Habitat -- Explorations of Home and Shelter in Contemporary Art

I have two paintings and two photographs in this exhibition opening February 24th until May 13, 2011 at the California Bank of Commerce in Lafayette, CA. The exhibition can be viewed Monday through Friday 9 am - 5 pm with an Opening Reception on Thursday, February 24, 2011, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Dave Bown Projects 1st Semiannual Competition

Dave Bown Projects is pleased to announce the results of the 1st Semiannual Competition, which was curated by Eva Frosch; co-owner of frosch&portmann in New York. This competition features images of the work of 25 contemporary artists. $5,000 USD (1st Prize: $2,500; 2nd Prize: $1,500; 3rd Prize: $1,000) will be awarded to SpY, Brad Nelson, and Allison Cortson, respectively.

In my new project titled North, I am using the diverse, surreal, and stark landscape of Iceland as the stage for my continued exploration of the construction of identity of girls. In our culture, “North” is used to define all other directions. As I raise my daughter, and navigate through the ups and downs of parenthood, I hope to steer her ultimately on the right course.

In late May 2010, six days after volcanic activity slowed, I drove around Iceland photographing the landscape. I am drawn to isolated settings and elements that may feel slightly awkward or quirky. Separately, I photograph girls at an age where these same adjectives could describe their journey from childhood to young womanhood. My work combines the images to explore ideas about identity development, or in the absence of an actual girl, I use the landscape as a metaphor for these ideas. I am fascinated by the way girls act and consciously present themselves as they try to figure out who they are and who they ultimately will become. There are moments of self-confidence and self-doubt, discoveries and disillusions, whimsy and seriousness, innocence and knowledge. Part of them wants to hang on to the innocence of childhood, yet they are eager to grow up. Navigating relationships is also a big part of this process. I am interested in how the girls present themselves in relation to the viewer, and how they fit within a social context with others, as well as their expectations of the world and how they see they fit in it.

After many months of anticipation (and then intense scrutiny of the volcano which decided to stop 6 days before my journey began), I had an amazing trip to take photographs in Iceland. The diverse, surreal, spectacular country was everything that I had hoped for.

I am really excited about the photographs I took and the ideas I have to incorporate them into my work about girls. Above is a sneak peek of a few of the things I saw. (click on each image for a slightly larger view)

PDN 30 exhibition during MOPLA

Clark | Oshin Gallery invites you to join us for the “2010 PDN Emerging 30” photography exhibition at its location at The Icon, 5450 Wilshire Bvd., Los Angeles. Presented in conjunction with Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA), an opening reception is scheduled for Thursday April 8, 2010 from 6pm - 9pm. The exhibition continues through May 28. My photograph, Manicured, 2009, will be part of the exhibition!

Kindergarten Auction Project

My daughter's Kindergarten Classroom Auction Project that I have devoted many recent hours to is finally finished! We created an Art Cookbook called "What's For Dinner?"

I painted portraits of each of the children and their teachers (and Headmaster, and Head of Lower school too...) Each child painted and adorned watercolor paintings to dress their portraits. And we asked each family to provide family-friendly recipes to accompany the artwork. We also included some cute quotes from the kids.

The original book was enclosed in a beautiful leather bound custom-engraved album, and then we also created reproduction copies on spill-proof tear-proof paper.

The kids were super excited to see their finished portraits last week in class, as were the parents who got to bid on the original book and buy reproduction copies at our school's successful fundraising event last night.

I am honored and thrilled to be included in PDN's 30 for 2010 and happy that I can finally announce it after several months of keeping it quiet! You can view all 30 photographers with images and interviews on the Photo District News website at pdnonline.com. And pick up a copy of the March issue of PDN at bookstores everywhere. I'll post a pic of my page from the magazine once I have a copy.

Clark Gallery is honored to present HEAD ON, a group exhibition of contemporary portraits conveyed in painting and photography. The thirteen distinguished gallery and invited artists included in HEAD ON are photographers Linda Connor, Eric Gottesman, Deborah Hamon, Pieter Hugo, and David Prifti and painters Randall Deihl, Frank Egloff, Gregory Gillespie, Gregory Grenon, Sharon Kaitz, Marcus Kenney, Jane Smaldone, and Andrew Stevovich.

All are welcome to join the artists for a reception on Saturday, March 13th from 4-6pm. The exhibition runs from March 2 through April 3, 2010.

The paintings and photographs in HEAD ON reference portraiture’s traditions and history, compositional formalities, and symbolism while simultaneously cracking the veneer of those historically founded elements to present contemporary interpretations and expressions of identity. The diverse perspectives and varied artistic aesthetics in this exhibit share an affinity for communicating individuality in a community that stretches around the world. Figures of different ages, creeds, and color gaze at the viewer, linked together by both their similarities and differences. Unapologetic “head on” perspectives are countered by images in which the figure is either seamlessly incorporated into his or her surrounding landscape or is evidently affected by that landscape. The figures portray a cultivated identity often designed to conceal vulnerabilities within, anxieties and emotions that manage to reach the viewer through expression, composure, and detachment.

Picnic Magazine

I have a 5 page spread in the current Innovators issue of Picnic Magazine a contemporary art, literature and design magazine based in Mexico City.
