Most couples work through it by weighing venue availability, weather risk, the vibe they’re going for.

Here are a few photography considerations that don’t always make that list when deciding on an indoor vs outdoor wedding ceremony. Not to complicate the decision, but to make sure you have the full picture before you make it.

#1 Lighting Changes Everything

Lighting is the biggest variable I work with as a photographer, and your ceremony location has a lot to do with it.

Outdoor ceremonies can be stunning, but the light changes depending on the time of day, cloud cover, and which direction the space faces. A shaded garden ceremony feels completely different from a sun-drenched waterfront ceremony at high noon.

Indoor lighting is more controlled, but there are definitely some considerations there, too. Churches in particular can be tricky: dim interiors, competing light sources, stained glass throwing unexpected color across the aisle.

Both are workable. It just looks different every time, and no two spaces are alike.

#2 Can the Photographer Move Freely?

One thing that doesn’t always come up in the indoor vs. outdoor conversation is how much a photographer can actually move during the ceremony.

Outdoor ceremonies tend to give photographers more freedom. I can shift positions, work different angles, and stay out of sightlines while still capturing what’s happening.

Indoor ceremonies, especially in churches, often come with restrictions. Where I can stand, whether flash is permitted, and how much I can move during the service. I’ve photographed in spaces where I was essentially rooted to one spot for the entire ceremony.

That’s not a dealbreaker. I come into every space prepared, and knowing the venue and its policies ahead of time means I can make sure nothing gets missed.

Pro tip: This is one of the reasons a second shooter can be really valuable, especially for indoor ceremonies with restrictions. When I’m working within limitations on one side of the room, a second photographer can cover angles I can’t get to. Between the two of us, nothing falls through the cracks.

A Few More Things Worth Considering

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. A lot of couples don’t realize that some venues offer both: a covered or indoor space for the ceremony with outdoor access for portraits and reception. That kind of flexibility can take a lot of pressure off the decision.

Weather means more than rain. Sun and storms are the obvious concerns, but bugs are a real consideration for outdoor ceremonies in Northern Michigan, especially in early summer. Worth thinking through before you commit to that open-air garden ceremony in June.

Humidity is worth factoring in. It affects more than just comfort. If you’ve got a hairstyle that doesn’t love moisture, an outdoor summer ceremony might work against you before you even make it to the aisle.

Wind off the water is beautiful until it isn’t. Lakefront ceremonies are stunning. They’re also consistently windy. Veils, hair, and décor all have opinions about that.

Think about your guest count and the vibe you want. A large guest count in a small outdoor space can feel crowded and chaotic. A small, intimate group in a sprawling venue can feel lost. The setting should match the scale and energy of the celebration you’re planning.

Which Is Better?

The lighting, the restrictions, the logistics. These things are genuinely worth knowing going in. They shape how I prepare and what I bring. But they’re in service of something bigger.

At the end of the day, your wedding photographer is there to capture the story of the people in front of them. A well-prepared photographer can work with any space. The moments are what make the photos worth keeping.

Morning in Northport

The day started in Northport at a home overlooking the water. While Cody was with her bridesmaids, Gaurav spent his morning with his brother and nieces. There was a very relaxed, unscripted energy to the house. It wasn’t about a timeline or hitting specific marks; it was just family being together.

Before they left for the church, both Cody and Gaurav took some time alone to read letters they had written to one another. I always appreciate when a couple carves out these small windows of privacy. It gives the day a chance to breathe before the ceremony begins.

The Ceremony at St. Wenceslaus

We drove over to St. Wenceslaus for the ceremony. It’s one of those historic churches that feels tucked away from everything else. The service was quiet and focused, which felt right for them. Once the ceremony ended and they walked back down the aisle as husband and wife, you could see the shift in energy. The nerves were gone, and everyone was ready to get to the water for the reception.

Reception at Omena Yacht Club

The Omena Yacht Club wedding reception is always a favorite of mine because of the proximity to the bay. We spent some time out on the dock for portraits, taking advantage of the late afternoon light that makes this part of Michigan so unique.

Cody and Gaurav didn’t treat their portraits like a photo shoot. They were just hanging out on the dock, enjoying the fact that they were finally married while the party started up behind them. The rest of the night was spent inside the club, which has a very honest, classic feel to it. Between the toasts and the dancing, it was clear that these families are incredibly close.

An Omena Yacht Club Wedding doesn’t need much to make it stand out. When you have a group of people this happy for one another and a setting like Omena, the story tells itself.

None of these descriptions are wrong, but they don’t give you the full picture of what’s possible with documentary wedding photography. That’s why I’d rather show than tell.

Here are seven photos that’ll make you want to say ‘yes’ to documentary photos for your wedding day.

Photo #1: “Getting Ready” That Feel Like You

“How do I make sure my photos don’t look like everyone else’s?” This is a concern I understand completely.

That’s why I love documentary wedding photography. It creates space for you to be you. Even within the parameters of your must-have photos.

Take this getting-ready photo for example. Does nearly everyone have these photos? Absolutely. 

But the magic of documentary wedding photography is that it lets your personality, your connection, and in this case, your mother-daughter relationship shine through. For this photo, I gently prompted them, lined up the framing, and waited for the moment to naturally happen.

And that’s how you get photos that feel uniquely yours.

Photo #2: The Art of Seeing More

So many layers in this image. Marriage license in the groom’s hand. A beer and a wave from a groomsman. Bridesmaid on the phone. A plus one still getting ready. This is what I call being in the third row.

When you’re not orchestrating the moment, you’re free to catch it. That’s one of the beauties of documentary wedding photography.

Photo #3: Vows & Unrehearsed Reactions

Maybe it’s the dad in me. But I think a lot about the way we’ll be remembered.

And when I look at a photo like this, I think about how much it’ll mean to future generations to know your real smile. Not the forced version, but the scrunched-up-face, I-can’t-believe-he-said-that version.

Photo #4: Post-Ceremony High

That just married feeling? Yep, you’ll wish you could bottle it up.

And since you can’t, preserving it through a photo like this is your best bet.

A celebration within a celebration with the wedding party’s littlest members.

These are moments you wouldn’t normally find on a shot list. But being a documentary wedding photographer means staying ready and anticipating those in-between moments. The result is always worth it.

Photo #6: Do Documentary Portraits Exist?

There’s a misconception that documentary wedding photography means stepping back, crossing your fingers, and hoping for the best. There’s a little more nuance to it.

Case in point: these couple portraits. They didn’t just happen. I pulled the couple away from their guests, found the light, and got them there. The rest happened naturally.

For my clients and me, a balanced approach to documentary photography helps us get the shots we want in the most natural way.

Photo #7: A Full-Circle Moment

While the room toasted to the future, he was looking back at the foundation.

There is no perspective quite like the one from the head of the family tree. He isn’t just attending a wedding; he’s witnessing the beautiful result of everything he helped build.

When you plan a wedding, you invite everyone you know to one location. Suddenly, the different eras of your life are standing in the same room. It shifts the atmosphere of a normal weekend. A Hotel Walloon wedding creates a distinct environment for this kind of gathering. The day does not start with a rigid countdown. It starts with people showing up, dropping off bags, and finding each other in the hallways. This is a recurring theme in our Michigan wedding photography.

Clare got ready with her closest friends in a suite upstairs. The energy was light. Bri Artistry and Giulia Grace Beauty managed the morning preparations while everyone caught up. Down the hall, Nolan and his friends gathered. They swapped stories and let the morning unfold at its own pace.

Meeting on the docks

Before the guests took their seats, Clare and Nolan planned to see each other. They met out on the wooden docks away from the main hotel. The anticipation of a wedding day builds up slowly. A first look often acts as a release valve. The moment they saw each other, the quiet tension broke.

It was a highly emotional few minutes. They stood over the water, talked, and took in the reality of the day. Having this private time away from the crowd changes your perspective before the rest of the event takes over.

The lakeside ceremony

By the time the afternoon arrived, guests had found their way to the lawn. Grateful Gatherings directed the flow of the afternoon. Sweetwater Floral built natural arrangements that blended into the shoreline.

Nolan stood at the front. His sister stepped in to officiate the ceremony. Having a family member lead the proceedings changes the atmosphere entirely. She knew their history. She delivered her words with familiarity and a bit of humor. Clare walked down the aisle, and the two of them stood by the water to exchange their vows.

Once the ceremony ended, the transition to the reception was simple. People stood up, mingled on the grass, and immediately started catching up. There is a distinct shift in body language the minute the recessional happens. The formality drops, and the celebration actually starts. Capturing these brief, honest interactions is the core of our documentary style wedding photos.

A tented reception at Village Green Park

Everyone made the short walk over to Village Green Park for the evening. Timeless Event Rentals and Rental Express constructed the tented space on the grass. The tables were set, and the catering team from Crow’s Nest began their service.

Instead of a traditional cake, Clare and Nolan chose something familiar. Guests lined up to get ice cream from Moomers. It kept the evening relaxed. People ate dessert while walking around the tent and talking to different tables.

When the sun finally dipped down, 2 Bays DJs brought everyone onto the dance floor. Clare and Nolan spent the rest of the night right in the middle of it. They shared stories and laughed with their friends. They moved from group to group, fully engaged with the people who traveled to be there. Giving yourself the freedom to actually enjoy the party is the best experience you can prioritize.

The night carried on under the tent. Sunset Premier Shuttle waited nearby to safely transport guests when they were ready. A wedding is a fast-paced gathering of your family and friends. Clare and Nolan recognized that. They stayed present, enjoyed the music, and let the evening run its natural course.

The morning of an Inn at Bay Harbor wedding usually starts with the sound of the lake. For Anna and Ryan, the day began at her family’s home on Walloon Lake. Natural light filled the main rooms of the house as everyone started getting ready.

A wedding morning has its own distinct rhythm. The pace is generally slow before the schedule picks up. Ryan spent his morning getting ready at the hotel. He and his groomsmen eventually traveled over to the family cottage to meet up with everyone else.

Anna finished getting dressed surrounded by her family. Relatives and friends often fall into familiar patterns of helping each other on a wedding day. They button up dresses and adjust collars. These are the small actions that make up the reality of the morning.

Anna went outside to see her father shortly after getting ready. He waited near the house. When he turned around to see her, her mother and bridesmaids were watching the entire interaction from the upstairs windows.

It was a shared family moment. We always prioritize a documentary approach for these kinds of interactions. The point is not to direct the conversation or ask people to move. The goal is to let the morning happen exactly as it naturally unfolds.

First look at Walloon Lake

Ryan arrived with his groomsmen, and he and Anna had their first look outside the house. They had both mentioned feeling some nerves before this point in the day. That tension almost always breaks the second a couple finally sees each other.

They laughed immediately. It is a relief to finally be in the same space. They could just be two people again before heading off to their Inn at Bay Harbor wedding. They spent a little bit of time at the family home before leaving for the ceremony.

Anna carried an arrangement of colorful flowers. The peach and coral tones brought a lot of warmth to the day. Ryan wore a classic custom suit. They had some time to relax with their wedding party before making the drive over to the venue.

The venue sits right on the edge of the lake. A wide green lawn stretches out toward a breakwall. The water acts as an uninterrupted background for the ceremony. Guests began to fill the chairs on the grass as the afternoon started.

The wind picked up slightly. You could hear the water hitting the rocks along the shoreline. Ryan stood at the front. He watched Anna walk down the aisle as the guests turned to look.

Standing by the water

During the ceremony, Anna and Ryan shared personal vows. The minutes right before the pronouncement always carry a specific weight. They were surrounded by their wedding party and their closest friends.

This is the core of Michigan wedding photography. It is about the people standing in front of you and the environment that surrounds them. The formalities ended, and they walked back down the aisle together

The tension of the ceremony was completely gone. The official events were over. Now they could just transition into the evening and talk with the people who had traveled to be there.

Guests stood on the lawn with drinks. The sun began to lower, changing the light across the grass. People gathered near the railing to talk in small groups.

This is often when the day actually begins to feel like a party. People loosen their ties. They catch up with friends they have not seen in years. We focus on these interactions just as much as the portraits.

A documentary experience means paying attention to the guests. It means noticing the conversations and the natural reactions. Inside the tent, the tables were lined with white linens.

Small candles burned in the center of the tables. The floral centerpieces matched Anna’s bouquet. The warm colors stood out against the white linens. The room looked like a place designed for long conversations and an exquisite meal.

They waited outside the dining room before their official announcement. Anna and Ryan took a few quiet minutes to sit at their sweetheart table. It gave them a chance to just be near each other before the reception fully began.

Sunset on Lake Michigan

Later in the evening, Anna and Ryan walked out by the water. They love spending time near the lake. The sun was setting, turning the sky orange and pale yellow. They stood together as the light changed.

These small moments away from the crowd often become the most memorable parts of the day. They walked back toward the reception as the daylight faded. The day was moving quickly.

Working alongside a skilled Michigan videographer during these transitions always highlights how much movement is actually happening at a reception. The tent grew dark except for the lights hanging from the ceiling.

Anna and Ryan cut their cake and shared their first dance surrounded by those who came to celebrate with them. People moved onto the floor as the song ended. The conversations carried on at the tables around the edges of the room. The celebration continued into the night.

Weddings move fast. Anna and Ryan spent their time talking with their guests and standing near the water. They stayed present. They paid attention to the people around them and let the day happen exactly as it was meant to.

After 18 years as a Michigan wedding photographer, I’ve met with hundreds of couples sitting exactly where you are. Here’s what I’d recommend asking (yourself first, then any photographer you’re considering), so you can feel confident in your decision before hiring a wedding photographer.

What to Ask Yourself Before You Book a Discovery Call

Most people think about what to ask a wedding photographer. Not many think about what to ask themselves first or what to consider before hiring a wedding photographer.

Try this before you get on a call with anyone. Pull up a full gallery (you may need to ask for this). Take your time scrolling through it. Let yourself picture being in that day. 

Availability and pricing — those are easy to sort out outside of a discovery call. What’s harder to figure out is whether the work genuinely resonates with you. Here’s what to ask yourself before before hiring a wedding photographer:

1. Do I feel something when I look at this photographer’s work, or is it just pretty?
2. Can I picture my own memories in images like these?
3. Do these images feel honest, or do they feel overly performed?
4. Would I feel safe being fully myself in front of this photographer?
5. Will this photographer care about our people, not just us?
6. When I look at this work, do I feel pulled into the day rather than just shown what it looked like?
7. Does this photographer seem like someone who’d help us stay present?
8. Does this photographer seem drawn to what’s real, even when it’s imperfect?
9. Do I trust this person to notice the moments I might miss on my wedding day?
10. Am I choosing this photographer because the work is impressive, or because it feels true to what we value?

These questions will help you connect with how you want to feel, not only on the day of your wedding, but years from now when you’re looking back on these photos.

Making the Most of Your Discovery Call With a Wedding Photographer

A good discovery call won’t feel like an interview. Instead, it’ll feel like an organic conversation. One where you get a feel for who the photographer is and whether they’re the right fit for your wedding day.

The best way to prepare for a discovery call isn’t to have a list of questions to fire off. My advice is to have thought through what matters most to you, so you know what to listen for.

A great photographer who wants you to feel confident in your vendor decision will cover questions like:

1. How would you describe your photography style?

This one tells you a lot about how a photographer sees their job.

Are they talking about light and composition? Or are they talking about the people? A wedding photographer whose first instinct is to describe the emotional experience, rather than the aesthetic, is usually one whose work reflects that.

There’s no “perfect” answer here. What you’re listening for is whether their description lines up with your vision for your wedding photos.

2. How involved are you on the wedding day? Do you direct, or do you hang back?

Some photographers are very hands-on. Staging every shot, giving clear direction throughout, steering the day toward a specific look. Others prefer blending into the background, staying out of the way and waiting for moments to take shape on their own.

Some wedding photographers, like myself, land somewhere in between. A little direction when it helps, but never at the expense of honesty and letting people be 100% themselves.

Start to think about your ideal experience, how much direction you’d prefer, and what you want to come through in your photos. An engagement session is also a really great way to see the photographer’s working style in action. 

3. What if something goes wrong on the day of?

Rain. A timeline that runs behind. Difficult lighting.

Experienced photographers know that even the best planned weddings won’t be perfect down to the second. What you want to hear is that they adapt, stay calm, and don’t let the unexpected derail the day.

Because something always goes a little sideways, and how they handle it matters.

4. I don’t want the day to feel so rushed, but I want to make sure we get the photos we want. How do you approach that balance?

This is a question that gets at how a photographer thinks about your experience, not just the photos you’ll end up with.

5. How do you approach working with couples who aren’t totally comfortable in front of the camera?

Being in front of a camera all day is something most people don’t do very often. It’s worth knowing how your photographer handles that, and what they do to make it feel natural. After all, your level of comfort is definitely something that comes through in photos.

What you’re really looking for (after budget and availability, of course) is alignment. A wedding photographer whose work moves you. Whose galleries give you a glimpse into the memories you’d like to make and keep for yourself.

The morning of an Old Mission Peninsula wedding

A morning like this does not need structure. Shannon sat on the couch while her veil was adjusted, someone leaning in close, both of them laughing slightly when it caught for a second. No one rushed to fix it. No one tried to reset anything.

This is how an Old Mission Peninsula wedding usually begins when it is allowed to stay simple. People move around each other without being directed. Conversations continue without being cut off. There is no sense of being pulled from one place to another.

On the other hand, Super 8 captures sentiment. The grain, the warmth, the slight flicker. It’s what makes the footage feel lived-in rather than manufactured.

Decades from now, it won’t look like it was shot yesterday. It’ll look like a memory.

• You understand that Super 8 doesn’t record audio

Making a decision can be as simple as following your taste. If the aesthetic resonates with you, then it’s probably the right fit.

Worried your wedding film won’t age well? For what it’s worth, Super 8 has been around for over half a century. It’s outlasted more trends than I can count, and that timelessness says something. 

I also like to remind couples that a hybrid wedding film (combining digital and Super 8) is always an option. As long as your budget allows, there’s no reason you should have to choose between one or the other.

One Last Thing to Consider

By now, you can probably tell how much I love Super 8 wedding videography. But I want to be super clear: Super 8 doesn’t automatically produce a beautiful wedding film. It’s a reflection of the celebration itself. And just like any other tool, it’s only as good as the person using it.

That’s why I highly recommend working with a videographer who’s not only familiar with the equipment but also has an eye for which moments are worth the physical film. Super 8 is a complement to genuine storytelling, not a replacement for it.
