Cash Right Through The Week

- If you need gas in your car to get to work, fill the tank as soon as you have your week’s cash. If one full tank is not enough for the week, keep that money separate from your other cash, or include gas in your monthly expenses instead and pay by card.

- Never buy things that you don’t need just because they are on special, and don’t buy bulk to save a few cents unless it is something that you use every day. If you buy a lot of stuff that you won’t use right now, you will not have enough money for the things that you do need.

- If kids are always asking for candy and toys and you find it hard to say no, give them a weekly cash budget too and have them make their own decisions. Sure, the first time they may be sick on candy on the first day, but they will soon learn.

- Writing down every cent that you spend can be real helpful in seeing where you could save more, especially in the first few weeks.

Congratulations! You graduated from free credit report repair school.

Free credit report repair is simple. Simple, but not easy. Once you have checked that your report is accurate, you will need to rethink some aspects of your lifestyle, especially around how you spend money.

The way to repair your credit is to start to have a good credit history, making payments regularly, slowly but steadily reducing your debts, and not taking out a lot of different loans. This requires something that many people would prefer to avoid: budgeting.

If the very idea of setting a budget turns you off, you are not alone. However, once you have done it, you will find that living within a budget is amazingly empowering. You will no longer have to worry about money because you will know exactly where you are. You will not find nasty surprises waiting in your mailbox, or debt collection agency men at the door.

So here’s how to do it, step by step.

1. Write What You Spend

For at least one week before you set your budget, write down everything that you spend. You don’t have to include regular bill payments, but any cash that you spend and any time you use your cards in a store or a gas station. You can do this in the back of your diary. Don’t miss anything.

You will probably find that just knowing that you have to write it down helps you to think twice before you buy anything that is not necessary. You can save a lot of money just by doing this. Consider buying a small notebook and continuing this to help you keep your expenditure low.

2. Estimate Your Fixed Expenses

Work out approximately what your unavoidable expenses will come out to over a year. This should include rent, insurance, electricity, taxes, loan payments, and also things that you might have to take a guess at, like household and auto repairs. Don’t include anything that is covered in #3.

When you have the annual total, divide it by 12 for a monthly total. This is your monthly budget for those items.

3. Set An Amount For Your Flexible Expenses

Flexible expenses include food, clothes, gasoline, haircuts, entertainment, furniture, gifts, etc. Now clearly some of these are necessary expenses, and you cannot cut them out. But we call them flexible expenses because unlike the bills in #2, how much you spend on them is within your control.

First, set a monthly budget for the larger expenses that you will not have so often: clothes, furniture, vacations etc.

Then, set a weekly amount that will cover food, gasoline, entertainment and anything else: your spending money. This should be the lowest amount that you think you can manage on. Multiply this by 4.25 to get a monthly figure. (Yes, there are 4.25 weeks in a month: not 4!)

Click on to Part 2 of this report for more free credit report repair tips and the most important part: how to stick to your budget painlessly!

There is a lot of discussion about credit reports and ratings, but exactly what is a bad credit score? Why do some people constantly get turned down for loans while others, who don’t have any more money, are instantly approved with no trouble?

Credit ratings are an important part of everybody’s life these days. Even if you don’t want a loan, your credit score can affect your application for credit cards, apartment leases, and even some jobs. It can also affect anything that involves you committing to monthly payments – auto financing, some insurance schemes, even having a phone hooked up in your house.

FICO or Fair Isaac Corporation is the best known credit score calculator in the USA. The exact mathematical formula or algorithm of the FICO credit calculation is very complex, but it is based on all the financial information they can get about you. This includes your credit history, loan and mortgage applications, missed payments if any, and many other details.

Some lending companies will use the FICO score directly to estimate whether a person is likely to be able to pay any financial commitments that they are applying for. Other companies are members of a credit bureau who supply them with credit rating information on applicants.

The three credit bureaus in the USA each have their own way of calculating a credit score but they are based on the FICO score. An individual’s score is updated regularly. If you have a very good score, you will most likely be approved for low interest loans and credit cards.

The range of FICO scores is from 300 to 850. The higher you score, the better.

Around 725 or higher would be a very good score. With a score like that you have a good chance of getting approved for the apartment, car loan or mortgage that you want to apply for, and you will be able to get low interest rates in most cases.

Between 580 and 725 you will still have no trouble getting the finance that you need but the interest rates are likely to increase as you reach the lower part of that scale.

Below 580 is a bad credit score, and below 500 is real bad. The lower you go here, the more trouble you will have finding credit, and the more interest you will have to pay. It doesn’t seem fair that the worse off you are, the more they make you pay, right? But it’s because you are seen as a bad risk. Your interest rates reflect the costs they think they might have getting the money back from you if you don’t pay it.

If you have a bad credit score you need to know that before you start looking for loans. It is best to know your exact score and be upfront with it when you call any kind of loan company. That way if they are going to turn you down, you know right away without wasting any more time – and without having rejected applications appearing on your credit report, pushing your score even lower.

Knowing your own personal credit rating will help to get you the best credit deals available to you, now that you know what is a bad credit score and what is a good credit score.
