Last night, the second round of the 2014 World Matchplay got started with a bit of a bang, as Dave Chisnall and Andy Hamilton put on a great show, but then things went downhill as Richie Burnett failed to turn up and was demolished by James Wade. The same thing happened to Ian White as Michael van Gerwen steamrollered him. And then we saw the strangest thing all week as Barney changed darts before the match, then went back to his old darts halfway through. It was one bad decision after another for the Dutchman in his defeat to Simon Whitlock.

Monday night's darts action was the best session on darts on Sky Sports for quite some time. We had a great start with Stephen Bunting beating Peter Wright - the averages might not have been great, but it was quality action. Then we saw Mervyn King find his A-game and average over 100 in his defeat of Kim Huybrechts. Adrian Lewis got the first round's only whitewash, as he destroyed Andrew Gilding. Then we finished off with another Winter Gardens classic with Gary Anderson seeing off Jamie Caven.

The 2014 World Matchplay started off with more of a whimper than a bang for the fans last night, with some distinctly average performances from the players, most notably Michael van Gerwen's sloppy doubling. - Terry Jenkins to beat Ian White: 2 units @ 11/10
- Highest checkout in Whitlock vs Painter match over 125.5: 4 units @ 9/10

We're finally back with some REAL PDC darts action, after the money-making venture known as the World Cup of Darts. The Premier League and UK Open feel like an eternity ago, but now the 2014 World Matchplay is here, and it's one of the best events of the year. It's essentially the best of the best, and there are a lot of interesting matches coming up in the first round, not least Stephen Bunting returning to the TV stage against Peter Wright. There are, of course, a lot of other matches that capture the imagination, but Bunting's going to be getting a lot of column inches.

Michael van Gerwen heads the field, but he's going to be pushed all the way, as a lot of the field are hitting form at the right time - we have a resurgent Simon Whitlock and James Wade, Jamie Caven is picking up big wins and Gary Anderson is looking dangerous. Plus, the World Matchplay tends to throw up some big shocks- Blackpool can be unforgiving to some players and can be a great place for others.

Tonight we have four matches, with Ian White and Terry Jenkins starting us off, then Simon Whitlock will face Kevin Painter. Bookies' favourite Michael van Gerwen is up next against Steve Beaton, and the night is capped off by James Wade and Andy Smith.

Michael van Gerwen, the defending champion, will take on Gary Anderson in one semi-final, while Phil Taylor faces his old adversary, Raymond van Barneveld, in the night's other semi-final. The two winners will then face-off in one final contest to crown the 2014 Premier League Darts Champion. In between all of that, we have the PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship Final between two great prospects - Keegan Brown and Rowby-John Rodriguez.

Premier League Darts 2014 – Week 15

It's the last week of the regular Premier League Darts season, and we have three men competing for two spots in the play-offs. Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson currently occupy the last two spots, with Peter Wright sitting one point adrift in fifth. The long and short of it is - Taylor and Anderson need a win to guarantee their place, and if either draws or loses, the door is open for Wright, who might only need a draw, depending on other results. Taylor faces Robert Thornton, Anderson takes on Raymond van Barneveld and Wright has the unenviable task of facing Michael van Gerwen. For both Dutchmen, the worst that could happen is they drop down a place or two, but their play-off spots are secure. The night's other game sees Dave Chisnall and Adrian Lewis, with both men's spots in the Premier League secure - Chisnall finishes 7th, Lewis 6th.

This is the first week with only four matches on the card, and it's a great line-up at the Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle, which, as an aside, if my favourite city in the Premier League Darts season. Tonight, Gary Anderson will face Dave Chisnall with the Scotsman needing a positive result to keep his play-off hopes alive. Adrian Lewis plays Robert Thornton in a battle of the play-off also-rans. Peter Wright has the unenviable job of facing Phil Taylor while needing a win to keep his play-off hopes well and truly alive - Taylor needs a win to secure his play-off spot. The other match of the evening is the battle between first and second - MvG vs RvB.
