No, it's not a nautical themed shop update, but rather a bon voyage to me. I am off to visit my brother in Washington, D.C. He's got some fun things planned and even some antique malls have made it on the itinerary! So I'll be away, but the shop will be in full effect and dressed in red apparently! Somewhere along the line I have started to like red. I used to feel fussy about adding red pieces to the shop, but they have somehow won me over and I quite like all of the red in this update. All of the above is available in the SHOP.

Yup. My favorite color right now is coral. Coral in various shades, and yes I think coral comes in various shades. The weather has been straight up blissful and even summery which is so great because I can look like I took more time to get dressed, but all I really did was slip on a super great dress.

1950s An Impossible Dream silk satin wedding dress

This vintage dress almost seems like the sister to this wedding dress that was in the shop this winter. The same luxurious silk satin that seems to emit it's own luminosity, the thick & detailed beading, the handset zipper; it's really something special and I am so happy to make it available for some lucky bride. It can get real quiet working alone at the shop for hours on end and although I mostly listen to music while I am there I often want to hear something that isn't music, but isn't silence (ok, I know I can't hear silence, but whatever). So I usually watch The Mary Tyler Moore show because it isn't something you have to give your full attention to but it's just nice to have on and hear people talking. If you ask me, the best part of the show, by far, is Rhoda. It's no wonder Valerie Harper landed her own spin-off show, Rhoda, (they are real clever with those show titles, eh?). Yesterday I felt like I was channeling Rhoda with my hair in a scarf and 70s' plaid wrap skirt. I spent the morning (5 hours of it) ironing things for the shop and this skirt was one of those things. Needless to say the skirt is not going to make it into the shop, at least not without my body in it.

There's 250 pieces in the shop right now, that's more then there has ever been. It wasn't intentional though, I was just trucking along adding new things when I noticed there was well over 200 items, and dare I say, I initially though it some kind of mistake. But I am happy to report that it is not a mistake and now I don't see why I can't get the shop to 300 items and work to keep it there like I've been working to keep it at 200.

Slowly I have been washing, mending, ironing and photographing about 2 dozen 1930s/40s housedresses. Some with the sweetest of details, like white cotton scalloped collars, lace trim and waist smocking. No need to look slaggy while you clean the house, right? Yesterday I photographed these five; they'll be making their way into the shop by this weekend, and beyond!

Well it was going to be for the Bird at least, Andrew Bird that is. This was last Thursday & we had tickets to see Andrew Bird in Detroit (happy for shows going to Detroit now as opposed to Ann Arbor, yay!), but I worked in this during the day and didn't much feel like wearing it out at night. Also, it's that time of year when you are cold in the morning but boiling by late afternoon so the tights were overkill as the day wore on. I got the dress on eBay and am always real happy when I can get a little 1960s dress that doesn't need to be shortened.

If you've been visiting the shop long enough you might have noticed I list new items based on color. It's something I have tried hard to break away from but can never seem to do. My brain just won't allow me to let the front page not coordinate for some reason. It keeps me from listing certain amazing pieces so I am putting forth another effort of mix up the shop updates whereas color is concerned. This is sort update is sort of just me just dipping my feet in the water and throwing in a few items that don't "match". We'll see how long I can keep it for now, but in the interim, here's a SHOP update!

You think it'll never happen, you think, "there's no way I'll ever stumble across a bunch of vintage dresses at a yard sale", and then you stumble upon a bunch of dresses at a yard sale and pretty much use all your power not to pee your pants. Happened yesterday, and it happened when I had zero plans of going to any yard sales, because I never really go to yard sales anymore. I was on my way back from an antiques market actually, which proved fruitless, and instead of ignoring the yard sale sign like I usually do, I stopped for some reason - divine intervention! There I found these dresses (some of them 1930s, one even late 1920s) and these necklaces and totally had to look around to see if I was on Candid Camera (does anyone else remember that show?). The dresses have an especially pungent musty odor which is pretty much their only flaw - what the what!?

What about the 1920s/30s brass necklaces though? I mean, I'm nuts for brass jewelry like this, what are the chances I find two at a yard sale? I only now realize as I write this post that the larger necklace is missing a cluster, but I can easily move all the clusters and leaves around to make it look right again. The two new additions are now happily mingling with some other brass necklaces on a wooden rack.

Long story short, never say never people, you just don't know what you can happen when you change your routine, it's certainly a message to me, who can get a bit myopic when it comes to work/life.

Sunday was gorgeous, really damn gorgeous and I had plans to meet my equally gorgeous friend, Claudette for brunch. All I knew was that I wasn't washing my hair so I was going to have to wear a hat (sometimes outfits are built around the most charming of circumstances, I know). I also knew I wanted to match the perfect spring morning and wear something floral and this dress was just the ticket. So of course I had to wear these shoes which meant breaking my rule of "no heels on Sundays", an odd and totally personal rule.

I'd like to give you a rundown of where all the pieces and parts of this outfit came from, but the truth is I can only remember where I got the hat - at an antique mall in Indiana; aside from that I have guess I have had the dress, bag and shoes so long I don't have a hope of remembering their progeny.

Yes the clothing is cool, I so like some of it. Not my favorite fashion collection, to be sure, but the hair! I love the way the hair style is so effortless, minimal, pretty and a bit Lauren Bacall. I've been growing my bangs out, which is a thankless task and seeing these photos was just the thing to reiterate my goal.

Oh but that striped maxi dress? Yes, that's the shit.

I buy something new (not vintage) once every almost never. But I like to pine for things not found at the thrift store, antique mall or on eBay that's for sure. My Pinterest 'want' board is a testament to my window shopping. I think the only thing I'll actually try and buy are the wooden egg crates because due to my proclivity toward cocktails with egg whites, the house always a supply of eggs on hand.
