Head Keeper Mike Downman gives the
good news to the Meerkats

We are pleased to announce that as of 16th November DZP is now a full member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA).

Right from the very start, achieving full BIAZA membership has been a crucial goal in the long journey towards establishing Dartmoor Zoological Park as a fully functional member of the wider zoological community.

Following three years of provisional membership status, we are thrilled to have achieved our goal of full membership.

Full BIAZA membership is recognition that we:

inspire people to help conserve the natural world

participate in effective, co-operative conservation programmes

deliver the highest quality environmental education, training and research

achieve the highest standards of animal care and welfare

Over the last three years we have benefited greatly from the support of BIAZA and other established members. In particular, our good friends at Newquay Zoo have always been on hand to offer help, guidance and advice. We are extremely grateful for their generous support and friendship.

<georss:box>50.39325538516994 -4.018077791992187 50.41349538516994 -3.9785957919921877</georss:box>

High Impact Award for our Education Team

Education Officer, Amy Collie with Curator Collin Northcott
and Presentation Supervisor, Adam Cook

Our education team received some well deserved recognition this week when the organisers of Global Entrepreneurship Week awarded "High Impact Status" to our innovative Enterprise Challenge.

Organised by Youth Business International, Global Entrepreneurship Week celebrates entrepreneurship as a force for good through a wide range of activities. Since its inception, it has spread to 115
countries, with nearly 24,000 organisations planning more than 37,000
activities. In 2010 over 207,200 people attended 2,577 events, run by 983 organisations as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week in the UK alone.

Their "High Impact Badge of Honour" is granted only to those activities which meet a range of criteria demonstrating the contribution the activity makes to the aims of the project.

Launched earlier this year, the DZP Enterprise Challenge is a unique activity developed by DZP Education Officer, Amy Collie. Designed to meet and exceed a range of educational goals in a challenging and engaging manner, it sees small teams of school children assuming the role of a Zoo Development Team for an entire day.

"We're very proud of the Enterprise Challenge," explains Amy. "It involves every department at the zoo from animal care through maintenance to marketing and customer service. It's a real crash-course in the demands of running a modern zoo."

The students' task, often in competition with teams from other schools, is to add a new species to the DZP animal collection. To complete the challenge, students must face and overcome a range of real-world development problems whilst keeping to a strict budget.

At the end of the day the teams are required to present their plans to a panel of professional judges which includes Benjamin Mee, owner of DZP.

"The feedback we get from students and staff is amazing," says Amy.
"We've even run enterprise days as team-building exercises for teachers
and university lecturers. They find it just as challenging and enjoyable as the kids."

The DZP Enterprise Challenge is just one of a number of recent developments within the zoo's education department which have captured the imagination and support of local educators. The new Extended Diploma in Animal Management, delivered in partnership with Bicton College, is now well under way with new students already expressing an interest in enrolling next year.

The fascinating Dissection Theatre, part of the Dartmoor Hill Pony conservation project, is also now very well established and attracting interest from educational establishments throughout the country.

The Enterprise Challenge is proving particularly popular with secondary school
teachers who recognise that it exceeds the specified National Curriculum
learning objectives for Economic Wellbeing
and Financial Capability. It also gives higher ability students the
opportunity
to demonstrate and develop skills in teamwork, assessing needs,
understanding risk,
finance management and enterprise.

"We've known for quite some time now that the Enterprise Challenge was something special," explains DZP operations manager, George Hyde. "The whole team here have worked really hard to produce something of real value and this award shows that we achieved exactly that."

Coming out on Top

Everyone had a hand in promoting the vote

Earlier this year we found ourselves in the running for Eden TV's Top Wildlife Attraction 2011. "Why not?" we thought.

Then we saw the competition; Paignton Zoo, Flamingo Land, Isle of Wight Zoo, Woburn Safari Park, not to mention last year's run-away winners, Knowsley Safari Park. All in all, there were 20 well established attractions with decades of experiences and regular visitor numbers well in excess of our own. Images of David and Goliath came to mind.

Understandably, this gave us pause for thought.

Undaunted we soldiered on. The voting cards and promotional posters arrived and we got to work making sure that our visitors knew we were depending on their support to avoid total embarrassment at the hands of the country's top attractions.

Whilst we were very much encouraged by the enthusiastic support we received from our visitors, we didn't dare to think that we were in with a chance of winning. The mathematics were hard to ignore; even if a large percentage of our visitors chose to honour us with their vote, the sheer numbers of visitors to the other attractions would surely dwarf our own modest contribution.

Getting up-dates from the organisers of the event on how we were progressing wasn't easy. However, we quickly began to realise that, to borrow a well-worn cliche, winning wasn't everything. Once given the opportunity to express their support, the feedback we were getting from our visitors was extremely encouraging.

The majority of this feedback came via our newly established and undeniably fantastic team of (mostly volunteer) presenters, whilst hard at work on their customer engagement duties. This literally entails getting one-to-one with visitors talking about the animal collection, our education and conservation efforts and gathering feedback on their experience.

Social media played an important role. Our Facebook page and profile along with our Twitter account
were put to good use directing supporters to the on-line voting
facility, but again our impressive following in this realm is still very
modest by comparison to some of the other attractions.

The large pile in the centre is the DZP vote

It wasn't until about half way through the summer holiday that we received the incredible news that we might actually be in with a chance when we received this photograph from the offices of the organisers, Mediator Ltd. It's from the desk of the poor person counting the votes:

It was proof positive that the competition had become a two horse race and, astonishingly, we were one of them.

As encouraging as this news was, we didn't let it go to our heads. There was still lots of time left before the closing date for votes and those unavoidable visitor numbers just wouldn't go away; surely the likes of Woburn Safari Park and Paignton Zoo would streak past us before the finish.

Towards the end of the summer holidays our visitors continued to provide lots of encouragement and our followers in the various social media were vocal in their support among their social networks. We even reached a stage when we were rapidly running out of voting cards at the zoo, such was the demand. And no amount of pleading with the organisers would convince them to replenish.

Then came the results.

It seems that we had seriously underestimated the power of our visitors. The groundswell of enthusiastic support had resulted in Dartmoor Zoo taking over 27 per cent of the entire vote placing us in a very comfortable first ahead of The Monkey Sanctuary with our friends at Paignton Zoo coming in third.

This wonderful news is still sinking in around here. It really is very heartwarming and quite humbling to see that the genuine support among our fairly modest visit numbers is sufficient to overwhelm that of our most serious competitors.

The staff and volunteers at DZP work extremely hard to ensure that the visitor experience is the best it can possibly be and this wonderful show of support demonstrates that for many, that's exactly what they've had.

We'd like to thank all our supporters for making this possible and we look forward to working even harder to live up to the title of, Top Wildlife Attraction 2011.

The ever curious ostrich

Over the past year, our African Savannah Exhibit has come on in leaps and bounds. A great deal of work and planning went into moving animals around within the collection, transferring some to other collections and welcoming new arrivals.

The end result is a spacious exhibit which now includes three ostrich, eight guinea fowl, three waterbuck and 11 lechwe antelope (which includes two spring babies). Future additions on the wish-list include zebra and giraffe.

Unfortunately, many of these developments are not immediately obvious to the visitor. Whilst the guinea fowl are easy to spot and the ostrich are very visible thanks to their seemingly tireless curiosity, the lechwe and waterbuck tend to keep their distance. This is largely because the lechwe come from a safari park background where close proximity to pedestrians is pretty rare. And, being the more recent addition, the waterbuck tend take their lead from the lechwe.

Whilst they have become increasingly brave over the months, often seen in the lower reaches of their expansive enclosure, with such a large open space they are still at quite a distance.

So, if Mohamed won’t go to the mountain...

Earlier this year, Ocean Mini of Plymouth teamed up with DZP and provided us with three minis from their range of five to meet our increasingly diverse transport needs. Thanks to our good friends at Alphabet Signs in Plymouth, you may well have spotted these distinctive vehicles out and about as we conduct education outreach visits, transport small animals and generally get on with the day-to-day business of the zoo around the region.

One of the vehicles is a four-wheel drive Mini Countryman. Picked for purpose, this versatile machine now enables us to conduct limited ‘mini safaris’ around the African Savannah Exhibit.

Over the past few months our curator, Colin has been ensuring that the safaris are safe for the public and the animals by taking the Countryman on slow trips around the exhibit, gradually spending more time and getting closer to the animals on each visit.

“It’s very important to ensure that the animals are happy with the vehicle,” explains Colin. “Being prey animals, they are constantly on the look-out for potential threats. The appearance of anything novel in their environment will put the whole herd on high alert until they can satisfy themselves that there is no threat.”

The main objective of this period of acclimatisation is to minimise the possibility of the animals becoming panicked. “The lechwe and waterbuck are very strong and very fast,” says Colin. “If they were to become spooked then they could hurt themselves hitting the perimeter fences.”

The task of driving a vehicle around an animal enclosure also entails a great deal of expertise. Speed must be kept low and constant and the driver must be fully familiar with the behavioural traits of the animals, able to spot any signs of unease long before they become problematic.

There are also hidden dangers. “Although the enclosure itself is very open and spacious,” says Colin. “There are lots of places where small animals, particularly newborns, may be hidden from view. A young antelope will remain perfectly still and hidden until the last possible moment and we wouldn’t want that to be too late.”

Trials of the Mini Safari have gone well so far and we’ll be making announcements about when these will be available to members of the public.

Presentation Team Supervisor, Adam.
(Not at his best)

Of course, nothing could be further from the truth; babies are born, new arrivals appear, enclosures get built... all the stuff you'd expect. We also have a whole new Presentation Team led by our new Supervisor, Adam wowing the general public with talks, animal feeds and activities for the kids.

Our new Education Officer, Amy is rewriting the book on zoo education coming up with a fantastic programme covering the whole curriculum. We've even built a new Education Centre where we'll be delivering a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management with Bicton College. And once that's underway we'll get cracking on a new reptile house.

And then of course there's We Bought a Zoo - the book and soon-to-be Hollywood movie starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johannson. To be honest it's difficult to know what to say about that because it all still seems a bit unreal. It's currently in post-production where director, Cameron Crowe is taking care of the finishing touches, not least of which is the soundtrack which like all Crowe movies promises to be a real gem in itself.

So, the reality is that so much happens here it's hard to find the time to write about it. Sometimes the most we can manage is a quick tweet or a photo and a quick status up-date on facebook. So, we were thinking - maybe we should just give ourselves a bit of a kick and make time to let you all know what's going on as and when it happens.

To get things rolling it would be great to know who's out there listening. The traffic stats for this blog are very modest at the moment, but enough to show that we do have some visitors. If you'd like to see more from this blog please let us know in the comments below. Just let us know what you want to hear about and we'll do our best to keep you informed.

<georss:box>50.40571402636832 -4.0029289692382815 50.41077402636832 -3.993057969238281</georss:box>

The Truth is Out There

Recent news has suggested that the question of 'beasts' on Dartmoor has been definitively answered in the negative. But not everyone agrees.

Posted in May 2008, this piece of video has caught the attention of an American TV production company, Base Productions.

They've put together a six-person team, led by former FBI special agent Ben Hansen who'll be visiting DZP to interview staff for opinions of this and other sightings. They'll also be gathering physical evidence such as big cat prints, faeces and fur, to take into the field to aid their investigations.

The team of investigators will be accompanied by Danny Bamping, founder of the British Big Cats Society.

The BBCS published the results of a survey in 2004 which collected data from The NFU, several police forces and wildlife organisations from across the country. It ranked the South West very highly for big cat sightings and stongly suggested that the government take the phenomenon more seriously.

The general opinion among those that know here at DZP is that there is little question that in the past, big cats of one kind or another have found their way into the wilds of Britain. However, whether they have been able to survive and, more importantly, breed healthy offspring is a much harder question to answer.

However slim the chances of a healthy population of big cats on the moor, it's worth taking these sightings seriously. If there are big cats out there today, then it's a population that's survived against incredible odds and therefore deserving of study and support.

Rare Beetle Sighting

Head Keeper Colin Northcott is getting somewhat of a reputation for spotting rare wildlife around DZP. Hot on the heels of his recent spotting of a red kite, today he found what we're pretty sure is an Oil Beetle.

Otherwise known as a Blister Beetle, thanks to an oil secreted from its joints which can cause a variety of skin irritations, the Oil Beetle is part of a family that share a fascinating life-cycle. The larvae are parasitic upon some types of bees and grasshoppers. When hatched, they climb a flower stem and wait for a bee. Then, hitching a ride on the bee they gain entry to the hive where they feed on bee's eggs, pollen and nectar. The larvae then pupate in the bees nest, leaving to seek a mate once mature.

The species, meloe proscarabaeus is bluish black in colour with a long swollen abdomen. We believe the one pictured here is male since the abdomen in the female is particularly pronounced. We are able to make this comparison because we actually found two in the same area.

As far as we are able to establish, the status of the beetle is 'vulnerable' numbers having declined drastically in recent years. One of the causes is thought to be the decline in bee population.

We'll be keeping a sharp eye out for the Oil Beetle in future. In the interests of their future welfare we suggest you do likewise.

UP-DATE:

Having educated all key staff on the status of the Oil Beetle, we just released this male back into the wild. Astonishingly the female we spotted yesterday was still around. They looked very happy together...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 182px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xta0UUgxHHQ/S83Eturs_8I/AAAAAAAAAOI/UvIzCxYgEo8/s200/P1100886.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462238212974772162" />

Red Kites Over Zoo

Its official. A Red Kite was seen today soaring over the zoo.

This wonderful majestic bird gave zoo staff a visit this morning. Believed to be a female, she was circling overhead at low level. A beautiful sunny day showing off her colours in the sunlight. A first for most zoo staff.

Although Red Kites have been seen in the area before it has been many years since the last sighting. Their decline has meant that sightings are extremely rare now. This Kite is the first for many years and we hope that this may be the start of many more visits for this region.

This magnificent bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish brown body, angled wings and forked tail.

At one time confined to Wales, a long running protection program has successfully re-introduced Red Kites to England and Scotland. The nearest areas of re-introduction to Devon are Central Wales and Central England so for Kites to be seen in Devon must mean that they are successfully spreading throughout the country.

Have you seen Red Kites near you?

Or if you know the best places to see Red Kites?

Comment here.

Big Cats on Dartmoor!

According to Plymouth Herald: Britains environment watchdog has ruled out the existence of big cats in the wilds of the Westcountry, despite countless sighting claims by members of the public.

Natural England said it was "confident that there is no breeding population of big cats" in the UK after releasing a list of the exotic species reported to it by the public.

As an animal keeper for many years, it is innevitable that i have run into this debate before. Whilst working in the midlands i was called upon by local police forces, on several occassions, to help with reports of "big cat" sightings. I would accompany them to the scene of the sighting and check for evidence. I have found spoor, (feaces), scratch marks, foot prints and fur on many of the sites but i cannot confirm that any of the evidence found came from a big cat.

Before the 1970's the law on keeping a big cat, such as Lion or Tiger, was very relaxed. Anyone could keep a Lion in their garden as long as it was caged! My partners family lived just around the corner from such an owner who kept his Lion on the front lawn! The local children would walk past it on their way to school.

Since then the law has changed dramatically. The Dangerous Wild Animal Act, (DWA), was introduced in the early 70's to stop the trend of keeping big cats as pets and forced owners to house their cats, and other dangerous animals, properly. Proper, safe enclosures were needed with adequate room and a licence was needed to own such an animal.

This new law prompted an influx of animals being given away to zoo's, but worst of all, some of those that couldn't afford to comply with the new regulations would release their animals into "the wild". Exmoor was the first place to have a "big cat" sighting. A black Panther, (Leopard). Thought to be an illegally released cat in the 70's. Since then hundreds of sightings came in to various police forces all across the country. Dartmoor being one of them. Over the past 30 years many sightings have been reported across Dartmoor, Bodmin moor and Exmoor. Each area boasting their own "beast of"

While the original cats of the seventies will all be dead now, is it possible that some crossed eachothers paths and produced offspring? We cannot discount this, but, in my personal opinion, i think unlikely. Many sightings are fake, many just mis-identified. Yet the sightings still come. Are they the offspring, escapee's, illegally bred releases? Reports across Britain still come in from time to time but Natural England say there is no breeding population of big cats in the UK. Over 30 species of wild bird have been recorded at the zoo from the tiny Goldcrest to the huge Buzzard and Raven. The Jackdaws are nest building around the main house and the wrens have taken up residence just outside the office window. The wild bird chorus in the morning and evening at this time of year is a cacophany of sound as they compete for the best territories. Look around the trees as you wander through the zoo at the nest boxes placed throughout. The Blue Tits are nesting everywhere. We eagerly await the imminent arrival of the Swallows that will soon be ducking and weaving in our large open, soon to be African paddock, opposite the restaurant. The male birds are in full colour now trying to catch the eye of the females, and our resident Peacocks are in full tail too, fanning their spectacular plumage to everything that'll take a look. Woodpeckers are drumming in the new season and the Tree Creepers are busy scurrying up and down the giant oak trees.

The flora is in full cycle with the changing colours throughout spring. The snowdrops are just finishing their flourish and are making way for the crocuses and daffodils. Soon it will be the turn of the bluebells and the rhododendron. We also have many rarer plants like the Australian fern, lime trees, eucolyptus and evergreen oak.

As you walk up the main drive you will see our large pond used by our Capybara. Take a closer look at the waters edge and you will see that the frogs have spawned leaving huge clumps of jellied eggs. The pond will be alive with tadpoles before long. At the top of the drive, behind the eucalyptus tree, another small pond is home to several newts and dragonfly will soon adorn the reeds later in the spring.

Whatever time of year you come, keep a sharp eye out. As well as our exhibit animals there is a world of natural beauty around you. So you can be sure of a natural spectacle. Look beyond the enclosures.

There's more to Dartmoor zoo than just a zoo, if you just take another look around.

Wildlife Art Competition and Exhibition

<img style="float: right; We wanted to give him some large new logs to scratch and clamber on. One of these in particular was very heavy indeed and so a good size for this big cat. We also wanted to secure a hanging log that Sov would be able to tussle and spar with. We hoped that the movement of such a large, strong object would provide much stimulation and activity.

As you can see from the photos, we secured a rope between the two trees (easier said than done!) and then used a small length of chain to attach the log to that. The log had long eye bolts screwed into it to allow the chain to be connected.

Sovereign's response wasn't as quite as dramatic as we'd imagined but, as you can see from the short video, he eventually got the idea of it! We hope he will use it much more in the future and have already had a few thoughts on how we can make it more appealing, such as wrapping it in horse fur. We had altered his enclosure a fair bit, so it's understandable because Sov did have lots of other things to investigate and, of course, scent mark!

We monitor and record their response to the items we provide so that we know what is successful with each species or individual, and what we need to change or withdraw altogether. A few weeks ago one of our keepers had the idea of hanging up a pelt for some of our small carnivores. They would normally have skin and fur present on their meat, but on its own, and hanging from a branch it encouraged a great deal of activity both from our female red fox Bramble and our female Siberian lynx Kiruna. Kiruna can be seen with this enrichment in the short video clip below.

On Wednesday morning the treacherous driving conditions meant that many staff were unable to even get to the zoo. Hundreds of schools and offices in Devon have been shut for the last few days, but when animals are involved, life must go on as normal. They of course still need to be fed, watered, cleaned out and cared for, the same as every other day. Most of the keeping staff have made it in every day so far to do just this. Zoo keeping is hard work at the best of times, but this week that has been an understatement!

Water bowls have been freezing so hard that in some cases, keepers have been able to stand on them. As soon as we have broken the ice in every water bowl, they start to freeze up again. Although some of our animals, like the tigers and lynx are well adapted to these wintry conditions, many are not. For these species we have been providing extra large straw beds and heat lamps. Some, like the tapir, are being kept in overnight as well.

The biggest and least desired job every morning at the moment is breaking the ice on the Tiger Rock and Jaguar moats. In case you don't know, the moats are used instead of fencing on one side of each enclosure. Every day the ice gets thicker so we need to break it up first thing before we let the cats out. Normally the cats are out 24/7, but obviously this is not the best idea in these circumstances!

The keepers' favourite weapon is a long metal pole with a large bar on the end.

Today is the first time since Tuesday that the van has been able to get to the main road (via the fallow field)! The drive is too slippery for any cars, which is one of the reasons why we are presently closed. As you can see from the video, it did need some help from the dumper on the way back, but we were running quite low on fruit and vegetables for our animals and so it was important to make the journey. The weather forecast for the weekend is more snow so we felt we had to take the opportunity to get some supplies in. Please telephone the zoo before you visit, to make sure we are open.

Putting the Art into Dartmoor

For those of you with an eye for art Dartmoor Zoo may be just the place.
We've given Santa a new spin this year at Derrys Department Store in Plymouth.

Instead of the usual plastic elves and snowmen the management at Derrys wanted something unique for Santa's Grotto this year and we were happy to oblige. The result is “Santa's Living Forest.”

We've basically moved half of our education department – animals, staff and all – to the grotto on the second floor where visitors can see the likes of snakes, giant spiny stick insects, chipmunks, gerbils and bearded dragons (as well as the big bloke with the white beard of course).

We've been open for a few weeks now and it's been an overwhelming success with both kids and adults alike loving the novelty of it all.

You can even pick up that unique Christmas gift for the animal lover in your life. Gift certificates for our “Keeper for a day” programmes, family memberships and tours are available from our staff at the grotto at great prices for Christmas. There's no time limit on the certificates so if you're quick you can beat the price rise next year.

So, if you're in town braving the Christmas crush then why not pop in to see us? Admission is free and you don't even need to bring the kids (Santa won't mind).

Boxing Day Bash!

Boxing Day is always a hightlight of the DZP calender. After careful consideration, we agreed.

We were aware that Mr. Busch is a controversial character, and the huge popularity of his Lion Man series has meant that the debate around him has been fuelled by the oxygen of intense publicity, which is rarely useful in establishing the actual facts.

Our own careful research revealed that no serious allegations made against him had yet been substantiated, and on the principle of innocent until proven guilty, we stood by our original decision.

However, we have since been advised by BIAZA, which is effectively our governing body, not to play a part Mr Busch’s tour, and so we have withdrawn our support.
