Installing Virtualbox 3.x with USB support in Ubuntu 10.04 (Part 2)

After installing the latest version of virtualbox in the part 1, you have to set up the guest machine to enable USB support.

Step 1. Open Virtualbox. It's on Application > System Tools > Sun Virtualbox.

Step 2. Click the Guest OS you use. Then click "Setting" button.

Step 3. Navigate to "USB" option. Ensure to checklist the "Enable USB Controller" and "Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller" options.

Step 4. In the Guest OS window, identify the USB icon on the bottom-right status bar. Right-click it, pick which USB drive/device you want to connect by just clicking it.

VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization software package, originally created by German software company innotek GmbH, purchased by Sun Microsystems, and now developed by Oracle Corporation as part of its family of virtualization products. It is installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional guest operating systems, each known as a Guest OS, can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment.

Supported host operating systems include Linux, Mac OS X, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Solaris; there is also a port to FreeBSD (only OSE version). Supported guest operating systems include a small number of versions of NetBSD and various versions of DragonFlyBSD, FreeBSD, Linux, OpenBSD, OS/2 Warp, Windows, Solaris, Haiku, Syllable, ReactOS and SkyOS. The current beta version (3.2) also allows limited virtualization of Mac OS X 10.6.

There are two versions of the VirtualBox software.

The full VirtualBox package comes under a proprietary Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL), which allows using the software free of charge for personal and educational use and evaluation of the product. Licenses for commercial deployment of the full VirtualBox package can be purchased from Oracle, although commercial use by individuals within a company is covered by the free PUEL.

A second version called the VirtualBox Open Source Edition (OSE) is free software released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), from which the following closed-source features are missing:

The built-in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server
USB support (see below) and the combination of running the RDP server with support of remote USB devices

In the "full release" (not in the open-source edition), a USB controller is emulated (both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0) so that any USB devices attached to the host can be seen in the guest. If VirtualBox acts as an RDP server, it can also use USB devices on the remote RDP client as if they were connected to the host.

Here's part 1 of 2 how to install Virtualbox 3.x with USB support in Ubuntu 10.04:

Step 1. Adding virtualbox repository in sources.list. Open terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T.

Step 2. Run this command on the terminal:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Enter password to proceed.

Step 3. Add this line in the repository list:

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian karmic non-free

Save it by clicking "Save" toolbar.

Step 3. Back to terminal. Run this command:
wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Step 4. Run sudo apt-get update in the terminal.

Step 5. Open the Synaptic Package Manager.

Step 6. Navigate the origin repository of virtualbox.org, then install the latest version of virtualbox.

Step 7. Restart the Ubuntu machine.

Step 8. Go to System > Administration > User and Groups. Click "Manage Groups" button. Find the "lp" and "vboxusers". Open its properties by clicking "Properties" button. Then ensure your username is check-listed.

It's a really piece of cake to do this. It's using grease monkey script that used in Firefox. Now, we're going to use it in Chrome or Chromium browser, that at least version 4.0 or higher.

1. Go to the Youtube userscript.org page http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/25105. Then click the "Install Button".

2.You will notice that there is confirmation to install extension. Clik "Continue" to install.

3. Dialog box will appear as other confirmation is asked to install the extension script. Click "Install" to continue.

notification will appear shortly.

Now, go to Youtube video page. Let it loaded properly until you see the "Download" button appear between the "Embed" and "Flag" button. Click it, and choose which video resolution you want. Remember, the bigger resolution is, the better video quality would be.

You might have an embedded bluetooth device on your Ubuntu laptop or a plugged-in bluetooth adapter in your Ubuntu PC. But you don't know how to sending and receiving files via bluetooth to and from your mobile device. Here's the solution for this mess.

Step 1: Go to synaptic. update your source.list by clicking "reload".

Step 2: Install the "blueman" package.

Step 3: Press Alt+F2. Run "blueman-applet" command.

Step 4: There will be two bluetooth icon on your desktop on the panel. click the little one, near the date panel item. Then, click "Preferences".

Step 4: In Bluetooth Preferences dialog box, tick the "Make Computer Visible" option. You can change bluetooth name under friendly name field.

There you go. You can send and receive files from and to your mobile device.

Chromium Browser in Lucid Repository Now!

For those who don't know what Chromium Browser is, here's some hints.

Chromium is the open source web browser project from which Google Chrome draws its source code. It implements the same feature set as Google Chrome, but has a slightly different logo.

One of the major aims of the project is for Chrome to be a tabbed window manager, or shell for the web, as opposed to it being a traditional browser application. The idea is for the application to be minimalist in the same way Windows Explorer or Mac OS X's Finder are minimalist. The developers state that it "should feel lightweight (cognitively and physically) and fast".

This week, there is one good news for ubuntu user all around the world. Chromium Browser has entered into the Ubuntu repository list, precisely at the universe repository.

Previously, Firefox 3.6 has become the top choice by Ubuntu users. However It seems will soon be replaced by Chromium, where a series of tests recently Chromium's JavaScript performance is four times better than Firefox's.

Istilah-Istilah dalam Torrent

Berikut beberapa istilah yang sering digunakan:

Seeder adalah orang/user yang mempunyai file yang komplit (sudah terdownload seluruhnya) dalam komputernya.

Uploader adalah orang yang mengupload file .torrent ke web. Dia inilah yang menjadi Seeder yang pertama kali.

Leecher adalah orang yang sedang mendownload tapi tidak mempunyai file yang komplit (belum terdownload seluruhnya), juga dikenali sebagai Peer. Leecher akan mendownload file dari seeder dan leecher, dan juga akan mengupload "pecahan" atau pieces file yang dia miliki kepada Peer/Leecher lain yg tidak mempunyai "pecahan" file tersebut.

Tracker adalah engine script yang menyimpan "track” atau jejak dimana saja Seeder/Leecher berada (berdasarkan alamat IP) dan bagian file apa yang Seeder/Leecher miliki.

Ratio adalah perbandingan jumlah ukuran file yang diupload dengan jumlah ukuran file yang didownload. Atau disebut juga stats.

Torrent Client adalah program/software atau aplikasi yang digunakan untuk mendownload Torrent. (seperti bit-torrent, µTorrent, Azureus/Vuze, BitTornado, Transmission, dll)

Definisi

Torrent itu adalah sistem download yang berbasiskan peer to peer. Dalam arti mudahnya sistem ini tidak punya server dedicated. Semua orang yang mendownload, akan otomatis menjadi "server" juga. Tentu saja speednya akan berbeda dari download biasa. Anggap mudahnya begini: orang-orang yang mendownload saling bagi-bagi atau saling copy satu file yang sama.

Ada banyak keuntungan mendownload file dengan menggunakan torrent. Dengan torrent kita bisa mendownload banyak file sekaligus, bahkan tanpa takut bila koneksi internet kita putus, atau komputer kita hang, sebab file torrent didownload secara terpisah melalui pecahan-pecahan kecil (pieces) sehingga bisa untuk disambung kembali. File yang belum selesai di download bisa didownload di waktu lain. Kita bisa meninggalkan aplikasi torrent mendownload secara otomatis sehingga anda tidak perlu menunggu sampai file tersebut 100% selesai.

Proses download torrent sendiri ada 2 tahap. yang pertama adalah mengambil file .torrent dari situs-situs penyedia file torrent (misalnya isohunt.com) terlebih dahulu. File .torrent ini adalah semacam file sementara yang berisi data link tracker dari file yang akan didownload. kemudian file .torrent tersebut untuk dibuka di aplikasi Torrent Client. dan proses download pun dimulai.

Perlu diperhatikan bahwa semakin banyak peer dan seeder yang terhubung dengan komputer kita, semakin cepat proses downloadnya. Hal ini dikarenakan kita mendownload file tersebut dari banyak sumber, berbeda dengan cara download tradisional dimana kita mendownload file dari satu situs sehingga semakin banyak orang mendownload pada situs tersebut, semakin lambat prosesnya.

Step by Step Download Torrent di Linux Ubuntu dengan Transmission

1. Arahkan browser ke http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/. Lalu cari file yang berekstensi-kan .torrent. Lalu diklik, kemudian muncul kotak konfirmasi download. Pastikan pilihannya ke "Open with Transmission". Lalu klik "OK".

2. Aplikasi Transmission akan terbuka dan terdapat kotak dialog konfirmasi download untuk torrent tersebut. Lalu Klik "Add". Dan proses download pun dimulai.

3.Lalu kita akan meng-customize proses download. Klik toolbar "Torrent Properties". pertama-tama akan terlihat data statistik torent yang kita download.

untuk melihat statistik peers klik tab "Peers".

Untuk membatasi proses download dan upload, klik tab "Options". Ambil contoh, proses download dibatasi 10 kbps saja, dan proses upload dibatasi 1 kbps. Pembatasan ini penting agar tidak memberatkan bandwidth secara keseluruhan.

Jika kita ingin tetap berbagi walaupun file sudah selesai ada baiknya pula mengeset ratio pembagian file atau seeding pada pilihan Seed-Until Ratio. Misalnya kita mendownload torrent sebesar 200 MB. Lalu kita set ratio-nya "2". maka ketika jumlah yang kita upload mencapai 400 MB, torrent akan otomatis dimatikan atau diputus.

4. Jika kita bermaksud untuk mematikan komputer dalam waktu lama atau pun ingin tidak lagi "berbagi" file, kita bisa mem-pause terlebih dahulu torrent tersebut dengan mng-klik tombol "Pause torrent", lalu kemudian dilanjutkan di lain waktu dengan meng-klik tombol "Start torrent".

5. Setelah file selesai terdownload, jika kita ingin ke tempat file tersebut di simpan, klik kanan saja pada torrent tersebut, lalu klik "Open Folder".

Running Test Ubuntu Lucid Lynx

Di bulan April ini, tepatnya pada tanggal 29 April 2010 akan dirilis ubuntu 10.04, release terbaru dan termutakhir. Namun sebelumnya, Ubuntu 10.04 telah di-release dengan label development release alpha, beta1, dan Beta2. Pada tanggal 22 April nanti akan mencapai Release Candidate.

Namun di warnet kami ini, Ubuntu 10.04 telah kami test pada satu komputer operator, dua komputer client, dan satu komputer Server DNS+squid proxy. Alhamdulillah so far so good.

Beberapa improvement yang kami peroleh :
Waktu booting yang sedikit lebih cepat. Waktu bervariasi antara 15 - 20 detik, tergantung jenis hardisk yang anda gunakan. Untuk proses booting yang lebih cepat gunakan hardisk SATA atau SSD.

Resolusi layar yang lebih baik. Baik untuk sistem graphis INTEL, NVIDIA, atau ATI. Namun, Sementara waktu untuk VIA dan SIS sepertinya mesti melalui beberapa tahap setting manual untuk mendapatkan settingan maksimal. Tapi untungnya semua client warnet kami menggunakan platform sistem INTEL.

Performance yang lebih baik. Dari pantauan, kami dapatkan adanya peningkatan performa sekitar 5-15% jika dibanding dengan rilis 9.10 sebelumnya. Performa terbaik dapat anda dapatkan dengan menggunakan harware yang middle-end (processor core 2 duo dan memory min. 1 GB).

Penampilan yang baru dan lebih fresh. Dengan mengusung Gnome 2.30, serta themes light, memperlihatkan penampilan menarik sebuah distro linux.

Setelah beberapa lama tidak mem-posting, kami kembali untuk mengabarkan bahwa blog ini masih aktif.

Saat ini kami masih menggunakan Linux Ubuntu, yaitu Linux Ubuntu 9.10. Selain itu kami juga sedang menge-test Ubuntu 10.04 beta yang kami install di 2 komputer client dan di komputer operator. Mmmmh, so far so good. Kami tidak sabar lagi untuk menunggu rilis Ubuntu 10.04 nanti pada tanggal 29 April 2010.

Ubuntu Trick : Web Images Copy & Paste Not As a Hyperlink in OpenOffice Writer

My experience to copy and paste images from the web to a document format was always kind a headache for me. When you highlight some sections in a web page that including number of images, then paste them in Open Office Writer, there will be a lot image hyper-links waiting to be uploaded to the Open Office Writer.

They're just hyper-links, not the real image that embedded into the documents. For you who open it with an online-connected computer, it won't be too much problem. But there is clear difference when you open it with an offline-connected computer. The document just give you hyper-links, not the real images.
Things will get more complicated when you copy & paste so many hyper-links, that end up with the Open Office Writer Crashes over and over again.

The Trick
Here's the trick to make it solved.

1. Always do the separate copy between text and image. for example, copy & paste the text-only first (do not include the image).

2. Copy the image-only by right-clicking and select "Copy image" option menu.

Then paste it with Right-click menu "Paste" that will embedded the image to the document as image.

Horaaay...finally We found a way to record our ubuntu dekstop session by using Recordmydesktop. At the first time we played it with Totem Player, it just looks good. But when we uploaded it to youtube, we felt that there was something wrong with the video format. it was just not good enough, too blurry. What do you think?

Installing Wbar in Ubuntu 8.10

Wbar is a quick launch bar. It's developed with speed in mind and is highly tweak-able. It’s more than an application launcher, because It doesn’t let you “dock” programs, but it can launch useful number of applications.

So Why using Wbar anyway? because :

The best part of this little “dock” is that it doesn’t need a composite manager to run, such as compiz, etc. So it’s perfect to add some eye-candy if you are running low-end hardware.

So, Let's begin by installing it.

1. Download .deb file here

2. Run the .deb file to install wbar. Click "Install Package" to get started.

3. Before running the wbar application, there might be some consideration :

Wbar looks perfectly in non-composite manager condition. you can see the difference as follows :

So, it's recomended that any composition manager is disabled.

Wbar would not run optimally if it's placed above or under the panel, because some part of it is hidden behind the panel.

Making your own keyboard app-launcher in Ubuntu

One day I got this message in gmail ubuntu-id mailing list that someone requested a how-to add a keyboard app-launcher in Ubuntu. i tried to give him a closer solution, by pressing Alt+F2 and typing application name; or by adding deskbar to main panel, pressing Alt+F3, and then typing three fore-letter of the application you want to run.
is there simply just one shortcut for all these?

Yes, there is...

1. Go to terminal, run :

gconf-editor

2. In Configuration Editor window, Go to apps/metacity/keybinding_command.
click command_1, and click it once at the it's "value" column, type the application you want.
for example openoffice writer, which the command is ooffice -writer.
then press Enter.

you can also use other command_(1 to 12) that still has no value.

3. Go to apps/metacity/global_keybinding.
Find run_command_1, dan click it once at it's "value" column.
Add your own shortcut, which is not have used before. for example Ctrl+Shift+F5. Type it like this <Ctrl><Shift>F5

Close the Configuration Editor window.

4. Now try pressing Ctrl+Shift+F5.

Crazy Penguin Catapult

Hey you, Linux Lover, have you played Crazy Penguin Catapult yet? Yes, it played The Tuxes as a platoon of soldiers trying to fight against a bunch of dirty bears and rescuing their friends. There are more 30 level that you have to pass to conquer this game.

At the beginning of each level yo have to send the tux soldiers with a catapult to the enemy's base, and destroy the dirty bears by sending them as a bomb.

Crazy Penguin Catapult is a flash based game that very funny and quite entertaining too. It took me about an hour to get drown playing this game and forgetting anything.

Updating Application from Local Mirror Repository (Part 2 of Updating Ubuntu from Local Mirror)

After doing additional of local mirror repository, we can check any updates that available.
For Example, I was trying to update Mozilla Firefox 3.0.3 to 3.0.4 version. Here are the step by step instructions :

1. Go to System/Adminstration/Update Manager.

or simply by clicking red arrow with exclamation mark ( ! ). You can see how many updates available if you placed the pointer on the arrow.

2. The Update manager window will be opened and showing all updates available.

Since we only update the firefox 3.0, right click on update list, and pick "Uncheck All".

3. Pick Firefox 3.0 related packages to update the Mozilla Firefox application. Then click "Install Updates" button. You will prompted for admin password to go through.

4. Just wait the update process to be completed. Then, close Update Manager window.

5. Restart firefox to see the update change.

Add Local Mirror to Repository (Part 1 of Updating Ubuntu from Local Mirror)

Getting update for ubuntu is quite really easy, as long as you are connected to the Internet. It would be so much easier if you able to utilise the benefit of local mirror repository nearby, because of it's fast and convenient speed of data download. So, here's the step by step of getting Ubuntu update from the local repository:

1. Go to System/Administration/Software Sources. You will be prompted with admin password to login.

2. In Software Sources window, make sure to activate source code option. Then change the server to the nearest one to your location.

In my case, I choose http://ubuntu.indika.net.id. Click "Choose Server" to go through.

3. Now, it's time to add another local repository mirror. Prepare the mirror list, and add it by highlighting each line, right click it, and choose "copy" option.

4. Go to Third Party Software Tab. Click "Add" button.

Then paste the line that has been copied before. do it exactly the same for another line.

After all mirror addresses are completely added, click the "Close" button.

You will see a window afterward, click "Reload" button

Soon you will see the mirror scanning in progress. You can see the download speed reaching approximately 90 Kbps because of the local mirror location factor. When it's finished, it mean that you have successfully adding local mirror to repository.

The second part of this how-to is a how-to get an update of an ubuntu application from local mirror repository.

Windows's "Safely remove USB" in Linux ubuntu

If you had windows on your machine, you will have to unmount your USB flash disk when you want to plug it off. Just click removable drive icon on the system tray, then click the "Safely remove USB...bla bla". When the icon disappear, then you can plug off the USB flash disk safely.

On different machine of Ubuntu Linux, you will see an icon indicating the presence of your USB flash disk usually on the upper left corner of your desktop. It mean that your USB flash disk is already mounted automaticly. You can browse all of it's content by double-clicking it.

But when you want to "safely remove" it, you must close all running application windows first. Then find and right click the USB icon on the desktop, so you can unmounted it by picking "Unmounted Volume" option. Pretty tricky, huh?

Well, After installing ubuntu, you will not get that kind of easy way of removing removable drive in the Windows desktop, because it's Ubuntu default setting. But you can make it by installing the "Disk Mounter" on the panel. So, here is the trick :

1. Right click the panel, and click "add to Panel" Option.

2. Pick "Disk Mounter" item. then click "Add".

3. Plug in the flash disk. You will see an icon on system tray at the left side of your panel.

4.When you want to plug it off, just click the icon,and pick "Unmount" option. Now, you can "safely remove" your USB flash disk.

5. The Icon will always be appear even when you have plugged the USB flash disk off. You can check it simply by placing the pointer to it or click the icon.

It's useful when you want to mount it again.

ISO Image Mounter AcetoneISO2

Yesterday I just tried to download and install AcetoneISO2. You can download it here at sourceforge.net. I've already Installed it at my intrepid machine, with its dependency installed automaticly. After I installed it, I tried to mount Ubuntu alternate 8.10 ISO image file. wow...It works!!!
