A series of handy prints

I'm working on a series of 20 x 20 cm prints - for the moment they're mostly 3D procedural mountains, but they're evolving into other objects. I'm using the 3D environment as a virtual photostudio.

Though digital in origin, the prints have a distinct 'handmade' quality, partly due to the coating I apply on them with a spraycan (which helps fixate the ink, and ads uv protection).

In october I'm going to produce an edition of a selection of them: 3 different prints, each in an edition of 12. More information will follow soon, but be prepared to pre-order some!

The paper varies - the ones below are on 320 grams tinted paper.

I'm very proud to be part of the 30 years celebration exhibition of De Ziener gallery, opening Sunday, September 4, and running until October 9.

This exhibition will take place at cultural centre De Markten, Oude Graanmarkt 5, in the heart of Brussels and features works by: Sjoerd Buisman, Julien Coulommier, Alexandra Crouwers, Werner Cuvelier, Mario De Brabandere, Karel De Meester, Jo De Smedt, Eric De Smet, Norman Dilworth, Paul Gees, Patrick Lebret, Jean-Georges Massart, Paul Morez, Walter Swennen, Roeland Tweelinckx, Caroline Van Damme, Philippe Vandenberg, Frank Van Hiel, Elke Van Kerckvoorde,John Van Oers, Stefaan Vermuyten, and Maurice Wyckae.

PULSAR

Pulsar (or Pulsar Facebook) is an initiative by artist David Wauters. Wauters uses an available gallery space in the center of Antwerp (close to Central Station) for a variety of exhibition projects. As an experiment, he invited a number of artists who, in their turn, invited some artists.

This resulted in a fluid and heterogenous non-collective with a core of 8 - 9 artists, aiming to produce a string of exhibitions at the Pulsar space.

Artists involved at the moment: David Wauters, Fia Cielen, Olga Fedorova, Lydia Debeer, Manu Engelen, Vincent Vandaele, Piotr Tolmachov, and me.

On a regular basis we meet and discuss our works, contemporary art in general, art and science, and and politics, and our own artist practice, as preparations for a next Pulsar show.

We involved evolutionary biologist Jan Verpooten, and are working on setting up a project at the University of Leuven, connecting art with science.

On January 22nd the main film of the 3-channel installation 'Inertia' screened at HEDEN: Heelal, an initiative by VHDG in Leeuwarden (NL).

In the dramatically lit setting of an old church/theatre, prof. dr. Rien van de Weijgaert (cosmologic structures, University of Groningen), and artists Martina Lasinger, Daniela De Paulis, and myself presented our work to a diverse, and sharp audience. We were interviewed by Rutger Middendorp, and questioned by the audience.

The main goal of VHDG's evenings is to connect science to art, in this case centered around the theme of the Universe. This was a wonderful evening, starting with an almost magical conversation between the artists, the scientist, and the interviewer in the hour before the public was allowed to enter the 'exhibition' space, or stage.

On February 6, at 16:00 hrs my soloshow 'The White Hide' opens at Studio Omstand (Arnhem, NL). I was invited by Marjolein De Groen, who made an exhibition with her own works in the first weeks of January, and asked me to do a presentation afterwards.

The proportions of the four spaces of Studio Omstand's 'Turbinekamers' are quite awkward: they're higher than their length and width are (about 6m20 high, 3m30 x 4m usable floor space). Also, 3 of the spaces have no daylight due to gigantic steel industrial blinds that take up one whole wall. There's one 'room' with an almost wall to wall window.

'The White Hide' is a small overview exhibition, showing older, new and reviewed works. One of the works is, of course, 'The White Hide', in this setting it's version #IV. See the image below. It's a videoprojection on a slide projection.

Also, I've been busy with works on paper: digital - mostly 3D generated - images are printed on various kinds of drawing paper, resulting in an ongoing series of prints. The texture of the paper is very well visible. The ink lies on top of the paper, making them look a bit like silkscreen prints. Below some examples. These are all 70 x 100 cm (or the other way around).

Two other prints are still waiting to be framed: black on black.

'So what's with the flags?' you might ask. Well, they're part of a train of thought that might lead to a new animation - there's the short version of it. Also, seeing a lot of graphic design from the 50's and 60's made me want to produce some sort of posters/affiches, but without text.

On again another note: the animation that's part of the installation 'Practical Applied Hermetics' (2010 - 2012) functions as a starting point of the visuals for Behoud de Begeerte's literature production of 2016's 'Saint Amour'. As I write this down, parts and modified stills are rerendering with different lights and different settings. The original animation was set in a foggy forest at night, almost like it was underwater. This project more or less forced me to invent the setting for the virtual and nondescript forest of Practical Applied Hermetics.

I put it on an island. The images are turning out quite painterly.

The Manual

'The Manual' premiered at D.ART (Dijlefeesten kunstroute) in Mechelen, and I was awarded a new prize: the Nobelsprijs (named after its initiator Frank Nobels).

As of today, Saturday July 13, a small object I made can be found at Hidden Art/Dold Kunst in Kungsparken and Slottparken in Malmö (Sweden). This was a first experiment in producing something that would - hopefully - be able to stand weather conditions, at least for this summer.

Dold Kunst is an initiative of Tamara De Laval, and was also set up in Los Angeles' Echo Park. This project runs until September 13. Jens Soneryd will do a performance later this summer in Malmö.

From the 1st until the 5th of July, D.ART takes place in a former furniture store in Mechelen. A new work will premiere! It's still in progress, and something quite different from my other works. A production still below:

It features a soundtrack I made, using computer-speech. More info soon.

In September, one of my works will be part of the Horst Arts & Music festival in and around Horst Castle (near Leuven). After the festival, the exhibition will run for a couple of months. More info will follow.

INERTIA @ Amsterdam Art Fair / other announcements

The 3-channel video installation INERTIA will be shown at the first edition of the Amsterdam Art Fair (Stadionplein, Amsterdam), from 27 - 31 May at the booth of gallery LhGWR.

Next to this work, some new video-loops are being shown on a screen. These new loops are heavily influenced by what is known in cinema as 'matte painting' - artificial backgrounds in which live-action is 'composited' (added) later. Due to the many layers of filtering the animations seem to get a painterly quality. Also, they explore machines as personas.

'Charon' shows a monster truck, slowly rotating in mid air above a mountainous, dusty and cloudy landscape. 'Charon' is the name of the ferryman in Greek mythology, who carries the dead across the river Styx in a boat. The truck is a proposed contemporary vehicle to cross the line between the living and the dead.

'Diggers' (this is a working title, and the animation is still in progress) shows a circle of excavators in an evenly rough landscape. There's a hole in front of them. They seem to perform some sort of ritual; a hail to the sky.

One of these films will probably also be shown at D.ART, Mechelen (B), during a festival from July 1st until July 5th at an empty building right across the station.

Eline Van Der Haak schreef op Mister Motley een tamelijk persoonlijke interpretatie van Inertia, gekleurd door het nieuws van de zelfmoord-crash in de Franse Alpen. De tekst gaat vooral over haar associaties bij 'Inertia' in de context van deze gebeurtenis.

Enerzijds raakt daarbij het werk wat ondergesneeuwd, aan de andere kant geeft 'Inertia' blijkbaar een bepaald perspectief aan de situatie.

Op 18 april opent in LhGWR een groepstentoonstelling met de kunstenaars van de galerie. Op moment van dit schrijven tracht ik minstens vijf ideeën in een bepaalde baan te leiden om een nieuw werk te laten zien.

27 T/m 31 vindt de eerste Amsterdam Art Fair plaats in de Citroën Garage (Citroen Kunsthal) in Amsterdam. I.s.m. LhGWR wordt daar 'Inertia' opgebouwd.

The 3-channel hommage to dystopian science fiction 'Inertia' is moving up North to the LhGWR gallery in The Hague.

Opening on Saturday, February 21 at LhGWR, Stationsweg 137, The Hague, NL. Just a short walk from the Holland Spoor train station, LhGWR shows 'Inertia' in the main space until April 4th.

'Inertia' is accompanied by a short story, which was published in the Van Stof Tot Asse catalogue and as a hand-made limited edition leparello of which only a few copies are left.

Below is the short story of 'Inertia': it functions as a counterbalance to the apocalyptic view that is expressed in the work itself. While working on a project such as this, I tend to make up stories to help me position myself towards the work. These arise while setting up scenes and such.

INERTIA

“Extraordinary!” the doctor exclaimed as the ship approached. The level of detail became sufficient to distinguish vague coastlines and a bit of elevation. The crew, exhausted by promises and disappointment, didn’t react at all. The doctor turned around to the high-level members, who sat slumped in their custom-made comfortable seats and watched some rerun of a comedy show or tried to find a way to boost their communication signal so they would get access to at least some sort of news feed from back home.

The doctor shifted his gaze to the big screen, which also served as a window that didn’t show much more than a vague contour of another spheroid that seemed barren and empty. “Look,” he said, “it appears to have an atmosphere!”

Two days later, he presented his report to the captain and the first level officers. ‘Officers’ was put a bit too strongly; the first level only consisted of notables and adventurers with enough money and sense of exoticism to have embarked on the mission. None of them ever had performed any duties on this journey. All they did was drink expensive drinks and feel extremely bored.

They complained: “It’ll probably turn out to be another mirage”, and, “We were promised exciting discoveries but all we have found so far are useless pieces of rock, or balls of gas.”

“This is different, there’s actually something here”, the doctor said. He started his carefully constructed presentation by showing images of landmasses, reflections of light on water-like surfaces and an admittedly quite distorted video recording of a probe flying over a desert-like surface.

The doctor talked about chemistry, geology, surface temperatures and estimated mass. He showed diagrams of gravity, explained how much time it would take this new world to rotate around its star, discussed the density of oxygen and of course, signs of life.

“Wait, what?” a first level ‘officer’ said, “There are signs of life down there?” He sat up straight.
“Finally,” the countess of Aaäa replied, while texting a hot message to a well-built crewmember working somewhere around the hyper-thrust engine. She had no idea what his occupation really was.
“It’s probably going to be something cellular again, or a virus or something”, the son of a billionaire entrepreneur said. He softly repeated the word “something” while looking miserably into his empty glass. Shortly after the mission departed, he started wondering what it was that had pissed his father off so much that he had been forced into exile. Was it the fact his mother was a fruitcake, hospitalized for reasons he never found out? Was it his girlfriend – or rather ex-girlfriend, given how long ago he had left. They never seemed to get along, although they both believed themselves to be very sociable and all that.

“No, no,” the doctor explained, “Life at this point seems only to exist on a primitive level, but…” His audience ostentatiously went back to their mobile screens, mumbling things like: “I knew it.” Someone said: “Well, better luck next time.”

“BUT”, the doctor continued, “there are indications of a civilization.”
Several of the officers lifted their heads. “What do you mean, civilization?”
The doctor pointed at some high-resolution stills of the video the probe made: “These structures are clearly man-made. They can’t just be the result of natural causes, wind nor water erosion can produce these types of shapes.” The doctor continued his description and elaborated on a much too advanced level for his listeners to understand. His discussion included an analysis of anomalies in electrical charges and geological versus constructed architectural structures, amongst other things. He also pointed out the extra-atmospheric debris the ship had identified on the radar, however small and insignificant.

“How exhilarating,” the countess of Aaäa said, without a trace of enthusiasm. “So, what does all this this mean?”
“Well,” said the doctor, as he prepared himself for an informative Big Bang. “We’ve found a place where life once thrived, where a technologically advanced civilization was established, which has now disappeared. We can only guess as to the reason why.” He uttered the last sentence with what he hoped to be some sense of suspense.

“So,” he went on, “shall we land?”

For the triannual Van Stof tot Asse in the town of Asse (quite close to Brussels) I'm showing a new video-installation, consisting out of three single screen films. Two of those are continuous loops. The third is a film of about 6 minutes, showing the virtual location of the images in the loops. The project is at this point untitled.

The work(s) has (have) a rather high science fiction level and are in black and white. The two loops are showing oldfashioned glass museum cases, both displaying landscapes.

Denkbaar is de naam waaronder sinds kort mijn toegepaste werk valt: websites, animaties en video (trailers, teasers, motion graphics), grafische, illustratieve en 3D vormgeving en tekstopdrachten. De naam verwijst natuurlijk naar WFH's 'De God Denkbaar, Denkbaar De God'.

Voor eventuele opdrachten (atijd welkom!) kan er een mail gestuurd worden naar info [at] bureaudenkbaar [dot] com. De website, www.bureaudenkbaar.com, is in Wordpress gemaakt. Deze moet hier en daar nog wat worden aangevuld, maar er staan ondertussen natuurlijk ook wat artistieke werken in de steigers dus dit gaat te zijner tijd gebeuren.

Gedachtes bij een videoclip [I]: Immortal - Blashyrkh: Mighty Ravendark

Ooit was het de bedoeling van literair enfant terrible Martijn Benders om een digitaal magazine op te zetten, waarin onderstaande een columnreeks zou schrijven over bepaalde videoclips. Aangezien dit magazine tot dusver nooit verscheen, zal ik trachten de reeks hier te beginnen. Op onregelmatige basis, welteverstaan.

Ze begon aldus:

Onder het motto: "de beste videokunst is zelden in de musea te zien" beschrijft kunstenaar en tekstschrijver Alexandra Crouwers videoclips. Dit komt voort uit een lang aanslepende en tegen obsessief aanschurende liefde voor zowel het schrijven als muziek en het beeld dat daar aan gerelateerd wordt.

Aflevering 1: Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) van Immortal

We vliegen er meteen in: volle gitaren spelen een riff van - ik ken de technische term niet maar het klinkt als - een gemiddelde snelheid, ondersteund door overduidelijke en zeer droog klinkende double bass drums terwijl één van de protagonisten op een rots staat. Een moment later kunnen we deze van dichterbij bewonderen; vooral zijn spookachtige gezichtsbeschildering, omlijst door lang zwart haar, trekt in eerste instantie de aandacht.

'Double bass drums', weet ik van mijn broertje die ervaringsdeskundige is, hoeven niet te bestaan uit twee basdrums (dit is de door de drummer gehanteerde grote trommel, die op zijn kant op de grond staat), maar functioneren meestal door het aanbrengen van een brug naar twee pedalen waar er normaal gezien slechts één aanwezig is. Door dit apparaat kan een enkele voetbeweging in plaats van de gebruikelijke 'boem' ineens een nabootsing van het geluid van donder voortbrengen.

Nu toch een familielid op de proppen komt in deze eerste aflevering moet ik hierbij er aan toevoegen dat deze videoclip mij enige jaren geleden via mijn zusje, onderzoeker aan een instituut in het Noorse Bergen, is toegespeeld. Doch dit terzijde.

De gitaren klinken dan wel vol, maar blijven een merkwaardige ijlheid behouden; er lijken relatief weinig bastonen in te zitten. De artistiek beschilderde protagonist wordt al snel vergezeld van een kloon. Zwarte leren kaplaarzen, een zwarte legging of zeer strak broekje en mouwloze vestjes zijn hun deel. Het is moeilijk te zeggen of ze het koud zouden hebben gehad; het landschap op de achtergrond is overduidelijk Scandinavisch, maar ook daar kan het best aangenaam van temperatuur zijn, weet ik uit ervaring. Er ligt in dit gedeelte in ieder geval geen sneeuw. Misschien was het lente. De kleuren zijn blauwig, koud. Dat lijkt voor een deel te wijten aan de post-productie van deze video. Onze protagonist en zijn metgezel kijken boos naar de camera, naar ons, naar de hals van hun gitaren en naar de prachtige fjorden en meertjes.

WARME SOEP

Sferisch vliegt in slow motion een kraaiachtige door het beeld. Vermoedelijk is dit per ongeluk opgenomen, waarmee ik bedoel dat er geen kraai werd getraind om op een zeker moment door een bepaald camerabereik te vliegen. Uren heeft de crew in de struiken liggen filmen om dit shot te krijgen. Gelukkig hadden hun moeders hen warme soep in thermosflessen meegegeven. Nadat de kraai is verdwenen, worden bij wijze van overgang slow motion shots van de protagonist en zijn kloon getoond en eindigen we met een close-up van het oog van een kraai, waarin een versneld landschap weerspiegeld wordt.

Het landschap speelt duidelijk een grote rol in deze clip, die voornamelijk bestaat uit shots van gitaarspelende leden van de band bovenop rotsen, afgewisseld met close-ups van de kwaad kijkende en geschminkte muzikanten. Hier en daar heeft de editor een nostalgisch filmeffect en wat bliksemschichten aan het beeld toegevoegd.

Na een minuut begint de protagonist aan zijn teksten. Voor deze bespreking zijn ze niet zo van belang, hoewel ik me regelmatig af heb gevraagd wat in vredesnaam "Mighty Ravendark" zou moeten betekenen. Machtig Ravenduister. Het klinkt in ieder geval overtuigend in combinatie met de muziek. Binnen het discours van de hedendaagse poëzie kan ik me voorstellen dat er wat wenkbrauwen zouden worden opgeheven, want gotische pathetiek is binnen alle kunsten niet zo heel erg hip op het moment. We blijven hardnekkig kijken en krijgen een herhaling van de voorgaande visuele thematiek voor de kiezen.

Dit geeft mij enige ruimte om te reflecteren over de esthetiek van de gegeven video. Allereerst is er het landschap, dat ruig, kaal, desolaat en bijna onbewoond lijkt. Hierin worden de hoofdpersonen geplaatst. Dit roept onmiddellijk associaties op met Caspar David Friedrich's werk; de mens is nietig en onbetekenend. In de zeer onnatuurlijke omgeving waarin wij ons in dit deel van Europa bevinden is die sensatie zeldzaam, maar voor veel Scandinaviërs is die confrontatie dagelijkse kost. Een andere, in bepaalde kringen zeer bekende genremuzikant uit die contreien (Gaahl genaamd), vertelde in een televisie-interview dat hij in zijn jeugd slechts één medeleerling op school had, waarmee hij niet eens echt bevriend kon zijn omdat ze te ver uit elkaar woonden om elkaar te bezoeken buiten schooltijd. Hoewel ik alles weet van ingewikkelde sociale verhoudingen tussen schoolkinderen lijkt me zo'n omstandigheid nog een graadje zwaarder om op latere leeftijd van te kunnen normaliseren. Maar ook aan die jeugdige eenzaamheid zit een zekere esthetiek: de mogelijkheid om een vrijheid van fantasie en denken te kunnen ontwikkelen, wars van de rest van de wereld.

Daar komt nog een persoonlijke opvatting bij: er zit een zeker aantrekkelijkheid in langharige, zwart/wit beschilderde mannen die moeilijk kijken. Ik vermoed dat dit in mijn geval iets genetisch iets, waar ik niets aan kan doen. Op vijfjarige leeftijd was ik al een fan van Kiss. Insha'Allah, zullen we maar zeggen.

Inmiddels is de video na wat pathetisch haargewapper, montage-technische bliksemschichten en flitsende beeldwissels met een kraaiachtige aanbeland bij haar hoogtepunt.

De muziek vertraagt, de dubbele basdrum is verdwenen en een sfeervol gitaarsolootje begeleidt het slow motion beeld van de protagonist die met de armen over elkaar en het sluierend haar over zijn gezicht op een rotsje staat te wachten op het volgende shot. Iets later wandelt hij (of zijn kloon) door een dun laagje sneeuw, wat de indruk van een - misschien vroege - lenteachtige namiddag versterkt. Hij lijkt zich om te draaien en zijn leren jas zwaait over een klif alsof het de vleugels van een raaf betrof, jazeker.

AAAAARGH!

De vertrokken mond van de protagonist stoot iets uit, dat wat weg heeft van het geluid wat men bij een tandartsbezoek soms op kan vangen - a sound of disgust, horror and anguish - en in de zin die daarop volgt kan men eindelijk de titel van dit lied onderscheiden. Shots van de protagonist en zijn kloon, die nog steeds met zijn armen over elkaar op actie staat te wachten, wisselen elkaar af. Er wordt nog bozer gekeken en men zet de gitaar-riff weer in.

Eindelijk! Daar zien wij van links uit de verte de kloon zich met wapperende manen en elegante tred over de rotsen in de richting van zijn kameraad haasten! Het is wat uitkijken op die stenen, maar kind van moeder aarde als hij is, brengt hij deze dartele renpartij tot een goed einde. Gebroederlijk spelen beide hoofdrolspelers de laatste maten van dit lied, terwijl hun haar weelderig zwabbert en de nepbliksems hen om de oren slaan. In het laatste shot zien wij de protagonist een buiging maken richting ons, maar ook richting zijn landschap. Een waardig einde!

Nawoord

De term "Blashyrkh" is een uitvinding van twee van de bandleden van Immortal zelf en refereert naar het isolement van het opgroeien in en rond het Noorse Bergen. Nu woont mijn eerder genoemde zusje tijdelijk in Bergen en van haar begrijp ik vooral dat het er verschrikkelijk regenachtig is en dat door de bergen sommige delen van de stad zelden of nooit zonlicht krijgen. Demonaz en Abbath, de respectievelijke bandleden, zien "Blashyrkh" als een oord dat gevuld is met demonen en strijd. Het lied "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)" en de hierbij besproken videoclip stammen uit 1995 en komen van de plaat "Battles of the North". Immortal bestaat overigens als band, na een reeks bijna niet bij te houden bezettingswisselingen, nog steeds.

U mag bij bovenstaande beschrijving verzuchten dat het allemaal wel erg clichématig klinkt, maar u moet daarbij bedenken dat deze mensen - en een aantal van hun landgenoten - dit cliché eigenhandig de wereld in hebben geholpen. Respect daarvoor.

Antarctica: on artistic reverb

In 2001, my master paper for the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam was a bit unconventional in the sense that it was a work of fiction, just like my graduation paper for the Academy for Arts & Design (now AKV St. Joost, Den Bosch). The latter won an award for the best graduation paper of the Academy in 1998, and got printed in an edition of 500 copies.

'Battlestar Antarctica' is, apart from the introduction, a collection of letters I wrote to art historian Tineke Reijnders. These were written from a fictional parallel universe, in which the Northern hemisphere suffered from a rather abrupt ice-age while Antarctica's ice-cap magically melted. Note: this was obviously written years before the disaster movie 'The Day After Tomorrow' got released.

In this parallel reality I've decided to stay in freezing Europe, instead of relocating south to the temperate climate of the Antarctics, as most people did. The letters start out describing my life in an almost deserted, ice and snow covered Holland. In this story, I've moved into the abandoned building of the Boymans Van Beuningen museum. There are numerous problems that had to be tackled: heating, food, fuel and looting gangs. After some time the story evolves into some sort of science-fiction crime-detective. This unfortunately doesn't seem to work out, and the letters start to switch between an analysis of the difficulty of writing the detective-story and the increasingly disrupted plot itself.

The book I made of this paper had some illustrations in it: some of the first Photoshopped images I ever made. One of them is an insert with a map of Antarctica, without the ice-cap. This was also an edition of 10 larger prints, on high-gloss A4 photo paper.

'Battlestar Antarctica' (not a very good title, in hindsight) was also the title and starting point of my graduation project of the Sandberg Institute at Hotel Mariakapel Hoorn. This installation consisted of 9 slide-projections, most of them projected as large as 5 meters high. The slides were a graphic visualisation of the paper, in digital collages. The installation was accompanied by a soundtrack of dripping water and distant airplanes flying over.

The image below is a rather badly composited overview of the space - an old chapel - compiled by scans of photo's.

Shortly after this, I was invited to make a site-specific installation during the theatre-festival 'Boulevard' in Den Bosch (NL). Working further on the same theme I actually made a two-fold installation: the prelude in a room on the ground floor of a former office building and a slide installation in the cellar below it. You could only get into the cellar by moving through the first installation first. The slides were transferred from digital collages, based on photos I made during a mid-winter-trip to central Sweden.

Later that year I used some of the slides for an installation at De Fabriek, Eindhoven.

The theme returned in an installation that also addressed my difficulties with me being originally a painter but evolving into another kind of artist. The documentation of this work seems to have been lost, but the work revolved around a tent, made of stretched canvasses finished with a layer of high gloss orange-red paint.

In another rather unbalanced two-fold installation, 'Kaap>>', made during a residency in 2002 at De Nederlandsche Cacaofabriek (Helmond, NL) the Antarctics already started to dwindle into the background. Only a large wall print of Cape Horn was a vague reminder. The first part of the installation was a kind of set-up for a scéance. Being from the area of Helmond, I used photos of my ancestors in this assembly, next to a number of objects. The second part was more or less a foreboding of my later work with 3D software, which I started to learn a couple of years later. This part consisted out of four slide projections, one of which was an overflow between 2 Kodak carroussel projectors (2 x 80 slides). The slides were abstract: polygon shapes and lens flares, created in the computer.

Antarctica has always been of great interest to me. It's a continent in hybernation, a (literary) blank canvas for my imagination.

Now back to the present. Antarctica has popped up into my work once more; like in my master paper, it's an ice-less Antarctica. Since it would take thousands of years, maybe even up to 10.000, for its ice cap to melt completely, it's safe to assume the work is set into the future, making it a work of science-fiction.

This two-channel video-installation shows a 360º camera pan in a deserted landscape of bare rock with a shade of green, subarctic moss. The higher mountain tops are still covered with some snow; the remnants of the ice cap. In the distance, at see, a large piece of drifting ice shelve is still visible. There's barely any sign of human interference, apart from a shipwreck at the shore. For the rest only flocks of birds cross the landscape.

Base layers have been rendered. This could take up to over 48 hours for 24 seconds of animation, with two computers calculating. Now the compositing begins:

Artwork & Art direction preperations for movie short

Cosmopolitan photographer/screenwriter/director Fleur Boonman ('Portable Life', 2011) is working on several film projects amongst which a movie short that takes place in a psychological space. It still only has (several) working titles. 'Circus Sub Rosa' is one of them. Still in development stage I was asked to design the look of this black and white visual trip. An important part of the film is set in a representation of a world system, based on group reincarnation. Though I don't share the view of reincarnation nor predestination, it's interesting enough to visualise what something like this could look like moviewise.

The film will be less of a conventional movie, but will end up closer to something like Matthew Barney's 'Cremaster' cycle, half made up of a narrative, half of visually stunning hypnotic dream- and nightmarelike sequences. As with most films the pre-, post- and actual production is a long process, taking a lot of patience.

Missing Link at Artspace Flipside, Eindhoven

'Missing Link' was on view from 19.10.2013 until 27.10.2013 - during the Dutch Design Week of Eindhoven - at Artspace Flipside. After a crazy hectic period of building up another exhibition, assisting here and there, collecting works and a whole lot of other activities, the exhibtion 'Missing Link' was completed. In total some 44 works by 14 artists were brought together in a space of about 60m2 and 6 meters high.

Taken into account that budget and time were extremely tight, and the space not exactly a white cube, the exhibtion comes rather close to what I had in mind: something remniscent of a cabinet, altars, or a museum for anthropology. In that sense this exhibition was an experiment: a relatively large amount of works in very different media (video, sculpture, photo, print), connected in an installation-like environment. This immersive environment made quite an impact on the visitors.

OVER DE TENTOONSTELLING

De term ‘missing link’ wordt in de evolutiebiologie gebruikt om een veronderstelde kloof tussen twee soorten aan te geven. Deze notie is binnen de context van de tentoonstelling op verschillende manier van toepassing. De kunstenaars houden zich niet aan begrenzingen en werken veelal in meerdere uiteenlopende media en disciplines.

De grote gemeenschappelijke deler is een welhaast antropologische benadering van hun kunstenaarsschap: de kunstenaars onderzoeken vooral hun eigen wereldbeeld, dat zich nieuwsgierig concentreert op schaduwen in de cultuurhistorie. Ideeën over een naderende apocalyps en een mensenloze aarde, het sculptuur als een geladen object, het beeld als taal en de verscheidenheid van cultuuruitingen sijpelen door de werken die vooral over de beperkingen van het nu heen kijken.

De tentoonstellingsopzet reflecteert deze ondertoon. In tegenstelling tot de gebruikelijke white cube inrichting, zal de opstelling eerder aan een etnografische museum refereren en daarbinnen de parallel tussen een tentoonstellingsruimte en een rituele ruimte zoeken. De ruimte van Artspace Flipside is verduisterd, de verlichting gedempt. De werken - video, print, sculpturen en tekeningen – smelten hierdoor tot een installatie samen.

Binnen de Dutch Design Week legt ‘Missing Link’ een verband tussen de design-wereld, waarin innovatie en nieuwigheden veelal centraal staan, en de oorsprong van het beelden-maken binnen de menselijke culturele evolutie.

‘Missing Link’ zal de première buiten het Verenigd Koninkrijk hebben van het laatste videowerk van de Canadese Kelly Richardson, ‘The Last Frontier’.
