Domestic DON: Testing Tricks and Techniques

I've been trying out some of the homemaker tips I've found on Pinterest as well as in a book I have by the Queen of Clean. Here's how they turned out:

Removing Scratches from Dishes

I did this by using the rough side of a damp sponge to work in some Bar Keepers Friend, which you can pick up at just about any grocery store. Took less than a minute per dish and they looked like new!

Homemade Febreze

I had just run out of Febreze so I thought I'd give this recipe a whirl. Two cups warm water, 1/4 cup fabric softener, 1 tsp baking soda. Pour everything in a spray bottle and shake up. It smelled nice, but I have yet to determine if it has the staying power of Febreze. Need a weekend in Vegas to really test that out!

Mattress Freshener

I'm compulsive about flipping my mattress every quarter and since I was flipping it anyway, I attempted this mattress refresher. I mixed a few drops of essential oil (lavender for me) into a cup of baking soda, then sifted it directly on to the mattress. I have a queen sized bed and needed probably twice as much to really cover the mattress. Letting the powder sit for a few hours, I used the upholstery attachment on my vacuum cleaner to suck it up. The results were inconclusive. The mattress smelled nice, but it didn't smell badly before. Probably the biggest selling point is that lavender is an excellent repellent for dust mites so I can sleep soundly (hoping there were never any there to begin with).

Hard Water Stain Remover

I didn't post a photo of my powder room toilet because who wants to look at hard water stains in a toilet? This one rarely gets used and had some discoloration in the basin. I filled a spray bottle with vinegar, turned the water off in the toilet and flushed several times to drain, and spray it down with a liberal amount of vinegar. I left it to sit for about an hour then brushed it out. There was already a noticeable difference after this step, but I was going for a sparkling throne. I sprinkled the bowl with Borax and let it sit overnight. In the morning I brushed the bowl, turned the water on, and flushed several times. Voila! A pretty potty, a lovely loo.

See that smirk on Jason Sudeikis? It's because he's being photographed with his sex symbol girlfriend. However, there is nothing sexy about a denim maxi dress with peach cardigan. Frumptastic. But then you go and have the least sexy dress in the world exposing pretty much everything north of your belly button. You were like, "Ooh, I like this, it's like all western-inspired and in need of a fringe purse and fringe necklace!" No, that didn't help. Just one huge failure.

Dear Katharine McPhee,

Why do you keep taking opportunities to show off being a PYT with a huge show about to break and wearing the most boring or matronly outfits you can find? I would love this look...on Meryl Streep. Sadz.

Dear Reese Witherspoon,
You are fortunate in that I've seen you work hairstyles with both no bangs and bangs. However, you really shouldn't let your kids cut them for you. Get this trimmed asap because I want to love you again.

Dear Kim Kardashian,

Where would I even begin? How about are you wearing fingerless gloves or did have have a rough incident with a spray tan? Pretty sure it's the latter. And your coat? They are not casting for a remake of The Shaggy Dog. That is just gross.

Dear Salma Hayek,

You are my favorite because you trying to bring back the choker. Not only that, but you wore it with black lace and pulled-back hair, just like a character in an Ann Rice book. You go vampire. I feel like you are an extremely weird person IRL and this look just sort of substantiates my thoughts.

Blake Lively and Jaime King came out to support Jason Wu for Target. I'm not one for Target hysteria, but these pieces look pretty wearable! Then again, they are on extremely pretty people...Will you be buying some?

My love Kate Beckinsale continuing to promote Underworld in Michael Kors (red) and Dior (white). Because Jennifer Hudson has worn SO MUCH Michael Kors lately, every dress I see from him reminds me of her. Probably because she's worn them all.

I love Emmy Rossum, she comes off as so approachable and girl next door. I don't know about you but hot pink is overtaking my closet! I need to stop buying it, but it's everywhere and looks amazing on everyone!

And then there's the return of Miss Thing, looking very Brit Brit in her best days here. So excited for new music from Carrie Underwood!!

Paris Shows: Cameron, Jessica, Olivia

Some of the fashion set jetted over to Paris to catch the Chanel and Armani shows, including Diane Kruger, Cameron Diaz (who made her hair white and why), Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Chastain, and Olivia Palermo (with one solid tan). What is with the recent trend in boob jobs in Hollywood? Kate Hudson, Nicole Richie, and now Cameron Diaz are all sporting new tatas.

And I have another question. How come Lauren Conrad, who is a fashion designer of sorts, never attends any fashion shows and rarely wears any high fashion herself? Perplexing me...

Kardashian Catch-Up

Kim Kardashian did hosting duties with Kelly Ripa in a red lace L'Wren Scott dress. She left NYC in ripped jeans and a gross white fur coat.

Not a fan of her leather Versace for H&M trench or her casual look while Chanel shopping. Honestly, this second outfit is so not her. Even though it's all brand name (Helmut Lang sweater, Jet Jeans, House of Harlow headpiece - shudder), it is so not like her perfectly tailored and put together style. I think she's making some shifts in her look; I know she's worked with some new stylists as of late.

Khloe Kardashian has landed a new job hosting a one hour, commercial free radio show on air at noon in Dallas. She'll have the job during her husband's basketball season in town. She has denied numerous reports about her lately, including that Robert Kardashian is not her father and that she is starting fertility treatments.

Kourtney Kardashian returns to LA with Scott and Mason in tow. I like Kourtney more and more this season, I forget how different she is from Kim in terms of relatability.

The show is winding down and yes, I still feel like Kris is pretty blindsided by what is about to happen, but it also seems like he, being the annoying beast he is, is not reading any of the very obvious signs. I think he may have looked at this season of the show as something they had to get through, then they could figure out their lives as he seems to be out of the house as much as possible. Either way, I see why Kim is incredibly relieved to have this season coming to a close and I think Khloe & Lamar will be a much more light-hearted show for those of you who feed into the Kardashian machine like me.

Bump Watch: KCav, Alessandra, Hilary

Alessandra Ambrosio walked the runway not looking at all pregnant. Of course this is the girl who walked the Victoria's Secret runway in November in the first trimester of her pregnancy and we all saw how amazing she looked then.

Hilary Duff, 24, has gone for darker locks and is the cutest little baby bumper around. I'm really happy for them, they seem like a great couple.

And KCav, 25, comes out of nowhere to announce she's expecting a baby with fiance Jay Cutler. I predict they tie the knot before the baby is here.

Cafe Gratitude is a favorite of mine in Hollywood, great for healthy grubs and making you feel like an idiot while ordering. Entrees have names like "I am comforted" and the "I am liberated". A ton of celebrities are catching on to this spot, including Anne Hathaway who ate their yesterday and Mindy Kaling who tweeted her love for it today. Yippies abound her in La La Land! (Yippies = yuppie hippies.) Zoe Saldana gets her grub on in Beverly Hills.

Ashley Tisdale must be averse to styling her own hair. I swear she is at Andy LeCompte or Byron and Tracy on the regular. Fellow blondie January Jones leaves the gym looking pretty fresh. I want to see that baby! As for my gym attending goal, this morning I set my alarm, got dressed for the gym, then got back in bed with my dog. Baby steps people, baby steps.

Kate Beckinsale and Lauren Conrad each have like 10 looks, but they are such great looks I love them so. Especially Kate. Look at her outfit here. Gorg ombre hair, awesome Stella McCartney tuxedo jacket, pleather leggings to show off her hard work, and hot Fendi platforms. One chic mama, no? I still mourn the amazing, perfectly tailored Theory tuxedo jacket I left at a friend's one NYE that she promptly donated during a resolutionary cleaning spree. Le sigh.

Lauren ran errands in LA yesterday - not at Kate Somerville, damn her - in a summery sundress and her favorite Miu Miu sandals and Chloe bag that she toted all last summer. She's ready for warm weather. Sorry, it's not happening yet.

I actually went to put Khloe's Giuseppe Zanotti heels in my shopping cart when I got the dreaded sold out sign. Aren't they fabulous? She's totally overshadowing Kim here and I love it!

Jennifer Hudson has had some kind help along the way as she promotes her book. Her pretty pink dress is my favorite. How curvy and tiny does she look in the Elizabeth and James dress? I want! Sans sidebraid though. And her YSL heels take centerstage over her simple LBD. Looking good and proud you are out of the Herve dresses darling!

I'm not above handing out props when they are due and believe me, these ladies need all the encouragement we can give when they actually get it right. Just look at LiLo wearing court appropriate clothing to her favorite hangout - court! Conservative, muted colors, business trousers; I guess practice makes perfect, huh Lindz? And check out Jessica Simpson, all dressed up for dinner out an not a whiff of cleavage in sight! She also opted not to cover her growing baby bod in chunky, heavy fabrics and layers, which did not in fact camouflage the fact that nobody believes she's months from her due date.

I could just cry with pride. Look at my quirky little Kiki, all dressed up for a Rodarte dinner looking pretty as can be. You've finally graduated, my dear.

Miss Hudgens, thank you. One day off the promo trail and you found something that didn't make me gag to wear out shopping. You look lovely. Keep it up, I beg of you.

This is true beauty. Rachel McAdams is what I aspire to pull off on a great day. This coat, that adorable, A line dress, those gorgeous nude, ruffled heeled Brian Atwoods. Perfection in the UK.

Jessica Alba is busy diving into her next venture-well really her husband's new day job-of Honest.com, a website that delivers organic baby goods monthly. Basically cashing in on the Birchbox/Shoedazzle method, which is a pretty smart venture. No surprise she's popping color with her wardrobe by Brad. He's really pushing it with these outfits, though. Those pink heels are no bueno and the green coat, by Doo.Ri, is way too bananas with an orange top and floral jeans.

Look how young and fab Lea Michele looks! Maybe she is the rare exception who should not work with a stylist? Love her shaggy, soft Brochu Walker heavy cardi combined with sexy OTK boots, great contrast. Pippa Middleton goes head to toe gray for a day at work.

DON's Deal: Berfday Girl

So I kind of love my birthday.

And by the end of today, my Twitter friends will be like

But until then...I have lunch with my work bestie, an afternoon at Kate Somerville where I expect Lauren Conrad, Brit Brit, or somebody else amazing to be sitting in the waiting room when I arrive, and dinner with the sissy and friends. Saturday will be my LA birthday party because we cannot get enough celebrating in over here.

And I shall look just like this when I walk in.
I hope this year brings me to new cities, at least one a year is my goal.

New fabulous friends and more face time with my current lovelies.

A passion for exercise and the healthy bod that goes with it.

Final GG Thoughts: Alba, Victoria, SMG, Michelle

Final thoughts on the globes popping up here. Jessica Alba is gorgeous in pretty much anything she puts on. When you are prettier than the dress you are wearing, there was something a hair off. Here, I'd say it was the dress color because the Gucci dress itself is brilliant, but you can't help but land your eye on her rocking tan (been using Carrie Underwood's secret leg shimmer juice, I see), great earrings, and pretty hair. Loved Michelle Williams in Jason Wu. Why she is still sporting this brassy hair color is confusing me and this headband trend...what is it? Headbands on 30+ woman in formal gowns makes no sense at all. There's a time and place for headbands and it's not at an awards show.

Nicole Kidman often chooses looks that make her look severe. This dress, while by no means romantic or flowy, is one of her best choices in recent history. The color is drab, but the cut and accents, plus the loose, easy hair, make her look sexy in a way I never think she looks.

Can you please tell me what you think about this? I can't form words around SMG's look; I go back and forth with what I think. Nevermind, I think I have it. This look is more CMAs than Golden Globes. It takes me back to her being a soap actress as well. It's not that it's not pretty...I just think something is really off; wrong girl, wrong event, and WRONG BLUE EYE SHADOW.

And a quick note to showcase some really pretty short dress options. Victoria Justice is high on my who to watch list and looks amazing in Amen. Kate Walsh never misses an opportunity to show off her killer legs. This dress embraces the volume and drama of the 80's theme in a manageable way.

A fun, flirty Etro dress on Malin Akerman is post-party appropriate.

The accessories and easy hair make the look.

And nothing about Meryl Streep because she's effing perfect no matter what lunacy of a dress gets the pleasure of being near her.

Missed Opportunities

Here's where we dive into the been-there-done-that, the too much of a trend, and the baby grandma trend. Let's start with my new favorite horror, baby grandmas.

Kelly Osbourne and Jessica Biel both dug around in their gam-gam's attic for something pretty to wear. Kelly's legit looks like something that sits in your laundromat/tailor's window on display for 5 decades so you know what they do inside in case you can't read. My guess is Jessica's grandmother was a knockout bride in this look. Maybe if she wore some makeup and brushed her hair I could have been proud of her.

You left your rollers in too long, paired them with oversized pearls and a belted turtleneck dress. All of this screams matronly when you should be showing us hot, fresh young actress. Jennifer Morrison, not the night to actually try to wear that bridesmaid dress one more time, complete with the gifted Stella and Dot flower earrings.

Oh dear God, baby Kiki alert. I know you want to be quirky like Zooey Deschanel, but you are just a hot mess. Side pony, belted bow dress in white with ruffle details, AND WHITE SHOES?! Blech.

I will never understand this dress because I'm consumed with her constipated poses. Understated, please, just once don't try to be the biggest look in the room.

Alright, Diane Lane and Julie Bowen look beautiful, but come on girls, quit it with the nudes.

Nudes with a turquoise statement necklace? Heidi, you are a model, you have no excuses for such a tired trick. I almost wanted to cry at Katharine McPhee's incredibly dull, failure of a dress on the brink of possible stardom. Washed out color, mullet cut with ruffles at a midi length, accessories that blend right into the background along with her. MISSED OPPORTUNITY.

And in the we've totally seen this before category:

Mila knows she messed up and is displeased. Reese Witherspoon, honestly, how many sweetheart structured Zac Posen gowns can a girl wear? It's pretty, but it was the first 5 times, too.

"What do you mean Cameron Diaz already went for this look?" Great color on her, flawed execution.

Better Banish that Bacne: Claire, Zooey, NicRic, and Jaime

Claire Danes beats out Nicole Richie, Jaime King, and Zooey Deschanel for best back display by a mile. She's wearing J. Mendel.

Yikes, the bare back is a little scary when you are so very thin. But Jaime's hair and makeup look perfect. I mean, pairing braids with a headband and not looking 6 is hard work! Dress is Valentino.

This Julien MacDonald did not work for me at all.

Oh so retro in Prada.

Total Day Old News: Golden Globe Fashion

Thank you for patiently waiting on GG chit chat. My weekend at home was everything I wanted it to be. Thanks to all my fab friends for celebrating my birthday early with me and for a lifetime supply of champagne. Huge thanks to my parents who made about 20 different appetizers, my favorite cupcakes, and a very well stocked bar. My actual birthday is tomorrow and I'll be celebrating with the SoCal team on Saturday. My birthday is basically a traveling festival.

I see that some celebs did not get my note on no more nudes, while plenty of others listened to "back is the new accessory". I am very disturbed by the baby grandma trend that we will dive into, but first my pretty pretty princesses.

You will be oh so surprised that my favorite dress was Kate Beckinsale in Cavalli. She's just too pretty and fem not too love.

Zac Posen perfection, plus that oh so trendy exposed back, on Emma Roberts. Holy crap, she's even authentically smiling! Save this photo!!

Natch. My girl Emma Stone in Lanvin. She's showing off what was a huge trend this year - color-coordinating eye shadow. She pulled it off without looking like a big bruise.

Ugh, nude, but done so well. Sarah Hyland in Dolce.

There was a lot of 80's style volume happening and the best example of it done well was the ever-lovely Julianne Moore in Chanel.

If you put a bag over her face (I'm sorry, I can't handle all this plastic surgery yet, she looks so pinched), I really loved Kim's Bruce Oldfield gown.

A surprise major wow for me came in the form of Laura Dern. Her Andrew Gn dress was just stunning. It showed off her slim silhouette and twinkled with every step she took.

Another great example of a dress that works only on the right person. Dark, gothic, glam, it's Evan Rachel Wood to a T. Looks like a spider, lizard, and raven had a baby dress.

Best use of yellow for Paula Patton, who finally finds a winner in Monique Lhuillier.

More heavy metal and fantastic hair on Salma Hayek in Gucci.

There's plenty more that I really liked (even barf Angelina really wowed me) and lots who deserved to be best dressed but for a really stupid head accessory, however these are really stand out examples.

I know you watch Revenge, even my mother does, but are you friends with Ashley Madekwe yet? My vote for best wardrobe on the show, which has some stiff competition, Ashley is also a rock star at style in real life. She's been fashion blogging for awhile now and, unlike many other fashion bloggers, I would wear every piece of what she puts together almost all the time.

A little edgy but never unapproachable, her style is so very young Hollywood without being immature. At 30, she's made a name for herself in her native UK with Secret Life of a Call Girl and tried her hand at a few shows here before making it big with Revenge.

Besides being gorgeous, having a killer sense of style, and an accent I would kill for, she seems extremely down to earth, frequently answering fan questions on Twitter and her blog. She also wears a lot of afforable pieces, mostly by TopShop, Asos, and Zara.

Critics Choice Awards Fashion: Diane, Emma, Kiki, Michelle

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Diane Kruger stood as queen of the Critics Choice Movie Awards last night in a sea of great dresses. Grey and yellow Prada with the prettiest lipstick I've ever seen on her. She's a total knockout.

More good things in green from Emma Stone, seen in Jason Wu last night.

Evan Rachel Wood is always well dressed and her Valentino is no exception. Her hair is bugging, but the lovely combination of detailed gown meets relaxed maxi dress wins me over.

Kiki in Dior, so very her down to her facial expression. I'm all for celebs wearing stuff I'd not wear myself as long as it works with their style and isn't just straight up Leighton Meester style crazy. This works.

What is with this horrible hair color and weird facial expressions?!? Because this Chanel dress is the second best look of the night.

Love Charlize Theron in Alaia. This dress has the best detailing without being so loud. Charlize already stands out with her height and looks, this dress suites her to a T.

Elizabeth Olsen is one of us who sadly cannot wear yellow without looking sickly. Her Pucci dress is pretty, though it would look even better in short or no sleeves - less dated.

Shailene Woodley of Secret Life of an American Teenager in a sleek Calvin Klein. I recently saw her at vegan restaurant in Hollywood with her extremely granola friends. She had a heavy crunch factor going on, then got up to go to the bathroom, and returned Hollywood'd out. Must of had an event to hit up, but it was so random!

DON's Deal: Building a Better Me

Rather than reiterating the resolution idea, my series is going to revolve around building a better me. I last talked about janky nails in an effort to dig deep, but now I'm going to talk about exercise. Or rather lack thereof. My nails, by the way, have been painted ever since that post, although I have to do them about every other day since they chip so much. Still working on technique and longevity!

When I found out I was cancer-free last summer after three years and two rounds of it, I promised myself I would work hard to value my health and treat my body, well queso but true, as a temple. Easier said than done.

After years of lethargy, I found it wasn't easy to snap out if it and get going. I still would take a nap every day if I could and usually log about 10 hours of sleep a night. Silly as it sounds, Cholula was a huge impetus for getting me up. It was a steady progression from jumping on the bed to cuddle, nudges, kisses, pawing in the face, and eventual whining that would wake me up even after that longest of nights out at the same time every morning. Tamale, on the other hand, looks at me with the disdain of a teenager when I try to get her up for the dog park. As soon as I start brushing my teeth, she takes over my warm spot on the bed and beckons me to come lay back down.

So ladylike...

In order to make it to the gym, I need to either be fully prepared the night before and deposit Tally at daycare as they open their doors at 7 am or squeeze in a workout before taking her to the dog park at 6:45. You see why I usually sleep in right? Why don't I run? Don't you remember, I'm made of glass and am far too delicate for such activity. That reminds me, I have an outstanding x-ray referral from falling over while walking my dog. WALKING. Total klutz.

So my goal for the upcoming weeks is to make time, three days a week, to get to the gym before work. It will be horrible and require too much planning, but to deny myself the value of exercise after the blessing of health would be the most selfish thing I could imagine.

People's Choice 2012 Fashion: Got Your Back

The back was the body part to show off last night. Julianne Hough gave it a go in Kaufman Franco. She looks very Dancing with the Stars here.

Lea Michele went with a flapper-inspired Marchesa. Very out of her comfort zone.

And I just knew this had to be Jenny Packham. She and Vanessa Hudgens need to never work together again.

Great use of color all over the place and some really cool dresses last night. Ginnifer Goodwin in hot pink Roksanda Ilincic and Jennifer Morrison in an Oscar de la Renta I could so see on January Jones.

Allyson Hannigan looked fantastic in an Alice and Olivia dress. Great choice for her mini baby bump.

Kristen Bell chose a Valentino with another emerging trend of leather incorporated into your dress. Her makeup and hair are a little too causal for such a dress, but she's so pretty I can't really fault her.

Love the shoes.

Demi Lovato is always over-done and pageanty to me. Even in my favorite designer, Marchesa, she didn't hit the mark.

Her Issa performance dress was much more to my liking, though I loathe red heels with red dresses.

Cobie Smulders never quite get it right, but this was so close. Great hair, makeup, accessories, lovely little Reem Acra first perfected by Reese Witherspoon, and some lame shoes.

Nina Dobrev is really on a girly kick. Her Elie Saab dress is nice, but a little mature and conservative for the event, especially with such a formal bag and such boring heels. She looks like she's going to a baptism.

Love Ashley Greene's vampy DKNY. If Jessica Alba hadn't wore something so similar on Monday, she might have made best dressed.

What is with this old lady hair Kelly? The dress works for you though, well done.

I found a lot more to love than to hate on the red carpet last night; what a relief! And guess what is finally gone? The nudes! We are back into color and I'm thrilled to see it. Here are my top 5 picks in no particular order:

Jennifer Lawrence in Victor and Rolf. She's working hard to stay one of the most watched celebs of awards season and this feminine, structured, sexy cocktail dress fit the bill.

Elisha Cuthbert in Vawk, a Canadian brand known for sharp tailoring and girly looks. This dress is equal parts glamour and rock 'n roll, perfectly reflected in her dark nails and light, easy hair-do.

She did me proud. Emma Stone knows when a gown isn't required and a pop of color is. Her green and black Gucci suit is perfectly proportioned and green is so her color. She has been in lots of muted tones lately and she just shines in this. Hope to see green blazers making the rounds this Spring.

Pretty little Lucy Hale wowed in a cut-out Cengiz Abazoglu dress. It is interesting without being over the top, creative without overpowering her petite frame. Easy hair and makeup let the dress do all the talking.

Miley Cyrus in David Koma. She may make questionable day-to-day style choices, but her red carpet looks are typically eye-catching. I love that this dress has playful accents, sexy elements, and a mature length and fabric choice.

Runner-up was Kaley Cuoco who wore a pretty Badgley Mischka. Even though nude is played out, the lines on this dress and floral details are extremely flattering. As always, her hair and makeup are terrible. I know she hates doing both, but get over it and hire a pro.
