David Barnes is chairman of the City of Newport Business Club. For full story see page 8 of Business Update July 5, 2011

He is also PR and publicity officer for the club.

CONBC was set up in 2004 with an aim to bring together business from Newport.
The club presents four early evening events per year which are held at the Holiday Inn, Newport, at The Coldra. The format of the events involves networking, a choice of delicious meal, a speaker (Eddie Large was a big hit) and aims to be wrapped up by 8.30pm – although people are welcome to carry on networking into the night.

SWCC has two Chamber Councils – one to represent the Chamber’s members in Newport and the
former county of Gwent and the other to represent businesses in and around Cardiff.

The Councils meet on a bi-monthly basis, where they will discuss the main issues affecting businesses throughout the South East Wales region and how these might be tackled through the Chamber’s activities.  The Councils will provide a channel through which Chamber members can raise any issues, concerns or ideas; helping to shape the Chamber’s policy development and service offering to ensure that it always remains relevant to the needs of the local business community.

David worked in newspapers for 20 years, latterly as business editor of the South Wales
Argus – the evening newspaper for Gwent.

He moved into PR in 2000 taking up a post with a Cardiff-based agency initially as an account manager but soon being promoted to account director. While at the agency he worked on a number of accounts for a range of clients including the Welsh Assembly Government,
Education and Learning Wales (ELWA) and Department for Education, Children and Lifelong Learning (DECELLS), the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education Cymru (NIACE Dysgu Cymru), Engineering Employers Federation Wales (EEF Cymru), the South Wales
Contact Centre Forum Ltd, Sigma 3 Kitchens, and the Welsh Development Agency/Department for Enterprise Information and Networks (DEIN) to name but a few…

David is keen on football and he managed his eldest son’s football team for five years up to
under 16 – a ‘job’ he describes as the most challenging he has ever done!

David also enjoys gardening and has a passion for classic cars – in particular Standards and Triumphs. He used to own a 1958 Standard 10 and his dream car is a 1951 Standard Vanguard Phase 1A or a 1966 TR4A.
